The Ranger Growl
Dear Ranger Growl,
What does the UWP symbol mean? UWM's symbol is easy to
interpret, but I can't understand Parkside's. 1 asked several people, an
they don't have a clue.
— Dazed and Confused
Good Question. We made a couple phone calls asking what the
symbol was all about, and we agree - most people don't know. Dave
Buchanan, director of public relations here at UW-Parkside, said the
symbol represented trees and leaves. He also said that supposedly
"UWP" can be seen within the symbol, but he could never see it him
self. Neither could we.
Dear Ranger Growl,
The University's policy for keeping the campus open is clearly
stated at the start of each snow season: in general the campus will be
open unless an announcement to the contrary is made on local radio
and television stations well before classes begin. I have no quarrel
with this policy. But when the decision is made to keep the campus
running, as was the case during the snowy period of January 26 and
27, the University has a responsibility to do what is necessary to keep
the parking lots and walkways safe. At a minimum, this should mean
that the walkways are shoveled, not once and perfunctorily, but often,
if n eed be. This was not the case at the end of January.
Walkways were awash in sloppy, slippery slush, making walking
hazardous. A few people with shovels could have corrected this
problem. But we had to wait for Nature to do the job the University
should have done. If the University expects it to be business as usual
during winter storms, it needs to do a better job of shoveling snow.

Drop fee is lowered by $5
Before the end of the fall semester, the student senate
voted on a resolution that supported lowering the Drop
Fee, Transcript Fee, and the Graduation Fee to 2002 rates.
More than 700 students signed postcards supporting the right
students have to oversee any student fee that affects student
interests. Through Wisconsin Statute 36.09(5) students were
given the right to assist in the development of universities
throughout the UW system. PSGA President Vik Sidhu
announced during the first student Senate meeting of the year
that the dropped three had decreased by five dollars down
from $20 a credit, "...administration knows that we are here
to address concerns and we will bring them up."
SAC No longer holds ID's
During an employee meeting January 19, it was
decided that student workers would no longer hold ID's
for equipment or for the usage of the Ranger Power Center
located in the Sports Activity Center. Concerns included both
the replacement cost of a RangerONE card as well as asking
student to part with an ID that may be link to a line of credit.
Any Students wishing to checkout equipment from the Issue
Room will be only asked to display his or her ID long enough
to record their full name. Available equipment supported by
student fees includes: Tennis Racquet, Protective Eyewear,
Medicine Ball, Jump Rope, Men's and Women's Basketballs,
Volleyball, Soccer Ball, Bat mitten / Shuttle, Ping Pong
Paddle, and Daily Use Master Locks.
Speed bump on the bridge?
A section of the floor of the Union Bridge compressed
into a bump, eliciting contusion, concern, and laughter
among people who saw the buckled bricks on the floor. UWParkside's
engineering specialist, Jim Foertsch, said that the
differential in temperature between the outside cold and the
emperature inside the bridge caused the paver tiles to corn-
Dress about 5/16 of an inch, creating the buckle. The paver
iies are 1/2" deep, having no bearing on the structural sturdiness
of the bridge. When they compressed, they piled on top
of one another, creating the bump. The bump was fixed by
cutting two 1/8" control joints the width of the bridge, which
allowed the paver tiles to settle back into place. Foertsch
said that this is just a surface problem, which will be further
lossed over during spring break. The bridge is "safe for
people to walk on," Foertsch said, "Nothing is going to fall
own. You could drive a Mack truck on top of that bridge."

Student Fees Allocated by Representative Government
By Josh Langer and Todd Drangstveit
Fees effect the life of every UW-Parkside student,
whether you are an athlete, the member of an
extracurricular club, a student who uses the Union, or
just reads this paper. The Ranger News will examine
fees and their uses in this four-part series.
Part 1: The Segregated Fee
The Student Segregated Fee is included in a
student's bill under "Tuition & Fees." Full-time students
pay $286 each semester for this tee, while parttime
students pay proportional rates to the amount of
credits they take. This year, 5,097 full- and part-time
students paid fees in excess of $2.3 million dollars
in the form of the Student Segregated Fee. These
are monies that will fund Union programs, Student
Activities, and the University's Athletics Program,
along with campus organizations such as the UWParkside
Activities Board (PAB) and The Ranger
News. UW-Parkside students indirectly decide how to
allocate these funds through their elected representatives
in the Segregated University Fees Allocation
Committee (SUFAC). SUFAC consists of nine members
who write and apply policies concerning the
Student Segregated Fee. Of these nine, the student
body elects one individual during the Spring elections.
That person is the "at large" member of SUFAC.
Department SUFAC Allocations
• 2003-2004'
•2004-2005
Another member is the President Pro Tempore of the Student Senate, six are PSGA
senators elected by their peers, and the last is an appointee of the PSGA president.
These nine UW-Parkside students decide how the student body's fees will be
spent.
Recently SUFAC has overhauled its funding of organizations, changing the
way monies are allocated to clubs, for twro reasons: efficiency and planning. The
University has plans to expand.
Keep posted to this series for more information on the proposed Union
expansion. Next issue we will explore the intricacies and particularities of the
Student Segregated Fee and SUFAC's difficult job of appropriating these funds to
best meet the needs of the student body.
PAB Throws Down
Casino Nite
UW-Parkside students were encouraged to do
something that is usually frowned upon in an academic
environment on Thursday, January 29. They were
encouraged to gamble.
Every UW-Parkside student was invited to
attend the third annual Casino Nite, held in Union
Square. There was no cost for the event. Admission
was allowed for all students with a valid RangerOne
card.
About 200 people attended the event, which
was sponsored by the Parkside Activities Board (PAB),
with a little help from their friends over at 101.7
FM W1PZ. T he event was hosted by Casino Party
Specialists - "The Aces of Gaming Entertainment."
Each student was given $500 in chips. Dealers
taught students the basics in blackjack, craps, Pai Gow
Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Let it Ride Poker, Three
Card Poker, Red Dog, and Mini Baccarat.
At the end of the night, students
cashed in their chips for raffle tickets,
which cost $200 dollars in chips apiece.
The PAB chose several prizes for the
raffle, including a DVD player, a portable
CD player, a cordless phone, and a CD
rack that lights up.
But the real attraction of Casino
Nite is not money or prizes. In the words
of blackjack dealer David, "Winning here
isn't as fun as winning at a real casino.
But losing here is not so bad."
Games were not the only option
for entertainment. Caricaturist Kevin
Berg scribbled with frenzy for the entirety
of the event, which lasted from 7-10.
There was a palm reader, mysteriously
hidden behind partitions; and food and
lemonade.
PAB president Miranda Flouston,
vice president Randy West, August Marie
Wagner Richardson, and other members
of the Parkside Activities Board organized
this extravaganza. It was a lot of
fun, and no one lost a mortgage.
Eric Bates and Carl Miller of
WTPZ provided tunes. Check out their
shows on Saturday from Noon - 7 p.m.
Bates' show is called Unleashed, and
Miller, a.k.a. DJ C-Styles, plays the
Variety Show.

Who trwy itllo Beat Around the Bush?
On February 17, Wisconsin holds its primaries. Anyone can
vote who is 18 or older, an American citizen, and is not in prison or
on probation for a felony offense. To vote, a person must be registered.
A person can register if she has been living at an address for at
least 10 days. She can either register with the municipal clerk of her
city, or register at her polling place; but be forewarned: this second
option will probably greatly increase time spent at the polling place.
To register to vote, one needs a picture l.D. Do not be intimidated by
the process of voting. It is relatively easy, and one simply need find
out what ward he lives in to vote. If you are not registered on the
day of the primaries, you can still vote, just go to the polling place
of your ward.

"Are condoms still
good after they
have been in a car
freezing in subzero
temperatures
ail winter?"
I asked the experts from Planned
Parenthood ^Federation of America at
www.teenwire.com., and I found condoms
should be stored in a cool, dry
place. Long exposure to air, heat, and
light makes them more breakable. If
condoms can't be stored in those temperatures
I think it would be safe to say
condoms are not good to use if they have
been hidden in your glove box in frozen
temperatures. As I was researching this
question, 1 wondered if you thawed it out
and saved it for a later date (pun totally
intended) if it would be safe to use, but
again I would have to conclude no.
The editors from teenwire said
that carrying condoms with you is a great
idea but if you've had the same condom in
your purse, wallet, or glove compartment
for while, it's a good idea to exchange it
for a new one because it can get to warm
or cold and they tend to tear and rip more
easily and frequently and then they do not
reduce the risk of sexually transmitted
infections or are not effective as a form
of birth control. They did say you could
store them in the refrigerator to prevent
them from being damaged, but definitely
don't use them past the expiration date
regardless of where they are stored.
FIND #2
"The Sunday night Sex Show talks
a lot about anal sex. I have always
thought that anal sex was a bad thing to
do because the anus wasn't made for sex.
It was made for pooping. So is it bad to
have anal sex?" Is it bad to have anal sex?
Hun? This seems like a moral dilemma, but
T think T understood what you meant. The
reason some people aren't so sure if anal
sex is healthy or have a bad connotation
with it is because in the past it was illegal to
have anal sex in some states. Not because it
was wrong, but because it spreads sickness
more quickly than vaginal sex. Your right,
that anus was not meant for sex, its prime
function is to excrete feces...that's what it
was made to do. it is made for excretion.
The skin is tighter and tiny tears can occur
from the penetration, tears you may not even
know are there. Diseases and sickness can
spread more quickly, which is why aids and
other disease is more predominant in the
gay lifestyle. Yes, diseases and sickness can

» Time For Tea?
f By Alexander Wasnicwskj
We are living in a period of time where our
actions are of the utmost importance. I'm sure that
the generations that fought in the Revolutionary War,
the Civil War, WWI, and WWII thought that each
was the war to end all wars. They probably thought
that their actions would determine whether or not
the human race would survive; however, things have
changed. Technology has advanced and, as a whole,
we have lagged far behind. We (or better put, the
powers that be) now hold the capability to end life
with the simple push of a button. We (the American
populace) have willingly entered into WWIII, and as
a whole we aren't even aware of it.
Meanwhile we talk, we debate, and we
attack those who are different from us. Many people
in America believe that racism is dead, that there is
no longer a distinction between classes. We forget
history, we forget the lessons vvc should have learned
from history lest our fate is to repeat it. We neglect
to understand the reasons our standardized education
system is useless; we neglect to truly see even with
all this information in hand. We arc now paralyzed as
a whole, incapable of action, incapable of self-reflection
and examination. We speak of making the world
a better place; however, our only solutions have been
to drop bombs. We have forgotten the real lessons of
WWII, that it was the war to end all wars. Sadly, the
victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki may have died for
no reason largely because they have taught our nation
nothing.
As a whole, we have failed to grasp the
overwhelming patterns that are occurring. The mass
transfer of arms and training from the U.S. (that our
economy is so dependent upon), into areas of the
world such as Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Central
America, Iran, Iraq, Columbia, Uzbekistan, etc... We
fail to sec (or comprehend) what is right in front of our
eyes, that we have largely created our own problems.
Donald Rumsficld's handshake with the vile dictator
of Iraq on December 20, 1983, virtually assured us
that vvc would eventually invade Iraq to recover the
WMD we had transferred to them (businessmen don't
really use the kiss of death, they shake hands).
We search for solutions, and we have greatly
limited our own civil liberties in the process. We have
forgotten, or simply don't care what Mr. Franklin said
about those who would willingly sacrifice their liberties
for security. We march on, forward - progress
can only come about through conflict, or so it is said.
Survival of the fittest, dialectical indeed.
Yet we are not that naive, we realize troubles
arc ahead; therefore, we remain vigilant. We remain
divided. We remain so involved in our daily lives,
our quest to earn our fair share of that elusive pie,
The Ranger News February 14, 2004
that we have neglected our most important obligation
as citizens of the United States. That is, simply put
the preservation of our union, the preservation of the
sanctity and all that is special about America.
This war in Iraq is wrong, rationalize it however
you may. Yet while you are doing so, make sure
not to look that recruiter squarely in the eyes. He is
looking for people willing to become cannon fodder,
remember this because this is America and wc arc
always concerned about equality, women can also
die on the front lines for a war in which vvc arc only
pawns. Just sign on the line, we'll educate you on the
way the real world works, just sign on the line and
hand over ail you are to Uncle Sam, he'll take care of
you, check his track records.
This is a war for much more than oil. This
is a war for no less than the preservation of The
Empire, or as George Herbert Walker Bush put it so
eloquently on September 11, 1991, the New World
Order. All of a sudden America is concerned about
those who would violate international standards
of human rights; however, wc cannot even afford
these same rights to detainees in Camp X-ray (US
citizens included), nor the Native Americans, African
Americans in our prison system, the women of our
own society, the Wobblics, the Sudanese, Libyans,
Japanese, Philippinos. Shall I continue or have I
made my point? The hypocrisy is indeed sickening.
The problem here isn't Saddam Hussein,
Osama Bin Laden, WMD, Qadaffi, Columbian coco
farmers, and it definitely isn't the nation of Islam. We
have seen the enemy, and it is ourselves, or as Cynthia
McKinney feared, we may have already become that
which we so abhor.
We can tell ourselves, O.K...we'11 simply
vote Bush out of office, yet who will lake his place?
Power does not willingly hand itself over, it must be
wrested from its firm grasp. Another politician will
be all too willing to take his place and continue on
with the agenda set forth by the corporate oligarchy
and the ''fortunate few" who truly run this show.
I'm trying to be optimistic here (OK maybe
not), but forces far beyond our proletarian imaginations
arc working against us, the WTO, IMF, the
World Bank, structural adjustment policies, international
corporations, and if you please, the Bildcrbergs,
Skull and Bones, the Trilateral Commission, the
Council on Foreign Relations, this is what the people
of the world and of America are up against Step out
of line, en masse, raise your voices, be "unpatriotic,"
FEMA is waiting to show us that the Third Reich was
simply the beginning. Is there hope? The answer is
no. I am simply a liberal wacko, in a nice simple box.
I'll just close the lid, and go back to life in the good
old US of A. Just let me know when it's lime for tea
again.
What is the Patriot Act? How does it affect you?
lTte Patriot Act is a revised national surveillance law that expands the government's authority to
spy on its own citizens, while reducing checks and balances on those powers like judicial oversight,
public accountability, and the ability to challenge government searches in court. Do you mind that
the government can look through all your personal records without any probable cause? This legislation
is being highly criticized for its ideology of reverting back to the McCarthyism era of spying on
American citizens. The Patriot Act destroys all the accomplishments that wc obtained during the Civil
Rights Era of the 60's and 70's. We, the students, are putting together a gathering where students can
learn more about the legislation and how it may affect their lives. The student forum is taking place
on February 16 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the library's Overlook Lounge (2nd Floor). Come learn
more and voice your opinion.
University Sports
Super Bowl Turns Into
Offensive Showdown
The New England Patriots and
Carolina Panthers were supposed to have a
defensive battle in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
The two lived up to that hype for almost the
entire game, before the fourth quarter when
both teams had offensive explosions.
In the first quarter, both teams failed
to score a point. Carolina barely gained a
yard in the opening period. The Patriots
had the best chance to score on an Adam
Vinatieri 31 -yard field goal that was wide
right. The punters were getting their best
work out of the season.
The Ranger News
During the second quarter both
offenses showed signs of life when the
Patriots put up 14 points and the Panthers
scored 10. Tom Brady threw two touchdowns,
and Jake Delhomme threw one.
John Kasay rounded out the scoring with a
50-yard field goal to end the halt.
The defense of both teams took
over again in the third quarter. Both teams
failed to score in the quarter, and it looked
as if the game was going to have a boring
conclusion with both teams having a difficult
time moving the ball.
Then all of a sudden the game
took a wild and exciting turn in the fourth
quarter. The offensive power of both teams
came through and the defense for both
teams looked helpless. The Patriots scored
17 points in the quarter and the Panthers
scored 19. The most exciting score of the
game for the Panthers came on an 85-yard
pass play when Jake Delhomme complet-

Revenge of the Black
Mamba:
An Allegory
Written By
Bill J. Turner
Edited By
Tess Tobon
Chapter I of VI
A young biology student, attending
the University of Wisconsin-Parkside was
making his way home, traveling north on
a-bike path. Having just crossed the county
line road and nearing a horse farm with a
new corral and good-looking, high, board
fences, he was watching the many small
animals - rabbits and squirrels mostly - that
dart across the bike path.
It was a beautiful September day,
warm in the sunshine and cool in the shade
of the tree-lined bike path. He began to
hum, and then sing to himself that western
folk tune; "Oh the buzzin' of the bees in
the cigarette trees on that Big Rock Candy
Mountain."
As he was trying to remember the
next line, a rabbit darted across the path in
front of him - followed by the largest snake
the student had ever seen outside of a zoo.
He estimated seven to nine feet in length and
approximately four inches in diameter at the
mid section. The coloration was muted and
dark - almost black, but with a dark olive
green tone - more of an avocado shade that
made him think: Mamba. Black Mamba.
His brain, working like a fast computer,
brought up on its screen all of the
large snakes that he and his brother had
studied, cataloged, and in a few instances
had collected when they were boys. The
snakes that they had been most interested
in were constrictors or venomous; such as
the Cobra family and the Mambas. He was
sure that, due to the size and coloration of
this beast, this would be a very dangerous
task. He had already accepted what he must
do. In his mind, considering his training and
environmental background, he was left with
no alternative. His mission, which he had
accepted, was to capture this specimen alive,
if at all possible, to determine its species,
gender, and whether it had been tagged prior
to release, or possibly, escape. His concern
for the community surroundings were of
paramount importance.
He had handled reptiles, especially
snakes, from about sixth grade on, both in
class and out in the field. He had gained
great respect for all snakes. However, these
large poisonous snakes that are able to transmit
a large quantity of venom are especially
dangerous, due to their size and strength. In
Sub-Saharan Africa, they have been known
to attack Land Rovers crossing their territory.
All of these thoughts flashed across
his mind, similar to what he had read about
near death trauma: the reports of lives flashing
before eyes. He did not think that he was
going to die. However, he realized that if he
did not execute his plan close to perfection,
he could die- here, on this bike path.

short story. Stay tuned

Define the Scene: "Emo"
By George "DRU" Drury
The purpose of the "Define the
Scene" column is to shed some light onto
the buzzwords that being tossed around by
MTV, Rolling Stone, and any other media
forum discussing the rising punk rock and
indie music scene. This week's focus is on
the dreaded "e" word, "EMO."
History
"Emo" is the most overused description
in music media today, and due to its
overuse, it's one of the most confusing labels
in the music industry. The word started as
a description of a style of hardcore punk
known as "emocore." The traditional hardcore
style was focused on national politics
and rebelling against the system with its
intensity lying within its anger. The focus
of "emo" was on the personal politics with
its intensity in honesty. "Emo" became the
heart for the hardcore muscle, allowing
fans to get even closer to musicians who,
thanks to the nature of the scene, they were
already close to. The hardcore scene placed
musician and audience on the same level,
the honesty of the "emo" sound allowed the
fans to glimpse into the diaries and hearts
of the bands they loved. The "emo" sound
was brutally honest lyrics that were laid over
melodic guitar lines. The vocalists couldn't
always sing well, but that just served to convey
the intense emotions even more. With
the expansion of the Internet throughout the
late 90's, the "emo" scene expanded as well.
Live journals and chat rooms became home
to "emo kids" trading the names of bands
and helping each other in the same way the
music helps each listener.
The problem with the "emo" label
is that bands don't want it, and journalists
don't understand the meaning of it. Punk
bands don't want it because it traps them
into a style that might now always be relevant
to their own lives. The confusion in the
media stems from the belief that "emo" is
purely short for emotional. Also, there is not
a definitive sound onto which the label can
be placed. So now, the "emo" label is sold
as a fashion style and less as a form of musical
expression. The largest problem with the
name is that the most recognizable "emo"
band is Dashboard Confessionals, and since
they are an acoustic band, the media plays
that aspect up as the designator for an "emo"
band. The confusion now lies in the fact
that avid TRL watchers begin to confuse the
acoustic work of someone like John Mayer
for genuine "emo" material.
Suggested Listening
To get a better grip on what "emo"
really is, it's best to go back to its roots. The
following albums are defining moments in
"emo" history.
Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring
Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good
Weezer - Pinkerton
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Dashboard Confessionals - The Swiss
Army Romance
These are just a few, but they will give you
an idea of the sound and intensely honest
lyrics of "emo" music. For more information

Monster
By Jim Burzelic
Aileen Carol WTuornos (Charlize
Theron) is a down-and-out prostitute who
falls in love with the lonely Selby (Christina
Ricci). With this new reason to continue
struggling, Wuornos tries to fix her life, but
becomes a victim of circumstance, driving
her to murder.
Gritty and visceral, writer/director
Patty Jenkins weaves a compelling narrative
that evokes pity, sympathy, and understanding
while still condemning the murders. She
unravels Aileen and shows us the what and
why of her actions, what makes the monster
and what monsters can make.
Charlize Theron plays the lead role of
Aileen, delivering a staggering performance.
Aileen's story is a tragic one, where she
realizes too late that she has gone too far.
Theron's dedication to the character is so
realistic that one forgets they are watching
a major movie star and is enwrapped by her
portrayal of a sad woman in dire straights.
Christina Ricci is Selby, a young
and naive lesbian who befriends Aileen.
While she is Aileen's savior and reason for
living, she turns a blind eye to the actions
Aileen commits to take care of her. Ricci's
performance is subtle and effective, playing
an influential and vital role in Aileen's life
as motivator, conscience, and instigator all at
once.
Monster is a great movie. Harsh and
beautiful, it's a story of spit and vinegar that
enthralls and compels.

Metamorphosis at Augie Wegner Studio
By Aaron D. Zabler
Stories of life, love, and loss; partial nudity among men and women clothed in ancient Greek attire, all cast in and around a 3,000
gallon pool. It may sound to you like the last fraternity toga party you attended, but in actuality it is a description of an upcoming theatre
production here at UW-Parkside.
The show is entitled Metamorphosis, and was written by Northwestern
University Professor Mary Zimmerman. It is an award winning production that
made its first appearance on Broadway a few years ago. Metamorphosis is a
compilation of Ovid's classic Greek talcs, but with a modem twist. The language
in the play has been transformed to our modern era, which adds a comical tone
to some of the ancient stories. The most exciting part of it is that the entire
performance is set in and around a fully operational pool.
As the director, Professor Dean Yohnk, stated in an interview, "It was the
first swimming pool built on Broadway...and God knows this is the first time a
swimming pool is being built in our theatre!" The pool is being built in the Augie
Wegner Studio Theatre by a very talented crew who has faced many challenges, as
would be expected with a project of this magnitude. The pool measures 12x14x3
feci, has varying depths, a hidden tunnel and will hold roughly 3,000 gallons of
water. It will be equipped with a pool pump and heater to keep the water bearable
for the actors and any unlucky front row audience members.
After inquiring as to why Dr. Yohnk decided to include the performance
in this season's list of productions, he staled that, "It's our effort to do new and
exciting works." Ironically, the play is a collection of ancient works performed
in a "new and exciting" way. He said he likes this play because, "It deals with
humanity at its best and at its worst, and I find that fascinating. I also like the
diversity of it, parts arc very funny and parts of it arc very sad; it includes a wide
range of emotions".
Dr. Yohnk continued to explain that the pool is a very important aspect
because the water plays a large role in the play, "It is a symbol of change and
transformation throughout the play." Yet the presence of water adds a whole new
challenge to acting, because the actors will have to perform most of the play cold
and wet. Another challenge is that the furthest audience member will be seated
only three rows away from the pool's side. Dr. Yohnk said that towels will be
provided for audience members in case any water should become unintentionally
airborne.
All of the actors in this production have been presented with the
challenge of having to play various roles in each of the different stories. Therefore,
Dr. Yohnk has put together a cast that has the ability to be creative and diverse
because the actors arc required to play between four to eight different characters.
The director does add the disclaimer that the audience members should
be aware that there is some partial nudity in the show, a scene of implicated incest,
and lots of wet costumes (wet equals revealing). Why would anyone not want to
see this show? Dr. Yohnk replied perfectly, "How often do you get to see a playin

By Emily Rasbornik
I talked with my oldest sister about the
white lies men and woman feed one another and
she gave me an example of a guy who told his
girlfriend he was going to the mail when he was
really at his house playing video games with his
friends. He told my sister he does this all the
time. I guess I don't know what is so fun about
lying. Why would anyone do this? Does society
influence us to tell only part of the truth? Or is it
that we should only tell the part of the truth that
serves us? 1 know: if it makes us look bad or
causes conflict we should keep it a secret.
1 happen to think dishonesty disconnects
and creates walls in between people, especially
in relationships. The truth may hurt sometimes,
but it never wounds the way lies or half-truths
can. I do admit, sometimes it's easier to tell half
truths, but suppressing all the little untruths and
avoiding confrontations, only divides us
Suppressing truth limits our ability to
love one another. Creating intimacy and closeness
means being truthful. We all make mistakes...!
mean we are human. Being humble
about how you really feel on certain issues takes
time. And there are certain ways of nicely and
tactfully speaking the truth about how you feel.
We should think about how things are said. Was
the above guy his girlfriend would be sad or
mad? Was he trying to avoid drama? Was he
was trying to avoid hurting her feelings? Well, 1
happen to think he hurt them anyway. 1 wonder
if it was worth the white lie. Does it come down
to not wanting to deal with problems? Problems
are a part of life. You can't avoid them. Even if
you try to plan ahead, sooner or later a problem
will arise. Some think they come in three's. 1
think we have problems in life to help us learn
ways of dealing and helps to establish selfgrowth.
•I0E S^KS:
For the most part, I think that being honest
can help relationship problems and create a
deeper bond. If the guy who stayed and played
video games told his girlfriend that he wanted
to play video games with his friends and actually
dealt with the fact that he felt bad or guilty
about playing video games instead of spending
time with her, it could have helped him feel better
about hanging out. He could have simply
asked her if that made her feel bad. And dealt
with the problem. Another problem could have
come up if the girlfriend was not willing to give
him space, and that is a whole separate issue.
But 1 could see her not trusting him and unable
to give him space if he told white lies all the
time, because she wouldn't know when to trust
him...even if the issue is as small as playing
video games with his friends.
Knowing how to deepen your relationships
is being aware of your feelings and knowing
when and how to patiently, humbly, tell the
Hruth of who you are. What an art.
We love feedback!

The Art of Honesty
By Henry Gaskins
Everything I have experienced when it
comes to finding a relationship and dating in the
past six months has lead me to think oppositely
of the old cliche "honesty is the best policy."
Hear me out on this one.
Every time I tell a girl the truth, it turns
her away. For instance, I w as having a flirty textmessage
session with a girl the other night, and
she asked what I wanted to do. I confessed what
my real intentions were, and I haven't heard
from her since.
1 w as close to talking my ex-girlfriend
into coming back with me a couple months ago,
and she asked me a critical question: "Is there
anyone you know you would rather date?" I
thought about it for a minute and told her the
truth - that there was someone else 1 might have
wanted to date, if the opportunity were to arise.
At this point, 1 realized that there was no point in
getting back together with my ex, and I believe
this honesty was the straw that broke the camel's
back on my last "real" relationship.
One more exampl e of my fai 1 ed honesty:
There was a girl I worked with once, in a galaxy
far, far away. 1 wrote her a letter explaining my
growing fondness of her and why 1 thought we
might make a decent couple. (It is kind of corny,
but it worked for Hugh Jackman in that timetravel
Meg Ryan movie.) The girl read my letter
and said, 'tHmm...I've never thought of that
before." It was about three months before she
communicated with me the same way she did
before the letter.
So what is it about raw honesty that
drives women away? 1 think, possibly, women
in general aren't used to guys who speak the
truth in pickup lines. I've learned this can work
for me or against me. "You're sexy and I want
to take you home with me now" may be the
truth, but I've never gotten a girl to go anywhere
with me by using that approach. However, while
speaking the truth candidly, with class, and usually
about something the girl is interested in and
comfortable talking about, I've noticed each of
my possible relationships last at least ten minutes
longer.
I don't really know why girls haven't
liked it when I've explained my honest intentions.
I know most guys would love to know
exactly what a girl wants (and when). And I
always thought one of the most valuable traits
girls look for in guys is honesty.
But then again, 1 tell half of the girls 1
meet that 1 plan on walking around the planet
after I graduate, which is a true intention of
mine, and therefore I don't usually see marriage
as a possible result of any relationship I enter. So
ma}'he my take on failed honesty is a bit skewed.
Either way, I'm not too worried about it, because
at least I know if I'm honest, they will never get
the wrong idea.

Alarm at UW-Parkside Campus Library Sounds Every Three
Minutes or So J
By Tracy Medek
The scene: UW-Parkside library, Level /. Students diligently studying. Circulation and Reference Desk
workers tending to their duties.
There is a quiet hum of computers, a soft smattering of conversation, the flutter of pages being turned.
Beyond this, serenity. Then a student decides to exit the premises, it's as if an ambulance, sirens blaring,
sped through the library. The studen t, surprised and puzzled, reenters. Agai n, the alarm sounds. He empties
the contents of his backpack onto the checkout counter, muttering things like, "I don't have anything, just a
notebook and my cell phone." His story checks out, and off he goes, triggering the alarm once again. Students
make exasperated noises; workers return to their tasks, eyes glazed over with the senselessness of it all.
A teacher enters, clutching books he's about to return. The alarm welcom es him accordingly. The desk
worker shrugs an apology, and checks in the books. As the professor leaves, carrying nothing, th e alarm
bellows its farewell.
A giggling toddler wobbles through the entrance, but the alarm puts and end to her joy. The child's
mother, not far behind, hurries t o scoop up the now hysterical girl and dista nce the two from the cacophony.
What can we conclude from all of this? Well that's easy: Everyone who uses the campus library is a
dirty, rotten thief. The alarm doesn't lie.
Morose - Valentine's Day Special §].:
By: Kafie Katie the horoscope lady
Please note: This week 's horoscopes
will be given in song titles. The
song listed below your sign is a sum
up of your current love situation.
It should be played throughout the
week of February 14th to insure lots
of lovin'for you - unless its a sad
love song, in which case this song
will be your only company when
eating the box of chocolates you
purchased for yourself.
Aquarius
"This Bitter Pill" by Dashboard
Confessional. Actually, every
Dashboard song makes you want
to cry your eyes out - but singer,
Chris Carraba, cries in this one right
along with you. A broken heart is
a terrible thing, but you'll be over
it soon.
Scorpio
"I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
by The Darkness. And you do
too! Ain't love grand? (Note: If
this song's reference to being in
"LOVE", is too strong a word for
you and your other - substitute
"reeeeaily really like". I believe in
a thing called reeeeaily really like-
Sounds just as good.)
Cancer
"Pink Triangle" by Weezer. I'm
sorry to be the one to inform you
of this news, but your gender isn't
quite appealing to the person you
admire. Don't feel bad, you just
didn't know is all.
Libra
"Austin Powers Theme" from the
Austin Powers Soundtrack. You
don't need no lyrics! You're feeling
dandy with your situation, so skip
down the sidewalk and whistle this
theme wherever you go.
Aries
"Area Codes" by Ludacris. Face
it: everybody wants you - and your
popularity is not limited to the
South-Eastern Wisconsin area. Oh
no, friend. People in Florida and
Texas kiss your picture at night.
You're doing something right, so
keep it up.
Taurus
"When I'm Sixty-Four" by The
Beatles. You aren't quite sure if
your love plans on sticking around
forever, like they promised, and
you need some reassurance. Bother
them with questions using this template:
"Will you still love me if
?" and fill in the blank space
with an unappealing characteristic
that comes with old age. Do this
over and over, for this is the only
way you can find out for sure.
Sagittarius
"My Best Friend's Girlfriend" by
The Cars. Did your friend already
called dibs on someone that you
want? Just can't seem to shake the
feeling that you two were meant to
be? I see a love triangle forming. I
advise that you create the biggest
soap opera drama of all time! Or
better yet, challenge them to a duel.
Or if you'd like to keep it peaceful
- opt to share. I'm sure there's
enough love to go around.
Gemini
"Milkshake" by Keiis. You may
be alone, but you've chosen this
status. If you decide you'd like
some company, well hey- you've
got your pick. Because duh, your
milkshake brings all the boys to
the yard.
Capricorn
"Toxic" by Britney Spears. This
either means you are so hot that you
need a warning label, or (according
to the music video), your significant
other plans on going on an
adventure to retrieve a poison he or
she will use to kill you with. If your
significant other decides to cany
out the video scenario, make sure
they plan on following every aspect
of the video: being naked and wearing
only jewels is a must.
Pisces
"Sex Machine" by James Brown.
The title speaks for itself. Carry on.
Virgo
"f Don't Want To Wait" by Paula
Cole. You g et the Dawson's Creek
theme! This could be good or bad
actually. Watch the next episode
of Dawson's Creek: If Joey is with
Pesci, love is coming your way. If
she's with Dawson, you've got a
long wait ahead.
Leo
"Please Don't Go Girl" by New
Kids on the Block. Your beloved
won't stay even if you beg them.
It's the sad truth. Prepare for the
lonely nights by adding your profile
to every dating website you can
fmd. People really do find love on
the internet. Right? I think. Well,
actually nevermind. What am I
talking about? Just listen to the
sons.
