At approximately 7:56 PM, Campus Police received a report that a man had exposed his geni- tals to a woman who had been studying at one of the tables in the D 1 Level Vending Area ofWLLC. Police Officer Gerald King and Reserve Police Officer David Brehm interviewed the 35 year- old Victim, who is nota student at UW-Parkside. She said she had been study- ing in the area and had noticed the 28 year-old student also studying at a nearby table.' Joseph Kane, a UW - Parkside student, had gone to the vending area and talked with the victim. He noted that Cassity had stared at him oddly but thought nothing of it. He then finished his conversa- tion and left. Chancellor, and SusanJohnson, Registrar, G. Gary Grace, Assistant Chancellor for Sladent Affairs, requested that in- linnati on regarding the policy be llademore easily available to stu- daus. The policy, adopted last May by the Faculty Senate, states: "A student with a conflict between an .acadernic requirement and a reli- gious observance must be given an alternative means of meeting the academic requirement, subject to the following: a. To be granted an alternative means of meeting an academic requirement, students must notify their instructors, within the first two weeks of class, of specific days or dates on which they will request relief from an academic requirement. (The in- structor must treat this information as confidential.) b. Instructors are not obligated to schedule make- ups before the regularly scheduled requirements. c. Instructors may set reasonable limits on the total number of days claimed by anyone student" The policy supports StateLaw 36.43, which mandates that public educational institutions provide for the reasonable accommodation of a student's sincerely held religious beliefs with regard to academic requirements. At one point in time, the vic- tim had a brief conversation with Cassity concerning a class he was taking. She became uncomfort- able as he began to turn the con- versation to a discussion of his personal life. She excused her- self from further discussion and heretumedtoaseatdirectlyacross from the table where she was working. She noticed, a few minutes later, that he seemed to be pur- posefully making some noises to attract her attention. When she looked at him, she saw that his penis was exposed from under his shorts and he was masturbat- ing. She screamed at him and ran' from the area. Kane, who was studying in Upper Main Place, heard her screams and assisted the victim in calling Campus Police. As Officer King was obtain- ing information from the victim, Officer Brehm returned to the squad car to begin a search for the suspect. A man fitting the description provided by the victim emerged from the wooded area just south of WLLC and approached the squad car. He told the officer, "I'm theone who exposed myself". Officer Brehm brought Cassity into WLLC and the victim identified Cassity as the person who exposed his penis to her. Cassity was immediately ar- rested by Officer King and trans- ported to the Campus Police Depart- ment. After being informed of his Constitutional Rights, Cassity agreed to talk to Officer King and, subse- quently, provided a verbal statement as to his involvement in this inci- dent. Cassity was transported to the Kenosha County Jail where he was booked on charges of lewd & las- civious Behavior and Disorderly Conduct. A tOUlI cash bond of $400.00 was established. Cassity posted the bond on Sunday, October 4, 1992 and was released from cus- tody. At the trial, Cassity read a state- ment before being sentenced. In his statement he said that "he doesn't hold the District Attorney account- able" and that he has "long harbored a resentment towards the judge." Cassity further remarked that he "has a predisposition to be men- tally challenged." He became in- creasingly incoherent and lost con- trol of himself several times and had to stop talking. Cassity con- cluded by telling Schroeder "may you judge fairly and be judged ac- cordingly." When the judge mentioned jai 1 time, Cassity interrupted him, say- ing that ifhe were to besentenced,he wanted more than the maximum eleven months. The judge referred toCassity's statement given to UW- Parkside Police saying that it read like pornography and was filled with threats. Cassity again inter- rupted and asked the judge, "How would you know?" Cassity's last remark was that he "would be back on the revolving door:' Cassity has been arrested on many other occasions dating back to 1979. His prior arrests ranged from attempted burglary to a con- viction similar to his latest one. New dean for school of business named Dennis Clarke News Editor Dr. Richard D. Brown, dean of the College of Busi- ness at Northern Illinois Uni- versity, has been named dean of the School of Business at UW-Parkside. The announcement ends a nearly year-long search for a successor to Beverlee Ander- son, who resigned her position as dean at UW-Parkside last February to accept a similar position with California State University at San Marcos. Arthur Corr had been acting as interim dean. AccordinglOProvostJohn Stockwell, two nation-wide searches were conducted that produced a total of 60 candi- dates. A search committee consist- ing of UW -Parkside faculty and Kenosha and Racine businesspeople reviewed the candidates and sug- gested Brown for the position. Brown has been active in the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, a majoraccred- iring body. He served as President, Mid-Continent East Deans for 1991 and 1992 and President, Illinois Council of Deans in 1988 and 1989. This experience will help Brown lead the school toward AACSB ac- creditation, according to John Stockwell, UW -Parksideprovostand vice-chancellor. Brown, a faculty member at Northern Illinois University since 1971, will begin his duties at UW- Parkside July I. To startwith we chose a somewhat quiet film of the holiday season. "Scentofa Woman" was given an obscure title and not given the extensive commercial advertise- ment usually needed for commer- cial success. Since this was Chris Z's pick, he will begin with his extensive look at "Scent of a Woman." Thanks Chris. Recently Chris and myself entered into the theater eagerly anticipating the new AI Pacino movie "Scent of a Woman" starring AI Pacino playing the role of a retired army colonel who lost his sight in an accident, and co-star Chris O'Donnell, as a prep school senior whose job is to babysit him over the Thanksgiving weekend. The movie starts off at a near stand-still, with Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) meeting Frank Slade (AI Pacino) in a small house down the road from the prep school. Pacino doesn't seem to be dis- turbed about his blindness. It's just a part of his life that he has to deal with because of his own carelessness (he was wounded when one of the grenades he was juggling exploded).
