Every year, the students nominate their favori te teachers and a facul ty panel decides which two nominees are most worthy. The winners are Maria Leavitt, a Lecturer of Modern Languages, and Paul Mohazzabi, an Associate Professor of Physics. Senora Leavitt has been teaching Spanish language and civilization courses at this university for four years. She began her studies in her native Puerto Rico, and graduated with a MA in Spanish from the University of Arizona. After being a secretary in the Army and a bank employee who dealt with automatic tellers, she realized. that teaching was just right for her. With her positive, outgoing personality, "the love of teaching came easily. It waa almost like a religious calling," she said. Some of Senora Leavitt's most memorable experiences teaching here were the two times when she and her Spanish Civilization class went abroad. Visiting Spain she was happy every time her students said, "Oh, I remember learning about this," or "This was the site of ...." To her, it meant that the students didn't just take up space in the lecture hall, but actually absorbed her words about the culture. That is very important to this honored teacher. "Today, the world as we know-it is getting smaller. The more you know in terms of language, the more they let you into their world," she stated. "It is very important to learn' a language, any language. It expands your mind." Leavitt enjoys the recognition that her students have bestowed upon her by nominating her for the award. "It shows me that they care. They, the students, had taken time to write something for me," she said. Students have always been her first priority, "They are everything to me!" she declared. The second winner of the Teaching Excellence Award is Paul Mohazzabi. He has wanted to be a teacher since he was in elementary school. "Nothing else ever interested me," he said. Mohazzabi started. out his higher education in the field of chemistry, but graduated with a PhD in physics from University of California-Berkeley. He came to Parks ide from the Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama where he taught upper-level courses in material science and mechanical engineering. This is not his first outstanding teaching award; he received one at Tuskeegee in 1984. "There it was totally different. Only the students decided.lwho won the awards]," he said, "but I value them both equally." He.has been teaching at Parks ide since 1986. He began teaching only upper-level physics courses, but in recent years he has been teaching physics to non-science majors. Speaking of the difference between the two courses, Dr. Mohazzabi said, "When you teach upper-level courses, you start off assuming a certain base of knowledge. That isn't always there. In lower-level courses, you can assume a blank slate and build a base of information from scratch." One of Mohazzabi's students, Wendy Paul, said "I look at everyday experiences differently now." Another student, Jim Hutsick, said he would take another physics class because his teacher made it so interesting for him. Asian American Organization Academic Achievers-Asian American Night Banquet 1993-1994 It was a beautiful, colorful night at the University Wisconsin-Parks ide; never has anyone seen so many bright colors and people from every culture that make up the great cultural diversity of this school. The Asian American Organization in coalition with the Center for Educational and Cultural Advancement, Friday, April 22, 1994 sponsored a Academic Achievement Banquet in honour of graduates, students with the highest G.P.A., students with 3.0 and above G.P.A., and student leaders. Among those honoured was Interim Chancellor John Stockwell as a Special Award Recipient, Special Recognition for Educational and Cultural Contributions, because of his significant contribution to the Success of students of color, volunteering his service for community related programs and for advocating in behalf of people of color. Anthony Brown said of Interim Chancellor Stockwell: "He is a person at the University who is consistent. There has to be someone who keeps the University going forward in turbulent times, which keeps everyone on a steady path, but which moves the University with the leadership and the drive that can be above no other." Not expecting to receive an award, Stockwell was speechless when presented with one. The words he spoke upon receiving his award were, "This award comes a surprise and means a great deal to me .. .I would like to make some remarks that come from the heart. I think I measure riches as I grow older in term~ of friendships f have with people who come from different backgrounds other than myself and encourage me to learn more about myself and more about the world I live in. 1 regard myself tonight as very rich to share in the in traditions that we are celebrating tonight. I congratulate all of you on your achievements and I thank you very much for this recognition." The student with the highest G.P.A. was from the jun ior class and was Christopher Sagar. The evenings emcee's were Sujata De and Shireesha Kothur. There were many performances from the people of Asian decent. Indrani Mukhergee'sang songs of her native homelands. There were exquisite dances called "Bharathnatyam," "Hindi," and "Kuchipudi" from India; every dance had a story to it. Nick stated, "As my major shows, it isn't required to be an English or Communication major to be Nick Zahn has been selected by the Ranger Editor Selection Committee as Editor-in-Chief of the Ranger Newspaper for the 1994-1995 school year. Zahn has been on the Ranger staff for one and half years, both as Assistant News Editor and News Editor. "My major goal is to make sure the paper is looked at as a credible source of news," said Zahn, Zahn has set goals for the Ranger and its staff. He would like to build on current Editor- in-Chief Steven Moore's staff diversity. While inviting the current staff back, he also would like other students to know the Ranger holds opportunities for them. Ideally, Zahn would also like to see advertising sales increase and find additional ways to raise money so as to decrease the burden students have to pay towards the Ranger. Financial independence and credibility are the main points Zahn will be striving for next year. '1 want to make sure the heart of the paper is going to be news, but also that we have the fun extras," said Zahn. 'The paper always need. to grow: Zahn added NEWS SECTION Page 2 Racine Literacy Council Fundraiser by Marquita Hynes News/Feature Writer Whoopi Goldberg, George and Barbara Bush, Gloria Steinern, and John Grisham recently participated in the Racine Literacy Council (RLC) Famous Book A uetion. While not physically at the April 22 event, they left their mark by donating autographed books for the fund raising activity. The Prairie School in Racine was the location for the Council's silent and non- silent book auction. Chairing the auction committee was Diane Welsh, the assistant director of Student Life at Parkside. Professor of English, Andrew Mcl.ean. also serving on the committee, relayed that the purpose of the affair was "to raise money to keep the free service the council offers. The literacy council teaches reading to those adults who cannot read." McLean said approximately $8000 was raised from the function. "It was a pleasant evening where people joined together and were willing to spend some money in support of a good cause." expressed the enthusiastic professor. His store, The Old Book Corner, along with the Little Professor Book Center-both in Racine-c-hested a series of authors on the day of the auction. ·Among the writers appearing at McLean's store were Parkside history professor Thomas Reeves, past English majors Michael Schumacher and Amy Bauman, and Charlotte Cote, author of Olympia Brown: The Battle for Equality. Cote signed books and talked about her research on Olympia Brown. Calling herself a feminist, Cote emphasized the significant contributions the subject of her book made to the historic Women's Movement, which THE RANGER IN REVIEW by Karen Schultz The end of the semester is here, and also the last issue of the Ranger News. The Ranger has under gone many changes this semester in image and attitude. Editor-in-Chief Steven Moore said recently, "With determination and a new positive attitude, we accomplished many goals throughout the school year." Accomplishments the Ranger has made this year include eliminating a financial debt which has hung over the Ranger for four years. "As of now we are out of debt," said Moore. Another goal Moore had set last fall was to increase staff membership and bring diversity to the staff. He has been tremendously successful in both areas, breaking the record of staff membership. In addition, the look, the attitude, and the overall design of the Ranger has changed. Moore and the Ranger staff created a new image and attitude by adding new sections, fighting to bring color back to the paper, and recruiting new businesses and corporations to advertise. The new advertisements are one reason for the Ranger eliminating its debt; business manager Tanya Dornik accomplished as much debt reduction in the six weeks at the beginning of this year as last year's staff achieved all year. Furthermore, new graphics, designs, and a more appealing way to present news stories supported the new image. Moore also gave students and facul ty mem bers the opportu n i ty to express their concerns and ideas through personal essays and Letters to the Ed i tor. "I feel proud of our accomplishments, but I'm also disappointed with several individuals on campus who are unaware of our limitations and constraints," said Moore. Moore also listed the limited supply of computers and limited student salaries, as compared with his previous school- College of Lake County, as severe drawbacks and challenges to overcome. Moore, who is graduating this semester, would like to pursue a career in education, teaching English literature or politics. In leaving Moore said, "I cannot stress the importance of having a weekly newspaper here at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside strongly enough." Moore added, "We provide an avenue of communication for students, administration, and faculty." Gretchen Kearney Becomes New Director At Parkside April Proske News/Feature Writer Gretchen Warner-Kearney, Ph.D., is the new director of the Learning Assistance and Counseling Center. As of March of 1994, Kearney is the new head of the Learning Assistance Program, the Student Support Services, Disabled Student Services, the Career Center, and the Counseling and Testing Center. However, the new plans for next year do not include the Counseling Center. Instead, it will be moved to the same department as Health Services sometime in late Mayor early June. Kearney stated that there will be a mission review /evaluation of the unit. The plans include moving any personal accounts to Student Health Services, and moving the Writing Center into the same unit as the Learning Center. Kearney said, "By the end of the semester, there should be new names and titles." (This will probably include hers as well.) The new plans also includes: a new Adult Student Advising Center, an Americans with Disabilities Act, and a Student Retention plan. The Adult Student Advising Center will attract more adult students to Parkside, and will help adult students adjust to college life. The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal regulation for what universities are required to do to enable disabled students appropriately. This includes workshops for faculty and staff on how to assist those that are handicapped, new special equipment such as hand rails and evacuation plans, and also the remodeling of the Writing Center. The Student Retention plan helps students stay in college easier, preventing students from dropping out. Kearney's career revolves around helping students become successful in college. Kearney expressed a wish to know more students from campus. "I really love it here so far. I've been made feel welcome, but I have a lot more people to meet. I want to meet everybody." Kearney is also thinking of teaching a Freshman Introductory COurse. Kearney originally came from Munstrom, Indiana. Kearney and her husband, who teaches marketing at Marquette University, moved from Chicago, Illinois to Racine, Wisconsin. Kearney obtained her PhD at the Loyola University of Chicago, her Master of Arts degree at the Indiana University, and her Bachelors Degree at DePauw University . Kearney is pleased with her new job at Parkside. She describes her staff as being "a really group of people." Kearney mentioned that she was "really impressed. with the faculty and staff." She also stated that she is "very excited about being at Parkside and (she) is enjoying (her) position here and would like to meet everyone." included the attainment of the right of women to vote. The author said she could not "understand why universities and high schools are not teaching about Olympia Brown." She spoke of Brown's ordainment as the first woman in a denomination in the United States. The Dhanna Lion: A Biography of Allen Ginsberg, Parkside graduate Michael Schumacher's most recently published work, was one of the topics the writer discussed that day. He also discussed his present works in progress. Schumacher, a Kenosha resident, is contracted to write Eric Clapton's authorized biography as well as the biography of deceased folk singer, Phil Ochs, Schumacher is also known to numerous Parkside students for the journalism workshop he conducted last semester. Parkside studen ts,' faculty and staff interested in learning more about the Racine Literacy Council and how they can get involved in the fight against illiteracy can contact the organization at 632-9495. Third Shift: Cleaning Through the Night After the last student or the last instructor walks through the door every night, the halls may seem dark and empty, but looks can be deceiving. Little do we know that there are still 21 people lurking around various parts of the school. We may not see them, but they exist. They are the cleaning staff on third shift. Outing class and library hours we might see members of the cleaning staff at work, but when we leave for the night, work has just begun for those on third shift. The third shift cleaning staff, supervised by Pat Woods, who has been working at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for eleven years, is broken into two groups, the Area Crew and the Rover Crew. The Area Crew is responsible for cleaning the same area every night, and the Rover Crew does things such as waxing floors, cleaning the carpet and windows, and filling in for the Area Crew. Tom Muelke, Custodian 2, who has been at Parkside for eight years works on the Area Crew and says that one of the benefits of his job is that it gives him the opportunity to work alone. "l've always been a person who likes to work on my own, and being an area person I can do that," says Muelke. While Muelke is not too fond of the lack of sleep, and he gets angry when people don't recycle paper right, he says that he feels that students attitudes are good toward custodians. There are times when students are all a little messy and take it for granted that the mess will disappear; thanks to the cleaning staff i~ does. So while we are at home sleeping or studying for the following day's exam, the third shift cleaning staff is hard at work doing their part to provide us with a clean learning environment. The Board of Regents visits Parkside by Rosemary Scozzaro On Thursday, April 7 and Friday, April 8, 1994, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents met at Parkside. The purpose of this meeting was to confirm the recommendation and officially name Dr, Eleanor J. Smith as the new chancellor of UW-Parkside. The recommendation on Thursday, March 31, was made by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents System President Katherine Lyall and a regent search committee.
