UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE students Speak Against Proposed State Budget by Pamela Bradshaw "Education cuts never heal," "Ignorance breeds ignorance, Education breeds prosperity," these slogans and many more were drawn on signs held by UW- Parkside students attending a hearing on the proposed state budget, Bill AB 150. Held on April 19th in the conference center at Gateway in Kenosha, students, the elderly, the disabled, public school educators and others gathered; most waiting to voice their opposition to the cuts that would be made if Bill AB1S0 was passed. The bill proposed a 6.1 % increase in tuition the first year and a 5.25% increase the second. Additionally. there would be a $40 tuition surcharge the first year and $80 the second to offset cuts in General Program Revenue. A technology fee would also be added, J % ($21) the first year and 2% ($43) the second. State financial aid would be level funded or cut and there is no money set aside for the Tuition Award Program. Further cuts are being considered in advising, counseling, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the Adjunct budget and possibly changing the four schools to two schools. State legislators that attended the meeting were: Senator Andrea, Senator Chvala, Representati ve Coggs, Representative Kreuser, Representative Plache and Representative Turner. Coggs and Chvala are members of the JOint Finance Committee. Before the public began speaking Kreuser expressed his dissatisfaction with the budget bill, "We've gone from a state-funded system to a state supported system." He also felt that it would, "punish some people who work while going to school." Overall, Kreuser stated that he was against increases in tuition and decreases in financial aid. Chancellor Smith attended the meeting and-spoke on the impact the proposed budget would have on faculty and students, "Education is an investment in the future, the backbone of society ...Students are our future leaders ...we must provide them quality education at an affordable price." "I am really energized and excited to be in a room of talented people," said Nydia Adames-Petty, Coordinator of Retention Services at OMSA. "I think we can't say enough about that." Anthony Brown, Director of OMSA, 'said that there was much to celebrate. "In 1989. 10 students graduated. In 1990 we had 17 people. This year there are 32 people graduating." At the ceremony, Mark Lewis read his poem, "Let My Heritage Rise," which reads, in part, "I can't let my people, heritage, and history cease. If you want my history to fade, you will have to rise above me. But still it won't languish." Chancellor Eleanor J. Smith was the keynote speaker. "Your commitment and hard work are to be celebrated," said Smith. "We acknowledge that what you have achieved has not come easily. You selec.ted to make quality a priority." Smith wanted us to choose to be excellent. "Excellence is not a sometime affair, it is a way of life and encompasses the four areas of your being: spiritual, mental, physical and SOCial," she said. Shakespeare lecture to be held 'The Questionable Life of William Shakespeare" is the slide lecture topic of Felicia Lcndre. a distinguished theater historian at the University of Missouri- Kansas City. Londre, author or editor of eight books and over 60 articles, currently occupies the Women's Chair in Humanistic Studies at Marquette University. Her talk presents evidence that Shakespeare was not the author of the plays attributed to him. Londre serves on the editorial and advisory boards of Theatre Symposium, The Elizabethan Review, Theatre Survey, Theatre History Studies, and ten other publications. Elevator company changes The University of Wisconsin-Parkside has retained Millar Elevator Co. to assess its short-term and long-term elevator needs. The University's relationship with OtislUnitec ended April 12. Further assessment of the problems of the Molinaro Hall elevator is ongoing. The University is working with the state Division of Facilities Development and a Madison consultant in an effort to eliminate the troublesome hydraulic system. "We are facing cuts at the university that are affecting our students mostly," she said. Andrea Davis spoke on behalf of the disabled. She advised that taking money away from the disabled would reduce their ability to achieve a college education and become productive members of the community, "Please fill our colleges, not our nursing homes." The person who have their name on these signs are trained volunteers who care about the survivors of sexual violence. What is a "Surviving Sexual Assault Advocate"? An advocate is a trained listener who provides moral support, assistance exploring available options, and makes referrals. The role of an advocate is to empower a victim to make educated decisions. The U.W. Parkside "Surviving Sexual Assault Advocacy" Program is a collaborative effort of students. faculty, and staff members who work together. In addition to general information about sexual assault and how it affects victims, their families, and friends; our advocates have received training in advocacy, crisis intervention techniques, investigation and criminal justice procedures, University disciplinary proceedings, and community resources. The advocates are prepared to assist both primary and secondary victims of sexual violence. Training of advocates is done by members of the Student Health Services, Residence Housing, Student Counseling Services, and the University Police. A Native American man, John Bodine, empowered her, making her aware of her identity. Her first piece was entitled Picture Bride, which chronicled the life of one Korean woman who married a man of whom she had only seen a picture. She was one of many such 'picture brides.' "Their hopes of a better life were often shattered when they walked off tbe gangplank they met their old husbands who were about 20 years older than their pictures," said Myo-Young. 'These women carried the triple burden of not only working in the fields beside their husbands, but also had the chore of helping with the household needs and meeting the needs of their own children." "I am trying to bring these stories to the public because they are being ignored," said Myo-Young. "I had to do something to remember her story because it is happening to many women of color, to many other women. It's not just her life. We have a responsibility to talk about the unspeakable before we can move National Sexual Assault Awareness Week What is sexual assault? In Wisconsin, sexual assault is sexual contact or sexual intercourse with a person without the consent of that person. How does sexual contact affect me? Check out the following shocking statistics: -I in 3 women will be a victim of rape in her lifetime. -1 in 4 girls and I in 7 boys will be sexually abused as children. -92% of all sexual assaults reported in 1993 in Wisconsin were committed by someone known to the victim. -There were 7487 sexual assaults reported that same year, a 4.7% increase from 1992. forward and make our society better." As a person of color, she feels it is imperative to express this spirit, or han, in her art. "If we don't fight for ourselves no one else will give it to us." she said. People of color need to find areas of commonality, themes that will empower this population. "On a concrete and practical level, not only do I dance, but I'm also work for a political and cultural transformation by teaching my dancers in the school system, creating curriculum alternatives," said Myo- Young. "This has been very very frustrating for me. In a a way I feel that I am hitting my head against a concrete wall. The school system is very rigid, it's really old fashioned, and at the bottom line, I think it's racist. It does not support the artists of color very easily." "I'm always fighting," she said. "I feel like I'm always fighting, except for the students. I love the children. I'm also working in longer term projects to provide an alternative cultural program." Sexual assault affects everyone! "It's about revisioning my own bloodline, negotiating my own identity and my heritage that was denied to me. It's also about creating new cultural form. It's about cultural change that tied to these changes in this country that I would like to see systemic ... to the point that ethnic and cultural differences are supported rather than tom apart by racism. I mean change so that so that the very small elite percentage of this nation's population no longer controls the nations wealth and the nations underclass and mostly people of color will no longer suffer as they suffer now. These are all very very important goals for me. Dancing for me is about spiritual empowerment and political- liberation. So what will you do tomorrow and today as leaders of future generations? What will you do?" Smith, PSGA President Tom Richie, PSGA Senators Teri Jacobson and Tom Belongia, Lucia Herrera-Delgadillo, Lika Maria Morishita, Mark Lewis, and fermer PSGA Senator Bruce Rocco, and myself. Herrera-Delgadillo, UW- Parkside teacher of English as a second language (ESL), eloquently asked, "Why is there more money to build prisons than there is to fund education?" (Yes, absent Senator Petak, why is there? Do you have any good answer? I really would like to know.) It appears that we had many speakers, but most of us (including myself) spoke late in the evening, after the crowd had already thinned out. However, there were many students present to show solidarity against the OW-System budget cuts, around 55 people, and most of them did stick around. Other PSGA members present were Arian Rana Adair-Nichols (pSG A VP), and Boyd Frederick (former Senator). PSGA did indeed put their money where their mouths were, and showed that they truly DO care about the students. Parkside apathy might just shrivel up and die. (But don't hold your breath.) All of the Democratic Senators and Reps from Southeastern Wisconsin were present, including Robert Turner and Kim Plache (Racine), Jim Kreuser, Joe Andrea. and Bob Wirch (Kenosha). However, why was it that we had more interest from Sen. Chvala, who has no constituency down here, than our own Republican Reps? Sen. Petak and Rep. Ladwig (both R-Racine) who definitely have constituencies in Southeastern Wisconsin were mysteriously absent! Perhaps they misread the map? Or was it, as Tom Belongia said, that they "just don't care to see who it is that they are about to destroy?" Finally, as Rep. Turner (D-Racine) put it, "Contact your state and local government officials. Let them know how you feel, and if they refuse to heed your message, remember your power." Why, the mark-up on one pistol-grip, twelve gauge pump could cover the gas money to and from, oh, say Atlanta or Memphis. Even more if you know some gullible junior high gangsta muthaf-kas. As long as we're on this smuggling thing, I think the illegal immigrant trade would be a great way to pay for college. Apparently, illegal immigrants from China, Viet-Nam and other points far east are paying upwards of ten grand to be smuggled' into the U.S. Then, when they reach L.A or San Fran or wherever, that's it, they're on they're own, stuck in some West Coast seaport and nowhere to go. it's really awful and my heart goes out to 'em. So, there's a market for some charitable person, for, say, seven hundred to a thousand per, to take these new arrivals to our country wherever in the lower forty-eight they would care to go. Sure, they'd be just as lost wherever they ended up, but at least they'd be stranded in the city of their choice. Ya' know, I could probably fit at least seven of 'em in the back of my truck, which I'm sure is a helluva lot more sanitary than the bilge pump room of some leaky trawler. I've already looked into this a bit (saw a special on 20/20) and less than a quarter of the smugglers are ever caught and of those less than five percent ever serve the maximum jail sentence: a whopping three months. With this album came the single "Too Much Passion" which was probably their biggest hit ever . It was their biggest hit for all the right reasons though. "Too Much Passion" is a song on the lighter side that incorporates a puppy love theme with great song writing. Most impressive are the beautiful strings that accompany a clean rhythm and in their recordings.) This gives them a parallel with Alice in Chains, which used string instruments extensively on their recent Jar of Flies album. I would say that Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, and Cream had some impact. That is because of the psychedelic nature of some of their best music. 60's psychedelia definitely figures into alternative somewhere, because it has factored into some groups as diverse as Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, and of course catchy chorus. More recently is the song that appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Time Cop. The classic Outsiders tune "Time Won't Let Me" is a perfect example of the basic rock versatility that the Smithereens are capable of. The song is great, but I'm not sure that I can say the same for the movie. Blown To Smithereens contains all these songs and more, sixteen in all. I can honestly say that every song on this album is truly great. Every song is pure Smithereens, which means this is an album that gets back to the basics of great rock n roll. No matter what your tastes, you'll dig it. Soundgarden. And finally. the main thing that Styx, early Genesis, and the other groups have in common with current "alternative" bands is the visceral nature of their music. MILWAUKEE CLASSIC. The first meet was a 36-hole meet held April 14-15at Dretzka Park GC in Menominee Falls. The first day brought almost-ideal conditions for scoring, with temperatures in the 50s and light winds. After firing a team score of 312 the first day, the Rangers went home with a 10 stroke lead. The second day brought a dramatic increase in winds, much cooler temperatures, and a hard charge by the Division 1 Marquette Golden Eagles. Coming from the pack. the Golden Eagles finished the last day tied with the Rangers with a two-day total of 629. After some debate. the coaches decided to have a team playoff on the first hole. As a result, ten players from Marquette and Parksidc went off the first tee to decide the championship. The fatal blow was delivered by Parkside's Aron Hogden, who sank a 10-foot par putt to put the Golden Eagles away. "Dretzka played tough because of strong winds, wet ground, and it was just a long course," said Brent Heit. Coach Stephens added, "Putting was difficult because the greens were fast and bumpy. The strategy of Slaying below the hole was very important." Ah, yes- the advantages of spring golf. Parkside was led by defending champion Andy Boedecker, who 10talOO 156(76-80). Boedecker finished 3rd, while in 4th was Brent Heit at 157(78-79). Dave Kopp was 5th at 158(76-82), while Aron Hogden and Brad Evans finished out the scoring at 162(86-76) and 164 (82-82). MATC INVITATIONAL On April 17, the Rangers traveled to Cherokee CC in Madison, where they won their second tournament in a TOW. The course was tight, with hazards abounding to gather up any bad shots. However, Dave Kopp played Nick Faldo-like golf and led the Rangers to a 17-stroke victory in the to-team invite. UW-Stevens Point UW-Parkside team splits with UIC The UW-Parkside Baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Illinois-Chicago winning the first game 9-8 and dropping the second 13-8. Both games were 7 innings. The Rangers record is now 12-13-1 on the year. The first game saw the Rangers hit two homeruns in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-7 advantage and held on for the I run win. Jamie Karow and Mike DeMeuse hit the homeruns in the seventh. It was Karow's second homerun of the day. Scott Fletcher picked up the win and also hit a homerun to help his cause. placed second behind Parkside's 390 with a team score of 407. Dave Kopp garnered his first Tour victory by firing a 2-over-par 74, winning by two strokes. "These were the best greens we had played on so far. One could finally hit a puu on the right line and look forward to it going in," said Brent Heit. Mother Nature took care of the next two meets that the Rangers were to play in. A triangular meet on April 18 was rained out. while snow on the ground/drainage problems cancelled a trip to Winona, MN April 20-21. However, Coach Stephens feels the team is playing well. Adds Aron Hogden, "I don't feel that we've played our best golf yet." The Rangers have this week to sharpen their games before they journey April 28 to Lake Arrowhead GC in Nekoosa, WI for the Pointer Invitational. Then comes the pi votal tournament- the NCAA Division II District IV Tournament April 30-May I at Deer Track GC in Auburn, IN. The second game saw Mark Sura take the loss. UIC scored 8 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Scon Fletcher hit his second homerun of th day in the nightcap. Shawn Babcock also picked up an RBI triple. UW-Parkside baseball defeats Quincy and Southern Indiana The University of Wisconsin- Parks ide baseball team won two games on Saturday over Quincy University and the University of Southern Indiana. The Rangers record is now 14-13-1. Also. on Saturday Quincy fell to Southern Indiana 5-4. The games scores involving the Rangers were UWP 5-3 over Quincy and UWP 3-2 over Southern Indiana. In the first game, Jeff Lonigro led the Rangers with two hits and two runs scored. The game was broken open in the 5th when a Quincy error led to two Rangers runs. That broke a 3-3 deadlock and put the Rangers in the lead to stay. Mike Davis also had two hits in t he first game. Mike DeMeuse (3-3) went the distance and picked up the win for the Rangers. The second game saw UW-Parkside go down 1-0 after one inning to Southern Indiana. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Scott Fletcher hit a 3 run homerun to make the score 3-1. Southern Indiana was able to score once in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Rangers came away with their second win of the day. Mark Sura (6-4) went the distance for the Rangers striking out six. Lonigro had two hits and one run scored in the second game. UW-Parkside baseball team splits on Sunday The University of Wisconsin- Parkside's split two games on Sunday losing to Southern Indiana 10-5 and defeating Quincy University 5-4. That leaves the Rangers record at 15-15-1 in Jack Klebesadel's first season as coach of the team. The first game of the day saw Jeff Dykes take the loss as Southern Indiana scored 4 times in the first, once in the second, and three times in the third to take an 8-3 lead. The Rangers scored three in the bottom of the first bill we're only able to muster single runs in the fourth and fifth. For the Rangers Scott Fletcher had a double, single and run scored. Jamie Karow hit a homerun in the bottom of the first. Jeff Lonigro also had a double and run scored. The second game saw Scott Fletcher pick up the win versus Quincy as the Rangers scored three times in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead and hold on to win 5-4. Jamie Karow had two hits, three runs scored, and one RBI. Mike DeMeuse also had two hits and three RBI's, one of his hits was a double. Mike Davis also had two hits in the game versus Quincy. The Rangers will next play today at 4 pm versus Concordia. UW-Parkside softball wins two on Saturday UW-Parkside's softball team moved to 32-11 on the year after winning two games and losing one on Saturday, both ga -re played at Petrifying Springs 1 The Rangers are currently ranked #17 in the country for NCAA Division IISoftball teams. In the first game UW-Parkside defeated Viterbo 11-2. Jackie Aiken, Billi Kapla, and Shelley Stroik all homered for the Rangers. Aiken was 3-3 in the game. Tracy Brauer (3-0) was the winning pitcher for UW- Parkside, In the second game the Rangers fell to Division I Evansville 6-2. Billi Kapla took the loss. Wendy Wolff (17-7) pitched a one hitter with 9 strikeouts in the seventh inning game. Parkside duo takes 2nd at Nationals Ali De Witt and AI Heppner both took second at the 2nd Annual National Collegiate Walking Alliance (NCWA) Championships. De Witt pulled away from Danielle Kirk and finished in a personal best time of 50:06 which qualified her for the US Track and Field Championships in Sacramento. Kirk had been under the weather all week, but still hung in for a third place finish. Pam Tucker, in her first season, shaved two minutes off her previous best time and finished 4th. Margaret Ditchburn (7th) also walked a career best. Susan Armenta of Cal-Poly Pomona won the race in a Olympic Trials qualifying timeof48:19. AI Heppner broke out of a personal slump and set a personal best with his 2nd place finish. The pre-race favorite, Will Cedarville, Ohio won the race and qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials. 'The thing I liked the best was the great racing intensity. VanAxen, was bothered by a calf injury, but still finished 3rd. Both times are under the US Championships standard. VanAxen and Heppner were named All-American. Defending champion Tim Seaman, coming off a injury, chose to only walk 10 km. Bucks season ends on high note Sports Jeopardy By: Hans Weitkuhn The Milwaukee Bucks finished their season at 34-48, a fourteen game improvement from last season. They finished two games behind Boston for the last spot ensuring another lottery selection. The Bucks beat the Celtics 106-97 at the Bradley Center on Wednesday. The Bucks outscored Boston 30-16 in the 2nd on 61% shooting. consecutive FG's by Eric Murdock put them up 41-34 with 4:00 left in the 2nd- Robinson scored on an alley-cop from Murdock with 0:25 left for a 51-42 halftime lead. The Bucks blew it open in the third quarter leading by as much as 21. A steal by Todd Day led to Robinson's fadeaway jumper that put them up 64-51. Robinson, later found Baker for an all- oop jam to increase it to 60-5 I with 5:30 left. Murdock's layup with 3:45 left game the Bucks their biggest lead 76-53. Vin Baker's trey with 1:50 left in the game clinched the victory. Baker led with 27 points and 10 rebounds and Robinson added 26. The Bucks final chance at the playoffs was shot down with a 103-82 lost to Cleveland. The Bucks never led in this game as Cleveland got off to a 12-2 start. Murdock's three pulled them within 18-14 with I: 13 left in the first and that would be as close as they would come. The Cavs Outscored them 31-18 in the second on 58% shooting. In the 2nd half, Cleveland got their biggest lead 86-60 on a four point play by Danny Ferry. Ferry made the tree, fouled by Newman and made the FT. Murdock led with 24 points on 3-3 from three-point range. The Bucks ended their season with a 104-100 victory over the Bulls. Michael Jordan missed two shots in the final minute that would have tied the game. Jordan finished with 33 while Robinson finished with 36. The Bucks, with several talented young players that were involved in a playoff hunt will be back next year. With Voshon Leonard joining them next year, look for the Bucks to use their lottery pick on a center who can rebound. walkers.
