Master Singers meet in CARTD-1l8 from 7:00-9:45 on Monday night. Master Singers is open to all members of the commu- nity. Voices of Parkside is the chamber choir. It is a smaller group than the other two. Members must audition. The quality of the Parks ide choirs is what draws Rick Anderson to them. "I wanted to sing beautiful and challeng- ing music with a <;juahty community choir, said Anderson. James B. Kinchen, Jr. is conductor for all three choirs. Roseann Mason • Pamela Bradshaw NewsEditor Roseann Mason describes what she does as tilln~s that "just feel like they re my job." However, those "things" earned Mason the Academic Staff Distinguished Service Award. Mason enjoys making connections between dif- ferent parts of the Parkside and with the community, where "con- nections aren't there nat- urally. " Currently Mason is the coordinator of both the Writing and Tutoring Centers. She has worked to develop the programs so that they would "have some continuity for stu- dents." She feels that the Writing and Tutoring cen- ters playa "middle role between student and teacher." It meant a lot to Mason that the student who nom- inated her for the award was one of the writing assistants in the Writing center. Mason notes that many of the people who come in for assistance at the centers later work there as tutors. Another pro/'ect Mason has been invo ved with is using a grant from the Wisconsm Humanities Council to have Parkside faculty teach classes at the Racine Correctional Institution. "Most of the faculty who were involved were quite impressed and amazed at the interest level and the enthusiasm of the inmates," Mason said. "That connection ... really serves one of the missions of the university, to serve the community." PSG A Needs Justices • Kristine Hansen News Writer Do you have a 2.0 GPA? If you answered yes to all of the above inquires, Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) has a justice job for you. Apply at the Senate office today for a stab at justice. Four positions are available. PSGAneeds Justices available Fridays at noon in CART129. Justices make rulings on the constitu- tionality of Senate actions. Like Washington, Parks ide operates an Executive Branch, a Judicial Branch and a Legislative Branch (Student Senate). "The President of PSGAappoints jus- tices. Then they are approved by the Senate and then by the Chancellor," states Ty Wilda. Wilda was appointed by Tom Richie, PSGAPresident, at the end of last year and is now waiting for the Chancellor's approval. The waiting has caused Wilda to doubt whether be wants tills potential PSGAposition, as he was a Senator for one and a half years. The other appointee, Mike Bovee is waiting for Chancellor approval also. Wendy Paul and Matt Stephan obtained Chancellor approval. Stephan, howev- er, is the only justice, because Paul resigned. "The majority of justices, including Chief Justices, have graduated," In Mason's 090 English class this semester, she is having students use e-mailto write to students at Northeastern Univer- sity in Boston for feedback on their essays. The theme students will be working on is the culture of school. "I think the students might resist it a little ...but .. .I think it will give them a broader sense of our country at least." Nowhere • Barb Churchill Rangercolumnist What is to become of Voyager? The second season has begun after a truncated first season of only 16 episodes, but the show so far leaves me cold. I have taken an informal poll of my friends (die-hard Trekkers), and all agree that serious changes must be made. Part of the problem is that some of the characters' reac- tions are not believable because there has been little character development. Case in point: Harry Kim. In the "pleasure seeker episode," Kim didn't seem to know that an attractive young lady was hitting on him. Now, I'm sorry, but naive or not, most guys wilI notice when a girl is interested, much less actually hitting on them, so this was not credible. Some stories have been copy- ing too many of the original Star Trek episodes. The Voyager ep,isode "Faces," in which B Elanna Torres (chief engi- neer) gets split into her compo- nent human and Klingon parts, reminded me of "The Enemy Within." This was one of the best classic "original" Star Trek shows. In "The Enemy Within," Kirk is split into his component "halves" (good and evil) via transporter accident, and learns through the episode that he needs both halves of himself to survive. Without both halves, Kirk found that he wasn't a "whole" man. In "Faces," Torres learns through the episode that she needs both halves of herself to survive-s-just as Jim Kirk did. This story, while still good, is hardly original. Unfortunately, most of Voyagers shows don't do even this well on the origi- nality scale! Also, I have a real problem with Captain Kathryn Janeway. She seems to have a very incomplete, and at times even schizoid, personality. Most of the time, Janeway fails to pro- ject a commanding presence. Once again, the "pleasure seek- er" episode rears its ugly head. Man, this episode really had its problems! During this episode, Janeway was Far too indecisive with the "pleasure seeker" com- mander, mainly because she seemed attracted to him. Would this have ever happened to Jim Kirk? He would have charmed the "pleasure seeker" comman- der into giving up the technolo- gy! Sometimes, "love 'em and leave 'em" has its advantages. This leaves the decision to forcibly acquire the technology remember, Voyager does want to get home to the Alpha Quadrant in this lifetime to Tuvok, B'Elanna Torres, and Ensign Seska. In other words, they have the initiative that Captain Janeway lacked. When Janeway finds out that they did this, behind her back no less, she dresses down Torres, as any gOOd Captain would. However, her characterization fails when she plaintively wails to Tuvok, "I thought that you were my friend!" I don't know of any captain that would do this, ever I A captain might say instead, . "You're my friend and you do this? What kind of friend are you, anyway? Don't you EVER do' that again, or I'll throw you out' an airlock!" I On Voyager, the producers l wished to prevent the perceived mistakes of Star Trek: Deep . Space Nine, and avoid going for !i "in-depth character studies," ~ opting instead for "action- . adventure." It shows. Please, \~ Voyager, get some character development soon, before it's too' late! Otherwise, only dyed-in- . the-wool Trekkers will continue l r to watch, the ratings will fall, ' and Voyager will never live up Ie to the promise that it has tanta- II lizingly held out. II ~ Video Review Pulp Fiction • Ty Wilda Entertainment Editor Quentin Tarantino's breakthrough film, Pulp Fiction, will be released on home video this week and so it is time to take a look back at what made it such a talked about movie. Pulp Fiction begins and ends with a restaurant rob- bery. Between that there's the performance of a paid killing, a boxer's death a heroin overdose, a homo- sexual gang rape, a sense- less and silly accidental shooting death and the semi-literate philosophical ramblings of John Travolta as Vincent Vega. Not nec- essarily in that order. All this violence and more occurs in a time-shifting plot sequence that camofIages the fact that the film is truly more of an anthology than a full length feature. what Pulp is truly, is a tribute of sorts to the old gangster films of the '40s It is brutally violent and' non-stop. From the ram- bling debates of Jules and Vincent (Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta in capti- vating contrast to each other) to the desperation of the boxer, Butch (Bruce Willis) to the formal effi- ciency of Mr. Wolffe (Harvey Keitel) there is a sense that these characters are caught in a world out of their control and just try- mg to hang on. The world of this movie is an unreal place, driven by coinci- dence and luck, a world where everyone is a bad guy just doing what it takes to get to ,some sort of redemption, Some criticized the movie for its violent content. Yes, it does have a high body count and an air of sense- lessness. But rather than a glorification of violence it is merely a portrayal of it. The humor m the film is black and inappropriate. It u IS nervous laughter and shock. Not the cartoon vio- lence of the standard action flick, but a violence that gets its impact from bemg nasty and unbeliev- able. In the end, Pulp Fiction is film noir for the 90's. A send up of gangster movies, 1970s drug and blaxploitation films and even today's action hero.
