As attendants were treated to mixed salad and tomato bisque with breadsticks, theSpeak Out chewed on topics that werecentralized around critical issues facing women of all ethnicity today. To digest such diverse questions, the event was organized with a diverse pane] in mind, and OMSA selected six female representatives of UW-Parkside who covered a wide cultural spectrum of Jewish, African-American, Hmong, Latina. Albanian, and European and Nati ve American ethnicities. . "We picked this diverse panel on purpose," said Mirella Perez, "because we wanted to learn what each individual woman had to say of the diversity that they've lived, the diversity that they've been through, and just their experiences." Perez was one of the active members of the Speak Out, as she helped plan the event and participated as one of the six panelists. Another panelist, Stacey Yang, treasurer of Parkside Asian Organization, voiced her opinion on being part of the noon discussion. "When I think of women of color, I see only black and white," said Yang, "and 1 would like to see brown in there. That's why I took it upon myselfto be part of the panel, because I want an Asian perception. I want Asian women to stand up for themsel ves." The facilitator of the Speak Out, Jacqueline Smith-Gonzalez, is a Women's ISsues committee member and PSGA co-director of the diversity committee. With diversity and women's issues a focal part of her life and organizational responsibilities, Smith commented upon the difficulty of obtaining such a diverse panel. "It was a challenge," said Smith, "because we had to try and find not only somebody to represent different ethnicities, but also that these women knew what they were talking about." What they talked about was sincere issues of appearance and lack of appropriate representation of women today. especially in the media of magazines, television, music, and film. KELLOGG "There's no joy in Muctville about the situation for French and German, I'd love t~see them both thriving, but It s been a problem for very many years," said Donald Cress, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The future of the French ~d German programs has been OOking bleak as continually fewer students have opted for French and Gennan Courses ascompared to Spanish. Over the course of the review of the Modem Languages Department, ending the French and Gerrnan IJlajors and possibly replacing ~ languages altogether has _n suggested. Despite the common perception that French and German are not worthwhile. Cress stressed the benefits of learning any foreign language: "Whether you use it or not. you, when you think about how the language works, you learn Euglish better, and when you learn English better, you become a better reader and a clearer writer." "1 didn't understand English grammar until I took Latin in high school." said Cress. "I spoke Latin once ...and I don't expect to do it again. Even if people took a German [course] and they don't plan to use it. they're going to Jearn a lot about English." Cress has been an essential 203 and six students who part of the review of the Modern took German 203 in the Fall Languages Department, and 2005 semester compared to 36 he has already submitted his students who took Spanish 203 recommendations ----------- in that same to CAP.
