The USDA grant, effective October 1, will support the study of Biological Sciences Professor M. Scoll Thompson through 1999. During an initial $50,000 grant period covering the past two years, Thompson and student assistants have searched for the reason Why matmg pairs of the same species of the pest tribolium castaneum -the commonflour beetle- from different parts of the world are genetically incompatible. The continuing project is being done in the interest of furthering basic science, Thompson said, but it may benefit pest control or turn up valuable information for animal or human medicine. "Maybe we can manage the natural population to encourage incompatibility and keep the population down without using pesticides," Thompson theorized. "The more you find out, the more options you have to control them. Much of the genetic information we discover in i~sects subsequently contributes to understanding human genetics." Thompson, a member of the UW- Parks ide department of Biorogical Sciences for five years, has a doctorate degree in entomology from North Carolina State University. Six UWP stu- dents have been research assistants on this project. Art Club featured in KAA Exhibition Scott Sheriff The Kenosha Area Artists are hold- ing a juried show until November 22 at the Rhodes Opera House in Kenosha. The show, which opened November 7, was entitled "College Collage" and dis- played ten University of Wisconsin Parks ide Art Club Members. Art Students were encouraged to enter into the exhibit. They did not have to pay an entry fee, and they are able to sell their work. The members that participated in the event were: Michelle LaCount, Connie Wolfe, Theresa Bloede, Hohn Bergeron, Gregg Ludwig, Mary Carnbio, MaryAnn Logic, Dorothy Reuter, Patricia Scofield and Brigdete Bowitz. Cash prizes and ribons were awarded to Wolfe for Best of Show, Scofield for 1st place, Logic for 2nd place and Ludwig for 3rd place. "It was a good way for art students to get into a show other than the student art show," stated award winning Wolfe. UWP-Art Club members in nice threads at the opening! PSGA holds the Parks ide Student Government Association's general assembly meetings on Fridays at noon in room CART 129. This week six new . Senators were elected, a Pro-Tempore was elected. and an announcement about a Rally sponsored by the Black Student Union and Latinos Unidos. Senators elected for the fall term are Biesha Struthers and Jason Stein. Spring term Senators are Heidi Henley, Yolonda Green, DeShon Jackson and David Miller. Senators are student representi- tives. If you have a problem, e-mail. phone, or stop them in the ball. They are at PSGA for all students. Melanie Nevala and Chris Leipski were running for the Pro-Tempore posi- tion. Melanie won 8-4. The Pro-Tempore has a lot of duties, but the basic ones are organizing the Senate, is still a Senator and takes the place of any Senator who cannot perform bis or her duties.
