Evaluations are looked at when a teacher is up for a raise, promotion, or tenure. The Attorney General has ruled that it is legal for students to have access to teacher evaluations. Lisa Kornetsky has been dealing with this issue since the beginning. The committee she helped put together is called The Student Course Information Pilot Project. This pilot project will be tested in four departments at the end ofthe semester. When asked what these four departments will do, Kornetsky said, "Each department will hand out EffectiveJanuary 1, 1995, the State of Wisconsin will ban the burial of recyclable materials in landfills. The Wisconsin Recycling Law requires all individuals and institutions in the state of Wisconsin to recycle. It provides a prioritized list of waste management options. Recycling is the third option, behind reducing and reusing. UW-Parkside is attempting to comply with the state law as follows. Presently there are 24 recycling stations in the public areas around campus. Each station consists of three bins: one for paper, one for commingled material (glass, plastic, and metal), and one for waste. Each recycling bin is labeled to show its purpose. Phase 2 will include the installation of additional units, including refurbished trash receptacles. "My discussion today will look at how national news magazines characterize race relations between blacks, Asian-Americans and Hispanics," Thornton said. When researching using articles published between 1980 and 1992, Thornton and his colleagues found 51 articles from 18 magazines dealing with race relations and the media. Only three of those dealt with race relations specifically. The remainder, he states, had, "ideas and discussions that are embedded in larger discussions." Thornton stated that there is, "an underlying set of agendas that the media was playing with in terms of how they present race relations generally." In support of this, he states, "what the press ignored in LA was that Racejcontinued on·p. 2. Previous studies had been limited to calculating the number of minorities in mass media organizations or Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer MichaelThornton,an associate professor from UW- Madison, spoke at Parkside about his research into how national news magazines portray race relationships among minorities. The December 1st lecture was , sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs with funding from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. In his presentation, Thornton theorizes that "we primarily get our understanding about race and race relations from the mass medias." However, when searching for evidence he states that he discovered, "there are no studies looking at how mass media influences the nature of our understanding of race relations. In other words, how groups of people get along together." There will be a Tree of Hope displayed in the alcove next to the Women's Center Dec. 5 through finals. The tree is to remind us of the meaning ofthe holiday season, and we hope that everyone will take a few moments out of their busy schedules to remember the less fortunate by bringing in non-perishable food items. Proceeds will be donated to the Shalom Center, the battered women/children's shelter in Racine. The Paper Chain Project is designed to raise money for both donees. Michael Thornton looking at what stereotypes a single minority group presented on television. This prompted Thornton and his colleagues to begin their own study of race relations. Because of the confusion which lies in the language, Snyder said that "we shouldn't endorse a policy that we don't understand." He had no problem of having the policy put into effect if Sexual Harassment Committee which asked, "Pursuant to providing 'clear direction ... about professional risks associated with [such] relations', will you clarify 2c in the Statement on Consensual Relationships?" The statement that he is concerned with reads, "the individual in power in the relationship will bear the burden of responsibility." His problem with this phrase was that what "burden of responsibility" meant. He administration. This case stresses the importance of seeking the advice offaculty in decisions made by the administration of a university. Essentially, Snyder sees it as problematic that the faculty wasn't consulted when the decision to accept the policy was made. He states "the administration doesn't run the university in all aspects, [the] faculty has a lot to do with it." In addition, Snyder directed a question to the chair of the 1 separate issues and should be treated as such. If there needs to be any connection between the two issues, Snyder says that there should be a "minimal connection between them." Another problem that Snyder sees associated with the sexual harassment policy is that it was never endorsed by the faculty senate, yet it is on the books and presumably enacted. This raised the issue of Spoto, a suit filed by the faculty senate of UW- Platteville against the Evals, continued from p. 1 often judge their teachers on whether they liked them or not. They could judge their style of teaching. When asked how she treats her surveys, Davis replied that if a student does make a valid and helpful suggestion she would consider a change. She is also encouraged by good comments. Davis feels a little uncomfortable with the idea of these surveys being published. She believes the publishing the information would be acceptable if it was printed in a discreet, non-threatening way. She was concerned, though, with how much information would be revealed. have two sources of feedback that will let them know where they stand with students. Jessica Davis, a German instructor at UW- Parkside, has been teaching for six years. Davis is in favor of students evaluating their teachers because "Students do have a right to express their opinion and have a chance to give the teachers feedback on their performance throughout the semester." She feels that students should try to be fair when making these evaluations. The only problem with evaluations, according to Davis, is that students and these questions will ask, among other things, about teaching style and questions ifthe objectives ofthe teacher were clear." Eventually the results and a syllabus ofthe class will be made available in the library. These results will probably not be available until next year. "Students are qualified to evaluate certain aspects, but they are not best qualified to evaluate other things such as the content of the material," said Kornetsky. Thornton feels that there are a number of important things that the magazines did not discuss regarding face relations. He states, "there's no discussion about economics, there's no discussion [or] very little discussion about racism, there's very little discussion about any of the wider thing while most of the press discussed black and Asian-American relations. Thornton continued by looking at what groups the media described as being involved in racial conflicts. He found mention of blacks, Hispanics and Asian-Americans. He states that, " what the media did, they homogenized each one of those groups." Thornton found the term black interchanged for Haitian, West Indian, African and Latin. He said Hispanics played a very important role in terms of what happened. One example ofthis is that most of the people arrested in LA were Hispanic. Why didn't the press make a big deal of that?
