The activities will be in Main Place from 9am to 2pm. To promote the theme there will be a "kissing" booth opera led by the men's and woman's soccer teams. They will be giving Ou[ Hershey's Kisses with slogans in them such as "Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder." Small notebooks featuring one of four slogans will also be given out. For sale will be condom and abstinence valentines and condom novelties. Students will be able to enter the contest to guess the number of Hershey's Kisses in a "kiss jar." The person with the closest guess will win the entire jar of Hershey's Kisses. "Well ness of Wheels," a portable display, will contain pamphlets regarding subjects like sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex and alcohol. Available at the table will be true/false quizzes, condom quizzes and STD quizzes to help educate stUdents. Arthur Con Mateo Mackbee, Peer Health Educator and captain of the team sponsoring the event, states that there will be new activities this year and old activities that won't be continued. "This year we're going to try to put together at least two panels that have college specific facts about STD's and alcohol related incidents." A dance won't be held this year because of time restraints. Condom roses won't be sold either. Last year the Peer Health Educators made the roses themselves which took a Jot of time. The condom roses were later patented. When Mackbee was asked how well he thought the program worked towards educating students he replied, "I think it works as a whole ...just for them to see all the brochures and the Well ness on Wheels gets their minds thinking if it's just for one day." Mackbee believes that having the program on Valentine's Day increases student's awareness, "It usually is a good turnout because people have love on their minds." Mackbee also states that, ''It helps to have candy and people will always come to get condoms." The vote was 55%, or 101 students for staying in UC, and 45%, or 82 students against. Representatives from the United Council were at Parkside during the vote. These representati yes spoke to the students and addressed issues brought up by Parkside's Student Government Associati on. Her words began this year's tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. entitled "Remember His Dream," held noon Wednesday, Jan 25, in Main Place. The event consisted of music, poetry, speeches, and applause. In Jackson's introduction of this commemorative, she cautioned the audience not to just follow King's advisive dream that day, but to continue further, his dream in the generations to come. "His dream is possible," she said. The program lasted forty-fi ve minutes. The Voices of Parkside and the Parkside Chorale, under the direction of Dr. James Kinchen, sang two selections which celebrate African-American themes. The first piece was entitled "Ujima," and the latter was called "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning." Dr. Kinchen, in reference to the second song, said, "In other words, be ready ..' He said that this song is a spiritual song. "Christian journey soon be over; the time is drawing nigh," is a line from the song that illustrated the urgency of racial harmony. "I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it," said Faith Augustine, after stating that she was asked to sjng Glenn E. Burleigh's piece. "I love the song because it expresses exactly what we need to know - not necessarily as one group of people, but as the world." "Students should be innocent until proven guilty," she said as she read from her "Living the Dream Essay," This finalist ended her speech. saying "I have a dream, that children will be treated as adults someday," Mackbee spoke of Martin Luther King Jr's life attributes - eight major campaigns for equal rights, marching over I OO-mi lcs, and achieving the Nobel Peace Pri/.e - and himself. "In my eyes," Ma~khcc said, "he [Dr. King] is tht: most important civil rights leader." This year's Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoralive ended with applause and a schedule from Rachelle Hart, chairperson of the Black History Month Commitlee, of upcoming events in February for Black History Month. She noted that if everyone sees what everyone has in common with everyone instead of differences, people would get along. A verse and the driving theme of "Ujima" is that "it takes a village to make a man." Mark Lewis, a student of Parkside, recited two poems - "Shadows in the Darkness" and "My People:' Each poem stressed a powerful theme that should be observed closer. In "My People," Lewis warned the audience of low self- esteem, indicating that it causes violence, and then said that if people have high self-esteem, they will also have high estecm for one another - eventually coming together. A quote from the poem reads, "If some of us don't get our act togeLher, we will lose our existence ... My people, get it together, and we must get it right." In his first poem, Lewis talked of existence, but in ignorance: 'There's no difference in the total darkness," began the first line. I, 1995. "All previous attempts at recycling were just warm-ups .or this· the real thing," according to Bill Niebhur, Director of the Parkside Union. Niebbur explained that the campus waste stream and compliance to the new law will be monitored by our trash and recyclable contractor, Go of Wisconsin/Land Reclamation Company ,LRC) of Racine. According to Neibhur there are two alernents to the food service area \·ec'y~ling problem. The first is to simply get people to do it according to the signs .hat h~ve been provided. That is, to take the r\rhc to separate items and put them in their appropriate containers. The second -s to make sure non-rccyclables do not get In with those items that are acceptable .ur rec ycli ng . This is called .ccntami nation. This category of products was given a one year extension from the current law due to a lack of sources to sell it to. LRC has agreed to lake it on campus now, CUlling down on the confusion that would probably occur if it were 10 be added at a later date. As an example of a product being used on campus made from rccyclables (and there are quite a few), all of the replacement parking bumpers being purchased by residence life for their lot are made of recycled plastic. They are much lighter and easier to install than the old cement variety, and hold up equally well if not better. While it may take some time to get used 10 recycling, everyone should attempt to do so to the best of their ability. 'i- Snowmobile accident by Brian Matsen On Friday, January 20, at approximately 10:30 p111. a male in his late twenties was involved in a snowmobile accident on UW~Parkside property. The UW-P police department was unauthorized to give the injured man's name. On Hwy E. cast of Hwy JR, the victim was knocked off of his snowmobile while passing through the Parkside baseball field parking lot. He didn't see the chain separating the 101 from the field, said Chief Robert Deane. People walking by notified the UW-P police, and an officer administered first aid. The injured man was brought to 51. Catherine's Hospital by ambulance, where his condition was unknown. No further information was given and an investigation is still pending. This week's volunteer is Colette Eckert. Colette Eckert is a senior majoring in molecular biology with a pre- professional interest in medicine. Colette became a member of the Parkside Volunteer Program in July 1993 when she volunteered in the emergency room at Kenosha Memorial Hospital & Medical Center. Beginning in October 1993 Colene helped out at the Kenosha County Medical Examiner's Office and Colette Eckert assisted with autopsies.
