In his remarks, the gov- ernor laid out his plan to cut fundrng for the University of Wisconsin System budget by 4.5%. While 4.5% may not sound substantial, it is a cut of approximately $50 million to a system that has already seen over $50million in budget cuts over the past decade. The governor's budget plan allows lor mcreases in tuition of up to 10%for the 2002-2003 academic year and includes virtually no increases in finan- cial aid programs for current and future students. More- over, it is questionable whether a 10%tuition increase would even make up for this governor's proposed cuts. It is also important to note that tuition has increased approxi- mately $1,000 more than the rate of inflation since 1992. It is my belief that the state • • • Governor McCallum's budget cuts funding for the University of Wisconsin Schools needs to tie any tuition increases with financial aid increases as a matter of policy. Budget cuts not oniy hurt the pocketbooks of students, but also in addition have an adverse effect on the quality of the education offered. Past budget cuts have resulted in reduced funding for technolo- gy, building projects, course offerings, fibrary resources, faculty, academic advising, and academic staff hiring, as well as safety programs. I Conversation With the Chancellor Benjamin Schmidt Co-Edltor-In-ehief C onvocations are a gath- ering for the faculty, staff, and student lead- ers allowing Chancellor John 'Jack' Keating to address everyone, passing along infor- mation and inspiration. Most students never get to hear what Chancellor Keating has to say due to the nature of his job and the demanding sched- ule he keeps, so I offered him the opportunity to reach the students through the inter- view he was kind enough to accept. • On the rarely visited third level Chancellor Keating wel- comed and ushered me into' his cozy office overlooking the Chancellor John' Jack' Keating campus' south side. Empha- sized were the concepts' Tak- ing .the Next Step' and 'Pride in Parkside.' With state bud- get cuts affecting institutions such as Parkside, contribu- tions from everyone in their own niches need to take responsibility said Chancellor . Keating. He added that the - campus' new Provost, Rebecca Martin, was a candidate with an "enormous background and experience" who flgives us a shot right away to move out to a new step on a new horizon." IlLife is too ShOrt" Chancellor Keating also stated that collaboration with other universities "to facilitate exchanging of ideas" along with the enhancement of Park- side's relationship with techni- cal colleges to reach further into the region to take advan- tage of current resources with- out the benefit of additional dollars _is "pretty positive given the economic climate." When asked about the cur- rent state of the campus Chan- cellor Keating said he was "very pleased." Growth in diversity among faculty, staff, and students is "personally gratifying" to Chancellor Keat- ing. He also expressed plea- sure with the school's strong liberal arts base, which gives students "the ability to learn and critically think" when placed in real world situations. As a parting statement of encouragement, the Chancel- lor opined, "Life is too short." How people play the cards they are dealt' is what makes a positive person." Constructive thinking and finding the "rem- edy of a problem" keep people upbeat.
