Further, UW-- _ Parkside Policy #54 to Promote Respect for Campus Diversity requires that" Administrators, faculty, staff and students have the responsibility to ensure that the climate of the campus is one of tolerance and respect for diversity; to monitor and maintain such a climate~ and to take appropriate action when intimidation or impermissible discrimination ... occurs." The administration will not hesitate to act swiftly and decisively should violations of these policies take place. • It has come to our attention that since the beginning of this fall semester, there have been several incidents of intimidation and intolerance toward members of our campus community. These actions are homophobic. are violations of university pqlicy, and contrary to the spirit of respect for diversity and inclusion. In the near future, we will be holding opportunities for reactions to these acts of vandalism as well as the gay marriage ban amendment in the upcoming election. I The Rainbow Alliance, a student organization to provide education and support to gay/lesbianlbisexualJ transgendered students, bas. reportedly had 15-30 Student Union approved flyers and large posters announcing its meetings taken down, tom and defaced. Other student organizations have had difficulty keeping flyers posted, but it appears that Rainbow Alliance has , "Come get that good copy!" Formally Speaking: Anglo-Saxon Women in Protest With faculty kudos given to her as professors got up to leave WyUie 247. Dr. Dana Oswald concluded her noon-hour speech on Monday, Oct. 23. However, what may have appeared to be a regular faculty meeting was in fact an opportunity for students to become more enlightened regarding women in Anglo-Saxon literature. This meeting was only the second of the Women's and Gender Studies Lectures Series brought to the campus by the Center for Women's Studies, headed by Dr. Mary Lenard. Professor Gail Gonzalez began the series on Sept. 25 with her lecture entitled "Latin American Feminism: Social, Political, and Cultural Changes in the Last Forty Years." Following a thin student turnout from the first lecture, there was reportedly only one student at Oswald's lecture called "When Women Mathelode: Women's Speech in Anglo-Saxon England." Despite the lack of student participation, numerous faculty members made the trek up to the second floor of the library for free snacks and a slice of medieval knowledge . "I had two goals in giving this lecture. The first one was to generally introduce Anglo-Saxon culture, literature, language. and all the stuff that people don't know about," said Oswald. "The second part of my goal was to talk specifically about a philological approach to looking at one single word in the Anglo-Saxon corpus of literature and how it is used by women." That word is mathelian, which means to speak formally, and is the infinitive form of the past tense mathelode from her lecture's title. "It's usually a term that's used for men," said Oswald. "It occurs a hundred times in the entire corpus of English literature and writing at all, and only ten of those times is it done by women." One of Oswald's favorite pieces of evidence that women did have the opportunity to s~k formally was an apparent chann. Supposedly, by drinking something cooked with a radish root. a man could relieve himself from the pain of a woman's chatter, her mathelian, hinting that it caused physical pain for men to hear women speak in this way. . Oswald now plans to tum this particular study of women in Anglo-Saxon literature into an. ankle for publication. She hopes to sen~ it out by tht: ~nd of the school year, yet. it probably Willnot be published for a few years.
