"[Students receiving awards] have to be upper class students," Kirk said. She noted that the University did not get a cut in its budget: it was merely turned down for its 1995-97 TAP biennium, Kirk also expressed concern in Thompson's decision to leave TAP out. Using 1995-96 projections, without the TAP program, the University would experience a cut of 1.15% in its rev-enue or an additional $700,000, from cuts already made, in the 1995-97 budget. In a memo from Kirk, she wrote that "we anticipate $269,075 from tuition payments from TAP students in '95-96; $51,261 from segregated fees; and $14,000 in parking fees." She continually noted that TAPis not a reciprocity program and does not place a restraint on Wisconsin students who would want to attend the University. The TAP program would only make available revenue that would not be otherwise. Because Parkside is primarily a commuter institution, it has limits on recruitment markets by how far students are Willing to drive. This recruitment area is bound by its location with Lake Michigan to the east and Illinois the south. Kirk Marilyn Foster Kirk, Assistant Chancellor of University Relations, expressed concern for Governor Thompson's budget released February 14. In Thompson's budget, the re- authorization of the Tuition Award Program (TAP), allowing Parkside to recruit 200 students from northern Illinois at in-state tuition rates, was absent. "It's an extremely important program:' Kirk said. TAP was first introduced in the 1988-89 academic year and has been expressed concern over whether Wisconsin students could fill the enrollment gap created by the loss of TAP students. Also, with a limited 403 oncampus housing spaces and with 98- 99% occupan c rates in housing near the campus, out-of-area .Kirk students Irom other regions of Wisconsin would not have a place near the campus to stay during their enrollment. All members of the southeastern legislative delegation support an amendment to the governor's budget to re-authorize Representative Cloyd Porter, a member of the Joint Finance Committee, has agreed to support TAP in his committee. The Women's History Month theme is "We'll Make Herstory." The focus of Larson's talk was not reserved for women only. This talk. which turned out to be an open discussion, applied to everybody. Larson's purpose was, and still is, to help people learn how to increase the value upon themselves, and increase their ability to be a "shaker and a maker." Most of the audience left that room with a smile and probably felt a little better that day than usual. Besides handing out a series of helpful leaflets, she wrote on the chalkboard a cycle that everyone seems to follow. She recognized that it's not our fault for willfully traveling this negative cycle. We were taught to follow this cycle ever since we were little. "We were taught to be perfect," she said. The scenario that if you didn't get all A's in school, you could have done berter, is an example. The cycle is composed of four sections; "You don't like yourself:' "You don't take car~ of yourself," "You choose negative behaviors," and "You engage in negative thinking." So said Zimmeri Cox at the African-American Career Fair which UW.parkside hosted on March 16. 300 area high school students attended theevent. The purpose of the fair was 10 promote awareness among African- American students about career choices, and education as a primary road to success. Cox came from poverty to become a respected art history professor. He gradUaled from high school in 1939 during the Great Depression. "We werepoor before that though," said Cox. "I remember going to bed hungry." Education advanced him. As a Fulbright scholar, Cox went to Europe to study architecture and an history. "I got my job because I had theeducation and training:' said Cox. RickJones, a Racine-based lawyer, spoke to a small group about his Success. On All My Children, Gloria was still rocking her baby Anna (really just a pillow, but she makes do.) when her mother came in. Mama Helen Marsh is used to getting her word in, and so when Gloria wouldn't stop paying attention to the pillow, Helen snatched it away. Well, the two fought their way down the hall to the court hearing which was deciding whether or not Gloria was competent to stand trial. Helen showed herself to be a wicked one to the court, and Gloria was found to be insane. Adam, Gloria's husband, was quite glad that she was not going to be tried for his attempted murder. Also in Pine Valley, a touching scene of love and loss: Beside Natalie's grave, Trevor saw Laurel. They promised never to see each other again. As they were parting, Jack walked by. (I'm sure he just wanted to how Natalie was doing.) Inspired by their love, Jack told Laurel she was free to make a life with the fashion refugee. Laurel was so happy, she ran to the Dillon home to tell him the news. Jack drank himself to sleep. And Janet imagined Trevor, Laurel, Timmie, and Harold (the dog) down in the well. Speaking of nutty, on One Life to Live, Todd got idea that his wife Blair might not really be pregnant. Just because she tricked her last rich husband that way, doesn't mean she is trying to trick this rich husband that way. I mean, she didn't know for sure that Todd was Victor's son until after they slept together. And I think the woman actually pregnant. I don't think this storyline can go any other way. Because everyone expects her to he, she's probably telling the truth this time. She had a good thing going with Cord, who is much richer than Todd. Why risk it if you're not pregnant? Ms. Daimler has always been too smart for that. Blair's aunt Dorian is still stuck in the secret room. VikilNikilJean hasn't returned, so she has no food or water. (Thank goodness she still looks fabulous). There is no air circulating. She has no one to talk to (because she didn't think to develop alternate personalities). The. room is getting smaller. Seriously, expect Dorian will soon figure way out of the room. She has already discovered some loose bricks. Expect her to run to the police to confess to killing Victor? Idon't either, but she might tell Clint what Viki/Niki/Jean did to her. Clint has always been very understanding and helpful when Viki struggled with MPD before. Why, he even got Niki to fall in love with him years ago. Since Clint and Viki are destined for one another, expect the recovery process will hasten their reunion. In Salem, Marlena is still hospitalized, and she has those weird glasses, which hide her preternaturally glowing eyes. Stefano's still makirrg a fool of himself about Marlena, and Celeste is not happy about it. .. The devil inside Marlena is probably happy so few of her family members are left in Salem: Roman is gone, Sami is on the run, and Carrie and Austin are searching for her. (Eric didn't even send a Christmas card, but what do you expect from a boy who never visits home?) Like starcrossed lovers, and Austin are distant to one another. She is upset because she found lipstick on his pillow; he is heartbroken because he slept with Sami unknowingly (Remember, she used drugs to make him her sex slave.) and cannot tell Carrie until Sarni releases him from his vow of silence. (Some people can keep their word.) As Brady and Reed look for Sami, Jennifer continues to for Clark, her mother's one-night-stand. This year, even with Nick Zahn's begging and pleading, I had decided Ijust didn't have the time. Those of you who knew me personally last year will probably remember that Ispent a lot of time talking about my future with the U of M at Minneapolis, and I know that some of you who have seen me hallprowling here at UWP but haven't had a chance to talk to me have been curious as to what happened (not losing any sleep over it.J should think, hut just wondering). To he honest, I'm not sure myself "what" happened, but Ican write about some of the events that occurred and let you figure it out for your collective selves. Oh, and for those of you who have no idea who I am (I'm nobody, really, just some guy with a keyboard) 1 hope that even without the background information behind my character, you'll still find the following somewhat entertaining and, maybe, even inspiring. So, since moving to Minneapolis (Sept 1st. 1994) I've had five jobs, one of which was being ~ roadie for Illi: Rooald McDonald for all of Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and part of Missouri who, in 1972, shortly after returning from Viet Nam was in the wrong place at the wrong time in New Orleans and now has on his felony record convictions for heroin smuggling, male prostitution and white slavery. Incidentally, he was a freshman when Elvis was a senior and was in the last class to graduate from Elvis' high school. Also incidentally, he attended many of Elvis' parties (pretty much everyone was invited, Elvis was sooo cool) and the only words The King ever told him were,"Man, you talk too much." [ didn't stay in Minneapolis, but while I was there Idid visit the Mall of America (where Ialmost bought a Kurt Cobain memorial holographic keychain in the shape of a twelvegauge, ya' know, it's so much better to regret the things you did do rather than the things you didn't) and Irode the indoor roller-coaster (cheese, pure cheese); I discovered that even though a city may have an night skyline and pipe classical music to all of its downtown bus stops, the inhabitants can still be, well, less than friendly, ~ for a certain two American Indians Igot reaUy plastered 00 malt liquor (blecchh) with, crawled along underneath a freeway bridge over the Mississippi with, was initiated into their tribe around midnight by, told me a bunch of white people jokes (I didn't get any of them), reminisced about Speed Racer with, and who christened and renamed me "Crazy White Brother" in a blood ritual (I scraped my elbow climbing around on the bridge) although for the life of me [can't remember how to say it in the language of my people. So after having my car towed, becoming loved among the natives of this land (yet hated by my fellow whitemen) and being oppressed in general by our capitalistic, freemarket (what's free about it?) society, I packed all of my belongings and myself into my little Subaru (obviously, I got it back, but little did I know ...) Every so often I will review a 'blast from the past." This means I will review a classic album that is not only great, but one that everyone should have in their collection. Today, with the age of CD's, almost all of the classic albums have been put on CD. Even more recently. the music is being remastered on CD, thus providing even a better sound quality. One such album is Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" It is impossible to mention Jimi Hendrix's name in a sentence without the word "great." In 1967 Hendrix made the world aware, with the release of "Are You Experienced," that he was one of the world's most innovative and greatest guitar players ever born. The album spent an unbelievable 106 weeks on the Billboard charts leveling out at number fi ve. Even today "Are You Experienced?" continues to be a best seller. This is the album that gave us a the unforgettable hits "Purple your Green thumb to the Gtlrden by Barb Cburchill Altetnatlve "'"s\( G"t" Soundgarden really has come a long way in just a few short years. I intend to look at three Soundgarden cassettes, Louder than Love (1989), Badmotorfinger (1991), and Superunknown (1994). Soundgarden is one of the Seattle group of alternative bands. arguably the best known of the group. (One of the others is Alice in Chains.) Louder than Love was one of their first few albums. Chris Cornell. their lead singer. mostly spent his time screaming. The best song on the album is a tune called "Full on Kevin's Mom", in which he laments the end of a friendship because one of Kevin's friends got involved with Kevin's mom. It has odd harmonies and rhythms. but is very listenable, Most of the other songs are quite Haze" and "Foxy Lady." The songs "Fire" and "Hey Joe" are no strangers to the radio waves either. On any given day, on any sort of "rock" station, you are guaranteed to hear at least one or more of these songs, or anyone or more of his other numerous hits. Another good reason to have these classic albums is the fact that there is a lot more outstanding music on the albums that what is played over the radio, or what is rehashed on greatest hits albums. Most of my favorite Hendrix songs usually aren't heard on the radio, or if they are, it's not very often. Besides the popular songs that I have already mentioned, "Are You Experienced" provides many more great songs. "The Wind Cries Mary" is slower, bluesy song that shows off Hendrix's talent of great song writing and his innovative, bluesy guitar style. Less subtle are the rockers "Manic Depression" and "I Don't Live Today." These are songs that compare evenly with his hits "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady." They all contain that raunchy groove that Hendrix was capable of pouring out of his Fender reminiscent of 1960's psychedelia, and some just seem to be thrown together just to make an album. However, it's not a bad attempt. Badmotorfinger had several good songs. "Rusty Cage" talks about how a person will get into a rut, but eventually break out of it (and run). It has catchy lyrics and an interesting rhythmic structure. "Outshined" talks about a guy who's really tired, and feels like life has passed him by. As one line in the song puts it. "1'm looking California, but feeling Minnesota." Although pretty monotonous in melody, the song is memorable and exciting due to its rhythmic intensity. "Slaves and Bulldozers" is the third great song. The rhythm is dri ving and relentless, and the point that they seem to be making is that people in relationships really don't communicate all that well, and eventually they will feel, as the song THE JIMI HENDRIX deadly disease that kills within hours of infecting the victim. Outbreak dazzles the viewer with a star studded cast. Aside from Dustin Hoffman it also stars. Morgan Freeman, Rene Russo, Cuba Gooding, Jr., the ruthless Donald Sutherland and Patrick Dempsey. It is directed by Wolfgang Peterson. Like J stated earlier, I wasn't too Strat. Jimi Hendrix's unbelievable guitar style helped revolutionize the guitar styles used today. It is not hard to believe that what he did in 1967 is still being mocked today, decades later. He remains to be one of the most covered artists, both by amateur and professional musicians alike. To the music world "Are You Experienced" is more than an old says, "What's in it for me?" The other songs here mostly seem to depict Soundgarden as flirting with a heavy-metal sound, and aren't as memorable. In Superunknown, Cornell isn't screaming as much, and almost all the songs are excellent "Black Hole Sun" is the one everyone has heard. and "Fell on Black Days" was also widely heard. These songs depict people upset by failed relationships. Nothing they do is right, and they aren't sure why their partner doesn't care anymore. In "Spoonman" and "Mailman", they depict people who aren't recognized by their loveobject, and are doing everything they possibly can to call attention to themselves so they will have a chance at a relationship. In "Superunkncwn" they lament the uncertainty of life. In "My Wave" they take on hypocrisy. In 'The Day I Tried to Live", they depict 1ICairs from the [:rytic Outllreak impressed with what I saw from the previews. When I actually saw Outbreak, I was a believer. I enjoyed the acting especially Donald Sutherland, he is a born villain. Also with Cuba Gooding. Jr., r noticed a bil more maturity and confidence than in some of his previous films. Rene Russo seemed to be played the usual "We're divorced, but I still love you" role. Notice EXPERIENCE record, it is a piece of history that shows off the talent of one great guitar player. This piece of history deserves not to just be reviewed or criticized, but listened to and appreciated.. Ican say it's great, and time has proven its stability, but the only way for you to know is to explore the Jimi Hendrix experience yourself. frustrated people who really don't know what to do to improve their lives. (They have covered this idea before on a song called "Like Suicide" on Badmotorfinger, but this is a little better.) . Superunknown makes a great deal of sense, and is very listenable. Like any great cassette, and there is always something new worth hearing. It is an excellent cassette, because more of the songs on it are tuneful, yet the rhythmic complexity that they showed on earlier recordings is still intact. They keep getting better, and that shows that they are a group with staying power. Soundgarden seems to have its collective finger on the pulse of modem popular music, for it definitely isn't time for sweetness and light. As a composer myself, J am impressed, and as soon as the new CD comes out I'U be lining up for it. Morgan Freeman didn't really have all that big of a role, nothing compared to The Shawshank Redemption. Overall, I am going to have to give this film a green light. It's got almost everything from a minor love story to a helicopter chase. Ranger Men finish Florida trip 5-2-1 The UW-Parkside Baseball team split a pair of games in Florida defeating California (Penn.) and • losing to St. John's (Minn). The losses drop the Rangers season record to 3-2 on the year. Versus St. John's the Rangers fell 5-3. Mike DeMeuse (1-1) took the loss. Offensively, the Rangers were led by Kevin Kowalke who was 2-3 with a run scored and Shawn Babcock who went 1-2 with one triple, one run scored, and I RBI. Scott Fletcher picked up an RBI single for UW-P. In the second game the Rangers beat California to avenge a 3-2 10 inning loss from earlier in the week. The score was 5-4. Mark Sura gave up four runs in the first inning but then shut down California the rest of the way to move to 2-0 on the year. The Raniers came back to score 2 in the first and 2 in the third to tie the game. They went ahead to stay when Kowalke scored in t he fifth inning on a Jeff Lonigro RBI single. Lonigro scored 2 runs and picked up two hits on the afternoon. Kowalke alw scored twice and picked up 2 hits. Steve Grzeszkiewicz picked up an RBI single in the win. The UW -Parkside Baseball team finished their spring trip with two wins, one lie, and two rainouts. The Rangers defeated Mt. Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on a two-hit shutout by Steve Grzeszkicwicz (1-0) and Brad Skrtich. The Rangers won the game 5-0. Kevin Kowalke scored two runs and Jeff Lonigro was 2-4 with an RBI and scored two run s. The other win for the Rangers was over Kalamazoo College (Mich) 9-0. Mark Sura (3-0) picked up the win for the Rangers with a four-hit shutout while tying a school record with his 13 strikeouts. Sura now has a I. 70 ERA and 30 strikeouts on the season. Lonigro was 1-3 with 3 RBJ's, two runs scored, and one double. Kowalke scored three runs and had three stolen bases. Mike Davis was 1-3 with a two RBI double . UW-Parksidc also tied Brandeis (Mass) 4-4. The game was called because of darkness after 9 innings. Shawn Babcock was 2-4 with one run scored in the ball game.
