The expansions will put under roofapproximately 70,000 square feet of multi-purpose floor space enclosing an indoor track and surrounded by expanded facilities for athletic and intra- mural actiVity. However, this dream of a possible expansion will not become rea lit) unless students vote in favor (If the refer- endum. On March 9-10, students acrosscampus will be voting on whether or not to support a refer- endum which is expected to cost each student an additional $B.OO per semester (a grand total of 5700,000 from the students). "A 'yes' vote is essential to our abili- ty tD move forward with this majoraddition to the campus, II said Interim Chancellor john C. Stockwell. The expansion will cost about $9.25 million. The State, If it approves construction, willrequire that 15% of that amount be raised from "private" SOUrces, or about $1.4 million, SIockwell added. "I am very pleased to note that at least half ($700,000) of that $1.4 million will be raised from volunteer donors in the Racin.,;Kenosha COUnties who see the need for this facility and the benefits it Willbring to the students, to the University's academic and athlet- Icprograms, and to the region," he said. According to Stockwell, the current condition of the PElAthletics Building is far below the standard. "It's a well main- tained dump. 'The students are going to be proud of this greatiy expanded facility. It will be a building that we will be extreme- ly proud of." Brucker and Tracy Pees are two students who represented the student body on the Steering Committee for the PE/Athletics Building Expansion. 111 was very excited about the possible expan- sion. As a student athlete, I know that it is needed. It's also needed for instructional and recreational purposes. From the student athlete perspective, the gym is always crowded," said Tracy Pees, Parkside senior and sports athlete. "We have prac- tices at 9:00 at night and also at 6:00 in the morning. When you get home from practice at mid- night, it's really hard to study. It ruins your day having to practice ali of the time. I know I may not be here to see it and to use it. But I know that each student wi II benefit from it/' she said. Pees stated that the current PE B.J. BRUCKER facility is not large enough to accommodate the large student body that we have here on cam- pus. «There are not enough hours in the day for everyone to use our facility," she said. Pees plays softball and the team must prac- tice in the wresding room where the batting cage is located. "We cannot use it when the wrestlers are practicing. We can't use the room an hour before because the wrestlers must have their mat cleaned. The baseball players also use the same mat and so do the cheerleaders during practice. This is a room with mats where these wrestlers are supposed to roll around on. The dirt gets into the mats and into their skin and it is just disgusting," she said. TRACY PECS Pecs said that the track and field teams are also affected by the current conditions of the PE faci lity. "I know that the track and field team have to come at 6:00 in the morning to run indoors, especially when it is too cold to run outside. They do this early in the morning so that they do not get hit by things flying around during the day." She fur- ther explained that all teams-> baseball, softbali, basketball teams--all have to practice at night. II And when the soccer team uses the gym, they use almost all of the space. Parkside also has a big intramural basket- ball program which requires all the basketball courts at once. When this goes on, nothing else can go on. All of these events are just an inconvenience to the students." According to Pees, a non-ath- lete can also benefit from the new expansion. "The field house, which is the bulk of the addition, is hug<>-multi-purpose floors and dividers. This space can be used for non-athletic activities such as conventions, car shows, and any extracurricu- lar actlvitles." Tracy Pecs believes that the additional $8.00 a semester, over a twenty year time period, is not a burden for students. "If you think about it $8.00 a semester is not much. A majority of students that attend Parks ide, and who live in Kenosha and Racine, will benefit from this new expansion. It will benefit both communities." B.j. Brucker, the other student on the Steering Committee for the PE/Athletics Building Expansion, stated that "the university very much needs a new expansion physical education building. it is simply inadequate for the general students." Brucker was a soccer player during his first years here continU8d on pg 2 BRIDGETTE JOHNSON BRIDGETTE JOHNSON, MINORITY RECRUITER SPECIALIST by Reynaido Belmares Bridgette is 1993 UW-Parkside graduate and is now worki ng at the University as a Minority Recruiter/Specialist. She has been employed since October, 1993. "To begin working here towards the end of the semester was a challenge, because I only had five days of training and after that I was on my own. The fall semes- ter is the time when the majority of recruiting is done and many counselors were not around. She added, "I had to basically learn a lot on my own. It was not as difficult as Ithought it would be because Iwent to school here and knew a lot of things about the University already. if I was not a graduate of this University, Ithink it would have been much harder to adjust." Bridgette's job is to recruiter minority students from high school. She works in the Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Madison, Illinois and Minnesota areas. UIreally enjoy my job, because I have the opportu nity to work with students/ states johnson, UBybeing a minority and young, I can relate to the many issues the students may come in contact with. I like the traveling part of the job, but one disadvantage the University has is its housing. We are limited to this area to recruit from, because we have no where to put stu- dents from out of the area, once they are accepted, so why recruit far away. I am glad that the University is taking into consider- ation to build more housing; this will give us the opportunity to get students enrolled from other areas and more students from the areas we are dealing with now." At the present time, johnson is a LTE(limited term employee), and the job will be come open sometime in May. Her term will last throughout june. When she took the position she was aware that the job was only limited. The reason being is the previous employee (Terri Greathouse) had quit and moved to Texas. The University had to place someone in the position for the rest of the school year. They did not have time for the search and screen process until the end of the acad- emic school year and Terri was unable to finish the term. "I thought the opportunity would be great and Iwill definitely apply for the position when it comes up, because I really love my job. I like helping others. Just because of the gym is filled with classes, filled with intramural, filled with practices all day-irs just never open. The space is inadequate for the large amount of students here," he said. Brucker stated that during his first years he also noticed that the weight room was not suitable for students. 'When I first came here, I discovered that the weight room was terrible. I also noticed that Parkside did not have a suit- able field house. I went to a high school of 500 students and we had better equipment than Parkside." Brucker further stated that this new athletic building is not only a building for athletes. 'The purpose is multi-purpose use that will benefit the entire university as a whole," he added.
