Kellogg ousted from PSGA presidency
ey Nick ~aurenzi .
On September 26, 2003, the Parkside Student Government Association Senate
(PSGA) remoyed President Kyle Kellogg fr?m office during the General Assembly meeting
by a margm of two votes. Sen~tor Danme Moo~e m~de the motion to impeach Kellogg
on September 12, ?003 accust~g Kellogg of vtolatmg Article IX of the Segregated
University Fees Allocations Committee (SUFAC) procedures. SUFAC by-laws state,
"Only SUFAC has the power to a~end b~dge~ recommendations._" The General Assembly
of Senators found Kellogg gmlty of V10latmg these terms dunng a summer internship
he not only formed and participated in, but also received a salary of $3,000 from.
Moore stated that Kellogg breached the SUFAC by-laws when he amended the
amount of stipends interns would receive to $3,000 without submitting it to the senate.
"Through his actions, [Kyle Kellogg] has displayed a lack of respect and total disregard
for the Constitution and by-laws for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Student
Government Association as well as the Segregated University Fees Allocations Committee
by-laws," said Moore before the General Assembly at the impeachment hearing.
Moore acted as lead prosecutor during the trial along with Senators Jason
Pinkowski and Jerome Garret.
The team attacked Kellogg on the grounds that be produced no tangible results.
Senator Pinkowski interviewed members of the Executive Board of Directors and found
that the directors themselves did some of the accomplishments Kellogg claimed to have
done during the internship. In closing, the prosecution hammered in the idea that most

the summer break to prepare for the coming year for no method of payment.
"Why would you appoint yourself to do duties on what you're supposed to do?"
said Senator Garret.
President Kellogg acted as his own defense and relied on his own testimony and
that of a food service worker who witnessed him around during the summer. When questioned
by Chief Justice Staszewski, it was revealed that the service worker could not say
specifically when she saw Kellogg or exactly what he was doing. When asked point
blank, "Do you know anything relevant?" the server admitted that she knew nothing
regarding the allegations relating to the trial. She did add that, "[The Senators] haven't
given him a chance."
Kellogg stated repeatedly that the Dean of Students and the finical office bad validated
his actions and that he was using the internship as a chance to learn from the previous
administration. Being a resident of Minnesota, Kellogg said that the $3,000 ~as
what he used to live off of during the summer and stay on campus to work on the mtemsbip,
as he would not have been able to stay in Wisconsin_ otherwise: .
His pleas did not sway his peers. After a brief closed session for deh~erations, the Senate
reopened the impeachment trial and began a vote by secret ballot. With a vote of twentyfive
"yea" to twelve "nay" votes, Kyle Kellogg was removed from power.

5 THE RANGER NEWS =- October 6, 2003 "Perspectives on
Religious Issues"
By: Josh Kurz
~t noon Mon~ay, October 6,. "Perspectives on Religious
Issues" will be sponsonng a presentatton by Professor of Business and
Technology Marwan Wafa entitled "Muslim Ethics and the Middle
East Crisis" in Union 106.
Marwan Wafa is a Muslim who was born in Kuwait and later
moved to the Unit~d Sta~es. H~ is _the president of the Islamic Society
of Southeas~em_ W1sco~sm, which _is a _three-year-old non-profit religious
org~mzatton_. This presentatto~ 1s a way for students and faculty
to gather mfonnatlon and understand mg of the Islamic faith.
According to Professor Wafa, there is a great deal of misunderstanding
about the ~usl_i~ religion. He ~e~ieves that the worst enemy of
human bemgs 1s 1gnoranc~. Tots 1s not omly true in religion, but in
many facets of everyday hfe. How many times do we judge something
or som~one without knowing an}'.thing about it or them? Many
people associate the bombs and explosions we see on the nightly
news. But this is not accurate. The Islamic religion wants people to
live in peace and harmony. It also values culture, tradition, and faith.
Ona of the biggest misunderstandings when it comes to the
Islamic religion is the term ''jihad." Many people think that it means
"holy war" and violence. What it really means is "effort and struggle".
This, again, applies to everyday life. It can describe someone doing a
research paper, someone who is struggling to study for an exam,
someone who is having trouble in their relationship etc ...
Professor Wafa will discuss will be how the Muslim Religion
views forgiveness, violence, and death. When dealing with death, the
Islamic faith believes that there is a heaven and a hell and that there is
a day of judgment where God is the supreme judge. Each person in
Islam encompasses protection and preservation of life, not destroy life,
and working towards justice for all people.
This presentation should be very interesting and informative. If you
have any questions you can call Marwan Wafa at (262) 595-2243 or
send an e-mail to him at wafa@uwp.edu.

A Chat With a UW-Parkside
Rugby Player ...
By Russell Harris
UW-Parkside Rugby Team Vice-President and fullback, Nate Thurman, took some time to speak with
The Ranger News about some aspects of the sport of Rugby and about the current season. Thurman, a 22-
year-old Anthropology major, is currently in his second season with the team. UW-Parkside does not currently
have a women's rugby team.
"Rugby is derived from American football," said Thurman.
UW-Parkside has had a rugby team since 1997. Since then, the head coach has been Dr. John Murphy.
Murphy came to the rugby team with a wealth of experience, as both a coach and a player. He was the
head coach at the University of Saint Thomas and the UW-Stout, and was assistant coach at the UW-Eau
Claire. The assistant coach is Todd Streeter. The team's president is Will Traber. Thurman developed his
interest in the sport when he was 21 years old. A friend of his asked him to play and Thurman said be loved
it.
"We have about 25-30 players on the team this year, and most of them are rookies," said Thurman.
·'Seeing as how our team is dominated by rookies we hope to be good this season, but not excellent."
The team plays about five or six games per year. Admission to the games is free and students are
encouraged to attend road games. The rugby team plays on Saturdays competing against other Wisconsin collegiate
teams. They play against men club teams in spring.
When asked about the strain of schoolwork, his job personal life, and his responsibilities with the
Student Organizational Council, Thurman said, "It's not too hard. We only practice twice a week, so it's not
bad. It's always fun watching people just kick the crap out of each other!" For further information regarding
the UW-Parkside rugby team please visit www.uwp.edu. Under key word rugby.

''He has game."
"Let's go spit some game."
"She's fair game."
Phrases such as these are common in today's world, but
they may be difficult to understand. What is "the game"? Is it dating
in general? Or does it refer to the way people approach and deal
with others whom they are attracted to? [ don't think there is a set
definition, but that may be obvious because there isn't really a clearcut
meaning to the word "game". Almost everyone knows what a
game is, but really, try to define the term. It's hard. So when people
talk to me about "the game", I may understand they are talking
about human attraction and interaction, but I don't really understand
why the word itself is used.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines "game" in several
different ways. I'll go through most of the definitions and try to
relate them to human attraction and interaction. By doing this, I
hope to realize ''the game"; what it is, why we play, and if it is at all
necessary.
The first definition is "an activity providing entertainment
or amusement; pastime". Ifl try to relate this to human attraction
and interaction, then I can only understand "game" to mean dating
for no reason but fun. Dating people we may be attracted to for our
own entertainment or amusement. I must admit, dating is one of my
favorite pastimes, so I can see this as a working definition of ''the
game".
The second definition is "a competitive activity or sport''.
So again, ifl were to consider dating a game, then by this definition
it would mean to compete against other people who may be interested
in the same individual I might be. Or I may be competing against
the person who I would be dating, where we both come into the relationship
with our own tactics and strategies. I can see why this could
be a good definition as well, because with my experience in dating,
it seems like I am either on the defense or the offense, trying to get
the other person to like me more then I like them. It can almost be a
constant battle of who is more interesting. I personally hate this battle
because I usually end up showing off, which is the idiot's way of
being interesting.
Definition number three is "the total number of points
required to win a game". Alright, this could probably only fit our
definition if, for instance, a group of guys are competing for a set
number of girls and the first person to achieve the set number wins
the game. For example, "Oh, Jerry kissed five girls before anyone
else. That's game."
The fourth and fifth definitions are similar. They are "a
particular style or manner of playing a game" and "a calculated
strategy or scheme". In other words, do you play by gracefully opening
doors for someone you just met, or do you sit at home and try to
rationalize what your next move should be? Are you the strong silent
type, or the charismatic outspoken type? What is the game you
bring, and bow do you bring it? ·
Number six is ''wild animals: rabbits, birds, etc." I have a
friend who uses the term "chick hunting" to refer to us going out on
the town looking for girls. Are girls then our "game" in this sense?
Are they animals my friends and I hunt? I can see this as a working
definition because just as a hunter has to make the right moves to
catch his game, we must make the right moves to attract our person
of interest.
Finally, definition number seven states game as "an object
of attack or pursuit; fair game". So, for example, when my friends
and I are at a bar gazing at a girl who happens to be single, she is
fair game, the object of attack and the one we pursue. It is close definition
number six. The "game", by these definitions, is a noun.
In short, I would say almost everyone who dates or at least
interacts with a person they are attracted to uses "game" in one way
or another. This makes it a valid and understandable term. What is
important, I believe, is when a person can stop playing, stop hunting,
and start relaxing. This probably happens when a two people find
each other, are content, and are able to relax. I assume this is when
serious relationships take place and marriage has a possibility, but
that's probably a whole new game.
So many questions about ''the game" remain, and I have
not the knowledge or insight to rightfully answer most of them but I
think if you don't play, you can't learn. '

What's with all the game playing? Why
aren't people willing to commit? I've ~-en analY2Ulg
"the game".
Why do people continue to play the game
when they gain nothing? One day they like a person,
the next day they don't, and then they think that the
other person is weird? No it's themselves, It's called a
quick fot. They feel like cmp so they jump into something
with out realizing who or what they leaped into.
Let the game begin. .
Let's give our players names, Jill and Jack.
Jill thinks that Jack looks good in a lot of ways, the
physical attraction is there ond Jack is a great kisser,
But remember that Jill wanted a quick fix and all of the
sudden she is calling Jack every other day. They are
hanging out all the time and for the most pan Jill b
feeling well. Then Jack hit!; a foul ball. .H~ want:; more
of Jill's time to talk about the future. This 1s when Jill
truces an emotional time out and thinks "Wow! I haven"t
hung out with my friends in o while". Jill tells Jack,
"This week is really busy with school, work, and I'm
missing my mends." She thinks this will abide enough
time to think of a new play.
Then Jill strategies: " I don't want Jack completely
gone because, he looks good, is a great kisser,
and well ... now I somewhat like his company and the
way he makes me feel". Already distancing hcr;elf, Jill
finally gave Jack a half-hour of her time to l~lk about
the future followed by a great make-out session. Jill
says bow she feels with out mentioning the fa,t that she
doesn't reallv want a future.
Now Jill is sprinting towards second ba~.
She's still in the game and thinks shc'i. winning because
she's gotten her quick fix for the night. But a couple of
days later. she's strikes-out by being caught getting
another guys phone number. Jill has got to get her head
in the game. She fools Jack ugain by saying that be
looks good, kisses great, and again, she thinks the company
is awesome.
Jill is on second about to steal third when
Jack wants to take a time out because he almost caught
her stealing third. Jill thinks it's Jack's fault she almost
stole third, because he was taking too long. Jill violent•
ly throw's her hat otfto gain his attention. Now she
has nothing left to do but tell him she loves him. Now
She's home free. She's up by one run, which 1s that's
all that matters, because she's winning. She has him in
her hand. Jill thmks that her team is better and the
game in uneven now. She starts throwing curve balls at
his face by not being real and again thinks it is his fault
that be got hit because he should have seen it coming.
Jill goes over and picks up Jack so that he can play in
her game.
Jill starts picking out Jack's team uniforms
and telling him how to play the game that Jill designed.
These ups and downs keep Jack (the opposing player)
confused and always wondering when he can get on
base. Sooner or later Jill forfeits, because there's no
more competition. She was winning all the time.
There's no more game. She got bored. Even when she
tried to create a new play it was ruined because Jack
stopped playing. So she's done, she's walking away.
But remember Jill wanted the quick fix, she felt like
crap and she started the game with someone that she
didn't even know. She didn't read up on his plays, she
didn't even care about him. Jill only cared about herself,
but liked to blame Jack.
Game over. Jill has gained nothing. She
brought herself up and down these hills all because Jack
was hot, a great kisser, and good company.
This scenario can be switched to Jack and Jill,
Jack ·and Steve or Jill and Amy but whomever its with,
people get themselves in these types of situations
because they don't want to see themselves for who they
really are. They don't want to have self-control n this
area. When playing this game you are left with crazy
people and more problems. Although feelings and
emotions can be useful we don't need to live otfthem.
If you really want to find yourself! believe you shouJd
delay the gratification of relationships, learn more about
yourself, meet new people, establish life-long friends,
then mature and learn what your really looking for.
Don't fall in to the empty trap of the game. Get into
relationships with someone for who they really are.
~emember that plenty of people can be hot, great
k1ssers, and good company, but if you want to learn the
art of winning, don't play the game.

it true that I can get free condoms from the Student Health and Counseling Center? What about birth control?
omy Guy

· ,my Guy,
:ase contain your sexual urges while I try to explain the condom situation on campus. Many universities do distribute free condoms, but this is UW-Parkside, so don't expect
1ch. Unfortunately, the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) does not offer free condoms, but they do offer protection at a price that is almost free. For the low cost of
you can get 8 condoms or 2 dental dams (a thin sheet of latex which serves as a protective barrier in oral-genital or oral-anal contact for those of you who aren't familiar with the
m). For S4 you can get three female condoms. While these options might not be free, they are a lot cheaper than an STD, an unexpected pregnancy, or an abortion in the long run.
t •casionally, Peer Health Educators, a student organization associated with SHCC, the Womyn's Center and other organizations will sponsor events or host informational tables on
mpus where free condoms are offered. So make like all the other poor horny college students and stock up by grabbing handfuls of condoms every time you walk past the table.
hatever you do, whomever you do, just be sure to WRAP IT UP. "'I for the ladies: The Pill, the Patch, and the Depo-Shot are also offered at insanely low prices, and while these might prevent you from having to break the news to mother over an
kward Thanksgiving Dinner that you got knocked up at college, they will not protect you from STDs.
I
!ar Emily,
un 20 years old and a junior at UW-Parkside. I have always been friendly with older and more mature people, because I don't really get along with people who are my age.
• :cently "Jake," a 35-year-old returning student who I have known for about a year asked me on a date. He's really nice and I have hung out with him a few times around campus. I
cepted the date and really want things to work out between Jake and I, but I am afraid that the age difference might be too much to overcome. What do you think?
om Too Late
:ar Born Too Late,
bell, as I always say: age is just a number, unless you 're a pedophile, then it's incriminating evidence. But since you are both consenting adults who realize what you want out of
e relationship, I say go ahead. I have never met Jake, but I respect him because of the fact that he wants to get something out of his life and is coming back for an education. But
e I were you, I would do a search on his name at www.pac-info.com, an on line public record database (and one of my favorite websites!) just to make sure he's not hiding his past
)m you. Let's face it 35 years is enough time for one man to get in and out ofa lot of trouble. Yeah he's really old compared to you, but if you feel a connection to him, you might
well see what is there. Two tips for your first date: I. Bring a cell phone with you and be sure friends know where you are going, 2. Don't call him "Daddy" on the first
t te .. unless that sort of thing turns him on.
