Inside the marooned vehicle were Glorianna Daggy, 79, and Rose Bruno, 88. The students, Joseph Donnerbauer and David Place, both Parkside j0l;igers, waded through the chilly water to pull the women out of the car. "I didn't have a choice" said Place. After three trips to get the women, their walkers, and a blanket from the back of the vehicle, the two students wrapped the ladies in the blanket and offered the shirts off their backs to keep the women's feetwarm. The women had been stranded on the flooded bridge for approximately an hour, and claimed they saw three other cars come down to the bridge and turn back. -"I figured any decent person would have came out and helped:' remarked Donnerbauer. "You'd think a person would have some feelings inside." As Donnerbauer comforted the ailing victims, Place ran to dial 911. Fortunately Joseph KickIer and his family were approximately 100 yards away. As you can see from the r.hoto, the staff found time to 'play" after conferences and seminars while in San FranCISco. "I think my favorite part of the trip was getting to ~ee our staff in an 'out of office SItuation" says Design Manager Pete Forchette. "And who could forget Aunt Charlie's, the drag queen show?" That's right, a drag queen show. I had the rare op,Bortunity to compete in the 'Queen for a Night" contest and managed to come in a close second. "I learned- never to' mix drag S1ueenswith Raspberry Stoley said Christine Agaiby, advertising manager. "All you get is a severe hangover and some interesting photos" (look inside for photos from the show). The conference was a unique experience for the staff not only because they were able to learn a great deal of informationabout the newspaper business, but because they had the opportuni ty to learn more about each other. As Place took the garments back to the women to help keep them warm, Fickler and his familyraced their vehicle over to a nearby gas station to dial 911. After Somers rescue squad members arrived on the scene to escort the two ladies to Aurora Healthcare center, the Pickler family offeredthe two heroes a seatin their car to try to warm them up. The two women are home safe today and say they hold the highest respect for the two student heroes that carne to their aid. Newspaper staff creates legacy for journalists Sarah Olsen Co-Editor-in-Chief The staff of The Ranger News returned from the National College Newspaper Convention Sunday, March 25th prepared to toss tradition and custom out the window. Armed with enthusiasm and newly acquired knowledge, the staff is working to transform The Ranger into the true voice of the student body by ushering in a new legacy of journahsm at Parkside. The first order of business to be performed upon returning to Parkside was to shock the reporters at the regular Monday meeting. "1 told the reporters that the newspaper sucks, but we now have the ability to change 'that" says Sarah Olsen, co-editor-inchief. "We did not know how to properly run a newspaper· before, but that is not the case anymore." Staff members are busy sharing the knowledge they learned at the conference and training a team to take over the newspaper next year. Attendants of the regular Monday meetings are taking part in seminars designed to help writers become better journalists. The reporters are learning basic journalism skills such as how to write a better headline and how to get a good interview, with more information on the way. In addition to implementing new training techniques, the staff has been restructured and new positions have been created. The staff is recruiting journalists, investigative reporters, cartoonists, political analysts, design and layout managers, and opinion essayists who are willing to be innovative and take risks. The most obvious change to the newspaper is apparent in the new layout designed by Forchette. "In order to be able to compete with other newspapers, the design needed to become more innovative, daring, original, and fun" says Porchette, who attended several seminars where he was Continued on page 5 .~-~- .......... ByBrenda Dunham One night Christine, Sarah, and I went for dessert at Mel's Diner. Our waiter asked where we were from, and when I responded with "We're from Wisconsin" he laughed and repeated "Wes-KONsin?!" Apparently, we all have accents - ken ya imagen that, eh? Westarted taking notice of our Canadian accents and quickly became the butts of our own jokes. I, however, won the award for "Most Predominant WesKON-sin Accent." Don't ya know that San Francisco doesn't have cows, unless it is a statue in front of Hard Rock Cafe? Just to warn you if you go to San Francisco don't be asking for a Tyme machine. People will think ya're literally nuts. San Franciscans don't have bubblers, they drink from water fountains. They also don't have soda, they drink pop. If'n ya ken remember the lingo you'll be better off than us, and maybe you won't even be laughed at. As ya can imagen its good to be horne were the way I talk doesn't stand out so much. However I'll have to be putting my cote (coat) and boo-uts (boots) back on. The Walking Germ By Dan White b Unfortunately, I ended ul?, emg "the walking germ' because I caught a cold due to the change ill the climate. Although 1was sick for a good portion of the trip I did manage to attend the seminars. I also managed to give a cold to another member of the group and who knows how many other people! I learned many keys to maintaining the funds of the newspaper, successful advertising strategies, and to not blow your nose with hotel Kleenex (it really hurts after too many blows!) Hopefully, the techniques I learned will keep the newspaper healthy - unlike myself! "When in Rome, do as the Romans" By Pete Forchette During the normal school day, it is not uncommon for people to hear me quote a song, poem, or movie. But while in San Francisco, I found myself saying a quote in particular more than any other - "While in Rome, do as the Romans." Now, don't get carried away, as I certainly didn't, I assure you. But one can't help but notice how different things are away from Keno-where (Kenosha). One of the very first things that struck me as odd was the ride from the airport in San Francisco to our hotel downtown. We were graciously escorted by our taxi cab driver, first tluough a red and blue gang war zone, and then past a popular transsexual prostitution comer. Now, you Just can't find those kind of things in your backyard around here .: The next morning I awoke to the hustle and bustle of the city life below me. Hills made of buildings and houses dictated the movements of all the sports cars, buses, and trolleys that crawled along its alleys. The wildlife we encountered along the- way later that week also made me stop and think. The waiter at the Hard Rock Cafe got us all "rowdy," a metallic robot man was passing out candy to strangers for spare change. And who could forget about Aunt Charlie, the eccentric, cross-dressing drag queen? -- So, as you can see I had plenty of reasons for blurting out my quote of quotes during my adventure ill Rome, I mean San Francisco. And in case you were wondering, no, I didn't leave my heart there. The Bitch By Sarah Olsen Sometimes in life we are forced to assume a role that is not our usual disposition. While in San Francisco, I became "The Bitch" of the group - not to my group, just to those who got in my way. The first time my temper was tested was when we arrived in St. Louis for a layover. After a quick bite to eat, we headed to the ticket counter ready to embark on our connecting flight to the golden city. Imagine our surprise when the snippy flight attendant announced, "Your plane already left." Immediately my hand flew to my hip and my inner bitch was unleashed. "What do you mean our plane left? We still have at least one minute before the .plane is supposed to depart!" Needless to say, we are not seasoned travelers and this experience has laught us a valuable lesson regarding time management. After an extended layover, and an impossibly long flight, we finally arrived at the hotel, 6 a.m, Wisconsin time, 4 a.m. San Francisco time. We trudged to the counter, ready to welcome some Holiday Inn hospitality. The gentleman at the counter punched our names into the counter and promptly announced, "We do not have your rooms anymore." Now, I am not normally a horrible person, but our little friend at the counter would swear otherwise. "What do you mean we don't have a room?" I asked, as a deadly caIm settled over the lobby. I'm not sure what happened next, but according to first-hand accounts, my eyes glowed red, my head spun in circles on my neck, and the man at the counter suddenly found two available rooms. Tour Guide Barbie By Christine Agaiby "Rise and shine everybody, we have a busy day ahead of us and we can t just waste the day in bed now, can we?" You may think it's easy_ always being the peppy, energetic one, but maybe you should try waking up four crab-asses used to sleeping in until afternoon class. On the agenda for the first day, we started with breakfast at Ghiradelli Square where I forced scalding posh coffee down their tluoats. I wanted lively group members at the meetings, not sleep)' ones. After the morning conferences we had lunch in Chinatown where I forced them to eat crab rangoons. No one was going to be Jicky about trying new foo on this trip; I didn't care if ther were allergic to shellfish. then quickly ushered them into the trolley headed towards Fisherman's Wharf where we utilized brief photo opportunities. I had something truly special planned for the evening. We sang and danced, mingling with the best of the locals at Aunt Charlie's, a drag queen hot spot. All this and more, packed into one exhausting day. Besides planning every detail of the trip, I was also responsible for translating for the WesKon-sinite, soothing the germ, taming the Roman, and calming the bitch._ As you can see, we truly did succeed in doing it all on this trip and still made it to all our meetings without a problem. I hope you've all enjoyed reading about our wonderful experience and have found the trip 'to be as fascinating as we did. March 8, 2001 Go ahead and spoil yourself with Chaco/at Lynn Garcia Staff Reporter C hoco/at, nominated for Best Picture, takes place in a small French village. Almost everyone in the community is religious and does not allow themselves to enjoy the pleasures of life. The mayor, Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), literally runs the village. The young priest has to have his sermon looked at and approved before he preaches it to the village people. It's almost as if the mayor is God. Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter, Anouk arrive in the village and open a chocolate shop just in time for Lent. They are immediately looked down upon since they do not attend church and are tempting people during such a sacred time. Vianne keeps her chin up and befriends her landlady, Armande Voizen (Judi Dench), who feels as if she is all alone in the world. Armande's daughter will not speak to her or allow her to see her grandson. Vianne tries her best to keep her business afloat. She gives out free sampies and soon the customers return for more. In the meantime some river rats arrive and the mayor tries to run them out of town. Vianne hires Roux to do some handy work around the shop. This doesn't sit well with the Mayor and he comes up with a plan to get rid of Vianne. Comte de Reynaud gets sick of everyone spoiling themselves with chocolate so he writes a sermon telling the village people that Vianne is Satan and that her sweet treat is like the forbidden fruit. Will the community listen and not return to Vianne's shop or will the people continue to indulge in the chocolate? I strongly suggest seeing this film. Itis absolutely fantastic. The performances are superb and the story is thoroughly enjoyable. I hope that the film is recognized and takes at least one Oscar home. Kenosha native, Mark Ruffalo, stars in award-nominated You Can Count on Me Tyrone A. Payton Staff Reporter Kenosha native, Mark Ruffalo, got his first Significant movie recognition in this winter's You Can Count on Me. Viewers might recognize Ruffalo from UPN's "The Beat." He has currently been preoccupied with his recent fame from his portrayal of Terry, a easy come-easy go charmer who visits his older sister to reflect upon his current dead-end life. His sister, Sammy, played by Laura Linney, IS a divorced mother with a son of 8 who is involved with a man who doesn't excite her, Bob, and a new boss she can't stand to work with on any level. Linney; was honored for her portrayal of Sammy this year, as she was norrunated for Best Actress by the Academy of Motion Pictures. The story opens up with the audience being introduced to Sammy and Terry's parents, as they are heading home in the middle of a rainstorm. Then the audience is immediately introduced to Sammy and Terry, as we see them at their parents' funeral from the crash they encountered with a semi that night. The beginning is a little flat to start with, but then the movie fast forwards to the children when they are older and on their own. Terry has been leading a reckless life and decides to rekindle his relationship with his sister, Sammy, and her son, lems with her new boss, played by Matthew Broderick, though. Broderick is in constant disturbance over he authority that Sammy has over him with the workers on her side. It seems as ifthese tow can't agree upon anything, but out of their pent up range must have ignited a spark between them. Soon Sammy is having an affair with her boss, and both her and Terry are back to reliving their old lives when they were wild teens. The rekindling of these siblings brings back their rowdy behavior, but also awakens them to their respective dependence on each other. Payton Staff Reporter Quills is the latest feature starring Geoffrey Rush, in which he pulled off another stellar performance to his prior award-winning act in Shine. As you may recall, Rush was awarded best actor back in 1998 when the controversial subtraction of Leonardo DiCaprio was left off the voting roster. This year he is nominated again -for his portrayal of the Marquis de Sade, the late 18th century, French, pornographic author. The movie features other phenomenal displays of acting by Joaquin Phoenix as the Abbey Cloutier, Kate WirISlet as the laundry wench, Madeline, and Michael Caine as the officer of corrections, Corrder. Caine, who was last year's winner of Best Supporting Actor for Cider House Rules, Wmslet, who was nominated for her 1998 performance ill Titanic, and Phoenix, who IS up for Best Supporting Actor this year for Gladiator, assure the movie of an excellence in quality of acting. The story takes place in late 18th century France under the rule of dictator, Napolean Bonaparte. Rodriguez was hired as a visiting assistant professor and was offered a tenure-track position, which he declined. Rodriguez chose Princeton because, . "it was a great opporturuty to work with some of the leading academics in [his] field and teach in the broad area of southwestern United States history." In addition to teaching classes, he plans to do research in the area of social movements and civil rights in both the southwest and among Mexican Americans on the Midwestern frontier. Jerry Greenfield, chair of the History department, said "I was happy for him - Princeton is one of the finest universities in the nation, so it was a great opportunity for Professor Rodriguez." Parkside interviewed Rodriguez in September 2000, and he joined the University in January 2001. He was hired to focus on the United States civil rights history and on the Mexican American history component in particular. The history department is currently looking for a replacement to fill the position left vacant by Rodriguez. "We returned to the search after Professor Rodriguez let us know that he had the Princeton offer. The search committee already has had candidates [and] ... We hope to have a positive response within a few weeks"said Greenfield. Rodriguez is a Mexican American who was born in Wisconsin, and settled in southeastern Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor's degree in History. He received both his Master and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University. Well, not fat, not really. That is to say, I'm not obese. "You're not fat!" he asserts, with a tone warning that he does not want to hear me run down the usual list of fatty assets. His anger is the typical response to my whining; it is typical of all men who hear a woman make this famous assertion. The answer is formulaic and expected. So, why do women say it if we know they are going to answer with the prescribed reply? Iam not attempting to make myself the center of attention, and Iam definitely not fishing for compliments. I am well aware that anyone skilled in basic manners is not going to tell me I'm fat to my face, even if they think I really am. It is not to fulfill my ego. I do not want you to tell me that I am skinny, nor do.I want you to tell me that I am perfect, because I'm not. Ibelieve that many men think a compliment is the motive behind our claim, that our egos are so pitiful they need to be stroked at least once an hour. I can not defend all women, but I can assure you that my ego is not as needy and pathetic as to actually announce to any person that I am grossly fat, in hopes of a reflexive compliment in return. Perhaps, as you read this, you are rolling your eyes, wondering at the audacity of someone who would complain about something so seerrungly trivial in comparison to a larger social issue such as world hunger. Let me assure you that this is not trivial to me or to most other typical women. I am constantly submerged in thin ima~es, slogans are sublimated With attacks on my selfesteem, and the forced competition to look better than the next woman is fierce. A large part of my life has been consumed with this incessant worry; in fact, a large portion of my day is devoted to mentally berating myself for my numerous bodily flaws. The path to finding the truth about why Ibelieve Iam fat is a difficult and treacherous one. It is wrought by media representations, distorted by self-perception, and clouded with painful memories. It seems an insurmountable task to explicate the pain that is invisible to society, the double-standard that is acceptable in everyday media, and the shame that is a constant source of confusion to me. You may not understand the pressure that a woman feels continuously harassing her throughout a typical day. As a woman, I am taught to be uneasy about my appearance. On any given_ morning, I wake up to hear an announcer on the radio touting the newest product on the diet market a miracle weight· loss pill. He explains the logic for using the miracle diet (thinner thighs, a flat, firm, stomach, a shapelier butt) and finishes with an acute observation - "If your diet hasn't worked for you yet, what makes you think it ever will?" The television is on as my usual morning routine is rehearsed. Cover Girl reminds me, the target audience, to use their concealer if Iwant to be an "ea.sy,,, h,reezy, beautiful cover girl, L oreal encourages me to beautify "Because I'm worth .it," and Maybelline whispers if Iwasn't born with it, at least they can help . ("Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline"). My breakfast is a healthy and nutritional shake, courtesy of Slim-Fast. While I thumb through a woman's magazine, an article leaps out of the page encouraging me to accept my body the way it is. Opposite the article is an ad picturing an impossibly skinny woman and a gorgeous man staring lovingly down at her. All this is bother me. Why indeed? Inthe grand scheme of the universe, my body weight is not important. It will not land me a good job, provide me with lots of money, or secure my personal _happiness - or will it? In my experience, beauty and figure are many times the inducement for all these things. Are women valuable to the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition because they have a charming personality and a sharp sense of wit? Does the "fat girl" you personally know have dates every weekend and men who value her intellect over her appearance? How many times have you overheard a male telling his friends he would never go out with a certain girl because IIshe exceeds his maximum weight limit?" Vanity, however, suggests a certain satisfaction with one's appearance, the belief that perfection has been achieved. r could not be any farther away from this in my mind. It is the rare occasion when Ihave looked in the mirror and have not had a ready insult na~ging at the edge of my conscience. If my claim is not for vanity, for a compliment, or for an expected answer, then it is for two entirely different purposes. On the most basic level, itis a weak plea for understanding, for empathy in its simplest form. Iwant someone to relate to my self-loathing, a person who knows what it is like to be unhappy with the reflection in the mirror. If you simply answer with "You're not fat," then Iknow you don't understand. Ask me to explain myself, let me sniffle on your shoulder as I explain my deficiencies, or tell me that you understand what it is like not to live up to a certain image. Explain to me that you know why I think I'm fat but that you don't agree. Secondly, I am pleading with you to stop buying into the mediated images of feminine perfection. I need you to realize that although the skinniest model may be attractive, so is the healthiest of "real" women. Allow yourself to appreciate the feminine body in it.s various forms, not just the Image that is repeated in every commercial, ad, and music video. Tell the woman in your life that you think she is beautiful to you, not because she has the thinnest, longest legs, not because her butt can fit in the palm of your hand, and not because her six-pack rivals that of your own. The second purpose was to give undergraduates students the opportunity to work on projects with the ITPC business partners. This lab was a joint project between the University and Snap-On Tools, SC Johnson Wax and Harley Davidson. The idea originated from Cory Mason, an alumni of Parkside, who is director of Information Services at Harley Division. Dirk Baldwin, Associate Professor of Information Systems, says, "I think the ITPC Jab is an important symbol of a strong partnership between Harley Division, Johnson Wax, Snap-on, and UW-Parkside. The relationship allows students to work with professors and IS professionals to develop problem solving, leadership, teamwork and design skills." He also went on to say, "The relationship also allows the students to use some of the latest equipment used in industry. I think it is an exciting opportunity for UW-Parkside that distinguishes us from many other universities. " When asked about the success of the lab, Professor Baldwin said, "I think this lab is very successful, but we are just starting." He also indicated that the long-term overall success of the lab is based on short-term goals, such as each individual project and semester, and long-term goals. "However, we have project goals each year and sub-goals each semester. At least along some dimensions we canmeasure our success by comparing progress to our project goals. On a longer-term basis, we will measure success through our relationships with the partners, the number of MIS and computer science students using the lab, the number of new MIS and computer science students in the program, and the placement of March 8, 2001 our students in full time jobs." This lab is different from a standard lab due to the fact it is only used, for special projects and contains software that is not available in other labs, such as Visual Studio, Oracle and Business Objects. Secondly, it is set up in more of a conference format so that students can work on projects ill teams. The main emphasis is partnership. For example, students enrolled in the Database Management Systems class can use the lab for extra credit projects. .
