The new fieldhouse, class- rooms, dance studio, and fitness facilities-financed in part with student fees-are now open. The formalgrand opening takes place Friday,Sept. 29. "Thisis a very active facility, espe- cially in the winter months," said UW-Parkside Athletic Director Lenny Klaver. "Thebuilding was in use from 5:30 in the morning until after midnight, closeto 1a.m. some- times. We had runners coming in during the morning, classes throughout the day, winter sports practices during the day and evening, intramural sports in the evening. For example, baseball and softball practice times were usually at 9 or 9:30at night. So the schedule is packed." Built For Students Although UW-Parkside athletic teams will benefit from the expan- sion, the primary focus of the new Petretti Fieldhouse will be individ- ual students. An inside look at the Perretti Fieldhouse "The building was built with stu- dents in mind-not how well our track teams run in there or how much space we're going to have for basketball or volleyball camps," Klaver stated. "It's for students; to expand their recreational opportuni- ties. Wewant to keep people on cam- JUS, gIve them more activities, and create a better balance between a healthy lifestyle, studying, and fun activities that are part of the college experience. " To help students build that healthy 'ifestyle, the Petretti Fieldhouse fea- tures 70,000 square feet of open recreation space.
