If you have even slightly followed alpine ski racing in the past decade, you know the name ''T omba" If you watched the past three Winter Olympics, you are probably familiar with him. He is the masterof slalom racing and he is the 1994 Wotld Cup Champion. How does a small paper like the Ranger News hook up with a big name like Alberto Tomba? This writer has come to the conclusion that he is simply a nice guy. Why do 1 Baythat (yes, I am breaking a journalistic rule and putting myself into the story)? Read on to find out. While UW -Perkeide students were at various locations during spring break, this student taught slciing in Vail,Colorado. I was in Vail from March 15-20, while the World Cup Finals were being held. Recently coming from the Olympics were all the top ski racers: Alberto Tomba, Tommy Moe, Picabo Street, Diann Roffe~Steinrotter I and many more. 'Through a fellow ski instructor, I rux only was told where the Italian superstar was staying, but also that he wouldreturn all phone calls from women. Like many news writers, I alwayshave my trusty tape recorder with me. Rarher than call as a fan (which I am), I was able to call as a teporter. Afrer playing a bit of phone tag, the interview was scheduled. What follows is an account of our COnversation. Accompanying the living legend Was his father. They were to go to dinner mer the interview and ! omba, Sr, would prove to be helpful in a few small translations. Albeno appeared to be approximately six feet tall and somewhere in the vicinity of 190 pounds-a solid, muscular man. In his olive colored pants, stylish sweater, dark hair, and unshaven face he was strikingly attractive, After a warm greeting we got down to "business, II MH: I heard that you skied for over an hour with a children's ski school class at Vail this week and I was requested to let you know that was really appreciated. AT: (smiles rather shyly and nods) MH: I would like to start with some technical questions, but to begin, when did you first get into skiing and then racing-how old were you? AT: (settling into his chair-we were in the mezzanine of the hotel, away from the major influx of people) I am twenty-seven. I start nineteen years ago. My father was a-he loved skiing and he was in school in Switzerland when he was a baby. And we went in Dolomites for summer on the glacier. And in winter {speaks with father in Italian for a brief moment) I start in Cortina I live in Bologna-it is one hour by car, you can see the mountain. MH: As for racing, was this something you felt you just had to o::~ , , Vall DIlly/Tom Horrocks do? AT: (smilesand laughs) For me, every time when I was in sports I like to go first and the others were behind me, in the back; for everything, tennis, everything (smiles and laughs again). :MH: How many wins do you have overall? AT: Victories? Race? MH: Yeah. AT: Thirty-four. And three gold medals, Olympics. Two silvers. MH: Congratulations on your silver in the Olympics this year. AT: (laughs and raises his eyebrows) I was lucky (referring to the three racers who failed to complete the course after him). MH: When and if you ever feel like quitting, what keeps you going? For instance, in '89 I was here when you competed in the World Alpine Ski Championship and you took a slam. What keeps you psyched up, or do you ever feel apprehensive after you've taken a bad fall? AT: (long sigh) Five years ago, before my [present] coach, my orher coach, he left the Italian team. He was great. He [present coach] won four world cups and maybe he (laughs) don't speak so much, but just a little bit is enough for him, [It's] because he live in north Italy, For me, I was born in the ciry. It is different. You lmow? MH: Yes. Yes, Alberto, do you ever ski just for fun on your days off, just go free-skit AT: I need to free-ski this year (laughs). I like to go no gates, no course, MH: You've been very innovative in your ski racing. For instance, I've noticed in your technique that your starting position is much different from the competition's, You have this continual movement in the start, AT: Sometimes, Now I try a new start. Strong. It depends on the . snow conditions, giant or slalom (race). MH: Where did that innovation come from? Is this something you came up with on your own or a combination of you and your coach? Where do you get these ideas from? AT: Oh, maybe. Maybe, the coach, but I win (laughs and smiles). I won. MH: (agreeing) You're the one who did it. AT: (laughs and smiles some more) MH: How would you say that your technique differs from the competition and do you study your competition? AT: On video? MH: Yeah. AT: Yeab. My physical trainer, he is [also] my video man. And in the summer he help me in the race, in the training, in the course. And in the evening we can see everything on the slope (via the videoj-c-ehe top, in the middle, the bottom. And we see where is the mistake. MH: Do you watch your competition too? AT: Yeah. Sometimes, MH: What do you think of the course here, where you'll be racing? AT: Just today I was in the course one hour. It was good, but (laughs) the weather it is kind of bad, [It's like) summer-time. MH: What are your thoughts on btinging the World Alpine SId Championships to Vail in '99? AT: I can come, like tourist (laughs). It's great, after ten years (the World's were held in Vail in '89), The COUIse,there may be a new one, Maybe a new lift, some accommodations, hotels, MIl: Is there really a difference between the top of the line ski equipment-skis, poles, boots, bindings-from the different manufacturers? AT: Yeah, maybe. In the last two years it's changed-the skis, the bindings, new helmets, new gloves. MIl: What are you racing on these days? AT: Rossignol and Look. M.H: How are you tuning your skis for this race on Sunday? AT: Ask my ski man (laughs). MIl: What's your favorite race course? AT: I can't tell you because (smiles). This is a question! In U,S,A, the course is great, in Europe, and Italy. I think so because they know how to prepare the mow, the ice, For me ismuch better, for the other guys too. Bur I can't tell you the (favorite) place. Four or five (laughs). MH: What males you so consistent in your racing? (He and his father look at my pages of questions and look amazed, to which Irespond, 'There's only a few more, I promise," and they both laugh. "She's fast," saysAlberto, with a smile.) AT; No, I can't tell you in English. It's too difficult for me. Sorry, but (stops). MIl: Your English is fine, AT: No. No. MH: How much longer do you see yourself competing at the world level? AT: (laughs) 1 stop afrertomottow (laughs again). MH: You are?! AT: No (laughs). Maybeoneyeat at two {looks at hisfather). My father he say three, One enough, No more, MH: What do you see yourself doing when you retire? AT: Ask him later, he (looks at his father) prepare fat my future. In Japan, Hollywood [maybe 1] make a movie (laughs and smiles). Wow! MH: Now I feel compelled, at ehte point, to aSKyou some of the "fluff" questions, I wasn't going to, bur.; AT: (laughs and mimics the press) "Albeno, what do you think about ... r' MH: This image that you have (as a playboy), is this true! AT: No! It's not true. Crazy question (says something in Italian to his father). MH: Here's one--oh boy-why are you still single? AT: Who like to know (laughs and looks at my note pad)? Me? Smgle? No, I'm married (Straight face). No. I have a girlfriend, but she's busy too and I can see her just two months in one year. MIl: Do you ever ski on a date with your girlfriend? AT: (laughs) Ski? No. Just, we go to the beach. I like to go to a quiet place. (We are momentarily interrupted by an autograph seeker, whom he obliges. Another approaches, but he responds, "I'm busy, sorry.") MH: Do you have bodyguards when you're out and about? AT: No, just myself (laughs and flexes his biceps), MH: Do you hate these kind of questions? AT: No (politely). MH: What's the story with the Ferraris? How many do you have? AT: Just one. I saw the new Ferrari and Ichange with the older one. Mine is red (laughs). The men's slalom race was cancelled on Sunday due to the treacherous course conditions.
