Lectures

in the Arts
Friday,
October
7, Bill T.
Jones,
dance
choreographer,
gave
a lecture
on censorship
ofthe arts.
Jones
started
the
lecture
by asking
the
audience
to answer
several
questions
in their
heads
and
then
lectured
on his answer
tothe questions.
His
questions
were: What
is the
place
ofart in your
life?
Is it
essential?
Does
art define
a
culture?
What
do you think
of
public
funds
for the arts?
What
should
public
funds

for?What
should
public
funds
not pay for? What
are the
responsibilities

Whoreceive

Are
there
limits
on what
is
suitable
for arts
to engage
in?
Governor
Thompson,
after
announcing
the proposed
budget
cuts,
became
the
target
in a political
mess
regarding
Wisconsin's
Education
System.
Governor
Thompson's
answer
to the
political
pressure
was
to
revoke
his earlier
plan
and
try to state
that
business
was
to return
to
"normal".
But
does
this
mean
that
we have
heard
the last
of the budget
cuts?
Many
in the faculty
do
not
think
so.
Departments
have
held
meetings
to
discuss
the
probability
that,
at the end of
the fiscal
year,
the state
will
once
again
demand
a 5 or 10
percent
budget
cut from
the
Are there
limits
to what
the
public
should
pay for?
What
is risk
taking
in society?
What
is risk
taking
in art?
What
is the investment
in
culture?
Are some
things
we
see and hear
bad for us?
What
is the place
of art in
Jones'
life?
Jones
grew
up in a
family
of migrant
workers
in
upstate
New
York.
Much
of
the history
Jones
learned
came
from
folk
art, stories
and
music.
Jones
told
a story
about
how
a group
a young
people
from
major
cities
took
him
to a play
in Rochester,
New
York.
At the play
there
was a line of
naked
women
and
they
were
passing
a row
of naked
men
through
their
legs,
giving
birth
through
this
huge
Fallopian
tube.
Jones
felt overwhelmed
by the
presentation.
"What
is the
place
of art in my life?
It
uplifted
me."
It
inspired
Jones
to
go to the New
York
State
University
and
become
the artist
he is today.
Is art essential
and why?
Jones
says
it is essential
for
the same
reason
he became
an artist.
Art brings
people'
from
all different
backgrounds
and classes
together
around
a single
concept
that
transcend
politics,
race,
gender,
etc. It
gives
us a way
to sit back
and
look
at our rendition
so we
may
truly
understand
what
it
manner
that
minimizes
the
negative
effects
such
cuts
have
...on the university's
quality
and morale."
Several
sources
within
the staff
and
faculty
of University
of
Wisconsin-Parkside
also
voiced
concern
over previous
meetings
with
the
administration
over
budget
cuts.
It
was
apparent
to
them
that
the administration
was
far less
willing
to restructure
itself
(and
therefore
cut
administration
jobs)
than
it
was
to simply
remove
some
faculty
and
staff
positions
without
regard
to how
it
would
affect
the department's
ability
to maintain
its
academic
curriculum.
With
means
to be human.
Does
art define
a culture?
What
happened
to
a world
that
was
no longer
interested
in exact
duplication
but was
interested
in how.
they
felt?
What
did photography
do to
art when
the world
could
be
duplicated
by a machine?
Only
artists
can redefine
the
difference
between
a
photograph
and how
people
felt.
Jones
used
the example
of the O.J.
Simpson
murder
trial;
why
were
so many
people
so happy
to see the
man
in the white
truck
running
from
the police,
and
how
many
people
were
confused
about
what
in life is
real?
People
couldn't
understand
why
Andy
Warhol
painted
a can of soup
and
called
it art, but people
are watching
the Simpson
trial
like it is a made
for TV
movie.
Jones
says
that
that
is
being
represcient
of the art of
Warhol.
What
does
Jones
think
of
public
funds
for the arts?
"What
do I think
of highways,
hospitals,
public
health?"
asked
Jones.
It has to be paid
for, it's about
our present,
and
our future.
Jones
says
that
money
should
be given
carte
blanche
to artists.
Then
what
is the responsibility
of
the artist?
"To create
the best
work
they
possibly
can."

a 5% cut in

It is felt
that
restructuring
