The com- mittee had been holding their lourmeetings a year in the Gal- braithroom located in the area adjacent to Chancellor Jack Keating's office. Professor Laura Gellot, for- mer chair of the Academic Actions Committee, had moved to conduct the meetings in the Galbraith Room in the mid- I980s. Before that time the meeting were held in various classrooms around campus. Thiswas unsuitable as it did not t offerthe students enough priva- cy,therewas no access to a tele- phone, the students often were I not sure of where to go and uponarriving had only the floor as a place to wait for their meet- ing.At the time the committee felt that the area around the Chancellor's office put the due seriousness to the meeting that wasgoing to be held. The Galbraith room seemed to answer all the problems that the committee had been deal- ing with. It offered a waiting area,a telephone, privacy and even a separate room that the student would be taken to so thathe or she would be able to I hearthe verdict of the commit- tee'svote in a private location. By conducting the meetings in on the Inside ( the Galbraith Room the com- mittee would not have to find a new location upon every meet- ing. The Academic Actions Com- mittee held their latest meeting in a room in Tallent Hall. Curtis Bickman who is an advisory member of the committee stat- ed that this did not work well as the students received little or no privacy. Bickman also stated that the impression he got for the move was that there were "too many people up t.iere" and the stu- dents "were too much of a distraction". Alan Crist, assistant Vice-Chancellor of Enrollment Manage- ment, stated that "the students were not being a problem" and the move was for privacy issues only. Crist stated that the move was so the stu- dents would have a more pri- vate place to meet as on occa- sion students would need to pass through his office to attend their meetings. When told of the most recent meeting be held in a non private area he explained that he was unaware of the problem, but the committee would "need to continue to look for a better location." Currently the academic Actions Committee will try holding their meeting in a room located in the Union. Highlighted by the arrow is the area where the Academic Actions Commit- tee was meeting. Along with this banquet BSU does many other things that sometimes go unrecognized. This particular event deserved some type of recognition, so at the request of Dannie Moore the current BSU president, I decided to write this article. The idea of this banquet is credited to Rufus Manuel, the former BSU president. In the attempt to make the image of Parkside's BSU more appealing and positive this was more than a good idea. The main focus of this ban- quet was just as it states,to cel- ebrate family as a family. Even though this event was spon- sored and held by BSU it was open to all students who attend Parkside. This banquet was a time for students to appreciate those that are important to them, and that have been an influence in their lives in some way. This was a very emotional event for some of us. The stu- dent presentations to their fam- ilies were very sincere and touching. There were also two special presentations to Curtis Bickman and Damian Evans, which are the current advisors of BSU. These two individuals have put and continue to put their hearts into BSUand they strive to see BSU as a positive and beneficial organization to the students at Parkside. Despite the negative image BSU has recently held Mr. Moore has assured us that BSU is on the rise to becom- ing the dynamic organization that it once was. As a dedicated member of this organization I can say a lot for the commitment of our president, and executive board, and the help of com- mittee chairs and the general assembly asweill can see this change taking place. Look forward to seeing BSU do great things and getting the once good name back out there.
