The Ranger Softball team swept their first six games of the season at the Kennesaw State Classic Tournament, which included a 2-0 upset of Kennesaw State, the nation's number one team in NCAA Division n. UWP's Wendy Wolff (3-0) carried a no-hitter against Kennesaw into the final inning, before giving up a no-out double to pinch hitter Julie Eggert. The Kapla twins, Billi and Bobbi, each drove in a run in the win. "We were real satisfied (after the tournament), but we tried to keep it in per- spective. It's much too early to put a lot of emphasis on one tournament," said Coach Tory Acheson. Parkside, ranked #2 in the nation, also beat the #22 team, Columbus in the tour- ney. Kathy Kilsdonk had a two-out, two-run triple in the 5th to give the Rangers the lead for good. The team's accomplish- ments last weekend were even more impres- sive when you con- sider that all the other teams had started their sea- sons before enter- ing the tourna- ment. Parkside hadn't even prac- ticed outside yet. Acheson couldn't pinpoint an answer for his team's superb play, but said, "I don't know why, but the excitement of finally getting to play offsets the fact that we hadn't practiced outside yet." Wolff's pitching was complemented by Billi Kapla, who went 2-0 with a minuscule 0.47 ERA, and Freshman Kris VanLangevelde, who won her first game. Wolff's ERA is a basement-low 0.67. "The pitching staff did a great job," said Acheson. "It was a step in the right direction." 1995 NCAA II RBI and Home Run Queen, Jackie Aiken also came up big as usual. Aiken hit a team Rangers inAction best .471 in the tournament with three doubles. Junior Jessie Johnson was the other major force, batting .381 with two doubles and a triple. The only real damage to the Rangers, was done to themselves. Three players went down with injuries over the weekend. One was serious. The other two were not, according to Acheson. Parkside won't take over Touch-tone Registration - Mark Hahn Staff Writer Touch-tone registration may become a reality for UW-Parkside students as early as the 1996 fall semes- ter. "We're writing up a draft of a proposal right now, and the plan will be to have it open for a subset of students (to try out) by this November," said Susan Johnson, registrar and chair of the 'Ibuch-tone Registration Committee. Johnson said there has been a growing trend in the UW-System toward using touch-tone registration. Three institutions already implementing this technolo- gy are UW-Madison, UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater. "It will be really nice for students," explained Johnson. "Students will be able to register by phone, check their grades and their account balance. We'll even- tually put some kind of financial aid status in so the number one ranking just yet. The national poll is only taken every two and a half weeks, so the Rangers will have to dominate their two tournaments this week- end in Georgia and Orlando, Florida to move up. The road to the finals won't be easy either. In Georgia, they'll have to face no. 1 Kennesaw State again, who will definitely be geared up for the re-match. However, Acheson is more concerned with how his team finishes in the end of the season at the College World Series. "We have a chance to return to the national tour- nament and the potential to be a national championship contender," Acheson said. "Eventually, we would like to provide information kiosks to help students find out about course availability," said Meachen. "Students could also view their grade reports, transcripts and learn about upcoming events. Any number of pieces of information would be avail- able to students and staff." Meachen said at least two kiosks would be purchased- one to be installed in Main Place and the other in the Student Union. These are high-traffic areas at the uni- versity. system touches the keypad on the telephone to make various choices, the software puts the student's voice pat- terns together in a way that makes sense to the comput- er. The system then responds to corresponding instructions. Voice mail also operates in a similar man- ner. "I think the university is committed to getting this service for students, and it isn't tremendously expen- sive, but it might be time consuming for staff," explained Meachen. "If we can purchase the package this spring and get it installed in the summer, we could do a trial run in the fall for the 1997 spring term. Meachen explained that touch-tone registration involves voice-response soft- ware with a digitizing voice. When a student using the County Public Defender's Office; Kenosha Area Development Corp.; the Kenosha County District Attorney's Office; the Racine and Kenosha County juvenile courts; Walworth County Court; the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office; Racine County Housing Authority; and Kenosha and Racine police departments. The program is open to sophomore, junior, or senior college students who have completed at least six cred- its of political science. Intern positions at local and national government agencies and public service organizations will be avail- able this summer through the University of Wisconsin- Parkside. The Public Service Internship Program (PSIP) provides Parkside students with practical experience in helping with legal services for the poor, assisting court agencies and researching constituent problems for legislators. Students can earn from three to six cred- its in the program. Several new sites have been added and include the Wisconsin Procurement Institute, Milwaukee; Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court, Waukegan, Ill ..; Racine Correctional Institute, and the Milwaukee offices of Russell Feingold, Mark Neumann and Herb Kohl. Other sites are the Racine Guaranteed Degree in FourYears degree could be shaved by cutting requirements for the bachelor's degree to a 120- 128 credit range. Lyall then stated that spe- cialized 140 credit degrees should be advertised as five- year programs. This four year guarantee is not for all students, especially those who only attend school part- time. This constitutes a good number of Parkside's stu- dents. David Stacy, president of United Council, disagrees with Lyall. "We don't think more than 1 to 2 % of the students will be able to take advantage of it," said Stacy. The Board of Regents will meet this Friday in Madison for their monthly meeting to discuss the four year guar- antee program. The 21st Century Committee, admin- istering the four year degree program, will convene in Madison this afternoon. When UW System President Katharine Lyall met recently with Parkside faculty and staff, she stated that the UW System might consider offering students a guarantee that they can fin- ish their degree in four years. Lyall said the Regents Study for the 21st Century is showing the need for a faster time to earn degrees. Students would have to agree to take certain courses so they can fmish a degree in four years. Lyall also said that the time to earn a conference at Parkside . Some of the students will be involved in a panel dis- cussion on "The English Major and the Non- Traditional Student." Parkside has a long history of educating non-traditional students. Convention speakers are Rudolfo Anaya, an award winning New Mexico novel- ist, playwright and scriptwriter; Joy Harjo, Native American poet, scriptwriter, editor, film- maker and musician; and Denise Chavez, New Mexico playwright, actor, poet and fiction writer. Last year's International Sigma Tau Delta convention was held in St. Louis, Mo. • Kristine Hansen News Editor Five of Parkside's English majors are heading south for spring break to attend the International Sigma Tau Delta convention in Albuquerque, N.M. The stu- dents are all members of the local Tau Psi chapter. The theme of this year's convention is "(Transjform- ing Literary Landscapes." Diane Wernke, Tim McGrady, Rochelle Greco, Rebekah Bakke, and Kristine Hansen will be pre- senting papers. Wernke will chair a panel discussion that will discuss how to set up a successful regional confer- ence.
