There needs to be a new perspective on campus which has not been around in the time I've been here. Too many students are unaware of issues that affect them. Someone needs to help inform them and ask their opinion. This is how you act in someone's best interests. Who is your vice presidential running mate, and .why did you choose him or her? I chose not to run with anyone. Most of the people I know don't want to be in PSGA anymore as they got tired of trying to get things done only to run into a brick wall. What are UW-Parkside students most concerned about? The financial aspect of their education. Tuition goes higher yet it's not for bener instructors it's for a union expansion. 40+ students are very concerned about the bus cuts to Rt. 9. We have to find ways to tnm the budget without hurting the students. Why are you running for PSGA president? I am running for president because I feel that there are a number of problems within PSGA that need to be addressed, and that the current, and potential leadership in place are incapable of affecting the changes needed to best serve the student body of UW-Parkside. With my professional and mili tary background, and willingness to make myself accountable to the students and administration, I am ideally suited to do what those in office are unable to do: serve and be accountable to students. Who is your vice presidential running mate, and why did you choose him or her? My vice presidential running mate is Greg Dwyer. I chose him because outside of my personal and religious convictions, we both have a desire to do what is best for the students, and not merely advance an individual and self-gratifying agenda. Why are you running for PSG A President? I am running for PSGA president to makethe campus community a better place, and restore a sense of pride back into the university. Who is your vice presidential running mate, and why did you choose him or her? Tony and I are running together because we have a very strong working relationship. As a team Tony and I will be an advocate for students rights. Tony is a very dedicated senator, serving more than two years in that position. Tony has shown me extraordinary leadership as well as his peers as ne has been a resident advisor as well. Tony will work tirelessly on behalf of the students. What are UW-Parkside students most concerned about? Access and affordability. Students at UWP work an average of 26 hours a week. The most in the UW system, which takes away from their ability to concentrate on school or any extracurriculars they may want to get involved in. ELECTION COVERAGE page 3 Campaign for Self-Esteem Brings Confusion, Vandalism, and Discussion to Parkside BYCARL~ANNESURBER Hoping to educate the student body by baring their own, Peer Health Educators have recently launched a massive media campaign encouraging students of UW-Parkside to be "comfortable in your own skin." Inspired by a similar campaign sponsored by Dove, Peer Health Educators and Marcy Hufendick of the Student Health and Counseling Center have adapted the campaign to educate UW-Parkside students of body-image issues. "The program is a take off of the Dove's Real Beauty Campaign," said Hufendick, "which has targeted on the issues of low self-esteem among women and girls in terms of their bodies and being . accepting of their appearance." The students of PHE decided to take the idea behind this campaign and expand the target from only women but men as well. Lee-Anne Moore, who begau this year as a member but will be returning in fall 2006 as PRE captain, said that PHE wanted to reach out to everybody, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender. "When we were actually putting this campaign together," said Moore. "we wanted to cover the board." PRE brought together a diverse group of student volunteers who were brave enough to strip down to their undergarments and pose for pictures that were then put all over Uw-Parkside. With quotes like "be comfortable in your skin" and "this is the real student body," PHE hoped to bring awareness and discussion on body-image. self-esteem, and the student body of UW-Parkside. Elections will be held this Wednesday aad Thursday by Java Coast in Molinaro Hall. All students with UW-Parkside identification are eligible to vote. Currently 14 students are running for senate positions and Tyson Fettes, Barbara Walsh, and Andrew Scheeler are running for president. Fettes is the only candidate whose name will appear on the official PSGA ballot, but Scheeler and Walsh have both said they still plan on running as write-in candidates. Their answers are as follows: UW-Parkside Honors Invasion of the Body Image Snatchers Women Of Today BYL.CONWAY "I'm speechless!" said Stacy Yang after receiving an award of recognition for her hard work helping students as a mentor as well as for additional involvement around campus. In honor of Women's History Month, women from UW-Parkside's faculty. staff, and students were nominated for the "Making Her Mark". The Women's Center presented the awards to recipients at a luncheon March 28. "[These awards] honor women's history because they show how women in today's society on campuses are making a difference," said Amber Smith, Women's Center coordinator. The awards show how. women stand up for themselves and accomplish goals, according to Smith. The women recognized were nominated by students, teachers, advisors, and anyone else who had noticed someone making a difference in the lives of others. Women were nominated for anything from helping Organize events on campus to taking time out of their day to tutor other students, as well as volunteering on campus and in the neighboring communities.
