"I felt dirty. I had felt that I had done something wrong," said Harriet, then a woman in her early thirties, married with three children and a first semester student. That was Harriet's reaction when she read the note that was handed her three weeks into the semester by her male music professor. It was In a sealed envelope, written on personal stationery and read: "Would you consider hav- Ing dinner with, spending an evening listening to some jazz with and maybe even fooling around with, a slightly paunchy, slightly agtng, re- luctantly Inactive dj and vtstt- ing professor? I WIll need at the least a smile and a wink. I WIll need a name and a phone number." "When I got the note," said Harriet, "I didn't know what to do. I went to my chemistry class and I showed my friend the note because 1 was really shocked. She said, "Isn't that nice? I'd be flattered." 1 didn't know what to say so I said 'ok' but inside I'm think- Ing, 'Why do I feel Iso crummy?' " Harriet felt that she couldn't tell her husband, Bob, about the incident be- cause "I was scared to. He'd say, 'Drop out of school.' 1 had to face the situation and handle It. I'd been away from school for so long that I needed a lot of encourage- ment and support just to get into the door!' It was after HarrIet had talked to a friend who had also been approached by a professor that she mustered the courage to tell Bob about the incident. "Bob's tlrst reaction was," recalled Harriet, " 'You have such an outgoing personality that a lot of people think you're more friendly than you are.' "I told Bob that he didn't understand. I've never had a conversation with the man," continued HarrIet. She had decided to talk to a counselor about her problem and was told about the Sexual Harass- ment Advisory Commjttee on campus. In the meanUnle, she went to class. "I tried really hard to be above It," said HarrIet. "I got tough sounding in my heart. I went to class with the slrong firm attitude that I'm not going to take It anymore. "But when I would ask a question, the response I got from him was chuckle, chuck- le, chuckle, 'Can anyone an- swer this woman's question?' It was demeantng. Nothing I could say could possibly be worth his time and that made me feel real fooUsh." Eventually HarrIet decided to drop the class. She talked to a member of the Sexual Harassment Advisory oom- mittee and was told that she could pursue her claim and press formal charges. "I didn't feel that I could," explained Harriet. "I felt that It was going to be a real hu- mUlating situation to pursue. I wanted it over WIth.
