Letter Trom the Lditor... THE
RANGER
NEWS
STAFF
Hey Parkside,
Can you believe it's December already? Has
anyone else noticed that the new months come before
we get used to the months we are in? It seems like just
yesterday was the beginning of the fall semester, and we
all were trying to get comfortably situated in our classes.
A professor just told me there is two weeks and one day
left this semester (inevitably less by the time you read
this). That means it's time to turn in that extra-credit if
you need to, or sit down and study so you can rock out
your finals. If you are one of those people who is
excelling in all your classes, feel free to take the rest of
the semester off Just make sure it's cool with your
instructors — and don't tell them you got the idea from
the newspaper editor.
I'd like to welcome you all to The Ranger News
arts and entertainment issue. The majority of articles are
related to music, movies, theater, etc. I'm happy to let
you know I think we are making progress as far as this
becoming a quality newspaper. We do have a long way to
go, however. We are currently looking for graphics design
majors who are interested in a paid, three-credit internship.
If you know of anyone, tell them to stop by the
newspaper office (Wyllie D139C — across from the Career
Center) to fill out an application. Also, we are always
excepting new reporters and we are looking for some
photographers/Photojournalists.
Now, it's time for you to read this issue so you can
move onto more important projects, such as homework
(God, I feel like such a parent). As always I'd like to
thank the members of our staff who spent time over
Thanksgiving break to help make this issue possible.
Thanks for reading, UW-R Enjoy!
Sincerely,

The Ranter Growl
Dear Ranger Growl,
Having been a student at Parkside for some time now, there are
certain classroom behaviors being exhibited by fellow students (with the
highest concentrations among new freshmen), which at this time need to
be addressed. These are behaviors that were not tolerated in kindergarten
let alone in high school so now that these immature people have chosen
to come to Parkside, what suddenly makes these things acceptable? In
what follows, I have listed some of the most common and most annoying
of these behaviors and provided the rationale for why they perturb not
only myself but also more than likely many of the offenders' other classmates
as well. (Note: this does not take into account the feelings of any
of the Professors/Instructors on campus as with myself. Being a student,
I do not feel it apropos to "speak" for them.)
First of all, the incessant conversations that must take place while
the Professor/Instructor is standing in front of the class giving a lecture.
It may not be possible to hear what "you" are saying but it is still possible
to know that there is a conversation going on. Rationale: Not talking
while someone else is speaking is a matter of common courtesy; not only
is rude, is a distraction as well. Also, it shows the utter lack of respect
that those who feel it necessary to converse during class have not only for
your fellow classmates but also for the person in the front of class lecturing.
Frankly, it does not matter if the professor is the worst professor on
campus, even if you do not respect the person you respect the position.
Furthermore, if the conversation is that important there is the door; please
use it.
Secondly, the packing up of one's things before class is over.
Classes meet for X amount of time; this was made quite clear when the
class was signed up for. However, there are those who are so impatient to
leave that they constantly make a raucous when they pack up 5-15 minutes
before the end of class. Rationale: once again, this is a distraction
from the learning process for others. It is also quite disrespectful. It is
not as though the next class that these "children" have starts immediately
after the previous class ends, and even if it did, that is no excuse. Moreover,
if one hates the class that much and is in that big of a hurry to leave
they should feel free to drop it. A class can easily be dropped within the
first eight weeks of a class. In short, if the class is not to your liking for
whatever reason, DROP IT!
Thirdly, cell phones. Need I say more? Admittedly, there are
those on campus whose cell phones are kept on for essential reasons, but
they are the exception and not the rule. What's more, when those who
have legitimate reasons have a cellular phone going off in class it is with
good cause, (and, no, Jane, Jim, John or Joan calling to gab about whatever
does not constitute good cause.) As well, when those with legitimate
reasons happen to have their phones go off, they quickly leave class to
take the call. They do not just sit there and let it ring nor when they pick
it up do they have a conversation there in the classroom. Rationale:
again, another distraction from others' learning, this offense also falls
under the category of bad manners. These days, there is such a thing as
cell phone etiquette.
Finally, this is college and we are all supposedly "adults" here, so to
those members of the student body, who cannot seem to realize this,
please consider this a wake-up call to GROW UP! Some of the students
here are here to LEARN (what a novel concept!!) and do not appreciate
fellow students detracting them from the learning process. So, please
take another moment and realize the effect your actions have on others
and ask yourself this question: was what I am doing now acceptable in
high school? No? Then might I strongly suggest changing your
behaviors? This is after all a place of HIGHER EDUCATION.. .not
KINDERGARTEN.
Signed,
One Highly Irritated Student

On Campus Tuberculosis
Breakdown
By Sonya Gonzalez
If you were one of the many people who heard there was someone
on campus infected with Tuberculosis, worry no more. That person does
not have it.
Tuberculosis (better known as TB) is a disease that usually attacks a
person's lungs. The disease can spread with a cough or a sneeze. However,
only the infection is spread and not the disease. The infection differs
from the disease because the infected person is only carrying the bacteria
and the person's immune system can fight it. According to experts, only
about 10% of the people who are infected with the bacteria actually develop
the disease. Someone who has the disease would be very sick with
symptoms such as:
-A cough that does not go away
-Feeling tired all of the time
-Weight loss
-Loss of appetite
-Fever
-Coughing up blood
-Night sweats
There are two ways a person can develop the TB disease. The first
way is if a person has been infected for years and then develops an illness
that decreases the defense of their immune system. The immune system
would not be able to handle the strain of both infections, thus causing the
development of the disease. The second develops more quickly; the person
becomes infected and their immune system is not able to fight the bacteria.
That person will develop the disease within weeks of exposure.
Brief exposures to an infected person will rarely cause the transmission
of TB. TB usually requires close contact with the infected person, i.e.
family members, roommates, working together or close friends. If you suspect
you have been infected, you can get a skin test. Results are determined
within three days. TB has become a "common" illness over the
years. Experts say nearly 1 billion people are infected with TB worldwide
in a year.

Business Speaker:
Executive-In-Residence
By Josh Kurz
On Tuesday November 18,h, the Executive-In-Residence program
invited Ed Emma to UW-Parkside to speak on Business and the economy.
He is the CEO and President of Jockey International, Inc. The title of his
presentation was "Embracing Change in the New Global Economy." His
presentation included a slide show and a speech that was divided into three
different sections.
The first section of Emma's presentation was titled "Profile of
Jockey." It was here that he discussed how Jockey is a midsized company
with around 5,000 total employees, and around 350 employees in
Kenosha. He also discussed how there is a subsidiary in Germany. During
this section he also spoke about the history of the company. It started
in 1876 when Samuel Cooper founded a sock company in St Joseph,
Michigan. The company eventually moved to Kenosha in 1893 and began
manufacturing underwear in 1900.
The next section was titled "The Changing Landscape of Business
in a New Global Economy." Here he discussed the global growth slowdown.
He also talked about overcapacity. This happens when there are too
many products and that there is a sluggish amount of employment growth.
It also describes the devaluation of the U.S. dollar and rising social costs
for people. It was also during this section that Ed Emma talked about the
different ways that consumers shop. In today's society fewer people go to
shopping malls and department stores. More consumers shop for things
on the internet, and consumers are also more knowledgeable than ever.
The final part of the presentation was titled "Embracing Change."
This is very important if any business wants to be successful. What
worked in the past doesn't guarantee that the same thing will work in the
future. During this section he talked about some of the problems that
affect many industries. He gave advice for businesses. He said a business
should know who they are. He also said that an organization should know
their consumers. His final piece of advice was that businesses should
think non-linearly, or think outside of the box.
Overall the presentation was a success; many students and
professors attended and gained knowledge in the business world.
Opinion: Media
Reform
By Miijana Maca Petrovich
The National Conference on Media Reform in Madison last month
expected about 200 people, but over 1,700 appeared. People who showed up
included congressmen, authors, radio broadcasters, journalists, songwriters
producers, senators, students, and concerned middle-class working people
Senator Bernie Sanders announced, "People are increasingly disgusted with
corporate descriptions of Iraq and other news...people are turning to the
BBC for news... if we are serious about health care, the environment, anc
war [among other political issues] we must be concerned for media." This is
because unless we can see different points of view on a subject, we will not
have the resources to make a difference.
Boy, is he right. Media reform is a political issue that does not receive
as much attention as the Doppler 5000's new killer graphics. No coincidence:
When four or five corporations own more than 80% of what we consume in
media, do you think they're going to tell us about the political consequences
of their concentration? The loosening of FCC rules in June 2003 has allowec
a small handful of corporations the power to de-emphasize critical issues in
the world. What's worse is that there is a current push to obtain even more
media control. According to Sanders, this is dangerous because it is corporate
control over media that places limits on people to get a clear perspective
of issues. I couldn't put it better myself when Sanders spoke at the conference,
saying, "We must look at media and its effort to make people not
understand that politics is relevant to life.. .what media does is deflect attention
from the most important issues and makes sure that we do not under
stand the importance of democratic society to our lives."
Let's make our voices heard. The news should be by the people for
the people.. .not by corporations with profit-driven intentions. The following
websites will bring you to further information regarding media reform.

Longtime fans of the Brewers might remember the
|ne Warren Spahn. He died at the age of 82 on Monday
vember 24th. The last time that a Milwaukee baseball
m won a World Series in 1957, Spahn was the best
cher on the team. He is often times referred to as the
it left-handed pitcher in the history of baseball
though many people argue Sandy Koufax). Spahn won
3 games, pitched two no-hitters, and was elected to the
11 of Fame in 1973. He was also nominated to the allr
game 14 times. His best years were between 1953
i 1961 in Milwaukee, as he won 20 games every year,
;ept for one. Spahn began his major league career in
42 when the Braves were still in Boston. When the
ives moved to Milwaukee in 1953 Spahn came to Milukee,
and sadly when the team moved to Atlanta after
1964 season, Spahn left town. Later he would play for
• New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants. What
kes Spahn's career so miraculous is that he lost three
irs time because he was involved in World War II
ml943-1945. Warren Spahn is also the answer to a
oular trivia question; he is the only pitcher in the history
baseball to have as many victories pitching as he did
»e hit s as a hitter. Spahn had 363 victories, and 363
eer hits.

Parkside Grad Has Something to Scream About
By: Bud Windale
Hollywood Babylon comes to the Union Cinema
on Wednesday December 10 as Parkside Rainbow Alliance
sponsors showings of the horror documentary Something
To Scream About and the horror short film Julia Wept both
directly involved with the University. The features were
written, produced, and directed by 1996 UW-Parkside
graduate Jason Paul Collum.
Something To Scream About (65 minutes) follows
nine actresses who found fame- and infamy- in the horror
film genre. Among them are Judith O'Dea (Night of the
Living Dead), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Denice
Duff (Subspecies 2-4), Julie Strain (Heavy metal 2000),
Debra DeLiso (The Slumber Party Massacre), Debbie
Rochon (The Toxic Avenger IV), and Ariauna Albright (The
Dead Hate the Living!).
The actresses discuss the ups-and-downs of working within
the B-Movie industry, touching on topics from ageism,
sexism, and nudity, to the rewards of paychecks, cult
celebrity and fan-bases. The documentary hosted by Horror
Icon Brinke Stevens (Body Double) includes rarely
seen photographs and film clips.
Julia Wept (30 minutes) stars Parkside's Senior
Lecturer of English Julie King, UW-Parkside graduates
Tina Ona Paukstelis, Karen Dilloo, William Krekling, and
Michael Tange, plus Hollywood actors Brinke Stevens,
Jason Sechrest and Kedric Hubbert. Collum shot the vide
feature for a mere $80 in 2000 as a "visual resume" to
gain work in the film industry while he was living in West
Hollywood, CA. It gained popularity through word of
mouth and became a modest financial and critical success.
The story follows a young woman named Julia (King)
who, following a massive car wreck with a mother and
son (Stevens, Sechrest), awakens moments later to find
nothing is normal as flowers bleed, inanimate objects
come to life, and the dead call from the shadows.
The evening will be introduced by Collum
(www.iasonDaulcollum.coml. who is also a freelance journalist
and has worked a variety of crew positions on 15 feature
films including The Brotherhood 1 & 2, Hell Asylum,
Final Stab, the Bad Movie Police comedy series, and the
upcoming 20Ih Century Fox release Deadly Stingers.
Doors open at 7 pm. Ticket prices are $2 for UW-Parkside
students with IDs and $4 for the general public.

Top 5 Movies You May Have Never Seen
By John Poppe
1. Kids (1995) -
This film is 24 hours in the lives of a few contemporary
city youths who, like many teenagers, believe they are
invincible. Beautifully filmed by the always controversial
Larry Clark, this is a deeply affecting and no holds barred
look at the nation's youth.
This film depicts with raw honesty, the experiences, attitudes
and uncertainties of innocence lost. Kids stars an
amazing ensemble cast of young unknown actors - who are
actually teenagers for once.
These kids tell stories of drugs, promiscuous sex, and all
other forms of debauchery you can possibly think. But
while these kids dwell in the big city, their story could quite
possibly happen anywhere. This film stays with you long
after you are finished viewing it.
3. Donnie Darko (2001) -
IttODftJMBStP"
This is a dark and gritty psychological thriller about a
teen coming face to face with his uncertain and dark destiny.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Donnie, a delusional high
school student who is visited by a demonic rabbit named
Frank, who shows him eerie visions of the past and deadly
predictions of the future. Frank tells Donnie when the
world is ending, and Donnie realizes that it's in 28 days.
This is a film that explores the myths of time travel with
the most believable storyline I've ever seen and the ending
is totally perfect and unexpected. If you're in the
mood for a weird but funny flick, do not pass this one up
at anymore. Besides, Patrick Swayze plays a pedophile in
this movie. How can you not want to see it now?
4. Cube (1997) -
Six strangers awaken to find themselves trapped in an endless
maze of interlocking cubical chambers armed with
deadly booby traps. With no food or water, they have only
a few days to live. None of them knows how or why they've
been imprisoned but each possesses a skill which may help
them to escape. Unless these six people learn to cooperate
and work together, none of them will get out alive.
This is a great psychological horror film. Watching how
each character adapts to their claustrophobic surroundings
is a very interesting character study in itself. The booby
traps are amazingly ingenious and at times very gory. The
opening sequence of the film really sets up the tone nicely.
If you like psychological thrillers, do not pass this one up.

2. SLC PUNK (1999) -
It's 1985 and Stevo is a
punk rocker in the Mormon
stronghold of Salt Lake
City, Utah. He just graduated
from college and now his
life is a weird rollercoaster
ride of punk shows, stealing
cars, beating up rednecks,
and non-stop partying with
his buddy, Heroin Bob.
With a choice between "No
Future" and Harvard Law
School, what's a punk to
do? This is Stevo's search
for a way to grow up without
selling out. Stevo is
hilariously and perfectly
played by the always goofy
Matthew Li Hard.
Even if you aren't into the
5. Return to Oz (1985)
Did you know they made a
sequel to the 1939 classic
The Wizard of Oz? This
film stars a VERY young
Fairuza Balk who plays
Dorothy. It takes place just
after Dorothy returns from
Oz and her Aunt and Uncle
are rebuilding their farm.
Dorothy is now in shock
treatment because no one
believes her story of Oz and
they feel therapy is the
answer. Dorothy escapes in
a rain storm one night and
falls into a river unconscious.
When she wakes up,
she is back in Oz, though
now it is in ruins. A new set
of friends, including a tin
soldier, a talking chicken,
and a pumpkin man, help
her against new villains,
including Princess Mombicomplete
with a set of
detachable heads-and the
punk scene, this is still a
great movie about rebellion
and anarchy. If you're even
a little bit curious about the
hardcore punk scene and
what it's all about, this is a
must see!
evil Gnome King. This is the
movie Wizard of Oz should
have been. It is so unintentionally
twisted and brilliantly
evil I don't know
how anyone can call it a
kid's movie. This isn't the
Oz you remember from
when you were a kid. If you
ever thought Wizard of Oz
would make a better horror
film than musical, this is an
absolute MUST SEE!

Blink 182 Music, Qt\yie.n;S
Wow. Blink 182 finally grew up. I never got completely sick of their toilet-
humor, but it was refreshing to hear this album. Already, Blink has taken
over MTV, with consistent play of the video for their new single, "Feeling
This." Not to mention the airwaves....
On their eighth release to date, Blink 182 has made a lot of progress
from their trademark pop-punk style. While not completely ditching the
distortion drenched sing along choruses of their past, the guys have managed
to mature into something a little more suiting to them. They're a little
older, a little wiser, and even a little more "mature." Their typical four
power-chord progressions have mutated into some slightly discordant
songs (and vocals). I'm impressed.
Overall, the album is definitely a step in the right direction, especially
considering the last few releases by the band. At first, I was taken aback by
the single "Feeling This." Then I listened again. I absolutely love the vocal
work done on it. Some of it is typical Blink, but they've dropped the studio
effects on a lot of it, which makes for a much more legitimate album.
Add in some electronic drumbeats and sound effects, and you've got yourself
a really interesting album. This is Blink 182 learning its okay to
progress musically, while still keeping true to your roots. In fact, the two
ideas clash secretly throughout the length of the album. The first single, in
fact, talks about sex - but not in the usual humor of Blink's past antics.
Instead, Tom Delonge sings passionately about something more serious
and more emotional. This is about real life, not some made up teenage fantasy
from the band's past.
Oh, did I mention the guest appearance by Robert Smith of The Cure
near the end of the cd? You'd honestly think you had a Cure cd in your
stereo if it weren't for the thirteen other songs....
Straylight Run
Nelly Furtado's Folklore
With no actual release as of yet, you'll have to hit up the band's website
to hear some audio. Make sure you do (right now!) for two reasons -
One being that they are amazing. Two being that they have not one, not
two, but six songs free for download. Ok, onto the review.
Featuring two ex-members of the rock machine Taking Back Sunday,
this band is destined to take the indie scene by storm. But don't expect the
wailing vocals of Adam Lazzara, or the crush of distorted guitars (all typical
of TBS). Much rather, you will be taken away and serenaded to; the
songs are dream-like and very much piano laden. The slower paced, pop
melodies will take you to some place far away. The lyrics are honest and
the vocals are modest and raw. The singing duties are shared quite evenly
throughout the band, which makes for an interesting listen. The familiar
sound of John Nolan's voice (ex-TBS guitar/backing vocals) cuts right
through the mix, driving this music straight into your consciousness. I honestly
found myself humming along to "The Tension and the Terror" after
only a few listens. An interesting fact is that Nolan's sister is also a member
of the band, and you'll hear the sweet sound of her voice gracing the
choruses of several songs, most notably "It's everyone's fault but mine."
I highly recommend these songs for anyone who is a fan of bands like
The Get Up Kids/New Amsterdams, and Taking Back Sunday (bet you saw
that one coming, eh?). But even if you lean toward the more mainstream
pop like Ben Folds or Vanessa Carlton (or any other piano-driven pop rock
act, for that matter), you'll like Straylight Run.
If you missed them when they were up in Milwaukee just two weeks
ago, they will be back in the area and dropping by The House of Blues in
Chicago December 12, on tour with Coheed & Cambria.

A drummer I know agreed
with me this morning that
OutKast should take the
cake for the year's best disc.
He liked Speakerboxxx/The
Love Below so much that
although someone burned
him copies of the discs, he
went out and bought them
anyway. After my chat with
that drummer today, I went
and bought Portuguese-
Canadian Nelly Furtado's
new album, Folklore.
When I went home and put
it in my five-disc changer, I
noticed how the disc's
design looked aesthetically
same as OutKast's Speaker -
boxxx and The Love Below,
which both happened to be
in there, in spots two and
three. I put Folklore in spot
four. The OutKast discs are
covered with metallic pink
orchids {The Love Below)
and metallic red subwoofers
(Speakerboxxx), with OutKast's
logo at the top, and
the name of the disc written
in cursive at the bottom.
Folklore is a metallic purple
disc—the color of royalty—
with Nelly Furtado's distinctive
curlicue logo at the
top, and "Folklore" written
in cursive at the bottom.
Together with OutKast's
discs, Folklore forms the triumvirate
of the years best
pop music, and I think Folklore
is the most cohesive,
skillful, and perhaps brilliant
of the three.
Furtado's debut, 2000's
Whoa, Nelly!, took the
teenage pop queen archetype
and molded it into real
music: brilliantly unique
and melodic—a truly
unprecedented sound. Even
her critics agree on this
point. Furtado's label,
Dreamworks, had an advantage
over the labels of Britney
Spears, Christina Aguilera,
etc. Furtado knows
music's souls and theories.
She is more than a pretty
vocalist. She has training in
jazz band and plays many
instruments at various skill
levels.
Her fresh, slightly whiny
voice is perhaps most easy
to remember from her first
single, "I'm Like a Bird."
The catchy, yet chic and
urban production of Whoa,
Nelly! shines on that track,
as well as "Turn Off the
Light." Unfortunately,
probably due to its philosophy,
"Sh*t on the Radio"
was hardly ever heard on
the radio here in the States.
Whoa, Nelly! developed a
cult following here, but in
Canada, Great Britain, and
Europe, Nelly Furtado's
debut was received with
huge aplomb. I imagine
Folklore will end up much
the same, though I hope that
Americans won't be scared
to buy it. Whereas the divas
we are used to, such as Britney,
Christina, and Madonna
change their image first
and foremost, with their
music apparently progressing
on the back burner; Furtado
has metamorphosized
from the nymph-poet of
Whoa, Nelly! to the—dare I
say it—voice of the liberal
world in Folklore.
She said in a Rolling Stone
interview more than a year
ago that Portuguese fado
music had always played a
large part in her musical
education. This is an urban
music with traditional
themes of longing, disappointment,
and ennui.
Though Whoa, Nelly! hinted
at these feelings in a few
songs, notably "Legend,"
this debut was more a showcase
of Furtado's range of
abilities: the result of which
leaned coquettish. However,
Nelly played the flirt in a
deep and pensive way.
The album gets more
exciting with each song, like
a movie or a novel. And
consider this: the first single,
"Powerless," is the second
song.
The first track, "One
Horse Pony," is not only a
retort to anyone who would
call Furtado a one-hit wonder,
but a prospectus of the
album itself. Though Folklore
lists the same producers
as Furtado's debut, the
magic created between
Nelly and her production
team is about the only vestige
left from her days as an
ingenue. Those of us who
recognized her talent in
Whoa, Nelly! will not be
disappointed, and those who
dismissed her- as "too pop"
will be impressed.
Dreamworks has given
Furtado room to try and see
her vision through, and the
result is music that raises the
bar. Furtado has three
songs: "Forca," "The Grass
is Green," and "Island of
Wonder," that are to pop as
OutKast's "Hey Ya" is to
rap. "Try" and "Build You
Up" are love songs that at
least match "Legend,"
which in my opinion was the
high point of Whoa, Nelly!
Folklore utilizes everything
from breakbeats to
Middle Eastern-sounding
melodies to acoustic guitars
that are placed to refresh as
carefully as the wine
imagery throughout the
lyrics. I can't think of
another such quantum leap.
If Furtado's soul was apparent
to you from her singles
of2001—it's going to knock
your socks. off you now.
Buy this CD—especially if
you are a snob. The absence
of Whoa, Nelly! can be forgiven,
but if you don't have
Folklore, you can hardly
claim to have a good eclectic
selection.
I tell you, Nelly Furtado
is a degree cooler than
ice cold.

Shakespeare's The
Tempest a hit with audience!
By Russell Harris
Do you crave mystery,
comedy, intrigue, and love
scenes? If so, you should see
one of the UW-Parkside
Theater Department's productions.
On October 24,
25, 31, and November 1,
2003, the UW-Parkside Theatre
Arts Department presented
William Shakespeare's
The Tempest in the
Communication Arts Theatre.
Hopefully, you were one
of the lucky people who
enjoyed this marvelous production.
The entire cast and
crew, which consisted of 75
people, gave powerful performances.
"This is Shakespeare's last
play and in many ways his
most complex and poetic.
It's a very challenging play
for actors, designers, and
technicians. Over the past
seven weeks the students,
staff, and faculty in the Theatre
Arts Department have
worked tirelessly on making
this show a reality. I commend
the entire production
team for successfully producing
one of the most
demanding and inspiring
plays in the Shakespeare
canon," said Director Dean
Yohnk.
When asked what she got
out of this play the most,
Assistant Stage Manager '
Karin Rondeau said, "The
biggest thing that I was able
to take out of the production
was the ability to interpret
Shakespeare and being able
to put a picture of his work
into my mind."
Brandon Anderson played
the role of Sebastian, brother
of King Alonso. Anderson
gave a masterful performance
and was a crowd
favorite. "It was very challenging
and complex. It was
great to see how everything
and everyone formed
together in making it happen,"
exclaimed Anderson.
Dr. Jonathon Shailor,
Chair of the UW-Parkside
Communication Department,
played the role of
Prospero, who is the exiled
Duke of Milan and an evil
magician. Shailor said, "Our
Theater Department is a real
first class act. The most
important attributes of a
good theater company are
love and discipline, and this
group has both in spades.
Dean Yohnk is an extremely
talented and dedicated
director, and he has really
helped me grow as an actor.
Keith Harris' set is an artistic
and engineering marvel,
and Judith Tucker-Snider's
costumes are gorgeous. The
student crew and actors
were all very professional
and a delight to work with."
His mother, Patti Pappas,
who was a radio personality
and child actress in New
York City in the 1930's,
influenced Dr. Shailor. "Our
home was full of music and
performances by my brothers,
myself, and our sisters—
we sang, danced, and recreated
sketches from "Rowan
and Martin's Laugh-In" (A
1960's comedy show) and
scenes from Marx Brothers'
movies."
Shailor started his collegiate
career at the University
of Massachusetts-Amherst
where he was a theater
major. He then changed to a
major in Communication
Education with an emphasis
in Theater Education. Dr.
Shailor completed a year of
study at the Roehamption
Institute in London, an
apprenticeship at the North
Shore Music Theater in Beverly,
Massachusetts, and several
workshops with Augusto
Boal, the famous Brazilian
director and social
activist. He directed theater
USEFUL DATING TIPS
By Emily Rasbornik
This book helped me to get
over a long term relationship. I think
the reason it helped so much was
because it gave me many revelations
on what I really want in a person and
it showed me what I can do differently
in my next relationship. Instead of
making out with random people and
dating people you don't really want to
date, read this book to form your view
on what is critical for your next hottie
to have, its a lot easier this way.
Everyone feels a longing to
have someone in their life who cares
about them and who they can care
about in return. People who deny
these feelings and think they don't
need to date are simply missing out.
I'm not saying we should date
everyone we meet, but we should
definitely look at the benefits of
dating. These benefits are shown
throughout the book, Boundaries in
Dating: Making Dating Work, by Dr.
Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.
Since almost everyone is interested in
dating, at least a little bit, we all
should leam some great tips on how to
date successfully . "Between
singleness and marriage lies the
journey of dating. Want to make your
road smooth as possible? Set and maintain
healthy boundaries...boundaries that will help
you grow in freedom, honesty, and
self-control."
Some people may not want to date
because: one, they don't want to give up their
freedoms; two, they don't want to experience
change; three, they are scared; and lastly, they
don't know how to.
Dating can bring a lot of good to your
life, but it does have the possibility to bring a
lot of bad. So that is why we need to set up
boundaries when dating. The reason boundaries
are necessary in life is because "boundaries
help you to be yourself, instead of losing
yourself in someone else" Everyone wants a
good healthy relationship, but how do you get
one? Do you know what you are looking for?
What about those who are already in a relationship,
do you understand how to deal with
problems that arise?
This book focuses on seeking personal
growth. It was awesome to find out that the
freedom people continually search for, lies
within themselves. At the end of each chapter,
they give you "take away tips"-things to
remember when dating. Here are three of my
favorite tips:
1. "Dating was never meant to cure
aloneness. It was meant to fulfill adult needs
for male-female romantic relationship on the
way toward marriage"
2."You must get to a
place where you are happy
with your life apart from dating
relationships in order to
be happy with another".
3. "If being attracted
to the wrong person is a pattern,
do not blame it on external
reasons, but take
responsibility for being the
one who has a problem and
work on finding its cause".
Their book is broken
up in four part. They are as
follows: Part one: You and
Your Boundaries, Part Two:
Whom Should I Date? Part
Three: Solving Dating
Problems, When you're part
of the problem, and Part Four:
Solving Dating Problems:
When your date is the
problem.
People have to take
responsibility for how they
feel. If you feel like you don't
know how to date, are scared
of dating because of past
experiences, or are dating and
feel like its going no where,
then take responsibility. Get
up and do something about
how you feel. One way of
finding answers is reading this
book, Boundaries in Dating:
productions for four and a
half years at the high school
level—in both New England
and in Jamaica, West Indies.
Dr. Shailor has acted in
almost two dozen roles—in
plays like Beauty and the
Beast, Romeo and Juliet,
and A Midsummer Night's
Dream.
After witnessing one of the
showings of The Tempest, it
became clear how much
effort was put into the production.
The lighting was
excellent, and the sets were
superb. Among the props
were lit torches and realistic-
looking swords, which
provided an authentic touch.
The intricate costumes
blended with the lighting
created a warming luminosity
on the stage. Each seen
was tastefully produced. In
one scene, real running
water was used to create a
waterfall sound effect. The
live singing echoed throughout
the theatre beautifully,
and the characters spoke
energetically and clearly.
The play had some humorous
scenes, too, giving the
audience some comic relief.
Hopefully, you saw this play
with your own eyes. If you
get a chance to see any of
the UW-Parkside Theater
productions you will not be
disappointed. Bravo and two
thumbs up to the UW-Parkside
Theater Department for
their incredible performance
of William Shakespeare's
The Tempest.
Making Dating Work by Dr.
Henry Cloud and Dr. John
Townsend.
It will change your life.

HOROSCOPES

Putting Way Too Much Pressure
on Yours truly
By Tracy Medek
I thought he was out of my life for good. No such luck. Mere days ago
that fluffy-faced pontificating demon-bear dared to flash his image across
my television screen. Smokey was his usual demanding, intimidating self,
pointing a fuzzy brown, accusatory finger right at me and soberly declaring,
"Only you can prevent forest fires."
Can you believe the nerve of that bear? As if I don't have enough to
worry about already—school, work, family situations. Now I have to be
held personally responsible for every careless, cigarette-flicking camper
and reckless bolt of lightning. I try to force him from my mind, but his
stare is intense; it bores into my very soul.
As the California wildfires rage out of control, I find it impossible to
shake off the insurmountable guilt. Logically, I realize there was no way
that I, Tracy Medek, resident of Kenosha, Wisconsin, could have done anything
to prevent the raging inferno on the Pacific Coast. But still...
Smokey, I'm begging you, please just leave me alone. I can't do it all
by myself. I do my part, I swear, but this harassment has got to stop.

And it's about time too!

Virgo (8/23-9/21)
You have many questions
about love this month, and
it's about time you figured
them out because I definitely
see romance in your
near future. Try to find out
what music was playing
while you were being conceived.
Yes, it's a bit of a
gross thought - but if your
mom or dad remembers, it
would be in your best interest
to listen to these songs.
Though cheesy, the lyrics of
these old songs will provide
much needed advice.
Libra (9/22-10/22)
Libra, you already know
this, but I must touch on the
subject. Your love life has
been on hold for quite
sometime now. No no.. .not
on hold, but it hung up on
you and changed it's number.
It's gone my friend.
Let's take a moment to
remember your life when it
was filled with sparks and
excitement and all that good
stuff.. .ah yes. Now, get out
and do something about it!
Scorpio (10/23-11/21)
Oh, Scorpio. You seem to
be on a roller-coaster of
emotion and I don't see it
stopping anytime soon. The
next month will be a series
of ups and downs, and it
will overwhelm you at
times. It would definitely
help to get your priorities
intact. You're going
through a lot and in order to
find happiness again, you
need to rediscover what
makes you happy.
Sagittarius (11/22-12/21)
I definitely see an abundance
of money and
friends around you this
month, Sagittarius. This is
your month to shine.
Everything is going your
way - so I'd definitely
advise you to spread some
of that love around. Pull
out all the stops and have a
huge party. After all, you
do share your birth month
with Britney Spears, and I
think she would be quite
disappointed if you didn't
celebrate.
Capricorn (12/22-1/19)
Tension has been building
between yourself and
someone very close to
you, and it's going to reach
it's peak this month. You
two won't be able to stand
it any longer, and an outburst
will lead to a much
needed talk. Figure out
once and for all what the
problem is, and if its worth
solving. You may find that
it's time to take a break.
Reassess your life without
the input of this person.
Aquarius (1/20-2/17)
You've been a bit hard to
deal with lately, but you
know this already. Friends
and coworkers are feeling
the effects of your near constant
bad mood, and they'c
like to see you cheer up
Stop taking things so seriously
and start having fun.
My advice: Find a perfect
stranger and tell them a big
funny story about how you
grew up in Hollywood and
your father was the star of an
80's sitcom. Make it up as
you go, and details are good
The stranger will be quite
interested and ask you lots
of questions. Giggle tc
yourself afterwards and go
about your day.
Pisces (2/18-3/19)
You know that person who
you see just about every
other day - the one you really
want to talk to for some
reason but just never have?
Well guess what... This is the
week to do it. Don't be shy
- they've been trying to
work up the courage to talk
to you as well. Talking to
this person will be very beneficial
to your happiness
and by January 13th, you
will understand why. Go out
for coffee and have a jolly
good time.

Everyone has either
known the jealous type,
been involved with the
jealous type, or is the
jealous type. I want to say
that in some cases, jealousy
maybe a normal feeling if a

Exposing
the Sexes I The Art of Jealousy

emotionally or physically.
So, please don't misconstrue
what I am trying to
get at. In the previously
mentioned situation jealousy
can be a signal that
something has gone wrong
or is going wrong. If that is
the case, step back from the
relationship. Don't be
jealous over someone

The kind of jealousy
I'm talking about is
selfish and fear based;
people who are in healthy
relationships and get jealous
over things like their

According to Kathy Labriola,

but actually it's a
whole bundle of feelings
that tend to be lumped
together." So, what is the
primary underlying emotion
that one feels when
they are jealous? Kathy
says that 50% is fear.
That's right ...50%! Other
feelings may be anger,
feeling powerless, betrayal,
or a number of other
emotions collectively making
up the other 50%. For
all those people who are
jealous over another's
looks, talents, money,
etc... try to realize that
you are fearful of
something. Well that's
what Kathy thinks anyway.
But is seems to make
sense, here's why: jealousy
is about fear... fear of the
unknown, maybe of
change, losing power or
control, fears of loss or
abandonment.
Basically, jealousy
is a reflection of our own
insecurities about our
worthiness and anxiety
about being inadequate.
We've all met the guy that
tried to make fun of
everyone or the stuck up
girl who thinks everyone is
lower than her, or the
girlfriend who won't let
her boyfriend talk to any
other female, even if she's
like 80. Anyone, who has
been subject to these kinds
of people and believe me,
we all have been, know
that there is a reason for
these types of jealousy and
about 50% is fear. In cases
like these, fear is not
reality. To base decisions
or actions on jealousy or
fear is not rational. When
jealousy starts to take over
someone's thoughts and
actions they usually are not
awarp it's hanneninp Thev
do not try to stop it o
deal with it, their resj
becomes "fight or fljj
they think their very
survival is threatened
Jealousy breai
apart relationships be
people start to detach
become controlling,
are the jealous type a:
yourself, what are yoi
ally afraid of? Being
jealous is such a drag
have the ability to sto
being jealous. Youfii
have to be willing to
realize, you are jealo
second, understand th
emotions or situations
behind them. Jealous
actually push away pe
who are close to you.
tears people down
internally.
By Henry Gaskins
I have two anecdotes to
share before coming to my
conclusion on jealousy.
Before I start, however, I'll
define the word as it applies
to relationships: an emotion
of suspicion from a competitor,
the competition
being for attention. I'm willing
to bet that more than
half of what people become
jealous of deals with the
attention game (no reference
to prior columns).
My last girlfriend and I
broke up at the beginning of
this semester. Two weeks
later, she had a new
boyfriend. I felt jealousy
burning throughout my
bloodstream. I knew I was
ready for the relationship to
be over, but because she was
immediately giving and
receiving attention to and
from another guy, I couldn't
stop my idiotic impulse to
interfere. Indeed, it was difficult
to control my jealousy.
I wont go into details on my
actions, but it was similar to
the first verse of Garth
Brooks' Friends in Low
Places. I'll take this opportunity
to apologize to my ex
right now, should she come
across this article. Sorry,
you.
Last week I was engaged
in friendly conversation with
a young attractive female at
a local bar. Ok, it was more
than a friendly conversation.
We were holding eye contact,
laughing, and playfully
touching each other.
About 20 minutes later,
my friend came up from
behind to warn me that the
girl's boyfriend was there,
and was ready to kick my
ass. I still can't believe she
didn't tell me she was in a
relationship.
I don't think it's worth
it to cause confrontation
between reasonable human
beings for the sole purpose
of a girl, so I ended my
conversation with her and
apologized to her
boyfriend, admitting I
never knew he existed.
That guy talked to me for
about half an hour,
explaining his deep love
for her and telling me how
he would do anything for
her. I just smiled and nodded.
But this guy was willing
to fight me, before I
defused any possible altercation.
So from my own
experiences, being jealous
and being "jealoused of',
my conclusion is that
jealousy is an easily
uncontrollable, highly
subjective emotion. It is
probably dangerous, as
well. We often hear of road
rage and hate crimes, but
I'm sure plenty of crimes
are brought on by jealousy.
I hate to give advice,
because I don't claim to be
an expert on anything but
my recommendation when
you find yourself jealous is
this:
-Relax
-Realize you are Jealc
-Relax again
-Plan your future
objectively
-Stay relaxed
Things may not af
go the way we wish,i
we are all bound to fil
people who can outdo
selves. However, if w
know the only thing 1
control is our own livi
and we utilize that po
then the world is our 1
ground.

Dear Emily,
When a guy finds himself in a room with six other men competing for
the attention of the one female in the room, what is his best option?
—Charismatic Ain't Cuttin' It
THE RANGER NEWS Decembers, 2003
Dear Charismatic Ain't Cuttin' It,
In regards to the situation you described above, which I am assuming
comes from your own embarrassingly unsatisfying and impotent experiences,
I am not too sure there necessarily is a "best option." Here are a
few good options though:
Casually approach the girl, tenderly flip her hair over her shoulder, and
whisper gently into her ear the five most important words to a female in
her situation: "Are you into gang banging?" It's one of those questions
you're going to kick yourself for years if you don't ask. It could be her
fantasy, and she just wanted a go-getter like you to initiate it. And who
knows, maybe you, the female, and the six other males could have an
amazing sexual experience. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
Sit back and pretend to be uninterested in the entire situation. The men
will continue to compete for her attention and will eventually attack each
other in a cannibalistic orgy (a la Elimidate). Just wait until you're the
last man standing and give her a suave wink. There's nothing sexier than
a winner-by-default.
Just leave the room. Let's face it, you are competing against six other
men, who are probably superior to you in every way imaginable, for one
woman's attention, and she's probably not even interested in you. If you
eject yourself from this situation, instead of being brutally rejected, you
will be empowering yourself. While you might not get the girl, your fragile
ego remains intact...for now.
Do you have question that you need answered, but can't afford to pay those greedy professionals at the

Dear Emily,
Why is it so hard for a single, moderately attractive guy to find a
female here at UW-Parkside? I mean this is my third semester here as a
senior and I have yet to find any females that are the slightest bit interested
in me. What's a single, all-around nice guy to do to solve this problem?
—Kindhearted in Kenosha
Dear Kindhearted in Kenosha,
You basically just spelled out the answer you were looking for. (Once
again, my talents as an advice columnist are rendered useless.) You're a
"kindhearted...all-around nice guy," and that's not what most females are
looking for. I hate to perpetuate stereotypes and generalizations, but from
what I have seen, this one is true: Many (not all) girls are attracted to
jerks. I can't explain why, and I don't even pretend to understand why,
but that seems to be the trend with a majority of the female students I
know. Nice guys finish last. Now that doesn't mean that you should
become an *sshole; rather you should continue to be your nice, kindhearted
self. Be that "good guy friend" (job description includes: holding
her hair when she pukes; picking her up and giving her rides at 3 a.m.,
no questions asked; and letting her cry on your shoulder) to all the girls
who fall for jerks, and eventually one will come around and realize that
you are the kind of guy she really wants. Oh wait, that's just a plot summary
of every romantic comedy involving Julia Roberts. If you want a
real world answer, I say focus on your studies so you can hopefully graduate
soon (before you become a sixth semester senior), get out into the
real world, and put the hellish time you had at Parkside - rejections, lack
of sex, complete invisibility to opposite sex, and everything else - behind
you. It may sound dismal and disappointing right now, but it's the only
thing that gets me up in the morning.
