The day-long event, entitled "Latinos in the Fine Arts: Mainstreamed and Maintaining our Identities", consisted of a general session which featured guest speaker Tess Arenas, assistant to the president for multicultural affairs of UW- Systems, and two workshops led by lead- ers of the southeastern Wisconsin Latino community. , The objective of the conference accord- ing to Edwardo D. Vargas III, member-at- large, Latinos Unidos, "... it was a won- derful opportunity for the student body to learn about the vast Latino culture in which we all may have a role. Hopefully, this will be an annual or biannual event." Along with keynote speaker Tess Arenas' presentation on Latino poetry were five other presenters. During the morning workshop, there were two teach- ers from Parksille giving two different presentations: Gabriela Cambiasso, Spanish lecturer, on literature and lan- guage in the Hispanic world, and Dr. Francisco Rios, assistant professor of teacher education, on Chicano literature. The third presentation in the morning was more of a hands-on demonstration presented by Alma Gonzales-Radky from the United Community Center in Milwaukee, in which Gonzales-Radky taught students traditional folkloric dance. The afternoon workshops consist- ed of two speakers, both from the United Community Center in Milwaukee: Mark Fraire conducted a workshop on dramatic arts and theater and John Jacquez led a workshop on mariachi music. In general, "it was great educational experience and a good opportunity for the community to get involved with the University," said Jesus Farfan, a member of Latinos Unidos. The conference was attended by stu- dents and staff from Parkside and some Hispanic students from Kenosha's Bradford High School and Racine's Park and Horlick High Schools. Although the participants were very enthusiastic, there was some regret about the low attendance. As the president of Latinos Unidos, Alban Anthony Flores expressed, "This was an opportunity for all ofthe community to learn about Latinos in fine arts. I had hoped the cam- pus community would have attended, but was disappointed in their attendance. This showed lack of support outside Latinos Unidos. Overall, this was a very educational experience." The event was organized by all of the officers and members as a group effort, and was hosted by Latinos Unidos vice- president Jorge Figueroa. Jorge said that much energy was expended and he "would like to thank all the Latinos Unidos mem- bers that helped out with the posters, tickets, and everything else ...[as well as] the BSU members that showed their sup- port." Th wind up the event, there was a dance commemorating "EI Grito de Lares," the Puerto Rican Independence Day with Claudio y su Orquestra playing salsa and merengue music. Nelson Ranger Columnist Baseball fans in Wisconsin may not be singing "Take me out to the ball game" after October 1st.The lease that the Brewers have on County Stadium is over after this particular game. Subsequently, the Brewers will not have a legal obligation to stay in Wisconsin. If they leave, Milwaukee will be only the sec- ond city (after Washington) to losemajor league baseball teams twice. The changing economics (greed?) of baseball has had the Brewers angling for a new play- ground since 1989. A new park PSGA? oTy Wilda Entertainment Editor Given an hour to kill on a Friday and a sick sense of bumor, one might find enjoy- ment in attending a student government meeting. It's kmd of like watching a Comedy Channel presenta- tion of the US Senate pro- ceedings. First, there's the President, Mr. Tom Richie. Elected to the position under questionable circumstances bya large block of votes from the athletic department, his term has thus far been a search for an agenda and a plan. Most recently he has means no mnre money problems, or at least that's what Bud Selig's Brew Crew would have us believe. If the brewers get their new taxpayer-backed toy, they will still be left with the same prob- lems of a small-market team. Only legitimate revenue sharing and labor peace can save base- ball. The game used to have a uni- versal afford ability for everyone. As a boy, $10 would get me down to a Cubs game by train, a decent stay, goodies, back home by train and I still would have change. Has anybody priced a seat lately? No wonder they can't draw an audience or a crowd! Who can afford to go? If the state lawmakers vote to fund a new park, they'll be mak- ing a mistake. If Selig can't make the Brewers profitable, then he should sell it to a Wisconsinite who can. That's the best way to save baseball for Wisconsin. It's irresponsible to make hon- est taxpayers contribute $160 million to a bunch of million- aires. If taxes go up, then put the money where it does some good, like in education. Bud Selig had the class not to tell the citizens of Wisconsin, "My way or the highway." That doesn't mean he needs us to build him a new ball park. I like rocks year. An election is to be held in October, to elect the 9 fall Senate seats. So far, only the timeline for this election has been completed. Petitions for candidacy are supposed to be available Monday, Oct. 9 and due back by Thursday, Oct. 12. The election will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 18 and 19. No plans as of yet have been made for the second round of elec- tions, should this one go as well as last year's. Parkside will also be the site of a United Council meeting in February of 1996. Some confusion over how exactly to accommodate this meeting still exists as the Senate debates keeping the meeting off campus and con- fined to area hotels ("Please don't let them see this place," said one Senator) or using the abundant, avail- able and cheaper resources of this school. At least half of the current crop of politicians face the prospect of a re-election cam- paign in less than a month. Now may be a good time to check out what student gov- ernment is up to. Maybe even decide you can do a bet- ter job. tried to improve the increas- ingly low campus opinion of PSGA by getting govern- ment involved with PAB in sponsoring entertainment on campus. He has given gov- ernment funds to PAB to help bring acts to campus and has been active in pro- moting these events. He and new senate president pro- tempore, Teri Jacobson, have also been busy promoting government and getting the word out on anti-student leg- islation by speaking at the dorms and in classes. His main nemesis in the senate is the 2 issue senator, Tom Belongia. This Tom is most vocal on an anti- Neumann campaign that has involved letters to the Kenosha News, Ranger and EDITORIAL POLICY Ranger News encourages letters to the Editor. His other main concern is to oppose Tom Richie on any matter he can find. It's amazing how much nothing he can find to argue with during a senate meet- ing. It's also a wonder how they can get anything done while debating all these petty details just for the sake of argument. In the senate's version of musical chairs, there seems to be constant vacancies in the ranks of government. Last year, most of the judi- cial branch either graduated or quit, and at least one replacement candidate quit rather than deal with the job of senate baby-sitter that the justices have become. Senate vacancies have occurred due to graduation (Jeff Weniger), loss of eligi- bility (Ami Orava), and dis- gust with the current state of the senate (Anthony Flores, Jimmi Nicholson, Gabe Millerd). Of course, the senate lost no time in replacing these positions as quickly and quietly as possi- ble through their extensive search and screen process of asking who had friends available to take the jobs. In the past two weeks, without much ado or fanfare, new senators Casey Green and Julia K. Beaver were sworn in. Also done in this behind- closed-doors, keep-it-quiet atmosphere was the han- dling of last year's botched PSGA raffle. It turns out that a group complaining of the apathy on campus has a problem dealing with apathy in its own ranks. Only approximately 20% of the tickets necessary to pay for the raffle were sold. Senate first extended the time limit on the raffle last spring, but was still unable to meet the goals of the project. They then let the raffle lapse through the summer in vio- lation of state gaming laws, and yet did not find a way to rectify the situation. The first three meetings of the year had votes concerning the raffle before the floor, as the Senate waffled on the decision between complying with state law and saving their own public image. In the end, the raffle has been canceled and plans to refund ticket money are being drawn up. Uncertainty still remains, however, in exactly how to act.
