Students at the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide had the opportunityto make their voices .heard in a Presidential Pre- Election held on Oct. 23 in the Universitybookstore. The bookstore was open .during regular business hours Oct.- 23 and students had the opportunity to vote at anytime dur ing the day. Election results will 'be made available to the media and posted in the University bookstore before Oct. 3 I. Results will include a listing of how students at UW-Parkside voted, along with national results from the 500 other colleges and universities that participated in the voting. The Pre-Election was designed to create interest in the Presidential Election that will take place on Nov. 6, as well as the campaign issues that sur- round it. The Pre-Election was also designed as a reminder to UW-Parkside students of the importance of getting out their vote. The campaign was sponsored by Follett College Stores. Follett, an Elmhurst, 111.based company, operates more than 500 other Follett stores in 45 states that participated in the Presidential Pre-Election. ESTABLISHED 1972 Contest aimed to increase athletic atten- dance;"flip the bill" for tuition costs BY MARK HAHN NEWS EDITOR Students now have a chance to take time out to attend sport- ing events while at the same time covering their tuition costs in a new contest offered this year at the University of Wisconsin- Parks ide. Each time a student attends a home volleyball match, basket- ball game, or wrestling dual meet this year at UW-Parkside, they can sign their name at the desig- nated place and time and enter themselves into a drawing to be held at the last home basketball game of the season. The contest provides a way for students to get their tuition at the in-state rate paid for next fall, or get reimbursed for the tuition students pay second semester if they graduate at the end of the academic year. Student fees are not included. "We're trying to do something positive to provide more oppor- tunities to get students involved with campus events," explained Dr. Lenny Klaver, director of athletics. "UW-Parkside is pri- marily a commuter school and it's harder to get students who don't live on campus to get involved. This could be a way to get people to come to athletic events who might otherwise not come." Klaver also said that poor atten- dance at sporting events such as men's basketball games can have a negative impact on the perfor- mance of athletic teams. "It can be a dismal to student athletes performing when there is nobody watching in the stands;' explained Klaver. "This could be a way to develop enthusiasm as well as give students some incen- tive to get involved." Klaver commented that a lot of students at the University may not be aware of what level of competition UW-Parkside's ath-, letic teams play at in their respective conference. "In basketball, the Great Lakes Valley Conference is outstand- ing," said Klaver. "The confer- ence is recognized very highly in NCAA Division II Basketball." Each time a student attends an athletic event at UW..Parkside and signs up for the contest, they increase their chances of win- ning. Students can sign their names on a slip of paper handed out at the beginning of the event when they show their valid UW- Parkside IDs, and students can put the slip into the designated box that is available on their way out after the event. Students are allowed only one entry per night, and only current UW-Parkside students are eligi- ble to enter.
