There is no fee for this class, however a 15 minute appointment prior to the session with Julie Anding is necessary. Space is limited. Only 8 spots remain in the Career Planing Group. For stu- dents unable to schedule the Career Planing Group into their schedules this fall, another session will be offered in the spring. Janette Deni! is trying to give Parkside something it doesn't have: a yearbook. In the 1985-1986 school year two students attempted to start a yearbook staff. However, their proposed budget request was denied by SOC due to a lack offunds. "My job is to see if I can get more people to help out," Deni! explained, adding, "I know it's going to be difficult." Deni! is a transfer student from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, where she was a member of their yearbook staff. Encouraging student input, Deni! has, "open ideas right now" about the yearbook format. She is considering starting with student organizations and campus events and feels that "candids would be a great thing." People interested in photography, writ- ing, computer layout and anybody who wants to learn are encouraged to contact Deni!. She stresses that no experience is necessary, just interest and determination. Deni! can be reached at 595-2803 or by leaving a message with Karla Zahn in the Student Activities office, Union 209. To begin producing a yearbook "we do have a lot of expenses to start out with," Denil said. However, she hopes 1995-1996 will be the year it happens. In the future, Denil is considering sending out surveys for student and faculty suggestions. Modern Meters • Derek Bishop Staff Writer Effective since September 28, twenty new electronic parking meters were installed in the Communication Arts visitor parking area. The meters are designed to make the campus more user friendly for prospective students, by increasing the time limit to 25 cents for 25 minutes and $2 for two hours of safe parking. "The designated people can help by not using this area for parking from 6 a.m.- 9 p.rn. This space will be patrolled and tickets will be issued where needed and cars will possibly be towed", added Police Chief Robert Deane. Bite Out of the BigApple • Kristine Hansen Staff Writer After studying theatre in the classroom, UW-Parkside students will together bite into theatre's core and trav- el to New York City. The class and trip are entitled the New York Professional Theater Seminar. ""Everyone who goes to Florida likes this way better," says Professor Judy Tucker-. Snider, coordinator of the class and trip. In the class, which will meet Mondays from 5:00- 7:30 p.m. beginning February 12 and ending March 25, students will study the history of . Broadway theater. The trip to New York City is the lab portion of the class from March 9 to March 16, during UW- Parkside' spring break. Out of the four plays that will be seen, two have already been chosen. Each year the class sees a comedy, musical, drama, and avant-garde (experimental). This year's musical is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum star- ring Nathan Lane. The score includes "Everybody Oughta Have a Maid" and "Comedy Tonight:" Playright Larry Gelbart also wrote the original M*A*S*H comedy. The drama play, Master Class, stars Zoe Caldwell, a Tony winning Broadway actress. Playwrite Terrence McNally also wrote Love! Valor! Compassionl. Professor Judy Tucker- Snider says Lave! Valor! Compassion! "had me laughing on the floor." In the lab portion of the class, "nothing's scheduled except for the flight and plays," says Heather Schmitz, who has taken the class twice. Students walk or take taxis to the the- aters; the only transporta- tion provided is to and from the airport. Schmitz saw it as an opportunity to learn the landmarks and how to "hop on the subway." "It's a free roaming trip, you make your own agenda," says •Vicky Wateridge Confused about life after graduation? Wondering where the answers to important questions will come from? Will it be grad- uate school or a career? Well, now it is time to get focused on your future. Two meetings will be held by the career center with both sessions conducted by Julie Anding, Career Development Coordinator. The Career Planing Group meets for five weeks start- ing Wednesday, October 25 at noon in Cart 120. The Career Planing Groups are designed to be a starting point to identify and begin to develop possi- ble career options. Students who participate in the session will be working with a workbook. Discussion will cover pos- sible career interests and the importance of skill development. The groups will be discussing the val- ues in the work place from working conditions to real- istic views of goals. A goal planning process and possi- ble plan of action, Volunteer Schmitz. The first year Schmitz went on the trip, she saw Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt. But the biggest thrill was when "we walked onto the set of Love! Valor! Compassion!" and the cast came out and talked to the group. To set foot on a Broadway stage was thrilling after studying the history of Broadway theater at UW-Parkside. There are three options for this class: the 1 credit lecture class and 1 credit lab class for a 2 credit total, the 1 credit lab class only, or the lab and/or class for audit. Taking the New York Professional Theater Seminar for credit can help a G.P.A. The lab fee ranges from $575-$785, depending on room size, and includes: 4 theatre tickets, round trip airfare, round trip ground transportation from LaGuardia Airport to Hotel Edison in NYC, guest speakers (actors/directors/designers) and 7 nights at the central- ly located Hotel Edison. Tucker-Snider urges that "if anyone wants to go, tell them to get on board." .
