When asked why so few members had attended Monday 's meeting, theDirectoroffered that perhaps scheduling conflicts had prevented some from attending, while others were not likely to show an active interest unless the issue on the agenda of any particular meeting was "contro- versial." He then stated that mem- bers "had more than a week" to exarnine the budget package sent out before Monday's meeting. Niebuhr stated furlherthatPUAB has been "struggling all semes- ter" to maintain attendance at the meetings, and, in an effort to resolve the scheduling difficul- ties, he also suggested that rep- resentative groups designate per- manent attendees who would be able "to make meetings and hold interest in attending." A list of those who had attended the Feb- ruary 15 was unavailable. A vote to approve the Park- side Union budget for 1993-94 wasnot held at the pre-scheduled meeting of the Parkside Union Advisory Board (pUAB) on Feb- ruary 15, due to a lack of suffi- cient attendance by voting mem- bers. Failure to reach a quorum for the third meeting in a row pre- vented attendees present at Monday's meeting from voting toratify the budget proposal but, according to a memo released February 17 by PUAB Director William Niebuhr, "some good dIscussion took place regarding thespecifics within the budget" According to the memo, Niebuhr alsoexplained some of the major differences between the current andpending budgets. In spite. of last Monday's events, Niebuhr intends to for- IVardthe budget as presented. Edgerton hastens to stress, however, "...That it's re- ally open to anyone with any major at all." The target date for full imple- mentation of the Environmental Studies Minor is the fall of 1993. This target date depends, how- ever, on the University faculty and Senate; "I don't think that there will be any opposition to this proposal," say Edgerton. Marge Piercy to give poetry reading Sam Manchester Feature Editor Highly acclaimed poet and novelist Marge Piercy will present a reading of her poetry at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March lOin the University of Wisconsin- Parks ide Library. According to English De- partment Chairperson Donald Kurnmings, "Ms. Piercy is known chiefly as a feminist writer whose political commitment informs her works, which focus on individu- als struggling to escape restric- tive social roles in order to realize their personal potential." Whereas her novels are com- plex and involved, the poetry she writes is simply stated and often structured in a format easy to follow, often employing brilliant metaphors and intense imagery. From her first works in the late 60's through her more well-rounded portrayals and flashbacks ofthe anti- warmovementofthe 1970's, Piercy has made a lasting impact on the literary world and has received both praise and criticism from poets and critics alike. Critic Dean Flower has said that "Piercy's writing is energetic, rang- ing from rage to passion to bitter- ness. She celebrates feminism, lov- ing and nature; she condemns ev- erything from war and sexism to pollution and food additives. Marge Piercy's poetry has been published in anum ber ofjour- nals and magazines, including The American Poetry Review and Harper's. New county emergency siren placed in Phy Ed lot Gabe Kluka News Editor The students who live in the residence halls will probably be in for a rude awakening around 10:30 a.rn. on the third Saturday in March. This is the first sched- uled test of the new "Penetrator 50" emergency warning siren that has just been erected in the Physi- cal Education parking lot by Kenosha County Emergency Ser- vices. The siren, according to Kenosba County Emergency Ser- vices director Paul Hess, is part of an approximately $500,000 project to make the county warning system state of the art by 1994. Hess said that the siren is replacing the smallerdecibal civil defense sirens which covered only a three quarter mile area; the new siren covers an astounding two mile radius. UW-Parkside Chief of Police Dave Ostrowski was pleased to see the siren put in place here, "Since we have had residence halls here, wedid not have areal good way of notifying the campus as far as tornado warn- ings, or any type of emergency. ...the closest sirens were located on the town of Somers town hall, and also at the small fire station near here. Unfortunately, both sirens were facing the wrong way. " Ostrowski included that this comer of Kenosha county was lack- ing siren coverage, because, as he stated, "You could only hear the sirens if the wind was blowing the right way."
