In addition to educating the campus community. about sexual harassment, the Com- mittee functioned "to provide a means for people to report sexual harassment with as 11t- tle anxiety and embarrass- ment as possible," according to Stella Gray, the first to chair the Committee back in 1981. To this effect. the names of the Committee members were published, which re- sulted in individual members being contacted by persons claiming sexual harassment. The Committee member would then gather informa- tion from the parties tn- volved, come to the Com~lt. tee for advice and take the ID- formation back to the parties Invloved without ever having disclosed any names. Our reasons for backing Alex Pettit and Corby Ander- son, explained last week, need no elaboration. Our deci- sion to endorse candidates. however. is a right and re- sponslbllity which warrants clartncatlon, especially in light of the absurd charges which have been lobbed our way. As a newspaper serving the Parkslde community, the , Ranger exists to Inform students, staff and admlnlstratlon of Issues and events relevant to them. That responsibility, In part, Includes formulating a cogent edltorlal opinion, one that reflects a staff consensus and whose purpose is to logically lead readers to a better understanding of com. plex, slgnlflcant matters. Such a rationale has been germane to freedom of the press since the Constitution established that-fundamental right. Yet It has been suggested by some protestors that total freedom of the press does not apply to student publi- cations like the Ranger, which are partially funded through student-generated segregated fees. We ardently dlsagree. It Is a specious claim that the Ranger be prohibited from endorsing a political candidate on the grounds that doing so Is an infraction of a UW -System Board of Re- gents policy stating that segregated fee monles cannot be used to support political campaigns and activities. Such a provision does exist, In the System!! FInancial Policy and Procedure Paper '20 (FPPP 20), but It pertains only to the "giving of segregated fees" to political organizations, accordlng to James Albers, the System's director of auxn- lary operations. •'The consensus here (among System officials)." Albers told the Ranger this week, "ls that as long as i( is a nor- mal part of edltorla1 policy, the endorsing of candldates Is perfectly In the context of First Amendment rights. Since the purpose of your newspaper Is not political, but infor- mational, edltorlaIlzlng • and endorsing candldates • Is permissible. " It has also been intimated that our endorsement Is In some way part of a "hidden agenda" our staff has de- vised to strengthen Its already "slgnlflcant power to Influ· ence public oplnlon on campus." It Is sad Indeed that per- sons and organizations which supposedly have the inter- ests of the university at heart see fit to accuse us of collu- sion without benefit of anything other than a feeling that "there may be a hidden agenda." It Is an ugly, conten- tlous insinuation and deserves little serious consideration. There is one point, however. on which we and our de- tractors agree: "freedom- of the press Is not an absolute." Instead, It Is a fragile package which must be handled with great care, since Its contents are precious. We view our duty as that of the postal Inspector: to assure that the bundle Isn't knocked about and damaged, so that what's inside can be enjoyed for generations.
