'" involved in the Parkside Student Bruce Rocco Government Association (PSGA) (anarti<t'srmdering) as an dedicated and active member, will be taking a temporary leave of absence. During Rocco's two year involvement with this organization he has made great efforts in improving PSGA along with the entire student body. Until the recent PSGA meeting, held Friday, Jan. 20, he was SUFAC liaison to both the Parkside Child Care Center an the Ranger News. In the time since he was elected as senator in the spring of 1992, Bruce has worked hard at constantly getting resolutions and policies passed. One of the programs he worked hardest on was the safewalk program which began in the spring of 1993 after a rape occurred on Wood Road. With Bruce Rocco's resolution and footwork, along with great efforts from Marlene Schlecht, UW- Parks ide police officer, the program made it off the ground. Bruce recalls that it was the first time PSGA had ever established a working relationship between the Assistant Chancellor of Student Affairs and the UW-Parkside Police Department. "It was the first piece of legislature," Rocco recalled, "that I have ever seen passed with acclimation and signed by the President [of PSGAj that day." Bruce feels that his greatest accomplishment with PSGA has yet to happen, but he said, "The next greatest accomplishment is that [ have developed a fine working relationship with the finest bunch of professionals that I have ever met in my life." Other activities Bruce Rocco and the entire student government have been strongly involved with include budget cuts, United Council, and trying to get more people involved In public elections in both Racine and Kenosha counties and on the national scene. Rocco also held the position of Vice President of PSGA from December, 1993 through April I, 1994. Science Grants Awarded by Brian Matsen News Writer Due to the persistent efforts of Joseph Balsano, the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide has been awarded two federal grants worth nearly $90,000. Balsano, a professor of biological sciences, is a man whose goal is to see more science taught in classrooms. Science Fellows I, one of Balsano's programs. was awarded $40,807 and has been an on-going project for the past ten years. Every year for the past decade, Bals ano has 'received funding from outside sources such as school districts and various programs. "I've been very fortunate," he commented. Originally, the federal government funded his efforts under the National Science FOundation, then also from the U.S. Department of Education. This department houses the Wisconsin Dwight D. Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Act. Joseph Balsano These grants are not handed or awarded to institutions, but must be applied for by a written proposal. The federal government gives money to the UW-system, but members of a board don't "allocate it to anyone," he stated. Balsano stated grants are competitive and one must propose ideas and goals that address a need or needs to students. That's why Balsano consulted school districts and 'administrations, gathenng ideas before writing his proposal. "You wouldn't want to give away money for anything," he commented. Balsano feels he IS and has been addressing a need - Science Fellows I, and now Science Fellows II and Ill. Balsano said, "What we're doing is quite popular," referring to Science Fellows 1: A program to Improve Science Education in the Elementary School. Other organizations which once criticized Balsano's work are now beginning to model his program The first objective of this two-fold 'strategy is to reduce the teacher's anxiety to teach basic scientific facts, information. and concepts. The following goal is to provide these teachers with materials that will encourage hands-on-science. This will apply practical knowledge to the hands-on- experience that should make learning fun. Children want to do things. they have a short- attention span. "Lectures are no-no," he said. "The whole idea [of this program] is to ge more science taught." and h sees this as the way t accomplish it. by Brian Matsen News Writer Starting immediately, you'd be wrong if you referred to the building that houses the library, Main Place, and a number of administrative offices as The Wyllie Library Learning Center. Chancellor Eleanor J. Smith explained that a name change from the Wyllie Library Learning Center (WLLC) to Wyllie Hall is part of an overall project. Smith said the signs on campus are "a little piece of the project." Assistant Chancellor William W. Streeter, who works with administration and fiscal affairs, is responsible for exploring the ideas of where to post new signs on 1- 94, highways, and local roads around the community. He's working with an outside consultant to map out the best locations for these new signs. The Chancellor wants the university to be user-friendly, and she sees the simplification of Wyllie Library Learning Center to Wyllie Hall-as a good beginning for the college and the community. The name change is to help establish consistency with the other three halls (Molinaro, Greenquist, and Tallent), and to help prevent further confusion about what services are located in that facility. In the former Wyllie Library Learning Center, keying in on the word "library", one could mistake the building as just where the library is, and if he or she is looking for a certain room, he or she might assume that it would be in the library. "It assumes that everything is in the library." said the Chancellor. She wants students, faculty. and guests to be able to find the appropriate rooms and services without hassles. Again, she wants Wyllie Hall to be user-friendly. Harriet Wyllie, widow to founding Chancellor Irvin G. Wyllie, did not mind the name- change and said, ''I'm just glad they're keeping the [Wyllie] name." Originally, the university was going to name the building "Wy llie Center," which Mrs. Wyllie wishes they would have kept. The building was named Wyllie Library Learning Center in 1972 after Chancellor Wyllie who died in October of 1974. Racism lecture Jan.31 "Campus Racism Today: Blueprint for Uprooting Discrimination in America's College" will be discussed by political activist and historian Manning Marable during a free lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the UW- Parkside Union, located at the far north end of the main campus complex. The lecture is sponsored by the university's Black History Month Committee and the Parkside Activities Board. Marable is professor of history and political science and director Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies. He is the author of several books including "Beyond Black and White: Historical and Political Essays," "African-American Studies: Critical Perspectives of the Black Experience" and "Race, Reform and Rebellion: The second Reconstruction in Black America." Marable also is author of the syndicated newspaper column "Along the Color Line," published in more than 250 newspapers and broadcast by approximately 60 radio stations. Extended Shuttle Bus Hours The University Police and public safety is conducting a survey to determine if there is a need and interest to extend the hours of service of the Shuttle Bus. It was suggested by the Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force that the Shuttle Bus extend operation to 10:30 pm. This service would be one of three Escort Services available. on the Parkside Campus during the evening hours. The University Police provides escorts as well as the Campus Safewalk Program. A questionnaire has been provided to canvas the University population- students, faculty, and staff. The questions range for usage of the shuttle bus, usage of parking lots, and selected methods of paying for this extended shuttle bus service. • Input from the University population is greatly needed so UPPS may provide the services that are not only needed, but desired by those who UPPS serves.
