Cook Assistant News Editor Preliminary steps are under- ay to plan and implement ren- ovations to the Coffee Shoppe area in Lower Main Place, acoording to Mr. William R. If permission is granted by the UW System, a planning commit- tee oonsisting of staff and stu- dents will attempt to determine what members of the University community might like to see developed, through surveys and discussions. This means that a target date of Christmas 1994 has been set for the completion of a contract which will be put out to bid. What will the renovations look like? "The tendency among Universities is to move toward a 'Food Court' kind of concept, similar to those found in many malls," Niebuhr reports . Whether this would involve national franchises or one of the college food contractors using local brand names is as yet com- pletely undetermined. "We are hopeful that the successful con- tractor will foot the bill for some of the development, similar to what happened with the book- store renovations just complet- ed," he says. Dr. Steve 1 icLaughlin , Dean of Students, reports that a com- mittee has already been formed to examine the changes in stu- dent organization space that will be a necessary part of such reno- vations . The committee, headed by Ms. Diana Sharpe, and including representatives of var- ious student organizations is in the very initial stages of plan- ning, having met once. The com- mittee's mandate is to study where organizations can find adequate space in Parkside's existing structure , at least on an interim basis, until a possible long-term addition to the Student Union is completed. McLaughlin reiterates much of cont on page 2 New Election Called by Chris Tishuk The results of the fall UW- Parkside student government election held October 20 and 21 have been ruled to be invalid and a new election will be held at a future date. In a formal complaint contest- ing the election, Terri Jacobson, student senator, outlined a few of the problems and impropri- eties concerning the election. According to Jacobson, Dave Towle, Senator and Chairman of the Election Committee, "Stuffed the ballot box." He has formally admitted to putting a ballot into the ballot box to "even out the voting." This action was wit- nessed by PSGA president Eric Bovee, who immediately made Towle rip up the ballot. Bovee said, "I was very upset with Senator Towle's actions." After the incident, Towle was allowed to sit at the ballot box under the constant watch of Bovee. According to Bovee, "After the incident, he was at the poll for 15 minutes to half an hour. But Dave was never there by himself and I sat with him the whole time. I wasn't going to leave him alone and I couldn't dismiss him because it was a matter for the Election Committee and he was the chair of that committee." Bovee waited until the follow- ing morning report this issue. When asked why he waited so long, he replied, "That was one mistake I made. I didn't notify anyone right away. But I did that because the issue needed to be brought up to the Election Committee and the entire com- mittee was not there when the votes were counted. But Dave never touched the ballots. All he did was write down write in can- didates and he was watched the whole time." Towle could not be reached for comment. But this was not the only problem with the election. As reported in Jacobson's com- plaint, one student was allowed to vote twice. And after further investigation of the results it was revealed that 308 votes were cast while only 304 voters were accounted for. Aleo, some of the ballots were put into the box without initials from a mem- ber of the election committee present at the polling place- a direct violation of an Election Committee resolution. Because of those proprieties it was decided on Monday, November 1, by the senate, to throw out all the results of the October election and to redo the election. Terri Greathouse Resigns Bruce Rocco, President Pro- Temp of PSGA, and unofficial winner of vice-presidential seat in that election, said, "The sen- Jeanne Sanchez News Writer October 29, 1993, was the last day for Terri Greathouse, the Minority Recruitment Manager, for Parkside. Two years ago Greathouse joined the staff of UW-Parkeide. She had moved away, but come back when her father devel- oped cancer. She needed a job, saw one in the newspa- per, and the job was ~o be a recruiter . She came m told her future boas, "I'm your new recruiter." She was hired immediately. She stated recently, "I felt it was an excellent opportunity to fulfill one of my career goals." Greathouse has fulfilled all the goals she created for her- self at the university. She hoped to achieve a remark- able increase in the number of students of color who attend this institution. Parkside has the second largest enrollment ratio of students of color in the UW System. She created pride in the institution with students at Parkside, and expanded the credibility of the university. She stated that she truly enjoyed her last two years at Parkside. "I still have great expectations for the future from some of the seeds I have planted. I firmly believe the best is yet to come. I am confident that my pro- tegee will implement the same commitment and enthu- siasm that has been demon- strated in the past," she said. "Terri had a lot of ideas that she could not get imple- mented but, that's what hap- pens with new growth, even- tually it out grows the soil,"said Anthony Brown, Director of CECA. Greathouse wanted commu- nity awareness and involve- ment with the students. She started a program calJed "Plant-A-Seed" for the stu- dents of color at Parkside and in the elementary schools.
