This year, 110 volunteers helped out in the Hunger Cleanup, whichwas organized for the fourth consecutive year by Casey , Jonesfrom the Career Center. UW-Parkside Hunger Cleanup had received several donations 'I from corporations like Paiellis Bakery, Jockey Internatiooal, Educator's Credit Union, Tinsel Town Cinema, S.c. Johnson Incnrporated, Sam's Club, Hob Nob, Chancery, 1IIue Sombrero, AppleHoller, Panera Bread, and Top Notch Graphics. UW-Parkside-related organizations donated items for Hunger Cleanup. These organizations included University Relations, theCareer Center, Student Activities Office, VoJunteer Program, Student Union, Alumni Relations, Parkside Student Government Association, Gamma Alpha Omega, Follett Bookstore, and Aramark. The Hunger Cleanup Committee put together 12 workstations HUNGER CLEANUP PAGE 3 I Board of Regents, Keating Oppose Legislation BYJOHN KELLOGG The board of regents has passeda resolution against the proposed Taxpayer Protection Amendment. If the amendment becomes part of the Wisconsin Slateconstitution, it would make it harder for state and local governments to increase ~venue. Spending would be tied to the previous year's level adjusted for inflation, change in Wisconsin's total personal income, andnew construction growth. Spending could increase only if a referendum were passed in favor ofmore spending .. The amendment needs to be passed by bo!h houses of the legislature in the current tenn and in the next two-year term andthen approved in a statewide referendum in order to take effect. The board of regents said . theamendment would harm the UW System, its students, and Wisconsin's economy. UW'=' Parkside Chancellor John Keating agrees with the board. ''The university is already having a tough time with its bUdget," said Keating. "Clearly the board of regents does not believe thisis the best option for any sort of tax control, nor do L" The board of regents' reSOlution stated that the amendment would force the UW System to increase tuition and impose student enrollment caps: the state would not be as able to acquire federal funds for university research: and the UW System would not increase the number of state citizens with four-year degrees, thereby harming the economy. Keating said the state should try to grow the state's economy and thereby increase tax revenue to a level that would support the university, "and the best way to improve the economy of the state is to invest in education:' According to Keating, the percentage of persons witb a baccalaureate degree in the area around UW-Parkside is woefully behind the rest of the state and the nation. "So in general, we have a sort of undereducated population, and that translates .to a poor prognosis for the future of the economy," he said. Keating's biggest problem with the amendment is that "to allow people in a referendu.m, as opposed to a representall ve democracy, to make these k!nd of judgments is sort of puntmg for the difficult problems of the legislature." Keating does not believe the state should 'be run by referendum." Relational aggression often takes the forms of rumor spreading, gossip, lies, telling secrets, eye rolling, exclusion, and the silent treatment in attempts to promote cruelty through the social networks. A women's studies class on campus has recently taken up the project of researching relational aggression. The class, taught by Roseann Mason, is working to raise awareness of this growing problem by handing OUl surveys and providing infonnauon to students at UW-Parkside. Laura Mason, UW- Parkside's graphic design and project development coordinator. said, "Before starting any redesign of the homepage and subpages, we looked at several major universities and discussed the good and the bad points of each of their respective Web site ..' There have been many misconceptions about the sudden change with the. Weh site. As Mason put it, " ... some people believe that moneywas wasted on the new look and design when the old design was just fine. The fact is. theredesign didn't cost anything. It just meant changing the priority of projects that we have-on our plates." Another misconception is that the WST is in complete control of the entire university's Web site. According to Mason, "Unless we are asked for help, the departments are in cbarge of their own sites", and we can't access Or change them:' The homepage used to present a news story but is now more recruitment-focused. The primary goal for the launching of the-new Web site was to be up and running before student orientations so that potential incoming students at UW- Parkside could see the brand-new site. The chancellor and provost cabinets felt that the homepage should be geared more toward future students, in hopes to improve the enrollment at UW- Parkside. The WST is more than willing to take any opinions or feedback that students may have about the Web site. Mason said, "We want a whole lot more of the student voice on the web." McGee said that the Web site "is a work-in-progress that doesn't work without the feedback and input of its audience.
