The two primary areas of focus were: 1) To make it clear to the legislators of Wisconsin that these budget cuts would hurt the UW system and 2) To stand as an organized group with a clear focus on this matter. To these ends, UC plans to send lobbyists to state legislators to explain what a detri rnent to education these cuts can be. Suggested activities were to hold a "prisoner day" to point out that the prison system is getting more funds than the university system; to hold a funeral for education; to pass out Band-Aids to students to illustrate that these "Cuts Hurt;" or to put on any other type of display based around the theme that these cuts will hurt the educational system. Other matters discussed in the various committees ranged from privacy concerns to cuts in remedial education. Concerns regarding student privacy and the use of Social Security Numbers as student 10 numbers were addressed. lt was decided to look into using some other form of ID for students and to also try to limit the release of confidenri al student information as much as possible to protect student privacy. Proposed cuts in remedial education programs were student privacy. Haines has been the team's top 5000 meter runner all season, but stepped down to the 3000 to try to increase UWP' s team score. The Running Rangers truly shined at the NAJA Indoor National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska. Valerie Niese took control early and won her first of two national championships in the mile with a time of 5:03.19. Colette Marotto also earned All-American status by using a Tracey Pope-like kick to finish 6th in 5:13.31. Niese had the fastest time going into the race, but she still wasn't totally convinced that she could win it all. "I wasn't worried about time. I just wanted to win;" said Niese. "It (the win) was a big relief. It didn't really hit me until later. " Niese raced aggressively, speeding up whenever she was challenged. Parkside finishes fourth in college bowl fashion. Parkside finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with Beloit and Northwestern. College Bowl has two types of questions: the ten-point tossups and the bonuses, which can offer a variable (5-30) number of points. Parkside's Hendrickson finished third in the individual competition in points earned on tossup questions, with 270 out of 7 rounds, answering 30 correctly, five incorrectly and one before being recognized. Carter earned 105 tossup points, Holmberg and Kane 85, and Von Dissen 10. The individual winner in total tossup points, John Carlino from Beloit, earned an astounding 470, with 52 correct and 10 incorrect. However, Carlino earned only 15 points in Beloit's match versus Parkside, the final one for both teams on Saturday. Parkside's win-loss record was 3·4. By nominating their most excellent instructors, students express to the faculty what they appreciate in fine teaching. All full-time members of the faculty and teaching academic staff who have taught at Parkside for at least five years will be considered. After all the nominations are received, a combined student- faculty committee will choose two instructors. The criteria for selection will include student nominations, recent teaching evaluations, syllabi, the instructor's personal philosophy of teaching, and what the instructor considers important to explaining his/her teaching success.
