Her first piece was entitled
Picture

which
chronicled
the life of one
Korean
woman
who married

out the following
shocking
statistics:
-I
in
3
women
will be a victim
of
rape in her lifetime.
-1 in 4 girls and I in 7 boys will

Myo-

April

has been designated
National
Sexual
Assault
Awareness
Week.
The purpose
of the week is to
increase
awareness
of the problem.
Take the time to get educated.

Myo- Young
said her most recent
political
activism
led to the Holly
report,
which
eventually
led to the
Madison
plan.
"We had done all the work,"
Myo-
Young
said. "Shalala
came in and
signed
on the dotted
line and called
it
her
Madison
plan."
"My dancing
is about
empowerment,"
said Myo-Young.
"It's about revisioning
my own
bloodline,
negotiating
my own
identity
and my heritage
that was
denied
to me. It's also about creating
new cultural
form.
It's about cultural
change
that tied
to
these changes
in
this country
that I would
like to see
systemic
...
to
the point that ethnic
and
cultural
differences
are supported
rather
than tom apart by racism.
I
mean change
so that so that the very
small elite percentage
of this nation's
population
no longer
controls
the
nations
wealth
and the nations
underclass
and mostly
people
of color
will no longer
suffer
as they suffer
now. These
are all very very important
goals for me. Dancing
for me is about
spiritual
empowerment
and political-
liberation.
So what will you do
tomorrow
and today as leaders
of
future
generations?
What will you
do?"
Anthony

the budgetary
rearing
held
at the Gateway,
Kenosha
:arnpus.
One
of the most
important
.tatements
of the evening
was by
Chuck
Chvala,
State
Senator
(0-
vladison)
and ex-candidate
for
jovemor.
He said,
"If this hearing
accomplishes
anything,
it should
make
ilear
that senior
citizens
should
-JEVER
again
have
to come
down
to
a
niblic
hearing
and BEG
for the
noney
to live a normal,
independent
jfe!"
The
crowd
clapped
and cheered.
The
planned
evisceration
of the
Department
of Public
Instruction
.DPI),
and the Thompson
plan
of
eliminating
or stripping
power
from
[he State
Superintendent
and
appointing
someone
drew
many
speakers.
Many
believed
that Tommy
has overstepped
his bounds,
and
wondered
at the apparent
lack
of
common
sense.
One
oddity
was that the possibility
of cutting
out the Public
Intervener's
Office
of the DNR
and filling
it with
a
Thompson
appointee
drew
more
speakers
than
the education
issues.
Now
this idea
is
pretty
stupid,
and tbe
speakers
(about
ten of them)
did have
a good
point
in opposing
this.
However,
it seems
mighty
strange
that
more
people
talked
about
this than
about
the lack
of UW-System
funding!
One
older
gentleman's
comment
was
particularly
telling,
saying
that he wanted
to see the
environment
safeguarded.
Doesn't
he
care
about
education
being
safeguarded
too, or isn't
this
important?
Speaking
against
the proposed
UW-
System
budget
cuts
were
Chancellor
Eleanor
J. Smith,
PSGA
President
Tom
Richie,
PSGA
Senators
Teri
Jacobson
and Tom
Belongia,
Lucia
Herrera-Delgadillo,
Lika
Maria
Morishita,
Mark
Lewis,
and
fermer
PSGA
Senator
Bruce
Rocco,
and
myself.
Herrera-Delgadillo,
UW-
Parkside
teacher
of English
as a
second
language
(ESL),
eloquently
asked,
"Why
is there
more
money
to
build
prisons
than
there
is to fund
education?"
(Yes,
absent
Senator
Petak,
why
is there?
Do you
have
any
good
answer?
I really
would
like to
know.)
It appears
that
we had many
speakers,
but most
of us (including
myself)
spoke
late in the evening,
after
the crowd
had already
thinned
out.
However,
there
were
many
students
present
to show
solidarity
against
the OW-System
budget
cuts,
around
55 people,
and most
of them
did stick
around.
Other
PSGA
members
present
were
Arian
Rana
Adair-Nichols
(pSG
A VP),
and Boyd
Frederick
(former
Senator).
PSGA
did
indeed
put their
money
where
their
mouths
were,
and showed
that they
truly
DO care
about
the students.
Parkside
apathy
might
just
shrivel
up
and die. (But
don't
hold
your
breath.)
All of the Democratic
Senators
and
Reps
from
Southeastern
Wisconsin
were
present,
including
Robert
Turner
and Kim
Plache
(Racine),
Jim
Kreuser,
Joe Andrea.
and Bob
Wirch
(Kenosha).
However,
why
was
it that
we had more
interest
from
Sen.
Chvala,
who
has no constituency
down
here,
than
our own
Republican
Reps?
Sen.
Petak
and Rep.
Ladwig
(both
R-Racine)
who
definitely
have
constituencies
in Southeastern
Wisconsin
were
mysteriously
absent!
Perhaps
they
misread
the map?
Or
was
it, as Tom
Belongia
said,
that they
"just
don't
care
to see who
it is that
they
are about
to destroy?"
Finally,
as Rep.
Turner
(D-Racine)
put it, "Contact
your
state
and local
government
officials.
Let them
know
how
you feel,
and if they
refuse
to
heed
your
message,
remember
your
power."
In other
words,
vote
them
out,
out,OUT!
Quote

Tommy

Making
Sense
Out Of It All
Trivial
Pursuit
by Mike
Schaefer
I bought
a new
truck
last week.
Well,
not new
per se, but new
to me. It's nice
to be mobile
again.
Its nice
to be able
to say,"Sure,
I'll pick
ya' up at.;"
then
don't.
I can cruise
beaches
now,
with
my Mr. Microphone
and announce,"Hey.
baby,
I'll be back
to
pick
ya' up later."
Once
again
I can leave
my brights
on when
I
crest
a hilltop.
Hell,
I can drive
without
my lights
on or just
my
parking
lights.
So many
choices:
left
ill
right
blinker,
hazard
lights,
dome
light...
Hey!
Now
I've
got an ashtray
to collect
roaches
in.
I love
having
a vehicle.
I can now
haul
ass through
construction
zones.
I now
have
a bumper
on which
to put my "I ~ my dog",
my
"I
+
my seal",
my "Jesus
.'s
Dick,"
my "End
Racism,
Kill
Everybody",
my "Butch
in the streets,
Femme
in the sheets"
and
my Elvis
bumper
stickers.
I can engrave
my initials
on ex-
girlfriends'
parents'
lawns,
pick
up hitchhikers,
run over
pets,
get
airborne
over
railroad
tracks,
wedge
a Big-Wheel
under
my front
bumper
and drive
maniacally
through
school
zones,
cut through
gas stations
and parking
lots rather
than
wait
for the light
10
tum
green,
seriously
screw
with
the your-turn,
my-turn
social
custom
at four-way
stop
signs
and yield
signs.
Heck,
I can not yield.
Ohrnlgod.
one word:
tailgate!
And,
since
I have,
specifically,
a
truck.
I can push
most
other
cars
out of their
parking
spaces
at the
mall
or wherever.
Hey,
I can smuggle
things.
Especially
with
a truck.
Check
this
out. The
last time
I was
in Florida
I noticed
the pawn
shops
were
selling
guns
twenty-five
to forty
percent
cheaper
than
such
businesses
up here
in the north
country.
Actually,
in my travels,
I've
noticed
most
of the South
has pretty
good
deals
for your
arms
dollar,
which
anybody
with
a vehicle
(such
as, of recent,
moi),
a
few connections
and a little
bit of capitol
can get in on. Why,
the
mark-up
on one pistol-grip,
twelve
gauge
pump
could
cover
the
gas money
to
and from,
oh, say Atlanta
or Memphis.
Even
more
if
you know
some
gullible
junior
high
gangsta
muthaf-kas.
As long
as we're
on this smuggling
thing,
I think
the illegal
immigrant
trade
would
be a great
way
to pay for college.
Apparently,
illegal
immigrants
from
China,
Viet-Nam
and other
points
far east
are paying
upwards
of ten grand
to be smuggled'
into
the U.S.
Then,
when
they
reach
L.A
or San Fran
or wherever,
that's
it, they're
on they're
own,
stuck
in some
West
Coast
seaport
and nowhere
to go. it's really
awful
and my heart
goes
out to 'em.
So, there's
a market
for some
charitable
person,
for, say,
seven
hundred
to a thousand
per, to take
these
new
arrivals
to our
country
wherever
in the lower
forty-eight
they
would
care
to go.
Sure,
they'd
be just
as lost wherever
they
ended
up, but at least
they'd
be stranded
in the city of their
choice.
Ya'
know,
I could
probably
fit at least
seven
of 'em in the back
of my truck,
which
I'm sure
is a helluva
lot more
sanitary
than
the bilge
pump
room
of some
leaky
trawler.
I've
already
looked
into this a bit (saw
a special
on 20/20)
and
less than
a quarter
of the smugglers
are ever
caught
and of those
less than
five
percent
ever
serve
the maximum
jail sentence:
a
whopping
three
months.
And
apparently,
the sentences
don't
go
up for repeat
offenses.
And
technically,
I'm not even
smuggling
Mg. Ed. Note-

YOU
have
To the Editor,
Many
thanks
go out to the students,
faculty,
and administration
for the
tremendous
showing
last Wednesday
evening
at the budget
hearing.
I
tip my
hat to the Parkside
Student
Government
for the long
hours
put
forth
to assure
organization
and
recruitment
of the number
of people
they
did.
I extend
my thanks
to the
Black
Student
Union
and the Hispanic
Organization
of Parkside
for attending
in full force.
Also,
the administrative
turn-out
from
the university
was
sensational.
Finally,
that
last
hardcore
group
of individuals
who
were
there
by 6:00
pm and didn't
get the
microphone
in their
hand
until
nearly
11:00
pm.
I envy
your
determination.
All in all, it was
a momentous
evening
for the University
of Wisconsin-
Parkside.
Thanks
a million!
Tom
Richie,
PSGA
President
anyone
into
the country.
Basically,
I'd be picking
up hitchhikers
(for a small,
onetime
only
fee, of course).
And
on my way
to the
West
Coast
I could
detour
through
Memphis
or Dallas
and pick
up
some
hand
guns
to cover
costs
so them
immigrants
would
be pure
profit.
.
I could
take
a week
off maybe
once
every
couple
of months,
make
the trip and get a whole
lot more
than
I'm getting
from
my
student
loans
now.
And
ycu'can't
say I'm not working
for it.
There's
much
more
to smuggling
than
just
filling
out a few
forms
to give
to Lloyd
down
at the financial
aid office.
Not that I dislike
Lloyd,
he's
a rockin'
cat, but ya' know
I feel
like a mooch,
living
off taxpayers,
prostituting
myself
for an education.
When
I get
money
I like to be able
to say that
I earned
it, ya' know?
With
smuggling
I mean
ya' gotta
make
the contacts,
sell your
service,
be
cool
under
pressure
in the hick
towns
and drive
casually
... And
you,
as a smuggler,
are bound
to come
across
some
real
scumballs
that ya' gotta
know
how
to handle.
Oh,

reasons

lighter
side
that
incorporates
a
puppy
love
theme
with
great
song
writing.
Most
impressive
are the beautiful
strings
that
accompany
a clean
rhythm
and
in their
recordings.)
This
gives
them
a parallel
with
Alice
in
Chains,
which
used
string
instruments
extensively
on
their
recent
Jar of Flies
album.
They
were
a commercial
success,
but most
of
their
alternative-like
music
was
earlier
in their
career.

In fact,
I'd probably
join
them!)
There
also
are some
other
bands
and
individuals
that
definitely
have
had
an impact
on alternative
music.
I
would
say that
Jimi
Hendrix,
Iron
Butterfly,
and
Cream
had
some
impact.
That
is because
of the
psychedelic
nature
of some
of
their
best
music.
60's
psychedelia
definitely
figures
into
alternative
somewhere,
because
it has factored
into
some
groups
as diverse
as
Smashing
Pumpkins,
Nine
Inch
Nails,
and
of course
catchy
chorus.
More
recently
is the song
that
appeared
on the
soundtrack
for the movie
Time
Cop.
The
classic
Outsiders

"Time

a
perfect
example
of the basic
rock
versatility
that
the
Smithereens
are capable
of.
The
song
is great,
but
I'm
not
sure
that
I
can
say
the same
for
the movie.
Blown
To Smithereens
contains
all these
songs
and
more,
sixteen
in all.
I
can
honestly
say that
every
song
on
this
album
is truly
great.
Every
song
is pure
Smithereens,
which
means
this
is an album
that

MILWAUKEE
CLASSIC.
The first meet was a 36-hole
meet
held April 14-15at Dretzka
Park GC
in Menominee
Falls. The first day
brought
almost-ideal
conditions
for
scoring,
with temperatures
in the 50s
and light winds.
After firing a team
score of 312 the first day, the Rangers
went home with
a
10
stroke
lead.
The second
day brought
a dramatic
increase
in winds,
much cooler
temperatures,
and a hard charge
by the
Division
1 Marquette
Golden
Eagles.
Coming
from the pack. the Golden
Eagles
finished
the last day tied with
the Rangers
with a two-day
total of
629. After some debate.
the coaches
decided
to have a team playoff
on the
first hole. As a result,
ten players
from
Marquette
and Parksidc
went off the
first tee to decide
the championship.
The fatal blow was delivered
by
Parkside's
Aron Hogden,
who sank a
10-foot
par putt to put the Golden
Eagles
away.
"Dretzka
played
tough
because
of
strong
winds,
wet ground,
and it was
just a long course,"
said Brent Heit.
Coach
Stephens
added,
"Putting
was
difficult
because
the greens
were fast
and bumpy.
The strategy
of Slaying
below
the hole was very important."
Ah,
yes- the advantages
of spring

was led by defending
champion

who

Boedecker
finished
3rd, while in 4th was Brent

Dave Kopp was
5th at 158(76-82),
while Aron
Hogden
and Brad Evans
finished
out
the scoring
at 162(86-76)
and 164
(82-82).

The Rangers
record
is
now 12-13-1
on the year.
The first game saw the Rangers
hit
two homeruns
in the top of the
seventh
inning
to take
a
9-7 advantage
and held on for the I run win. Jamie
Karow
and Mike DeMeuse
hit the
homeruns
in the seventh.
It
was

of the day.
Scott Fletcher
picked

Dave Kopp garnered
his first Tour

by firing a 2-over-par

winning
by two strokes.
"These

far. One could

Mother

that the Rangers
were to
play in. A triangular

ground/drainage
problems
cancelled
a

However,
Coach
Stephens
feels the
team is playing
well. Adds Aron
Hogden,
"I
don't
feel that we've
played
our best golf yet." The
Rangers
have this week to sharpen
their games

they journey
April
