Last season's record of 51-14 wasn't good enough to receive a bid to the National Softball Championships, but this year's 40-11 mark and 18th rank in the national polls did attract the attention of the tournament selection committee. A couple of days of ~ anticipation and nervousness ~ followed the team's season ~ ending sweep of UW- S Whitewater back on May 3. a But on Monday, May 8, the -& waiting game concluded, and :;; ! the Rangers were on their .:::. way to the "big dance." Ostheimer, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at East Tennessee State University, has been named provost/vice chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Chancellor Eleanor 1. Smith offered the Spot to Ostheimer on May 10. His appointment, which IS subject to Board of Regents approval is effective July I. "John brings to UW-Parkside a strong leadership background," SmJlh said. "He is knowledgeable and Committed to promoting a teaching/learning community wherediversily is valued," Ostheimer has been Dean of COllege of Arts and Sciences at East Tennessee State since 1988. Prior to that, he was Dean of the COllege of Liberal Arts and S . cl.e.nces. and a professor of POIHJcal science at the University of C I ' o orado-Denver. He had earlier been a faculty member and department chair at Northern Arizona University. As Dean, Ostheimer oversees 17 departments. He led the strengthening of Bachelor of Science degree requirements, and chaired discussions of faculty promotion, tenure and evaluation guidelines. His teaching areas include American Politics, African politics, political development, comparative politics, and the politics of environment and natural resources. Smith encouraged UW-Parkside's 350 graduates May 14 to discover their own "special level of excellence and achievement" and be ready lO make a difference in a "rapidly changing" world. "History is full of people who had an idea and then applied their resources to make their dream a reality," Smith said. "A writer once said that you don't get ideas ... you smell them out, you track them down, wrestle them, pursue them and then implement them. "Such an engagement is done only in the course of active living- seeing what needs to be done to improve the quality of human beings and then being motivated to do something to influence change. "If you see something that needs to change, you must have a definite, clear and practical idea of how to make a difference and then be determined to make the idea a reality by using whatever wisdom, money, material or method is available." Smith also told graduates that the educational experiences they have received from Parkside have helped to lay the foundation for their roles in the stage of life. "Your teachers, the staff, your peers, the books and the various experiences have planted the seeds of future ideas which can inspire you to be lifted above the level of your current self." United States Rep. Mark Neumann, the featured speaker for the university's 26th annual commencement ceremony, told graduates that when a strong set of values IS added to their educational experiences, "anything is possible." Neumann, a 1975 graduate of UW- Whitewater, said he learned from his mistakes after losing consecutive bids in 1991 and 1993 for a Congressional District seat in Congress, He was successful in his third try however, defeating Peter Barca last November for the I st Congressional District seat. Neumann explained that there will be "much adversity and failure" for graduates to encounter on the road to the American Dream, but he maintained his belief in the importance of family, values and friends to help make it through tough times. Mark Neumann Six uw- Parkside students honored as outstanding graduates Six University of Wisconsin- Parks ide graduates were honored with Outstanding Graduate Awards during the university's commencement exercise of Sunday, May 14. Students representing the following schools were honored: School of Liberal Arts: Shata Anastasio, Racine, and Maxwell Mount, Racine; School of Business: Bryan Weber, Paddock Lake, and ApriJ Shores, Kenosha; School of Science and Technology: Eric Ellingham, Racine; School of Education: Ellingham, and Mad Pernsteiner, Wausau. Ellingham was also awarded the Chancellor's Award, the highest honor awarded to a graduating senior. Ellingham majored in mathematics. He served as president of the UW-Parkside Mathematics Club and was a dri ver for the Great White Wave Machine, a mobile hands-on science museum that Lravels to schools throughout Kenosha and Racine. Anastasio majored in English with a writing concentration. For the fourth straight year, the Northwestern Wildcats will corne to "Camp Kenosha" for their pre-season training. Approximately 130 players and coaches will leave home base in Evanston for len days. With practices three times a day, these athletes will definitely be put through their paces. Much like the expanding Wisconsin summer NFL "Cheese League." NU conch Gary Barnell' uses the remote Kenosha location to gel his learn focused on (ootbal l . By having them cat, sleep, and think football, Barnett hopes to prepare them for the always-tough Big Ten. This will also be the fourth year in a row that Northwestern will be starting their season versus nationally-ranked Notre Dame. Most schools schedule against somewhat easy non-conference openers, but not NU. Since Barnett arrived from a position with the University of Colorado, pre- conference games have included nationally competitive teams like Stanford, Boston College, and Notre Dame. A full-pads, game-condition scrimmage will be held Saturday, August 19, in the main track/soccer bowl. Dubbed the "Parkside Bowl," this year's event will include pre-scrimmage festivities like a brat, beer and soda tent: an official NU souvenir wagon: and special appearances by the Wildcat Cheerleaders and Willie the Wildcat; all these attractions are courtesy of NU's Wildcat Football Booster Club and the Northwestern Gridiron Network. Admission to the scrimmage is free. It should provide an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the 1995 NU team, not only for Wildcat fans, but also for those interested in seeing a major college football program up-close. .
