Wolfenbtittel. in Wolfenbuuel, Germany, signed an agreement that complements the sister city relationship the two cities have . had for more than 30 years. Closing a long-standing gap in tbe otherwise healthy relationship between the two cities, UW-Parkside Cbancellor John Keating signed the agreement with a representative of Fachhochschule BraunschweigIWolfenbtittel, professor Achim Rogmann, in the Galbraith Room on Wyllie Hall's third floor. . Keating said the agreement shows UW-Parkside's commitment to "enriching our campus" and gives students a BYL.CONWAY B eginning in March of 2007, the uw- Parkside Student Union as you know it will be transformed into a multifaceted center dedicated to student leisure and activities. The planning for this extensive renovation was initiated in February of 2004 when the I Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee , and Parkside Student Government Association approved a $21 million budget in student fees to fund the renovation and expansion of the existing Student Union. The original Student Union was built in 1976 at a cost of $3.5 million in student fees and hasn't undergone any significant modifications since then. "It's had what I would call cosmetic kinds of renovations where they replaced the carpeting and redid the conference rooms and redid a bathroom and redid Union Square - mostly cosmetic," said director of Student Life, DeAnn Possehl. Revamping the building will provide UW- Parkside students with much-needed space for student activities and organizations, as well as updated facilities and services. "It's going very well," said Possehl, "The latest is, in the last two weeks it has been approved by the board of regents and the building commission. So, now the architects can begin the preparation of the construction documents in preparation for it being let out for bid. It's following the tirneline, so we're very pleased with that." The project is scheduled for completion in April of 2009, followed by a reopening celebration in September. The building project will ultimately create a new face for the UW- Parkside campus. The new Union is intended to serve as the main front entrance for the school. In all, the renovation will cost an estimated $24.57 million. However, this estimation is subject to change due to fluctuations in the costs of construction materials and stainless steel. .$23 million will be gathered in student fees and combined with $1.5 million in general program revenue dollars. . The student fees to support the project will be added to the cost of tuition over a spread 30 years. In the 2004-2005 school year, the collection of student fees began at $94.52 per student. Most of these students will never see, much less utilize the Union which they helped pay for unless they . come back as alumni. "Unfortunately that's just the reality of the way it works in the UW System," said Possehl. UNION page 12 Shuttle to Meet Racine Bus at Georgetown I BY JOE LUKASZEWICZ Catering to students from Racine, the UW-Parkside shuttle bus will make three trips to McDonald's near Georgetown In Racine during the next school year. These three trips will begin at 7:45 am; the shuttle bus will arrive at McDonald's at 8:00 a.m, and return to UW-Parkside at 8:15 a.m, The second trip will be '111:00 a.m.; the shuttle bus win arrive at McDonald's at 11 :15 a.m. and return to UW-Parkside '111:30 a.rn. Finally, at 5:00 p.m. the shuttle bus will arrive at McDonald's at 5: IS p.m. and return to UW-Parl<side at 5:30 p.m, . All that will be required to ride the shuttle bus is a UW-Parkside !D, to prove the passenger is a student. UW-Parkside Police chief, Michael Manion wants to "make sure that the Racine students who are relying on ROule 9 still have some form of transportation." He made the final decision to run the shuttle bus. in segregated fee money, so we will actually be saving around $13,000. That will be used to maintain the shuttle bus and pay for gasoline." Right now, UW-Parkside is not suie how much money it will actually cost to keep the shuttle bus running to Georgetown everyday. Marzion said, "We are always open to new ideas, but right now this is the most feasible solution, and after we try il;, we will decide whether we will keep going or whether we will have to change it." Manion also said there will be challenges with the shuttle bus running to Georgetown, such as students having to walk from the Talent Hall parking lot to Molinaro Hall for the three times shuttle bus makes its trip. Marzion said, "It's a balance" because this new system will definitely have both its negative and positive aspects to it. The next school year will be a trial run for the new shuttle bus route, starting the first day of the fall semester. much-needed global experience. Rogmann echoed Keating's comments . "Universities negotiate an agreement between campuse to give their students oppcnunitie, to travel and see the world," Rogmann said. "I'm very happy that the purpose of Ihi, agreement is not just to sign a piece of paper. but to bring life to that paper:' Kenosha and Wolfenbtittel municipal governments passed resolutions acknowledging one another as sister cities in 1974. But the citizens from the two cities started visiting four years before, when Wolfenbtittel sent a letter to Kenosha's People to People Program asking if there were host families for more than 70 Germans who wanted to visit Kenosha. WHITE Neighboring UW system schools have reported an exposure of mumps on campus. UW-Oshkosh has had four cases, and UW-Milwaukee now has 22 reports of either confinned or suspected cases of the virus infection. "Mumps is a viral illness II that is characterized by fever. head or muscle aches, tiredness. and swelling and tenderness of the salivary (parotid) glands just in the front or below the ear," said the Student Health & Counseling Center in an informational letter dated April 19. 2 An alternative idea involved sending the Kenosha Bus to Racine but that would cost the same amount of money to implement as the shuttle bus. Other ideas were also too costly to be implemented. Racine was charging around 25 percent of the real cost for Route 9, so any alternative to that route would cost more. At the end of the spring semester, the- Route 9 bus route will no longer offer transportation for UW-Parkside students from Racine. The price for maintaing the bus route is currently around $53,000. Previously, to pay for the bus route, SUFAC paid for most of the cost ($40,000), and the UW-Parkside police Department paid the rest ($13,000). SUFAC decided to no longer pay for Route 9, and the UW-Parkside police Department does not have the money to pay for it alone. The following semester, I became assistant editor, and soon after that, at the end of my freshman year, I took the position of editor-in-chief. I've grown so much in the past three and a half years, gaining a world of practical education and experience. Although I won't graduate for another year, my work with our studeot newspaper will forever highlight my memories of UW·Parkside. There are so many people I've met who have affected my life in one way or annther. They have enriched my personality and introduced me to an infinite number of ideas and possibilities, and they are the people who make up this community I love. By working on The Ranger News, I have also learned to fully appreciate education, which is something I never thought much of prior to attending college. The paper was down on readership and credibility my first year and a half here. I wanted to fiod ways to improve it, and for the most part, I'm confident I did. I guess I've written more than 30 "Letters from the Editor," and this one is my last. Most ofthe ones io the past have focused on the internal operations of the newspaper, with overtones encouraging community involvement. In fact, I can't help but to use a brief portion of this "Letter" to encourage all students to look for a fitting studeot organization to be a part of next year. There are so many worthwhile opportunities here that it would be a shame to graduate without trying a few of them. Finally, it is time for me to move on from The Ranger News, and it is time for The Ranger News to move on from me. I'm optimistic that the newspaper will contioue growiog under its new ieadership, and I will be forever grateful for being part of such a valuable experience.
