The field house will include four basketball courts inside a six lane track. The new facility is hoped to "expand student recreation," the head of the Physical Education Center, Lenny Klaver said. He hopes to "have a first class facility" and the is a "good possi- bility in increasing intramural offerings." Alumni Association The Alumni Association is little known to students until after they gradu- ate. Sara J. Walker is the president of this Association and is dedicated to the goals the Alumni have for this year. Sara said the main goal this year is,''Focusing on the current students." She went on, "To become more student-oriented, we appreciate input from current students ....If their clubs or organizations would like to invite the Alumni Association to speak on campus or at their clubs, for any event, we are avail- able for that also." , Sara continued, "There's an interest in the Alumni Association to help alums with finding work.There are alumni who are willing to help graduat- ing seniors ....Most alumni are flattered when you talk to them about how to ini- tiate a job search, what the job market is like, and what jobs are in [the student's] field of interest." The $11 million dollar pro- ject was expected to be done in two phases. Splitting the phase would enable the University to provide funds easier but would also take longer to see the results. The addition now will be done in one phase because the funding is available and is hoped to be added in about two years. The addition will include a larger locker room to provide locker rentals, a new aerobic super cir- cuit doubled in size, a larger weight room, a dance studio, three new class- rooms, an athletic training room, and a new issue and equipment room. B~fore studenis graduate is also a good time to contactthe Association for initiating ajob search or finding out about the job market. Alumni have "Real World Experience," and they can give students answers to questions and let them know who, what, when, where, why and how. Jacobson, who is president of PSGA, and Muhannad Hamdan, who graduated last semester and was the Interim Multi- Cultural Coordinator. Muhannad said that he did not even know they existed until after he graduated and the Association had contacted him. That is why the Alumni Association is putting their focus on students this year. If UW-Parkside is where your heart is, but you w ill not be graduating because of a transfer, contact the Alumni Association and tell them you are inter- ested in receiving information. They are hoping to get sugges- tions on how the Alumni Association can be of service to all students. Alcohol Awareness Week Time to check-in News October 2, 1997·page 2 PSGACorner This week's meeting included the new Director of Union and Student Activities' ideas to make the Union Bazaar and Union Square more exciting for students, the moving of a club to a new area, a newly appointed secretary for PSGA, nominees to fill the three sen- ate seats that are open, and the State of Wisconsin's budget that includes the expansion of the"Physical Education building. Upon completing roll call, the Student Government opened the floor to _JoAnne Yantis, new activities director. She announced that she is committed to making the Union area more appealing for students and guests, including extending the hours of the Union Square on the weekends. She welcomes sugges- tions and thoughts about what we have now and what students envision for the future of UW-Parkside. Since the univer- sity is found on acres of trees and wildlife, making a "Rainforest Cafe" was one of her ideas, which would bring a unique attraction to the Union. Students are encouraged to bring various ideas to the attention of JoAnne Yantis, in room Union 209. Steve McLaughlin, PSGA advi- sor, announced that the Wisconsin Senate approved the State's budget and the gov- ernor will sign it around October l. The budget includes UW-Parkside's plans for the Physical Education building expan- sion and raising tuition again according to the "Tuition-Flex" plan, which col- lects additional revenues for faculty and staff. A room has been found for WPRS radio station. Toward the end of the semester they will be moved into the room where PAW (Parkside Area Wargamers) is now found. Donace Hundley has been appointed as the new secretary, she is a transfer student from Cleveland State University and this is her first semester at UW-Parkside. She once served as a secretary in the Coast Guard, and is a computer science major who is experi- enced in Web Site design. Corey Mandley said that the United Council's meeting, that was held on campus last week, had an excellent turnout. The next UC meeting is in Superior, Wisconsin. Nominations for the three spring seats were stiIIopen. A senator is the only one who can nominate a candi- date for another senate seat. They nomi- nated nine candidates, and each of those nine gave a short speech on why they are qualified for the position. After the sena- tors voted on those nine nominated, Chris Leitski and Luis Benevoglienti filled two of the seats, and a three-way tie was between Carnelius Russel, Coleen Tartaglia and Brandy Pinson. The tie will be decided on Friday, October 10,1997. Parkside Adult Student Alliance PASA meets on Monday, October 13, at noon in Molinaro D127. Meetings are every other Monday. Come see what we can do for you!!! The Peer Health Educators are sponsoring Alcohol Awareness Week October 6 - 10, including a dance on Thursday the 9th in the Union Square. Take a chance and evaluate yourself, be open-minded. Have you looked in the mirror lately? Have you looked at your behaviors? Five weeks into school we've met new people, gone new places and done new things. Usually by the sixth week in school drinking patterns are established, especially among college freshmen. Those new people and new things may have become the same old people doing the same old things. Thinking about drinking and acting responsibly is a chore at times, but it's something we need to think about. Besides the obvious things alco- hol can affect -- such as school, sex and friendships -- behavior and our future are characteristics we can alter with abuse. If you cannot evaluate yourself, or do not want to, maybe you should think about what you use and why. Often times we create our own problems, but there are healthy solutions. Miller, Budweiser, Busch and other alcoholic beverages are only an escape. If you have any questions regarding alcohol/drug abuse, the Peer Health Educators will have a table set up in the Main Place October 6 - 10 for AAW. Besides the dance, the table will offer a chance to try out Fatal Vision goggles, simulating a drunken vision.
