The class came to the solution that they would do a number of events that would ulti- mately help the Shalom Homeless Shelter. They broke off into multiple groups and went to work organizing and planning for the big events. The goals of Senior Seminar class were focused around a food and clothing drive, a marketing group, a volunteer group, and an end of the year bash group. Tlie food and clothing drive was held on campus for one week and delivered all of the proceeds to the Shalom Ranger. It was the responsibility of this group to get the word out about the Senior Seminar Classes accomplishments. The volunteer group held a day to recruit possible students that were interested in vo l u n t e e ri n g . They also gave a presentation to a freshman univer- sity seminar class on the ben- efits of partaking in the vol- unteer process. Anyone that committed to volunteer at least once within this semes- ter will gain free access to our end of the year bash. The end of the year bash group organized all of the necessary plans to celebrate and collectdonations of food or money for the Shalom Helping out at the Inns Program for the homeless shelter are (left to right): Kirsten Ziarek, Linda Muffler, Kenny Merrit, Jamie Jenjak and Beth Aiello Center. Many of the students took their turn at the table to encourage others to donate for the needy. The group exceeded their goals with the number of boxes of food and clothing that they had intend- ed on collecting. The marketing group was in charge of contactinghome- town newspapers, Racine and Kenosha Journals, and The We all love Lucy By Deborah G. Most know her from the "I Love Lucy" show also starring her husband. Marking its 50th-anruversary, the "I Love Lucy" show aired for a two hour special November II, zooi. "I Love Lucy" went on the air at 9/m on October 15, 1951,an has never been off since. The show was base~ on the CBS radio sh~~ My Favorite Husband With Lucille Ball as the wife. CBS decided to make the show into a television series starrIng Ball. She agreed but onll: under the conditions that Desi Arnaz her real life husband, would play her husband in the series. CBS did not ~ the viewers would find e couple believable. Ball add Arnaz went on tour forvall e- viIlesto prove to them that the couple· would work well together and be believed. The public loved the show and CBS loved the pilot the two produced. Many of the <\rnaz's vaudeville acts were incorporated into the show. Vivian Vance and William Frawley, Ethel and Fred Mertz joined to make the series a four- some. Very fewepisodes do not show one or both of these characters. Ethel is Lucy's best friend as well as her co-conspirator,while Fred and Ricky often discuss the peculiarities of women and their wives. Fred and Ethel play the roles of fictional,TV- type, neighborly friends with a twist of a realisticmarriage. Desi's character, Ricky Ricardo, is a bongo-beating, singing bandleader with a thick Cuban accent. Many of the mishaps on the show are owed to his inaudible dialect. In fact, Lucy was con- fused when Ricky pro- posed toher, wondering if it was a proposal for marriage or a night at the movies. His most used line was "What's amatter which you? You crazy sum-fing?" Fights with Lucy after finding out what mischief she's been up to often led him to yell in his native tongue, which prompt- ed Lucy's, "Stop jabbering at me!!" They also had to book a DJ to enter- tain at the bash. Finally, they designed t-shirts that the Senior Seminar Class will be wearing the day of and at the bash. For all who would like to show support and have a good time feel free to stop by Spades on November 29tll after 7:00 P.M. The cost for this fun-filled night is $4.00 at the door or $2.00with a canned food item. All students that agreed to vol- unteer are granted free entry. You must be 21 years old to enter. As a result of being involved with the homeless, the class has made some noticeable progress in the community. Giving their time has resulted in homeless individuals with- new winter clothes, food for the holidays, and a new outlook on lifeitself. • LucilleBallseemed to many of her friends to be playing the role ofherself. Shewas a sillywoman that often talked "Donald Duck" and made funny faces.Shestud- ied drama with Bette Davis as a classmate. But after a year her acting coach told her she was not talented enough to make it in act- ing. She started in commercials but soon starred in movies and radio leading her into the "I Love Lucy" show. The show aired for six seasons totaling 179 episodes. Each episode started with a plausible situation which would be thrown awry with exaggerated absurdi- ty. Lucy was starched, frozen, stuffed with chocolate,locked in a trunk and pummeled with grapes. The show took off with the public and soon 44 million viewers tuned in to watch and arguing odd couple and their two best friends, a crazy Cuban and his funny-faced wife. Theshow stillairs on TVLand and a listing of episodes can be found on the Internet. No matter what age or interests, "I Love Lucy" can be loved by all. So tape all of them and sit down with a bag of potato chips, a box of chocolate and enjoy a night free of homework and full of laughs.
