Letter "From the •• •
Dear Parkside,
After all is said and done, I suppose the
process by which some goal was achieved is
looked back upon as necessary to the end
result. How come it seems that its much
more painful along the way than to simply
look back?
Whatever the answer, I know it's always
good to look back and say, "Damn! It's
done!"
Considering the fact that I've met many
great basketball athletes this semester, I
can't refrain from encouraging everyone to
go out and attend the men's and women's
games this semester. They're a ton of fun
for the audience and a big audience makes
the games even more fun for the players.
See you out there!
Yours Truly,
Sandee
Co-Editor -in-Chief
What's up, UW-P?
This being my first letter as co-editor-in-chief, there are a few issues I would like to
First, the staff of The Ranger News works extremely hard, sometimes late into the
evening and early morning. It is a tough job to run the newspaper, and a lot morework goes on
behind the scenes than simply writing, receiving, and editing. I want to send a shout out to a
members of our staff who continuously put other aspects of their lives on hold and tor their
dedication to this publication. Keep up the good work, guys (and gals)! Anyone interested in
helping out is welcome, wanted, and needed. .
In other news...I'd like to congratulate the women's soccer team on winning their
division and making it to the regional tournament. Good luck, girls! Check out University
Sports on page six for more information on the lady Rangers, as well as information on the
upcoming basketball season. r ,
The Police Beat is the most interesting part of our newspaper for some of our readers,
I think in part because people can look up themselves and say, "Ha! Ha! My ticket is in the
paper!" Of course, this is only my theory on why the Police Beat is so popular. The typing, editing,
layout, and design of the Police Beat is a very time consuming and tedious process, and
there is not a byline for the person who organizes it - our Arts and Entertainment Director,
Emily Rasbornik.
The semester is more than half over, UW-P. Eat it up. I highly encourage people to get
involved with student organizations, because there are a lot of opportunities you may never get
the chance to be a part of again. Besides, with every different type of organization, you are
bound to find something you are interested in.
Enjoy the issue and thanks for reading!

Make-a-Difference Day
More than 90 students and faculty from UW-Parkside spent time giving back
to their communities on Saturday, October 25 by participating in Make-a-Difference
Day events in Racine and Kenosha. Make-a-Difference Day is the largest
national day of volunteering in the U.S.
The Volunteers met in Ranger Hall at 8:00 a.m. to pick up lunch, T-shirts, and
directions to their project sites. The project sites were Women & Children Horizons,
Kenosha Area Family & Aging Services, Lincoln Lutheran, North Beach
Playground, Tech. Corp. Wisconsin, Bong Recreation Area, and the Racine Zoological
Society.
UW-Parkside clubs and organizations were well represented, and included ARU
Mentors, Black Student Union, Circle K, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Gamma
Alpha Omega Sorority, LPH, Omega Delta Phi, Parkside Asian Organization, Phi
Eta Sigma, Pre-Health Club, Psychology Club, and Sacred Circle.
5B: The Spookiest Apartment
on Campus
By Tracy Medek
This year marked the first Halloween Decoration contest for UW-Parkside campus
housing. Seven apartments signed up for the competition. Resident Advisor
Jason Pinkowski was one of the judges for the event. He predicts there will be
greater participation next year, providing that future RA's make the contest into a
tradition.
When asked how the judges came to a decision, Pinkowski remarked, "The decision
was pretty much unanimous. 5B just went above and beyond the other apartments."
Pinkowski added that the entire apartment was present for the judging,
and their enthusiasm only helped their cause.
For their impressive decorations, the residents of 5B have won a $30 pizza party
(supplied by the pizza establishment of their choosing) compliments of Felicia
Esters, the Hall Director for the University Apartments. Congratulations!
Play Reading:
Necessary Targets
A play reading by students and faculty of UW-Parkside
was held on November 8 and 9 at Union Square.
Necessary Targets: A Story of Women & War was presented
by the UW-Parkside Theatre Arts Department and
directed by Michael Snider.
The play told the story of two American women who
went to Bosnia to help women confront their memories of war.
It was about the violence of dark memories and the enduring
resilience of the human spirit.
The next play here will be Fuddy Meers, which will be
running from December 5-13 in the UW-Parkside Augie Wegner
Studio Theatre.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW
SENATORS AND SUFAC
MEMBERS
By Sandee Cornell
PSGA held senate elections on Friday October 24th,
2003. Of the 12 nominations, four students were voted
into senate. The four new senators are Jason Meekma,
Jeanni Simpson, Sandee Cornell, and Dave Biolik.
Senate also voted on Segregated University Fees Allocations
Committee (SUFAC) members. Among other duties,
SUFAC is responsible for allocating over 2 million dollars
to student organizations on campus. This year's SUFAC
director Dannie Moore joined by Dave Biolik, Xavier
Solis, Angie Gomez, Jerome Garret, Andrea Higgins, and
Jason Meekma are all entrusted with the responsibilities of
allocating money in an unbiased manner.
On November 7, 2003 President Sidhu appointed
SUFAC's Student At-Large position to Senator Benjamin
Stark who is also the Public Relations director in PSGA.
There was opposition to Senator Stark being appointed
to the seat for the mere reason that some senators felt that
no other PSGA directors should be appointed to SUFAC.
The student at-large position can potentially be any student
in the UW-Parkside. When asked, President Sidhu stated
that he had gone outside PSGA to find a qualified candidate,
but that he felt Senator Stark was the best candidate.

Other Issues In PSGA
October 31, 2003
Brian Tanner, United Council (UC) Shared Governance Director and Jennifer
Epps, UC Multicultural Director talked to PSGA about a proposal to
raise the Mandatory Refundable Fee (MRF).
The MRF is a fee UC charges the students who attend colleges that are
members of United Council. Parkside students currently pay a $1.35 MRF,
which supports UC's educational and lobby efforts including nine staff members,
two annual conferences, and other services.
UC feels it needs to raise the MRF to $2.00 to continue services and sustain
projects. The MRF needs to be adjusted for inflationary increases and to
address high costs in healthcare, office rental, travel, and conference costs.
PSGA voted in favor of the proposal to raise the MRF from $1.35 to S2.00
almost unanimously. There was one objection.
The MRF appears on tuition bills, and students who would like the fee
refunded can contact the United Council office within the first 45 days of
class to receive their refund plus postage. The students who get their fee
refunded should know that they would be ineligible to participate in any UC
General Assembly meetings and other UC activities.
Fees on the rise
Remember the days when the class drop fee was only $10? Ahh.. .those
were the days. Now the drop fee is $20! That means if you drop a four-credit
class, you have to shell out 80 bucks! So why the sudden rise from ten to
twenty dollars? Apparently, former PSGA President Kyle Kellogg approved
the ten-dollar increase over the summer when administration approached him
with the idea at which point President Kellogg should have approached senate
so it could have been voted on. Former president Kellogg approved the idea
without bringing it through senate, hence our $20 drop fee.
President Sidhu has brought the matter to the Chancellor Keating who
agreed to bring the matter up to his cabinet. PSGA is currently waiting on
the next step in lowering the drop fee.
In order to avoid paying the drop fees, a student must drop the class within
the first two weeks of the start of the class which is difficult, because many
students prefer to wait until midterms to drop.
The fees pay for electronic processes, software maintenance agreements,
phone lines and systems. Other fees involved are the transcript fee and the
graduation fee.

1984 performs at Union Square on October 28, 2003.
Back to 1984: A band of students
By Henry Gaskins
Their practice area is a huge open
room they rent on the north side of Racine.
When they first arrive, Charles Barrows sits
down behind the drums and immediately
starts pounding out beats, then stops for a
minute to make sure his computer and PA
system are set up right. Preston Brown and
Luke Eckblad casually pick up their guitars
and start tuning them. A minute later,
bassist Matt Waller comes in the room and
the melodic beats begin. The song is Building
an Empire.
"Building an Empire can be related
to America, or any community in general,"
said Luke, "but it's also about letting go
and venting your frustrations on a Friday
night."
The band explained that they aren't
out to become rock stars, and self-promotion
is not a trait they focus too much attention
on. "We just play, write, and perform,"
Charles said.
When they begin a practice, they
concentrate on their instruments until they
get the feel of the music they are making.
Then Preston will turn around and look at
Charles, make eye contact, and they both
will smile, because they know they are on
track. It is apparent that this is their paradise.
"The biggest reason we do this," said
Preston, "is because we genuinely like to
create music that we genuinely love."
Charles said the band sings about all
aspects of life - the positives and the negatives.
"We don't do too many love songs,
but we have a couple," said Preston. "It is
an important part of life."
For 1984, the process of creating a
song begins many different ways. "Sometimes
we'll be jammin' together and we'll
just go from there," said Luke. "If you have
the verse and chorus, that's gonna be like
the meat of the song," Charles added. "It's
definitely well thought out, but it's more an
'as you go' kind of thing. It's about taking
ideas, refining them, and letting the structure
grow."
1984 first started playing three
years ago. The name of their band is based
on a George Orwell novel, but the story of
the book has nothing to do with the band.
"It's a classic," said Preston. "Like 'The
Great Gatsby'. We had a list of names for
our band, and we decided on 1984
because it just sticks; it's easy to remember."
While recalling how the band started,
Luke said he and Preston were both
friends of Charles, but didn't really know
each other. Then they met and started to
jam in Luke's basement. Charles was in a
different band at the time, but occasionally
he would sit in and play drums for them.
Eventually, Charles decided to dedicate his
drumming skills to the music Preston and
Luke were making, and later they found a
bass player. The band was together for
about two years, when they took time off
to concentrate on other aspects of their
lives. They've been back together for
about eight months, but their old bass
player moved to Arizona, so they had to
find a new one: Matt Waller. "I've been in
a variety of different bands," said Matt,
"but I think 1984 is the one I've enjoyed
being a part of the most."
"When it hits home, I understand
how lucky I am to be making music with
these people," Luke said. "I can't honestly
fathom anything sounding better that I
could be a part of."
"It's an honest creative outlet," said
Charles. "It's as independent as anything
can get. We take our ideas and implement
them."
"1984 provides us with an opportunity
to create something original," said
Preston, "and that's really all we're trying
to do."
Local Rock at Union
Square
By Henry Gaskins
The Ranger News and 101.7 WIPZ presented
"1984" - a student band here at UW-Parkside - on
October 28th, at Union Square. More than 100 people
attended the event for free pizza, free drinks, and the
free music.
Both organizations that sponsored the show set
up tables with applications available for all students and
faculty interested in working with UW-Parkside's newspaper
or radio station. They also handed out a questionnaire
about life on campus and asked for suggestions on
ways to improve it.
The band 1984 played a set of nine original rock
songs. Their show lasted about 50 minutes, and by the
end of the performance members from the audience
were cheering, whistling, and applauding. Three members
of the band are students of UW-Parkside, and the
fourth plans to attend next year.

Milwaukee
Admirals Hockey
By Josh Kurz
Do you need something to do on a Friday or Saturday night and are
tired of the same boring things? Then why not go see the Milwaukee
Admirals at the Bradley center for some of the best hockey talent in the
country? Minor league hockey has been successful in Milwaukee for 27
years and is strongly supported by a group of great hockey fans.
Since the Admirals have joined the American Hockey League three
seasons ago, they are now the main minor league team for the NHL's
Nashville Predators. The AHL is considered the top minor league that the
NHL has, and just about every top prospect plays or has played in the
NHL.
If you know nothing about hockey, seeing a game is still fun. There
is always some sort of entertainment between periods, and you can see the
Admirals' mascot, Roscoe. Going to an Admirals game is also relatively
inexpensive; great seats can be purchased for less than $20.
So far this season the Admirals are off to a pretty good start. They
have a current record of three wins, one loss, three ties, and one overtime
loss. This includes only one loss in their previous five games. They are in
fourth place for their division, but that is skewed because the have played
fewer games than anyone else in their division.

Pack Your Cars We're
Going to the Regional
Tourney!
By Emily Rasbornik
Get ready for a great road trip. The UW-Parkside woman's
soccer team kicks butt this year. They won their conference and
are on their way to the regional tournament. There are only four
teams left in our region and UW-Parkside is one of them. Last
weekend the girls won the conference by defeating two tough
teams; the No. 1 ranked team, Northern Kentucky, in double over
time (3-2) and No. 3 ranked team, Indianapolis, in a shoot out (4-
2). The first round of regionals kicks off on Friday, November 14,
at 1:30 in Michigan. They will be playing the region's No. 1
which will either be Ashland (Ohio) or Grand Valley (Michigan)
State. This game is only three hours away so grab a friend, make
t-shirts, paint your face, and head out! This could be the college
experience you've been dying for...a wild road trip to support
you school.
By Russell Harris
Reporter
Nicole Roethig is
the new head coach of the
UW-Parkside Women's Volleyball
team. Nicole is the
eighth women's volleyball
coach in the 28-year history
of the sport. "I am more of
a defensive-oriented coach.
I plan to implement a
defensive style and techniques
which will hopefully
create more offensive
opportunities," said
Roethig. She is a Milwaukee
native and attended
Milwaukee Pius XI High
School where "she played in
the large volleyball program.
Roethig was a star at
Pius leading the Lady
Popes to four conference
championships and four
state titles. She earned a
scholarship to attend
Mankato State in Minnesota
where she was a setter and
earned all-conference honors
as a senior, earned her
degree in Physical Education.
She did her graduate
study at UW-LaCrosse and
worked as a second assistant
volleyball coach at
Winona State. She received
her Master's Degree in
Human Performance from
UW-LaCrosse in 2001. In
2002 and 2003, Roethig
served as the top assistant
coach for the women's volleyball
team at South Dakota
State University. While
she was there, the Jackrabbits
finished as NCAA
Division II runners-up in
2002 and were regional
runners-up in 2003. After
her senior year in college,
Coach Roethig decided that
she did not want to leave
volleyball behind and is
now in her fifth year of college
coaching.
Coach Roethig also
says, "I am very happy
about being back in this
area and I am very comfortable
working here at UWParkside.
I am thankful for
this chance and for the support
given to me from Dave
Williams (the Athletic
Director here at Parkside).
This is a great experience."
The Lady Rangers'
biggest goal is to reach the
conference tournament.
Their record demonstrates
that they are well on their
way. Once they finish, they
will assess future goals.
When asked which is the
one word that best
describes the team's play
the best, Roethig said,
"Tenacious." Assistant
Coach Rob Wolter says,
"When the team performs
well and plays at their
potential they are tough to
beat." The team will be
missing its top player from
last season, Katie Rassch.
Also missing from last
year's team are Leah
Dugan, Angela Clark, and
Nichole Gruber. Six players
are returning however, so
the Rangers have a good
foundation on which they
can grow.
Coach Roethig said
that more students should
attend women's volleyball
games because, "The speed
of the college game has
picked up and is more
exciting than ever. It is a
completely different game
these days." The Lady
Rangers would really
appreciate the support of
UW-Parkside students.
In addition, Coach
Roethig wants to see her
players excel outside of
volleyball. "I hope that I
can help them have a wellbalanced
life and to be
well-rounded. I want them
to enjoy their time with
friends and family,"
explained Roethig.
While prying for one thing
that nobody else knows
about her at UW-Parkside, I
learned of one of Roethig's
past jobs. Roethig said "I
cleaned Bob Uecker's
house one time while I was
a graduate student trying to
earn a few bucks! I saw all
of his Mr. Belvedere stuff
and everything!"
Coach Roethig is a
very nice addition to the
UW-Parkside Athletic Program.
We all welcome you
to campus and wish you the
best of luck! Don't forget
to stop by the field house to
see the Lady Rangers in
action.

Excellence in Research and Creative
By Emily Rasbornik Award Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz is a communication Professor who recently
received the 2003 Excellence in Research and Creative Activity
Award from Parkside Chancellor. This award is based on the quality
and originality of her research and the impact of her research on the
field of communication.
Anyone who has taken Wendy's classes knows that she is a "bucket of
knowledge," as one of her students, Julie Liske, recently suggested.
Don't expect to slack in her classes but do expect to come out feeling
as though she has poured some of her bucket into you.
Here are some of the ways Wendy filled her bucket: She earned her
BA at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and her MA
and PhD from the university of Pennsylvania.
Wendy's major research areas are language and social interaction and
intercultural communication. She is an active editor, referee, and conference
organizer. Among her numerous publications are the following
books: Communication In Everyday Life: A social Interpretation,
Semiotics and Communication: Signs, Codes, Cultures, Social
Approaches to the story of Communication, Wedding as Text: Communicating
Cultural Identities Through Ritual. She has also published
over four dozen short pieces. She has served as Vice Chair and
then Chair of the Language and Social Interaction Division of the
International Communication Association, and is currently Vice Chair
of the Semiotics and Communication Commission of the
National Communication Association. '
Her credentials say a lot, but so does her ability to teach,
help others grow, and take on the 2003 Excellence in
Research and Creativity Award. Next time you see Wendy
make sure to congratulate her on her hard work and recent
award!

Student Job Applications
Still Blank Half Through
Semester
HUMOR
By William Brinkman
Freshman John Andrew's desk is still cluttered with blank job
applications from the beginning of the semester, much to his parent's
chagrin.
"Every week we call and he says he's just out the door to a job
interview, I hear a can open, and then he's off the phone," reported Mrs.
Andrews..
"I know college is a very trying time, with 101 classes being the
toughest and most intellectually trying time of a student's career, but
maybe it's time for us to stop footing every bill and time for him to get a
part-time job," interjected Mr. Andrews.
"Once I almost cleaned off the desk to do homework, but I
thought 'What if my parents see me jobless?' Then at least I could show
them the applications so they can see I'm dedicated to getting off their
credit card," said John.
Why would parents give their teenage son access to a card that
offers funds without the feeling of parting with hard-earned cash?
The parents complained, "It was only for emergencies, and those
emergencies seem to come with cheese and sausage. The economy is
tough right now and that has to affect the 'would you like fries with that'
and 'did you want to see that sweater in a large' sectors, respectively."
With respect to the fact that his parents may someday actually follow
up on one of their many empty threats, John laid out his plans for
becoming one of the working masses while he tries to keep his GPA over

Maybe if I could find a job that involved playing Playstation 2 and

Who's the biggest idiot?
UW-Parkside students voice their opinions...
By Russell Harris
Reporter
Recently, some UW-Parkside students were asked the question:
Who is the biggest idiot in the world today? This question drew various
responses as expected and here is what some students had to say:
Jess Petre, a junior English major, and another anonymous
respondent both said that Arnold Schwarzeneger is the biggest idiot. The
next two participants wished to remain anonymous and said that President
Bush is an idiot. Junior Dan Gashaw and junior Patrick Griffiths
said that the idiot is Rush Limbaugh.
Sophomore John Krueser says it has to be Jessica Simpson from
MTV's show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Noah, a sophomore, says
that it is John Madden because of the way he contradicts himself while
speaking.
In mY opinion Paul McGuire of ESPN Sunday Night Football is
the biggest idiot. He seems to just rag on one of the teams playing during
those games!
Brian, a senior, says, "Any individual who uses malicious intent
(blind hatred) to harm or hurt another individual by physical, verbal, psychological,
and or emotional means is the biggest idiot."
Finally, one respondent says it is some guy who cut in front of her
in l ine at the cafeteria the other day. The nerve!
Professors:
Frankly I'm Sick and Tired of all this
Learning
By Tracy Medek
All right, professors, I get it. You're trying to make me into
a cerebral, critical thinker; to expose me to new ideas, views, and
insights; to help me become a well-rounded individual whose future
contributions will be as innovative as they will be socially responsible.
But come on, aren't you taking this education thing a little too
seriously?
To be brutally honest, this whole college-thing is turning out
to be an exhausting and time-consuming endeavor. I hate to say it
professors, but I'm starting to resent you a bit. Okay, okay, I'm
fairly willing to attend class most of the time, but can't we end it
there? Instead you've got to push me to my breaking point: The
quizzes, exams, research papers, and always with the homework.
The question at hand seems to be: When will all this rampant
learning end? The general consensus among university professors
is that learning lasts a lifetime; a terrifying prospect! Is there
any solace in graduation, then? The answer: a firm, unwavering
"No!" There's not even a momentary lapse, and interim of blissful
mental stagnation.
Well, thanks a lot, you guys.
I guess it's time to get back to my truckload of homework,
to my learning. And just so you know, I'm missing Seinfeld.

Exposing
the Sexes:
The Art of Movement
By Henry Gaskins
(Note from the writer: I have
never used so many parentheses in my
iife.)
Body language (a term we are
not supposed to use when discussing
the movements people use to achieve
attention from a person of attraction,
according to some sort of communication
class the female on the opposite
side of this column told me about) is
an art in itself.
When a person finds someone
attractive, movement and positioning
seem to be a key aspect in receiving
equal attention. For instance, a person
probably would want to position themselves
in a place where the object of
infatuation (or possibly to be more
politically correct: person of
attraction) will notice them more, or
make sudden movements that will
draw attention to them with the intention
of this person will fall equally
infatuated with.
God, is that confusing
enough?
Alright, let me break it down
further. If a single guy is in class,
wouldn't he want to sit as close as
possible to the girl who he thinks is
the most attractive? (By attractive, I
mean for any reason; intelligence,
looks, bra size, etc.) If the answer is
no, then I guess I truly am one of a
kind. But in most cases, I think he
would. On the same point, guys, if
you're standing outside smoking a
cigarette or chillin' with friends by
the doorway of our beloved school
and you see a girl you might be
attracted to, would you not open the
door for her just to see if she looks
at you differently, if only for a second?
For sure I would, and by the
end of this third paragraph, I hope
you are understanding what this
issue of The Ranger News 'Exposing
the Sexes column is about: The Art
of Being a Complete Jackass.
Constantly I find myself
doing whatever possible to gain
attention from any random girl I
find attractive. I've done everything
from purposely injuring
myself trying to gain medical help
from girls to charismatically dropping
my pencil in front of girls trying
to gain better position for
attention. Sometimes it's helped
me to get a number, to go on a
date, or even to develop a shortterm
relationship, yet today I'm
single and looking. This leads me
to an assumption on which I base
my relationship theory: If you
can't go naturally about finding a
person of attraction, there will
never be a positive final result.
There is one small gesture I
think has more class than any
other, and that is the wink. The
wink (when not over-used) gives
off the subtle hint that "Hey, you
are in my scope." I wink very
rarely, usually only when I'm staring
at a girl and she looks up at me
and we hold our eye contact for at
least three seconds. Of course, I
don't plan the wink; I feel out
when it's most appropriate.
(Disclaimer: I don't claim to know
the best tactics and/or strategies on
flirting, I just say what is in my
mind. After all, I am single, so you
might not want to trust me.)
I do believe that movement
and positioning are an important
part of finding a mate, but see how
much longer your relationships
will last when you find yourself
looking for the same book in the
library as a person of attraction.
Talk to him or her naturally, and
when you find yourself having
nothing else to say, wink.
By Emily Rasbornik
He was mad. He said nothing,
but I could tell he was mad because
his face said it all. He gave me the
look. Everyone knows that look. I
had seen it from my dad after every
one of my seven car accidents. I
could tell I had hit a nerve that went
deep. I was scared to talk to him
about the accidents because I thought
he was mad at me. I did not want to
be scolded, I already felt bad enough.
To me the look meant I was in trouble.
But to my surprise he wasn't
mad. He was concerned and worried.
I did not get scolded , I got "talked
to". I made all these assumptions
about the look. I thought I knew what
it meant. I realized body movements
are more clearly understood once you
talk to the person and hear what the
person is thinking.
Non-verbal communication is
inct oc imnnrtQnt oc Fnr
instance, when I am out with my
friends and a guy with bad alcoholic
breath approaches me, I will
talk kindly to him, but deep down
I am praying that he picks up my
signals. Girls, you know what I
am talking about. We turn our
bodies away, we do not look them
in the eye to avoid boring conversation
and we do not really
engage in the conversation, but
instead give one-word answers.
Our attention is elsewhere. But
he doesn't get it. He may be confused
because I am talking to him
and I am not being clear about
what I am really feeling. So he
may keep trying to talk to me to
try and figure out what is going
on. I think body movements can
be effective, but they do not work
alone. It is not easy to understand
what someone is feeling if they do
not say what they are really thinking.
Ever visit an ex in hopes
of better understanding what they
are feeling about you? My friend
told me about a sad breakup. A
couple of months after the
breakup, she went to visit the ex
to see how things were going.
She could tell right away that he
was still shaken up because he
was speechless. Movements were
all he had to offer. A long eye
gaze, a five-minute hug, and then
detachment. After the long
awaited hug he walked away, sat
on the sofa, and put his face in
his hands. He couldn't speak; it
looked as though he was experiencing
many emotions all at one
time. All he had to offer at that
moment were movements, which
told my friend he wasn't ready to
talk. So when no response was
given she simply said, "When
your ready to talk, call me."
Then she turned around and left.
What else did she have to do?
His body movements were
telling her only a part of what he
was feeling. She was waiting for
him to say the rest. We need to
attend to both body movements
and speech.
Being able to express yourself is
important, verbally and non-verbally.
I know you have heard the
saying, "Actions speak louder
than words." But that doesn't
mean words do not speak. The
words say what the actions
mean. Are weddings silent?
Nope. The main part of a wedding
is the vows. Whether you
say traditional vows or you make
your own, you are verbally
expressing commitment and love
to one another. Then you seal it
with a movement, the kiss. Body
movements and verbal communication
mean so much, but one
without the other is like bread
without the butter.
Even when you have a bed
buddy you have to specify the
emotional boundaries of what your
actions are meaning. If you do not
talk about the meaning behind the
action it can be misconstrued into
acts of love and will create great
chaos in both peoples lives.
Are you aware of the signals you
send?

Dear Emily,
I was friends with this gal for a couple months and her friends
always told me she wanted to be with me. I never got a chance to talk to
her about it, because when we would make plans, she would always
break them for some reason. We haven't talked for about two weeks.
Why is she being so weird?
-Lonely in Kenosha
Dear Lonely in Kenosha,
The question is not why is she being so weird, but why are you
being so weird? Maybe she keeps on breaking plans with you because
you considers her "this gal I was friends with." Those are two words that
a woman who wants to be with you doesn't want to be called. In fact,
excluding my Aunt Martha, no female in the world wants to be called
gal. I think that she is trying to tell you something by all those broken
plans and the fact that she hasn't made any contact with you in two
weeks, so once again I will fulfill my duty as Universal Interpreter of
Sexual Attraction and tell you straight up she probably doesn't want to be
with you. She might just be too nice or shy to say it, or she thinks she is
letting you off easily. Call her/email her/IM her one more time and ask
nonchalantly if she would like to "get together and talk" or something
like that. If she doesn't reply or she breaks the plans again, seek closure
by getting very drunk and sleeping with her best friend. I know your
going to argue with me, claiming her friends say that she wants to be
with you, I seriously am not seeing that being true from what you have
told me. Have you ever seen Carrie, where the cool popular teenagers
play a cruel joke on Carrie by telling her that one of the hottest most popular
boys wants to take her to prom? That's a good movie, but you definitely
don't want to end up with blood all over your handmade prom
dress in a high school gymnasium.

Dear Emily,
I'm a female student at UW-Parkside, and I met this guy at the
beginning of last year. We were friends for a couple of months, but we
stopped communicating. A few months after that and until now, when I
see him he is always staring at me, long enough for me to notice. Every
now and then I would catch him in a daze and even smiling. He makes it
known that he likes me, but he never approaches me! What does this
mean? What should I do?

Dear Question Mark,
Clever name. Ha. Ha.
I wish the written word could
express my insincerity more
accurately. Getting back to
your question though, I have a
few of my own to ask you.
First of all, what do you mean
when you say, "we stopped
communicating"? People who
stay in the same vicinity and have the same interests never mutually stop
communicating. Who ended the "communication," you or him? And
Why? Secondly, why would you assume that just because someone is
staring at you that they like you and they are making it known that they
like you in the act of staring? He could either a) have a staring problem,
b) be incredibly stoned out of his mind every time you see him, c) think
your body is more sexually appealing to his eye than whoever is next to
you (which, by the way, is not the same as him liking you), d) be staring
at whoever is next to you, but you just assume its you, or e) all of the
above. I hate to sound like a cold-hearted B#!*! but not everyone stares
romantically into the eyes of the one they most admire. It sounds like you
like him, and that is why you are irked that he doesn't approach you. The
days of chivalry and courting are dead, and it wouldn't be unheard of for
you to approach him, even if its just to talk about why you two stopped
communicating. If you get rejected, give Lonely in Kenosha a call and
console each other with a tender night of raw animal-like sex.
