Make a Difference pay was started by USA Today and is recognized allover the United States. It takes place annually on the last Saturday in October. There were seventeen different school clubs and organizations that participated in this year's Make a Difference Day; a grand total of about 115-120 people volunteered. The activities included things like cleaning tables and chairs at the Kenosha Literary Council, as well as raking leaves and closing down a park. . Casey Jones, volunteer program coordinator at UW-Parkside, organized activities for Make a Difference Day. The month leading up to the event. he spends weekdays on the bridge trying to recruit people. This year. about 178 people signed up. and on Oct. 28. they had about a 60 percent turnout. The people. WP<> pamcipaled - did make an impact. The groups of students who volunteered at the DeKoven Woods cleaned up the area, and they were also responsible for removing invasive plants such as wild mustard. At the Racine Zoo, volunteers raked leaves, cleaned the zoo grounds, and even repainted the walkway railings. If you were unable to make it to Make a Difference Day and - volunteering is something that you would like to do in order to "pad your resume." there is a similar event that takes place in April. Stomp out Hunger. is primarily the same thing, but volunteers work for November 7 • 2006 pledges. Other volunteer opportunities arise all the time. Upcoming volunteering events include lingle Bell RunIWalk for Arthritis, Thanksgiving Holiday House, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and wrapping Christmas presents at Regency Mall in Racine. The Day of the Dead ceremony dates back to the early indigenouS people who occupied what is presenLly Mexico. The .
