Gary Grace, sssistant chancellor
of student affairs, said better job

for part of the current enrollment

UW-Parkside.
If approved, the
plans then go to the state legisla-
ture for funding ideas.
The second phase consists of
adding' on a new fieldhouse. The
new
fieldhouse
would
cover
58,504 square feet, and would
house an indoor track.
The sur-
face would be very similar to the
synthetic
surface
recently
removed from the existing gym.
The new gym would be used for

sports.
Currently, the outdoor sports,
such as baseball,
softball, and
soccer, are having trouble finding

this problem,
and would give
ample
space
to all the sport
teams.
"This would be a huge benefit
to our outdoor teams," said Draft.
The indoor sports, like bas-
ketball, and volleyball would also
be able to use the new facility.
However,
they will still play

Physical
Education
Building
expansion project are expected to
be set in motion early this spring,
with several other key dates set.
Ground breaking ceremonies
are expected
in mid March of
1997, and completion of the first
phase is expected by August of
1998, according to Linda Draft,
Associate
Athletic
Director
at
UW-Parkside.
"We are one more year behind
schedule than where we would
like to be," said Draft.
The first phase of the project
includes remodeling of the first
floor to provide additional locker
room space, a new training room,
weight
room,
and
equipment
issue room. The second floor
will also have work done on it.
This includes an additional class-
room,
office
space,
and
a
dance/aerobics studio.
Before any of this can happen
though, some details still need to
be worked out.
In January of
1997, plans will be released for
bids
to
the
contractors.
Approximately
one
month-
later,
the bids will be awarded for con-
struction, and then the building
can begin.
The ground breaking ceremony
is not the only big event happen-
ing in March.
The Wisconsin
Building Commission will again
meet in the spring, and either
approve or disapprove plans for
Enrollment at the University of
Wisconsin-Parkside is down 6.5
percent, and is expected to cause
a $780,000 shortfall
in revenue
from tuition.
UW-Parkside's total enrollment
for the 1996 fall semester
is
4,538, down from 4,851 in 1995.
The University missed its full-
time-equivalent
enrollment target
by
340 students. This figure is
nearly 10 percent below the pro-
jected target.
The University is currently tak-
ing steps in anticipation
of the
,
projected deficit. Early corrective
steps include:
• Leaving some staff vacan-
eies unfilled.
• Using part-time professors
to teach classes where faculty
members have left.
• Eliminating
or
cutting
spending for some supplies and
equipment.
