The $lI.9million needed to successfully complete the athletic center will come from Parkside students' tuition. Eight dollars each semester for twenty years will fund the ath- letic project. Along with Thompson, several legisla- ,tors attended the event, including: Democratic Senator RObert~W~i~rich~';;;'---'_l Sexual violence is a phenomenon that affects men, women, and children, but majority of victims are female. The national- ly accepted statistics for the United States are that 1 in 3 women will be raped in her life- time. It is difficult to know how many people are victims of sexual assault because it is the most underreported crime in the us: only 5 to 20 percent of the crimes are reported to officials. Seventy-eight percent of rapes committed are done by someone the victim knows. The United States has the highest rate of sexual assault in the world, and the rate of sexual assault is increasing 4 times faster than any other crime rates in the nation. Although UW-Parkside has the luxury of being a very low crime area, the number of cases that go unreported have the potential to exist. If you are a victim of sexual assault there is help out there for you. Can someone for help such as a rape crisis hotline (in Kenosha 652-4333), the police, a friend, or family member. Back the Night." It is an event that started m Germany over 20 years ago to protest a series of sexual assaults against women. ~he event has taken off worldwide, and a parncu- lar interest in the event is occuring across American college campuses. Rallies, speeches, marches, an open microphone for victims and w~t~esses to tell their stories, and candlelight vigils are all part of "Take Back the Night." The "Take Back the Night" rally occurs once every semester on the Uw-Parkside campus, but there are people working towards justice every day. The MAVERAKS (Men Against Violence Educating Racine And Kenosha Students) is a campus organi- zation that focuses on men's issues and working with young men at local schools to confront sexual violence.
