The Newsboys have 22 years of live performance experience between them, averaging over 200 assorted dates per year, you know they've paid their dues! Mark Dawson, the leader of the band, has nine of the 22 years to his credit. Mark has won three different song writing contests over the last few years; needless to say, he is quite a compliment in that aspect. This confidence also shows in his one-to-one approach while addressing his audiences...relaxed, personable, and at times even comical. Jeffrey Boyle has been around as well. His background in R&B music explains the "Dance" part of the Newsboys' "Dance Rock" direction. Jeff has also written some music that deserves some attention, but watch out for that groove...It'll getcha! "G-Man" is the affectionate name given to Gary Vee, the youngest of the band. Gary tends to look at everything from the lighter side...everything! But he can play! You may find this hard to believe while watching him, but 50,000,000 Gary Vee fans can't be wrong can they? Originally from the Bedora Country, Texas, the country boy has arrived! Terry Car ter is the "guitar-slinger' The Newsboys have been looking for! Terry is the newest member of the band, but he had no trouble fitting right in. They will be performing at the Union Square 9:00 Wednesday night as part of the Welcome Week activities. Now, you ask, what is ComedySportz? According to Orvis ComedySportz is "a competitive improvizational comedy using a sports analogy." He went on to say, "A typical troop is composed of two comedic teams, a uniformed referee and an organist." The two teams compete against each other for audience laughs. A running score is kept, the referee officiates the games, issuing penalties as necessary, and background music is supplied by the organist. Orvis said, "We begin our show, just like at the stadium, by roaming the crowd selling popcorn, peanuts and raw liver." Then the referee explains the game to the audience. The players are introduced and the "Star Spangled Banner" is sung. There is a coin toss to decide which team will lead of and begin the night's festivites. ComedySportz troops have a repertoire of 35 games that they draw from during any given show. All the games performed by the troop are based on audience suggestion. With an audience the likes that Parkside with supply, the potential is there for one wild performance and a great time for all. Excell '88 A Leadership Adventure September 30 • October 2,1988 Plan now to attend Excel '88: A Leadership Adventure. This three day workshop, sponsored by the Student Activities Office will be held Sept. 30- Oct. 2 at Camp Wesly Woods on Lake Geneva. Various life and organizational skills will be presented.
