In the mean time, we ask that when the fire alarm sounds, that you treat the alarm as an actual fire and evacuate the building immediately. Open message to students living on campus regarding false fire alarms Campus blood drive November 24 Scott Sheriff Student Health and Counseling Center and the Molecular Biology Club are sponsoring a blood drive on Monday, November 24, 1997. The drive will be held in Union 104-106 from 9:00am until 1:30pm. Only 4% of the eligible population donates blood. Last year, only 39 people from the entire UW-Parkside campus donated. Your donation is needed and could save a life. Every three minutes, a hospital patient in our area will need a blood transfusion. On average, 585 pints of whole blood and blood components are transfused to patients in our area every day of the year. Blood is composed of trillions of tiny cells suspended in a yellow fluid called plasma. The red cells carry oxy- gen from the lungs to all parts of the body, white cells help combat disease and infections, and the platelets help to stop bleeding when injury occurs. After blood is donated, it can be separated into three components - that means that three peo- Ie could benefit from your donation. ~ d cells are used for surgical procedures a:d treating people with anemia. The plasma helps patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. And the platelets can be used for open-heart surgery, and for cancer and leukemia patients on chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Giving blood poses no risk to the donor. The average adult has 10-12 pints of blood, so one pint will not be missed. After donating, you will feel fine. You can resume your normal rou- tine but should avoid strenuous exercise for 4-6 hours. The needle that is used is brand new, sterile, and disposable. There is NO chance of gelling AIDS by donating blood. To be a blood donor, you need to be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Also, you need to have not ever had hepatitis nor have had any of . the risk factors or behaviors associated with AIDS. On the day of the donation you should be free of major cold, flu, and allergy symptoms. All blood types are needed. So, please, if you are eligible, consider. donating blood on November 24. Objective: "The PSGA shall be responsible to the students of UW-Parkside. The PSGA will be proactive and reactive on issues that have a potential impact on students at UW-Parkside. The PSGA shall have the power to enforce and protect the following articles [as stated in the PSGA constitution] by passing motions, resolu- tions, or taking legal action to insure that no student's rights are violated." PSGA holds the Parks ide Student Government Association's general assembly meetings on Fridays at noon in room CART 129. This week's topics included the HUD grant, more about stu- dent advising, and Justice and Senate seats that are open. The HUD grant was awarded to UWP to help improve Kenosha and Racine communities by way of volun- teers from faculty, staff and students over the next three years. This project is called the Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC). Organizations on campus are encouraged to make this a team effort to improve communities surrounding Parkside. They share an office with the Teaching Center located at WYLL 107B, next to the Advising Center. Ideas and suggestions are strongly encouraged for new ideas. Stop by their office for more informa- tion. Teri Jacobson and Stephen McLaughlin shared news from the Advising Meeting. Some questions they want students to answer are regarding Student Orientation classes. Should there be separate advising/registration/orienta- tion segments or should it be all together as one? Would it be easier for freshman to be sent the University catalogs and Course Schedules a few weeks prior to Orientation, so they have a chance to look at it before jumping right into everything at once? Student's input is essential for this decision. Please take the time to talk to or e-mail your Senators. There are Justice seats open. A Justice is the "Watchdog" group of the Senate. They make sure PSGA is follow- ing the rules. There also six Senate seats open to any student at UW-Parkside who is interested. Pro-Tempore is still open, the candidates for that seat are Chris Leipski and Melanie Nevala. The United Council will be at the meeting on November 21. They are UW system student representatives.
