After _iR~(!r~S~onThursday with the five finalists for the- chancellorship, the long- awaited recommendation by UW-System President Katharine Lyall to the Board of Regents was announced to the public: Dr. Eleanor j. Smith, vice-president of academic affairs and provost at the William Patterson College of New Jersey, was her selection to become the new Chancellor at UW-Parkside. Dr. Smith, 61, will succeed Dr. Sheila Kaplan, who served for seven years as Parkside's chancellor before her resignation in the fall of 1993, when she became president of Metropolitan State College in Denver, and Dr. john C. Stockwell, who was Parkside's Interim Chancellor during the fall and spring semesters. -= -:- Lyall's recommendation "¥iii be put before the Regents at their monthly meeting, which will . take place on April 7-8 at UW- Parkside, and if the Regents concur with Lyall's decision, Dr. Smith will take office as Chancellor on the day of july I. Smith PSGA Election Results Announced by: Erica L. Sanchez News Editor On March 30 and 31, the Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) held elections to detennine who would fill the Presidential and Vice Presidential seats, and also to determine who would who fill the seats in the senate and the other organizational open spots. Vince Bomer, a Parkside sophomore and senator, was elected to fill the posi tion of President in PSGA for the upcoming term. When interviewed, Borner stated that "I am elated about the prospect of being able to help this university move into its next phase of growth. This does not just affect me-but the whole student bod y-for the students will have someone who will not just talk at them, but to them. 1 would like to start off by congratulating the new chancellor and by sending an open request to have all student organizations come together in order to bring respect and unity back to this university. It would be good to open the lines of communication and to extend an olive branch to the neighboring communities so that we can know their needs and ask for their support. Overall, I hope that all people involved in the elections are proud of the work they accomplished, and 1 hope that the efforts of the other candidates are appreciated. It Could Never Happen ToMe: Jason Ostman's Story by Karen Diehl Feature Editor Special thanks to jason's parents for sharing their precious memories with me. My deepest sympathies go out to them and to everyone who loved jason. This looks like my house, was the thought that struck me as 1 stepped up to the middle- class Kenosha home. I guess I hadn't expected that. Horrible tragedies like the one that brought me here just didn't happen to people like me-or so 1 thought. After listening to the two hour story that jason Ostman's parents told, 1 was forced to change my mind about that theory. Things like this could happen to anyone. jason was a 20-year old physics major at Parkside who was involved with Media Services and the Volunteer Center. He put together Easter baskets for disabled children and helped out at shelters for battered women. He went out to dinner with his parents every Friday night. He loved going to concerts;he smiled a lot. In many ways, Jason was just like any other college student. This past New Year's Eve, like any other college student, Jason went to a party to bring in 1994. But unlike many other college students, Jason Ostman never made it home. While he was at the party, he began having seizures and was rushed to the hospital. There, he slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness. It was later discovered that there was LSD in his system. The Kenosha County Medical Examiner's report indicated that it was this LSD which caused the seizures, and ultimately jason's tragic death. "Jason was just an average kid, he was a good kid like a lot of other kids. It's just this bad thing happened to him;' commented jason's father. I never realized just how often this kind of thing really did happen. The hard fact is that in Kenosha county since July of1990, fifty percent of all fatalities occuring in people ages 21 and under showed drugs or alcohol present in the body at the time of death. This eye- opening statistic came as a real shock to me. Everyone learns that drugs and alcohol are bad, that they can kill. Everyone has seen movies where people die from drug overdoses or drunk driving accidents. I wish, though, that everyone could spend a few hours talking to the devastated loved ones that jason left behind. When I stepped into the Ostman's house it was like stepping into another world, one that I always had thought only existed in the movies or on the news. Visiting that world was really frightening; I can't imagine living there. jason Ostman's death was a senseless loss. The pain caused by his passing can't be justified. Hopefully though, somebody, somewhere will hear about jason and think twice before choosing to use drugs or alcohol. For that person, it's not too late. In Jason's case, we can only hold on to his memory and keep him in our minds and hearts. Ranger News April 6, 1994 Dr. Smith continued from Pg.1 Dr. Smith heartily responded that "I will examine the issues in the environmental scan ...and determine what needs alteration. We must look at the internal environment and the external---which is the relationship that Parkside has with Kenosha and Racine and their constituents. We must build a better relationship with the community that surrounds Parkside, for about 80% of the people are alumni and I would like to tie their interests in with the university---the city, the administration, the media, the corporate and business communities-v-I am interested in finding their needs and interests." "However: Dr. Smith added, "I want to talk to the people first and get the flavor and feel for their thoughts and beliefs; I would like to explore their ideas." Dr, Smith was adamant about working closely with the students and faculty, and intends to be a "more visible chancellor at Parkside. I wish to create a climate where the students would fecI a sense of community, as well as the faculty and staff. I want everyone (but especially the students) to have a connection with the university, while they are there and' when they leave it for the world," While Dr. Smith has many goals in mind, one of the most important is her need to create lines of communication between herself and the students, "If appoin ted;' she said, "I would like a reception or some open time where the students could come and meet me. It would be nice if it was before graduation, for I would not want students to graduate before I could see them, and they could meet the new chancellor who will be around for the upcoming years." Dr. Smith was born in, Ohio, and was the eldest of four childnen. Her mother, who still lives in Circleville, was a domestic worker, and her father was a janitor and truck driver. They are her role models, she says, for although both of her parents received little formal education, they regarded it with much esteem and Importance.' Dr. Smith went on to receive bachelor's degrees in music and ed ucation from Capital University (1955-56), graduate coursework in education from Ohio State University (l957-66), and her doctorate in African-American history from the Union Institute (1972). She has held numerous positions, such as; dean of institutional affairs and professor of African-American studies at Smith College in Northampton, Mass, (l988-90); University of Cincinnati vice provost (l985-88); acting vice provost (l983-85); associate senior vice president (1983-84); director of summer sessions (1983-85); assistant senior vice president and assistant provost (l982-83); and faculty member. who eaught African-American history classes (1972-88). Dr. Smith was also a public elementary school teacher (1956- 64) and middle school teacher (1964-72) in Ohio. Her hobbies include; playing piano, reading (romance novels), singing, and travel. Dr. Smith's travels have taken her to some exotic places; such as _. Thailand, Brazil, China, Kenya, Russia, Surinam, and India. She has also been listed in the editions of "International Who's Who;' "Who's Who in the Midwest;' and many other publications, She is married with one daughter. In making her recommendation, UW- System President Lyall stated that "Dr. Smith is an effective, proven leader and administrator, as well as a nationally recognized scholar and former public school teacher. She intends to be an active participant in the life of the Kenosha and Racine communities. Or. Smith understands UW-Parkside's unique mission," said Lyall, "and is eager to draw the university more closely into partnership in meeting the needs of southeastern Wisconsin." Dr. Smith was one of the five finalists chosen by the Parkside Chancellor Search and Screen Committee, who announced their selections for the posi tion on March 25. The other finalists included Dr. Mark S. Auburn, Dr. Dennis L. Hefner, Dr, Marlene Springer, and our own Interim Chancellor, Dr, John C. Stockwell. Therefore, all that is keft to the Chancellor search now is to wait for the decision of the UW -System Board of Regents. As aforementioned, if they concur with Lyall's decision, Dr, Smith will take office July 1. "Dr. Smith's experience;' Lyall ended, "plus a strong academic and professional record, make Dr. Smith the best choice for this position. Goldstein is purported to have been a member of the Kach movement, an anti-Arab militant group advocated by the late Rabbi Melr Kahane. Throughout the world people presenting themselves as Jewish leaders and representatives have denounced Goldstein's violent act and the Kach movement. Those interviewed for the following article do not reflect all the views of those who are Muslim or Jewish. The following order in which the interviews appear is the same in which they occurred, Muhanad Hamdan, a UW-Parkside sophomore majoring in sociology/anthropology, necently came to the Ranger office asking to be interviewed about the Muslims killed in Hebron. He' described himself as an Arab-Palestinian-American and a Muslim. "l'm just tired of everybody classifying Arabs as terrorists. If one Jew does something wrong he's considered wacko or nuts, but if an Arab does it he's a terrorist. I just don't understand how he (Goldstein) could've got in there past the Israeli guards;' relayed Hamdan. - -' _._-" - He said that he needed to tell people that what goes on in that area of the world is not reported accurately-ahatthe media always. presents Arabs as the "bad guys," Accompanying Hamden was a Parkside student who is a girlfriend to an Arab- American. She explainedthat she !lad not paid attention to Middle East matters until she started seeing her present boyfriend (not Hamdan), who is Muslim. "You'll hear more about a Palestinian or an Arab doing something to the Jewish community than you will the other way. Right now there are Jewish soldiers with guns and Palestinians with rocks and these soldiers will kill Palestinian children and women and you won't hear about that. There are horrific stories you don't hear about because they're a little bit biased. And right now I'm being a little bit biased and 1 have to say it, but 1 think it's been the other way for way too long," stressed the student. Regarding peace negotiations between Israelis and Arabs, Hamdan expressed. that he would "like peace to go, but now I think no one's going to do it," His friend added, "If it were the other way around the Jewish community would've pulled. out of the peace agreement in an instant." Hamdan ended the conversation by saying that "It's only that little, tiny percent of the Jews that want to eradicate aU Arabs. I have friends in Racine that are Jews. I see them every day. Not ali jews are bad. Not all israelis are bad. This one settler (Goldstein) was bad," Another Parkside student shared some of his views with the Ranger. He identified himself as an Arab-American and a Muslim, but asked not to have his name printed because he was fearful of receiving harassment. The student said that during the Persian Gulf war he and his family had some negative experiences involving people he called "unintelligent". He said that he had lived near the city of Ramallah in the area most commonly referred to as the West Bank. In 1989, at the age of 13,he came to the United States with his family. Memories of his past homeland included the continual closing of schools, due to the intafada--an Arab uprising mainly comprised of youth. When he first heard about the killings in the mosque, he said he had expressed a feeling of shock: "1 couldn't believe that such a huge number of people could get killed that way. I was afraid that some of my friends could have been there. I feel a real anger because people were shot in.t~eir backs when they were praying, They couldn't defend themselves. The soldiers were supposed to be guarding the place and they just let him (Goldstein) in." He concluded by saying, "Kach is a dangerous movement and the present leader not only hates the Arabs, but the Jews too." The student believed that Goldstein may not have acted alone-that there may have been some kind of military involvement. "You can't trust the Israeli government," he said. Parkside associate professor of philosophy, Aaron Snyder, who is Jewish, also shared some of his tho,}ig!tJ~. Snyder was informed, by this writer, that two Muslim students interviewed for this story expressed their concerns about media bias in favor of Israel. Regarding the student-comment that the press always dubs a violent act by an Arab as an act of terrorism, Snyder said "that's not true." He explained that there were numerous incidents in which violent acts committed by Middle Easterners were not linked by the media to the provokers' political alliances. "One way of finding out whether an action is an approved or instigated act is asking the presumed instigators," he suggested. The Israeli government has not connected itself with the mosque killings. The Kach movement has not said they were behind the act. A representative of the movement appearing on the television show,60 Minutes, on Feb. 27,did say he would condone violence in order to stop the peace negotiations. "What's fairly clear is that only a minuscule percent of either the Israeli or the Jewish population condone this act," said Snyder. He continued, "There is uniform agreement across the political spectrum, from far right to far left, that the act was horrible and unjustified." To stress how strongly the Jewish community in Israel does not want to be connected with the Kach movement, the professor told of how "the only member elected. to Israeli parliament who was ~ot seated ,was t.heone time Kach succeeded in winning an election. Israeli parhament refused to seat the Kach minister on the grounds that Kach's doctrine was racist, and the Israeli constitution forbids such racist attitudes. They do seat Arabs who are opposed to lsrael." During the course of an hour-long conversation, the issue of peace negotiations came up. Snyder stressed, "I do want to make one point that I do think is important. Anybody who listens to the news nowadays will hear the repeated refrain that the problem is the settlers. It's becoming the cliche" of the moment. What is.supposed to be the position that we reach if we accept that view?
