1st District Congressional Debate
Here at Parkside
by Tabitha Brown
Staff Writer
Before an assembly of about
150 people, Peter W. Barca,
Edward J. Kozak, and Mark
W. Neumann exchanged
charges t Wednesday, Oct. 19
in Parkside's Union Cinema.
The candidates disagreed
about the role of government.
Neumann said that the
government's health care
plan was intrusive and that
individuals should fund their
own primary care. Barca said
that he helped cut the deficit
in his first two years in office.
Kozak said that the
government makes too much
money off people. This debate,
sponsored by the Parkside
Student Government
Association (PSGA) and the
Kenosha League ofWomen
Voters, was moderated by
Paul Kern, Program Director
for WLIP Radio.
In his opening remarks,
Democratic incumbent Peter
Barca stated that government
should be close to the people
and that there is a need to cut
wasteful spending. He further
stated that Congress should
"get the agenda items from
the people of Wisconsin and
bring them back to
Washington D.C."
Libertarian Edward Kozak,
in his opening remarks,
stated that "the Democrats
and Republicans are doing a
lousy job." He also felt that
the people were victims of the
government and that the
government was "out of
control."
Mark Neumann, the
Republican candidate, opened
with the declaration that item
number Doe in his contract
with the people ofWisconsin
calls for the Balanced Budget
Amendment. This same
contract sees the need for
term limits, a legitimate
crime bill, and a repeal ofthe
Senior Citizen tax increase.
He also spoke of the problem
that he sees with the debt
and deficit.
Neumann called for a
balanced budget amendment
that would include a line item
veto. Barca reflected on his
leading the efforts to cut the
nation's deficit. He also stated

Volunteer of the Week
The Career Center selects
"Volunteers of the Week" based on
their altruistic attitudes, the amount
of time shared.within the
community, and the positive impact
their service has made in the lives of
others. This week's volunteer is
Michael Haun.
In January 1994 Michael Havn
was placed with the Racine Literacy
Council to be trained as a tutor for
illiterate adults. Mike is a senior
majoring in English and was eager
to share his knowledge of English
skills with someone who was not so
lucky. Twenty-seven million
American adults cannot read or
write and the numbers increase by
2.5 million each year. Mike is now
tutoring his second student, meeting
weekly as his student is preparing to
pass the GED test.
Mike enjoys being helpful.
"Volunteering gives me the
opportunity to meet interesting
people," he said.
"I am thinking more seriously about
a teaching career. I really enjoy
talking to people."
Gloria Stephanson, a Literacy
not dismiss the disabled for "you
never know what a person can become
with the knowledge they obtain at the
university.
Kirby discussed how classroom
adjustments are made on an
individual student basis: these
changes may include taped textbooks,
note-takers and extended times. It is
the responsibility of the student to
have their disability documented with
Kirby's office, to request the
appropriate accommodations and to
keep an open and continuing
discussion with their instructor.
Peterson and Kirby see the mission
ofthe university as one of preparation
of the student for employment and
. believe that the ADA can be of
assistance in making this goal more
feasible. Of the 200 disclosed students
with disabilities at the University of
Wisconsin-Parks ide, success stories
abound. This has been in part due to
the faculty and staff, who are, on the
whole, caring and more than willing
to assist however and whenever they
can whether the students are abled or

Feature Writer
Gabriela Cambiasso,
Parkside's newest Spanish
lecturer, came to Parkside
last August (1994.)
Cambiassois originally from
BuenosAires, Argentina. She
attended the state university
there, traveling to the
UnitedStates in 1992.
Cambiasso obtained her
Master's Degree in Hispanic
Studies in Spanish Literature
and Linguistics from the
University of Illinois.
Cambiasso's hobby is
reading. Cambiasso said, "I
love to read, which helps me
in my career." Besides
reading, she enjoys sports. In
Argentina, Cambiasso was in
a Field Hockey league. Since

her arrival in the United
States, she hasn't been able
to find a team to play hockey
with. In Chicago, she played
Soccer.
Cambiasso describes the
people at Parkside as being
different from the other types
of people she has known in
other places. "There are
different people here. It's
interesting. It's different from
a regular university or
school", Cambiasso stated.
One thing she likes the most
about Parkside is the scenery.
"I love the view from my
office",Cambiasso said as she
glanced out ofthe window.
One ofthe things
Cambiasso misses, however,
about Argentina is the food.
"The ice cream is definitely
better," Cambiasso said, "the
food there is different. We
cook things differently.
Perhaps not better or worse,
but different." Another thing
she misses sometimes is her
friends back in Argentina.
Teaching at Parkside for a
few years, and perhaps a PhD
are Cambiasso's future plans.
However, she hasn't figured
out what area she wants to
specialize in.
Cambiasso summed
everything up by saying, "I'm
happy here. I'm having a good
time."

OC spray is another option
in self defense that is now
available to adults in
Wisconsin, but it is not a
guarantee that you will not
be assaulted. Like any other
self defense product, pepper
spray has limitations.
Ifthe canister is not your
hand and ready for use, it
should not be an option to
consider. Digging around in a
purse tor the canister or
attempting to get it out of a
pouch carrier will use up
valuable escape time. Wind,
rain, and humid conditions
can also alter the
effectiveness of the product.
The University Police and
Public Safety Department
recommends that if you are
going to carry OC or are
undecided about OC that you
attend personal protection
awareness training and/or
Oleoresin of Capsicum
training.
Although it is legal to
possess OC in Wisconsin,
problems have arisen because
not all vendors of OC are
selling products which
conform to the Wisconsin
State Statutes. If you have
already purchased OC, you
can contact a University
Police Officer to have your
canister inspected to see ifit
meets Wisconsin's
requirements.
Students, faculty, and staff
who are interested in
personal protection training
for civilians should contact
the University Police and
Public Safety Department to
leave their name and a
telephone number where they
can be contacted. Ifthere is
enough interest, programs
will be offered and those on

One Liberal's Opinion
by Barb Churchill
Ranger Columnist
Apathy, PSGA, elections,
and you. What does all this
have in common, you ask?
Well, plenty, ifwhat I saw
last week was any judge. This
is Barb Churchill, your
friendly liberal columnist
reporting (I put this in only
because my name was
omitted last week from my
column).
The PSGA elections were
held on the 19th and 20th of
October. Remember how I
reminded you of when they
were so everyone could vote??
Well,l saw very, v-e-r-y few
people voting while I was
there. In fact, while I voted, I
only saw one other person
vote. 1 stayed an extra fifteen
minutes, talking with a friend
who was working at the
election table, just to see if
anyone else was voting. He
told me that it had been a
pretty uneventful day for
voters.
This smacks of apathy to
me. I point this fact out, while
being reminded ofthe fact
that several people won who
weren't even running. Infact,
my brother (Jim
Hendrickson, Managing
Editor of The Ranger News to
you) won the PUAB election,
for which he wasn't even
running. He got all of four
votes, and NO, HE DIDN'T
VOTE FOR HIMSELF.
(Man. Ed. Note: Thanks,
Barb.)
Apathy has no place at
Parkside. What does this say,
when everyone and their
brother says, "PSGA is
corrupt, wasteful, and doesn't
do anything for the students,"
yet they don't vote?? Itshows
that people wonld rather
complain than take action.
Granted, many times when a
person votes it doesn't seem
to matter at all. But, with
several elective offices being
won by people who weren't
even running, and others
Observations
At Random
C.J. Nelson
Ranger Columnist
l
Here are a few observations
that I have about current
happenings political, cultural
and otherwise. Taken
together I hope they make an
entertaining column.
In the last two weeks I have
had seen a retrospective on
RoyRogers and watched
Gene Kelly dance with Mitzi
Gaynor in the movie Les
Girls. It occurs to me that we
as a society are not much
better off culturally than we
were when I was a boy.
Remembering how Roy
Rogers used to take his
responsibilities to his fans
seriously is a far cry from the
way popular figures treat
there fans now. Perhaps in
this era of antiheroes a hero
who gets the bad guy is
needed.
Watching the grace and
,
,
r
I
elegance of Gene Kelly
dancing with Mitzi Gaynor to
me illustrates why dance may
be fun to observe. I can not
think of anyone who shows
such grace and fluidity of
movements in today's
entertainment.
Since I am on the subject of
entertainment. I watch
reruns of Dick Van Dyke. He
is funny, Roseanne is just
plain gross. I listen to the
music of the 5th Dimension or
the Letterman or (god forbid)
Barry Manilow and Elton
John. Today the popular
music seems to be about an
all encompassing rage in
society. How performers like
Snoop Doggy Dog, Hammer
or Guns and Roses merits any
respect is beyond me.
I notice that sports as we
knew it will never be the
same. Baseball and hockey
are in labor disputes, and
basketball will be shortly.

To the Editor:
A poster for the Single
Parents' Advocacy Group was
recently defaced. Since
someone wasn't brave enough
to put his/her name with the
comments, we would like to
address this to any student
who may have misconceptions
about our group.
Single Parents' Advocacy
was formed in the spring of
1994 to provide mutual
support and information
I·
resources to parents at
Parkside. We work to find
positive solutions to common
problems, ranging from
finding quality child care to
dealing with other parents to
managing extremely Iimited
time and finances. Many
single parents have paying
jobs and we are taking
anywhere from 11 to 18
credits, in addition to
devoting the majority of our
time and efforts to caring for
our children. We are
being won by votes in the
double digits, this shows that
people really don't care all
that much. And that is very
sad.
One of my favorite books,
Borders of Infinity by Lois
McMaster Bujold, says it
best. 'Now, there's this about
cynicism ...it's the universe's
most supine moral position.
Real comfortable. If nothing
can be done, then you're not
some kind of(expletive
deleted) for not doing it, and
you can lie there and stink to
yourself in perfect peace.'
This attitude has no place
here. Cynicism and apathy
are very comfortable, aren't
they? Senator Adair-Nichols
had it right when she said
that more students should get
involved. At least by voting,
you can state your views on
how the current administration
is running things.
The only thing that happened
out of this election was that
Chris Bossert was voted out
as Senator. I guess that this
Perhaps this is good thing.
Maybe we as a nation has put
sports into a perspective it
was never meant to occupy.
Sports is supposed to be for
enjoyment and recreation. I
used to love to follow baseball
and pro football. Not any
more. Nowadays 1would
sooner read a book. Come to
think of it, if we all did more
reading and wondering we
might be better off as a
nation.
The gun ban under
consideration in Kenosha
should be approved. If one life
is saved it is worth it. The
Second Amendment means
hunting weapons not
anything that can go bang.
If it looks like a duck,
quacks like a duck and walks
like a duck, it's a duck. The
prior statement applies to
Peter Barca. Sorry Peter but
you did vote in favor of an
energy tax hike along with a
hardworking, responsible
people who are solo parenting
as a result of circumstances
or by our own choice.
If you have any questions or
comments, feel free to leave a
message in our box in the
SOC office.
Michelle Gabor
Melinda K. Cunningham
Jennifer Mitchell
Kim M. Fischer
Elizabeth Grover
shows that his conduct as
previously reported by the
Ranger News was
unacceptable to the majority
. of students.
I asked the one other
student why he voted in the
PSGA election. He looked at
me as ifI were insane. 'Well,
we should be interested in
what goes on here at
Parkside. That is the only
way things important to us,
like lowering tuition or at
least keeping it the same
price, making sure faculty
teach and not attend grad
school' (and, believe it or not,
this really happened at
UWM) 'and make our voices
be heard.' I agree.
The apathy shown by the
students to the PSGA defies
analysis. Itbegs me to ask
the question, "Does anyone
really care out there?" And,
worse yet, the state elections
are coming up quickly. With
the apathetic, non-caring
cynical arrogance ofthe
students that was shown by
Social Security tax hike. They
were both included in the
President's budget bill oflast
year and you voted yes.
Speaking of that budget
plan. In theory the Earned
Income Tax Credit should
have applied to low income
people (of which I am
presently one). In fact neither
myself nor anybody I know
received a tax break of any
kind last year, but we sure
got to pay em.
Now I will rap the knuckles
of the Republicans. Guys, you
can't cut taxes, raise defense
spending and still balance the
budget. It did not work in the
eighties and won't work now.
Additionally this continuous
talk about never raising taxes
or requiring a super majority
of some sort to approve tax
hikes is short sighted and bad
governance. Some day there
is going to be something that
Republicans want to pay for.
5
the lack of voters in the
PSGA election, can anyone
really tell me ifpeople will
vote in the state election?
There are some very
important choices to be made
in this election. The problem
is, THEY CAN'T BE MADE
BY PEOPLE WHO DON'T
VOTE!!!!!
I'd like to hear some
feedback on this, folks.
Cynicism is the most common
and least effective moral
position in the universe, and
apathy is a notion fostered by
our own seeming impotence
in the flailings oflife. It must
be fought, every single day,
by people who do care and
can show people that they do
Please, write in to The
Ranger News and express
your position. It is time to
hear your voices in this. I
would really like to know if
anyone else hates arrogance,
cynicism, and apathy as
much as I do. And remember,

President Clinton is at least
putting his money where his
mouth is when it comes to
financial aid for students. His
revamping of the student
funding programs will make
loans easier to pay back and
to obtain. The result should
be more people gaining access
to funding for higher
education or job retraining.
That's all for now. Next
week I will fearlessly predict
the outcome ofthe elections,

Halloween Is
by Barb Churchill
Ranger Columnist
For Halloween, I decided to
write about a great injustice
on the UW-Madison campus.
Namely, this is the complete
suppression of the Halloween
party that used to be famous
in the 1970s and 1980s.
Donna Shalala, while
chancellor of the UW System,
put a stop to this important
institution. She thought that
drinking, rowdiness, and
danger to property should be
eliminated, and she thought
that these negatives were all
• • •
that the Halloween party was
about.
Granted, the Halloween
party was rowdy. I remember
many people, in costume,
being taken to detox because
they had passed out in the
middle ofthe road, and many
others throwing beer bottles
on State Street in Madison
while I was there. It was a
great tension reliever for the
students. The first midterm
exams had been over for a
few weeks, but the students
felt the stress and needed to
wind down. The Halloween
party worked well for this
purpose.
6
The Halloween party had
many other things besides
drunken rowdy behavior. For
instance, many restaurants
gave out free food and drink
samples, and many others
had extended hours for
shoppers. The library was
open, but with very few
people. (Most of the
employees were partying.) All
the dorms had parties going,
without beer or other
intoxicants I may add, which
gave the non-drinker a
partying alternative. The
frats all had parties, some
with costumes. Literally, the
whole town was partying.
This was a nationally known
event, folks.
Donna Shalala thought that
tradition was less important
than putting a stop to
vandalism. All of the previous
chancellors thought
otherwise. Unfortunately, the
chancellors since Ms. Shalala
have not reinstituted this fine
event. Halloween should be
used as a time to relieve some
pressure from school, work
(which many of us have to do
even while at school to
survive from day to day), and
life in general. Itis time to
reinstitute the Halloween

I strolled into Toys-R-Us
during the beginning of
October - ironically, a
children's toy store - to be
greeted by a macabre of death
and mutilation. In aghast, I
walked up to the service
counter and asked why those
deformed masks, pitch forks,
and axes were there. She
simply srateu, "Tt"S
• Halloween."
The Ranger ran this article
last year, but the message is
so powerful, that it's worth
reading again.
To millions of youngsters
across the nation, and adults,
Halloween has been a time to
experience scary fun. If only
those people could realize
Halloween's emphasis on
death and decay, and the
children who are violently
abused and sometimes killed
on that night, they would see
an entirely darker and
horrifying portrait of this
famed holiday.
Glenn Hobbs, a former
Satanist, who was "blessed"
to be a sacrificer J can
illustrate the truth of the
holiday's potential. On
Halloween night, he was
driven off to somewhere in a
secluded area with his
sacrifice, Becky - both of
them drugged. A13they gained
consciousness, peopie araggea
the girl of out the van as she
screamed and yelled. Before
Glenn could react, the van's
door shut. All he could hear
was a low murmuringchanting.
He knew the ritual was
going on. Hobbs had been
sexually abusing Becky since
the end of September, as the
Marriage of the Beast ritual
commanded. They were
placed in a shack with animal
bones everywhere, wearing
no clothes. The abuse was
very concentrated as
Halloween approached.
Finally a woman took
Hobbs out of the van. He saw
the high priest sexually abuse
Becky as she lied naked on an
alter; arms and feet spread
out and bound with ropes.
Hobbs saw the high priest cut
open the sacrificial animal
over her, then saw the
animal's blood mix with
Becky's into a cup as the high
priest cut ner aruues ana
wrists. The members present
drank her blood. Without
warning, Hobbs next saw the
high priest plunge the
sacrificial dagger into Becky's
chest. Glenn Hobbs painfully
remembers this event every
Halloween. He dated that
this is something that is
happening every Halloween;
it's not just an isolated event.

the world who are losing their
lives during Halloween night,

by Barb Churchill
Ranger Columnist
Hello out there, all you avid
Ranger News readers.
Welcome to my third article
of the week. This article was
prompted by the story in
People magazine this week
(10/31/94) about the over-40
individuals who went back to
school and decided to make
their dreams corne true. In
the true spirit of Halloween,
which of course is all about
giving, I wish to give praise to
these people and point out
their remarkable
accomplishments.
The first person, Mona
Cohn, is 48 years old and was
recently named Homecoming
Queen at the University of
Louisville. The second
person, Chuck Roseberry, is
46 and recently made his
school's football team
(Kutztown University in PAl.
Both of these individuals
overcame numerous
stumbling blocks over many
years, enrolled in college as
adult students, and both are
succeeding in their chosen
fields. Ms. Cohn, a criminal
justice major, carries a 4.0
average, and Mr. Roseberry
(a psych major) a 3.0 despite
the fact that he is dyslexic.
This goes to prove that no
one is ever too old to do
whatever it is that they truly
want to do. In popular
sports, look at Joe Montana.
Everyone, including his old
team the San Francisco
4gers, had written him off.
But, he found a new team,
the Kansas City Chiefs, and
he will take them to the
playoffs. No one believed in
Joe Montana last year, except
for himself and perhaps his
wife. It would have been easy
door to door, asking for
candy. It's a big celebration
for us. It's quite ironic how
one group of people are
thinking it's fun, and another
group of people are taking
human lives. There seems to
be this wall, and nobody
wants to face the fact of
what's going on."
People who say that these
cults do not exist today are
mis-informed. A surviving
coven ill eomersetsmre,
England remains active.
You'll find Druids meeting at
Stonehenge this Halloween,
continuing their grotesque
sacrifices (although, they
state that they just kill
animals). "Why worry," you
may ask yourself. "That's
happening in another
country." That is true, but
here in Wisconsin you'll find
the Milwaukee witches and
other pagans preaching their
doctrine this and every
Halloween. Pagans hide
party at Madison, and while
we're at it, let's get rid of the
Young Republicans that seem
to be running the place. Let's
face it, school is not just
about books and book
learning. It is also about
meeting new people and
being put into new situations,
some that were never thought
possible before corning to
college. The Halloween party
was an excellent example of
seeing life at its best (and
worst). Also, it would give all
of us a good excuse to go to
Madison and join in the fun.
behind the titles of doctors,
construction workers, and
soap opera stars alike. "Since
I've been practicing the craft,
there has been a great revival
[for paganism]; stated
Patricia, a Wiccan high
priest.
Why is it that we are
disgusted by what we see on
the evening news - murder,
rape, and molestation - but
one day out of the year, we as
a nation em Drace It!' wouin
you let your child dress up
like mass murderer, Ted
Bundy? Ifthe answer is "no;
then why approve of dressing
them up as a witch, Vlad the
Impaler (Dracula), or any
other perverted, ungodly and
demonic character? Get to
know and realize the true
traditions that people
promote and practice
"harmlessly" every October
31st, or the Sunday before -
if not for you, for your
children.
for him to say that he had
made enough money and
garnered enough fame.
Instead, he chose the tougher
course, choosing to put
himself on the line one more
time to prove that he still had
what it takes to play in the
NFL.
May I share a little of my
own experience? Last year,
when I re-entered school after
a four year absence I thought
that I was too old and that it
was too late for me to finish
my music degree. I also
thought that it was too late to
go to graduate school, and
become a college music
teacher. Literally, this was a
dream I'd had since I was 14
years old. I thought it was
too late for me. However,
thanks to some excellent
encouragement from the
music faculty here (namely
Jim McKeever, Tim Bell, and
Mark Eichner) I no longer
feel that way. I may be an
older student, but I sure as
hell am not
old.
So, for
Halloween, I
urge all
traditional
students (18-
22) to get to
know all the
non-trads out
there (adult
re-entering
students).
They just may
surprise you.
Look at these
individuals,
and be
amazed.
Then, use
them as
examples. To
quote the late
Jim Valvano,
'never give up. Never, ever
give up.'
"

Setting all my fears aside, I
would consider this an
average haunted barn (taking
into consideration what I've
heard about other haunted
places). It seemed to have all
the requirements of a
haunted house: creepylooking
monsters, gross death
scenes, loud chainsaw noises,
cackling laughs, a blaring
siren sound, a laser light, and
stringy stuff suspended from
the ceiling dancing on our
heads. Both my sister and I
were scared out of our skin,
but the guy we were with
didn't have any problem going
through it.
Overall, Farmer Brown's
Haunted Barn was a pretty
exciting and entertaining
event. I suggest that anyone
who is looking for a haunted
house of some sort should
give this one a try. There will
probably be instances where
you will jump, be frightened,
and maybe even scream
(probably not as many times
as I did though). Iknow it
certainly couldn't be dull to
anyone - not even to someone
who is use to haunted houses.
By the way, it took us five
minutes to get through it, but
that depends on who fast you
are moving. Also, just to let
you know, the walls are
padded on the barn - most
likely for people franticly
pushing other people out of
the way so they can get out as
fast as possible (my friend
was unintentionally
discovered the padded walls
once or twice).
about the excursion through
the Haunted Barn ....
First of all, one of the
witches led us to the
beginning of the barn and
pointed us in the right
direction to start, and sent us
off on our own. We started
scooting along the path, not
being able to see anything
because it was so dark. All of
a sudden, a tiny light turned
on revealing a fake monster
cutting up a fake corpse.
Through the course ofthe
Haunted Barn, there were
other scenes like this. I could
handle this sort of stuff, but it
didn't stay that calm all the
time. There were real people
to spice things up a bit. They
seemed to pop out of nowhere
with hateful laughs,
unpleasant threats, and
really homely faces. Needless
to say, this didn't really sit
well with me, and I wanted
out ofthere right away - but
we weren't able to move very
fast because we couldn't see
which way to turn.
Some ofthe monsters
wouldn't leave us alone. They
.trailed behind us, and Iwas
stuck at the end (but not by
choice - my sister claimed the
middle position as her own
before we even got there).
Finally, after what seemed to
be forever, Isaw a little
moonlight shining from
outside on the wall. I couldn't
get out of there fast enough, it
seemed, because I had to
push everyone aside to get by
and run out ofthe door first
(where I was greeted be
another monster trying to
by Dawn Apostoli
Are you looking for
something to do, or someplace
to go on Halloween? I have a
perfect suggestion for you -
that is if you don't mind
walking through pitch black,
narrow corridors and meeting
up with some strange looking
inhabitants. It you think this
sounds fun or interesting,
then you should go to
"Farmer Brown's Totally
Haunted Barn." It costs $5 a
person, and is located on
Highway 50. It's a large farm
on the right side ofthe road
(going west) way out in the
county, and is covered with
Halloween decorations, a few
witches roaming around,
ghostlike sounds coming out
ofthe barn, and it's drowning
in pumpkins! It is hard to
miss, just keep traveling west
on Highway 50 (quite a ways
past 1-94) and you will
eventually come to it.
I had my doubts about
going to the Haunted Barn
because I'm not your usual
"haunted barn participator."
I have only been in a couple
haunted houses before, and
they were just "kiddie
houses," so I was hesitant
about embarking on a journey
through the Haunted Barn
this big, but the people I was
with fmally convinced me to
go through with it. Let me
inform you of something
though - seeing as how I am
very moderately frightening
to to me will most likely will
be a minor detail to you. With
this in mind, let me tell you
1[alts from the Q:rytic
The last three listed were also
in Reservoir Dogs. Pulp does
not really have a stable plot
because it jumps all over time
and space, but once it all
connects, the viewer realizes
the big picture. I guess we
could say that the movie is
centered around two hit men,
their boss, and the thorns in
their sides.
The only things needed to
see Pulp Fiction are patience
and the ability to cringe a bit.
Like we said, it is a hard-core
movie with the language and
violence, but you just have to
take a big gulp and swallow
it. At first it was yellow, but
Bill and I saw the light and
give it a green. So go on, have
a happy Halloween, and hold
on to your fangs for our
Interview review. On the way
to the theater, watch out for
security guards named Zed
who wear hoop earrings.
if you keep your ears and eyes
open, it picks up at light
speed. To sum up, Quentin
Tarantino, in my mind, leaves
you in suspense with every
word and move, he is not
afraid of blood, and his style
is apart from any other.
Pulp Fiction gives us an
all-star cast, so there's no
need to worry about acting.
John Travolta is resurrected
to prove his acting ability,
and he does it well. There are
no real main characters in
this movie, but Travolta,
Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Color
of Night, Moonlighting) and
Samuel L. Jackson (Jurassic
Park, Loaded Weapon 1)
appear the most, so they
could be considered he main
co-stars. The less seen costars
consist of Urna
Thurman, Julia Sweeney,
Quentin Tarantino, Frank
Whaley, Eric Stoltz, Rosanna
Arquette, Harvey Keitel, Tim
Roth, and Steve Buscemio.
by Paul Danninger
and Bill Zasoba
Two guys who just love

Today, we speak of Pulp
Fiction. It is a movie that is
hard-core and slow at the
start. Fellow readers, if you
do not approve of these
aspects, throw this article
away J because we do approve.
Two words ... Quentin and
Tarantino. These would be
the first and last names of a
genius director. I would have
to say that I am quite a fan
after Reservoir Dogs, and this
movie. Bill did not like Dogs,
but Pulp Fiction brought out
the "Quentin" in him. Bill, to
be honest, definitely wanted
it to end within the first hour.
I do predict that you readers
will feel the same. But have
patience, my friends, and you,
just like Bill, will be greatly
rewarded. This is Tarantino's
style. He starts out slow, but

The
Poetry
Dude
Hey poetry fiends! I was able to make it two weeks in a
row with the column this week. Well, I have to say that I
wish more was turned in, but I won't complain. The
poem for this week is a really good one. I have liked all
the poems submitted so far (all 3 of them!)
I said I wouldn't complain though. I will publish
something if you waot it to be aoonymous. I hope this
isn't holding aoybody back. Well, enough about that. On
to this week's poem. It's by a student named Mike
Waters, aod it's titled "WINDOW". So...without further
hesitation, here it is.
WINDOW
I am clear and truthful.
I see only what the beholder sees.
I don't interpret, or philosophize.
I am but only a window.
Now the window is foggy.
It no longer is clear, and truthful,
But unclear and deceptive.
It now interprets and philosophizes.
But now it's wiped clean.
I feel guilty and sinful.
I ask for forgiveness, will you please forgive me?
I am but only an onlooker.
-Michael Waters
Well after some thought, I think I see what Mikejs
trying to say. My interpretation is that he's pointing out
that people are not always perfect aod sometimes stray
too far aod make judgements about others. I think he's
trying to say this especially by calling himself ao
"onlooker." I believe in realizing people are humao. It's

25 aod is subsequently
enthused to share the
delightful experience therein.
The strength of this
particular play is in character
portrayal. Though the plot is
substaotial aod moves the
play, it is the diversity of
characters, their interaction
aod theatrical co-dependency
that provides the superb
entertaining experience.
These characters are expertly
played by the current UWParkside
cast.
The delightful melodrama
sports a particularly brilliaot
performaoce by Chris Harder
in the role ofthe Vagabond.
Harder's fluency, flair, aod
lovability provides the engine

aod you could follow him
around all day aod share in

Prefabricated No-permit Excuse
We at the Ranger have been made aware of numerous occasions where students
and staff have either "misplaced" their parking permit or haven't yet bought a permit.
In consequence, they have been ticketed by UW-Parkside Police.
The Ranger is making available a "clip and save" excuse that may (or may not)
cause a sympathetic officer to leave your permitless car unticketed.
Simply cut out the form below, check the box ofthe excuse that best explains
your situation, and put it on your dashboard.

Haines's success is no big

Haines Leads Parkside to a First
Place Finish
by Tracey Pope
This past weekend the
women's cross country team
competed in the Olivet
Nazarene Great Midwest
Classic and carne home with a
first place trophy. Parkside
scored only 20 points to come
out ahead in the 15 school
field. Olivet took second with
50 points and UW-Green Bay
took third with 85 points.
Amy Haines led the Lady
Rangers by winning the race
with a time of 18:47. Also
finishing in the top five were
Tracey Pope, 2nd in 18:52;
Valerie Niese, 4th in 19:14;
Michelle Melcher, 5th in
19:32 and Lisa Lewis, 8th in
19:41. These ladies ran in the
top seven last week and this
week so that means they have
secured their spot in the top
seven to run Nationals. There
will have to be a run offfor
the last two spots.
"The times were a little
slower this week because of
the rough footing on the
course." commented Coach De
Witt.
Because of Parkside's large
team, they also ran a B
squad. Catherine Rice led the
team with a 37th place finish.
The B team finished ninth
with 230 points.
This is the second race that
Parkside has won this year.
Their record to this date is
90-8. Parkside has a chance
to better that record even
more this weekend at the
University of Chicago meet.
Don't forget that Parkside has
two more home meets:
November 5th (NAIA
Regionals) and November
19th (NAIA Nationals).

Men's CrossCountry Takes 7th at Kankakee
by AI Heppner
Itwas a beautiful,
picturesque day at the
Kankakee Invitational and
the Rangers came through
with some oftheir best times
ofthe year. Although the
course was uneven and full of
turns, the top 5 was under
27:50 for the first time this
season. Jesse Decker led the
team with a 14th place finish
(26:48).
"This is the first time we
ran together as a team,"
commented Greg Garland.
The men literally ran
together as the top five were
all within a minute of each
other,
The Running Rangers
finished seventh out of 24
teams, but Assistant Coach
Mike Lunow added, "We could
of had fourth; we were only
thirty points away."
Now is a great time for the
team to be clicking as they
head into the championship
part of the season. Parkside
will either run at NAIA
Regionals or NCAA II
Regionals in two weeks. "We
hope that we ran well enough
to get a shot at nationals,"
said Andy Samow.
Brian Borkowski, who ran a

ball on offense. Look for a
low-scoring defensive
battle.
Green Bay over Chicago:
Quarterback controversy
runs rampid in this one.
Farve vs. Brunnell for
G.B., and Kramer V8.
Walsh for Chicago, Both
teams are in trouble on
offense, but the Packers
defense is one of the best
in the league and should
be the difference.
Last Week: 5-0
Season: 16-9
Hepp's Hype Picks
by AI Heppner
Dallas over Cincinnati: If Dallas
doesn't start Troy Aikman, then the
Bengals maybe able to keep it close.
They played a good first half of
football against the Browns and "Big
Daddy" finally got his first sack. But
the chances of the Bengal's first win
here are dismal.
Philadelphia over Washington: Gus
Frerotte steps into the spotlight as
the Redskin's QB after an impressive
debut win against the Colts. But hell
be in over his head against the
strong Eagles defense.
San Diego over Seattle: Even ifStan
Humphries can't start on Sunday,
the Chargers are still good enough to
beat the Seahawks. Charger Kicker
John Carney should make the pro
bowl if his leg doesn't fall off. The
Bolts would still be undefeated if
they could have punched it into the
endzoue last weekend. Three teams
in the NFC would beat the Chargers
in the Super Bowl (Dallas, S.F., and
Philadelphia).
Pittsburgh over Arizona: Bam
Morris is getting the job done for the
Steelers (146 yards vs. Giants) and
he should make the difference in this
low scoring affair. How much of a
reward do you think Buddy offered to
the player who could take out Troy
Aikm an.?
Chicago over Green Bay: The Bears
gave one away to the Lions last week
after giving their offense and special
teams each gave up a touchdown.
The Packers defense was awesome
against Minnesota, but the Bears "D"
is coming off their best game of the
season. The bottom line is that the
Packers offense is worse. Don't look
for a lot of points in this one.
