The plan will be in effect until1994-95. University of Wisconsin S ys- tem President Kenneth Shaw has proposed enrollment cuts of more than 7,000 full-time students dur- ingthe next four years. Both the 13 four-year universities and the 13 two-year centers are included in !heCDt. Shaw 's CUl proposal wouldre- duce the present UW-Syslem stu- dentpopulation of 133,146 students to 126,025 students and will reduce the UW-System's student body by five percent. If Shaw's proposal passes, this would mean a cut of more than 12,000 students from 1987 to 1994. The United Council, the old- est and one of the largest state student associations in the nation, responded to Shaw's proposed en- rollment cut. "This cut of 7,000 students would be a devastating blow to the people of Wisconsin." said Brenda Leahy, United Council President. Bill Homer, PresidentofUW- Parkside's Student Government Association, and Chris Daniel. PSGA Vice-President. also reo sponded. "I'm against it," said Homer. "You're restricting education only to those who can afford it. Is that what public education isall about?" "It's good and bad," said Daniel. "It's good because more money would be available for higher level education. It's bad because it's notallowing those who have the potential, but not the motivation." According to Shaw, the UW- System lacks the money and re- sources to educate limitless num- bers of students. Healso stated that the cuts are in response to a de- clining amount of high school graduates. "A state system should allow anyone the chance to gain a broad- based education tostrengthen their skills for a bright future," said Kenneth Shaw Leahy. "A college education should not be just for an elite few." "Byresbicting enrollment you are going to increase tuition. Tu- ition has increased 105percent the past eight years," said Homer. Domestic violence/abuse in- volves the following: 1. Intential infliction of physical pain, physical injury or illness. 2. Intentional impairment of physical condition. 3. Sexual assault. 4. A physical act, or threat in - conjunction with a physical act which may cause the other person to reasonably fear imminent engagement in the conduct de- scribed above. Persons who can engage in domestic violence/abuse. include the following: I. An adtilt person against his/her spouse, former spouse or adult relative(parent, grandparent, stepparent, brother, sister, first cousin, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, stepbrother, stepsister, child, step- child,father-in·law,mother-in-Iaw. daughter-in·Jaw or son-in-law). 2. An adult person against an adult with whom theperson resides or formerly resided. According to DeAnn Possehl, Directorcf Residence Hall, the law was basically enacted for married couples or couples living together, but it also applies to college roommates. Possehl recalled seven incidents the first of couple months the law was in force and only t~o incidents since then. Questions have been raised about the recent publication of a student's death on the frontpage of the Ranger. Well, the Ranger staff reads many c:olJege DeWSplpers from acros.s the country on a weekly basis, and many of our fellow newspapers also follow tIlis formaL It has been againsI the policy of the Ranger in the past to put death notices on page one. But just . l.ike.. ydung else, policies can be changed. Our spans depanmem bas improved their new pullout section by 300% over last year. The Phy. Ed staff has commented that it is the best sportS section that they have seen in years. We know some of our hard worlc has paid oft because we have received several memos from the administration complimenting how much the paper has improved.
