OlivelHarvey Community College in Chicago, Illinois offered him a position as Dean of Student Services, DIrector of Athletics, and Director of Latino Services, among other titles. Mr. Brown came to UWP in 1988 to work as the director of the Educational Opportunities Center. It closed its doors in 1989 and he was offered the position as director of OMSA. 1988 is the same year that the UW System started the Design for Diversity plan. The D4D was a IO-year plan to hire more minority faculty and staff, retain and recruit minority stu- dents, and provide an atmosphere that promotes diversity. When OMSA nearly closed its doors three years ago due to lack of funding from UWP, he helped in the fight to keep it open. It worked. According to Anthony Brown, he applied for the posi- tion in Chicago because Parkside did not give him opportuni- ties for advancement. He applied for other positions, requested more responsibilities, but they did not give him the opportuni- ty to show them what he could do. He said others who were kless qualified and less educated were offered the positions, _ and he was not. Mr. Brown said his position at OlivelHarvey Community College was "Just what I wanted this whole time." Anthony has a message for those on campus, "I hope I made a. difference to my students and my colleagues. I hope I made a positive impact on their lives. I will miss the personal relation- ships I made with faculty, staff and students. I had friends who knew the mission and the controversy that comes with the peo- ple who deal with the issues." Out of the 250 or so faculty and staff members, three are African-American and zero Latinos. In 1995, there were thirty-one African-American faculty and staff members. Corey Mandley, president of the Black Student Union, said that we need more role models because UWP has the highest percent- age of minority enrollment. We've lost 62-63% of minority professors, while minority enrollment has gone uo 15-19%. Laurin Clausen, president of Latino Unidos, said that we can. not retain minority faculty and staff because of the lack of administrative support. All students, minority and non-minority, have lost another role model when Anthony Brown left. However, the college in Chicago gained a great mentor. The Interim Director of OMSA is now Deanna Ding, who is also the Coordinator of Programs and an Adviser.
