A random sexual assault recent-
ly occurred at Carthage College.
The female Carthage student was
in an isolated music room in the
Johnson Art Center on February
10,
when a suspect turned out
the
lights to the practice room, placed
a
hat over her face and attacked
her.
The suspect is a 25-30 year old
white male with short, strawberry
blond
hair and a light 5 o'clock
shadow. He is an unknown man
approximately
6
feet tall with a
muscular, "football
like build."
He was wearing a dark brown,
waist length leather bomber coat
and black suede or leather gloves.
According
to Detective
Kristine
Block of the Kenosha Police
In the wake of the Chancellor's
statement regarding harassment,
the Ranger News spoke with
Charlotte Westerhaus, the assistant
to the Chancellor for Equity and
Diversity.
As stated in the Feb.
13
issue of the Ranger News, stu-
dents, faculty and staff who feel
they are victims of sexual harass-
ment, or any other form of harass-
ment, should contact the
Affirmative
Action office at ext
2369 or visit Wyllie Hall 340.
Asked who the typical victim is,
Westerhaus said that there are no
typical victims.
Anybody who
feels that he/she is harassed or dis-
criminated
against based on race,
religion, gender
or
other differ-
ences is a victim of harassment.
There is no typical form of harass-
ment experienced on campus.
There
are incidents that
range
from the most
subtle to the most overt, and most are
~ either sexual
or
racist in nature.
Every incident
that
occurs
on campus
differs in some respects, but all can
tarnish personal feelings of equity and
human dignity. Victims should get
suggestions and learn how to deal
with
the
various forms of harassment.
A majority of incidents occur when
the offending individual feels that
he/she won't get caught. These are
often the worst and most isolated of
the incidents. Other incidents occur
in more public forms, though most
take
place in private. or when there
are
no witnesses. The most difficult
cases occur when
the
perpetratortries
to stay anonymous, such as in
the
act
of passing anonymous letters.
Victims are more likely to feel
empowered and to report incidents if
they helieve
these
reports are taken

STAFF REPORTER
Gras, the French festival that hegan in
New Orleans in
J
857. Mardi Gras is
Fat Tuesday, a day in which it is per-
missible to eat large quantities of any-
thing and everything.
Teams composed of either a group
of friends or an organized student
club compete for points in daily
events. At the end of the week, prize
money goes into their private account.
A parade through the concourse
area, beginning at the LI level of the
Union and ending at Main Place, will
serve as announcement of the win-
ners. "At that point we'U announce
the winner for the week-long compe-
tition. By the end of the week it's
whatever club has accumulated
the
most points," said Heather Flohr,
Winter Carnival chair.
The carnival kicked off on Monday
with popcorn, cotton candy, and free
carnival games. A Pie Toss gave stu-
dents the opportunity to ridicule their
professors and other'students,
A scavenger hunt took place on
Tuesday, and then on Wednesday
competition events took place.
Thursday's events are a
"Family
Feud" show at noon and a "Comedy
Sportz" show at 8
p.m,
Both events
will he in the Union Square. Flohr,
who also serves as vice president of
Student Organizations Council
(SOC), explained that the ''Comedy
Spartz"
show is an improv comedy
group.
Also, each team may paint a win-
dow panel on the Union bridge "and
relate it to their team or club,"
explained Lundskow. That panel is
"also an event.
And even though the winners of
this year's carnival have not even
been announced yet, Lundskow
encourages students who enjoy the
carnival to help plan
it
for next year.
A group of students form the Winter
Carnival committee each year and
help spearhead the events.
To most people a carnival means a
carousel, games, and cotton candy.
With the exception of the carousel,
University of Wisconsin-Parkside
stu-
dents can attend an indoor carnival,
called the Winter Carnival, on earn-
pus this week.
A week-long carnival with wacky,
spirited, team events might he just
what UW-Parkside students need in
the middle of the semester.
"Winter Carnival is really just to
have fun doing some fun things.
When it's wintertime and it's cold
we're all down," said Amber
Lundskow, student activities program
coordinator.
The tradition of having a week-
long carnival during spring semester
began in the 1980's. It is always held
at the end of February.
