"We are still investigating and no charges have been filed at this point," said Secu­ rity Director Ron Brinkmann. "I have no idea when the in­ vestigation will be over and any information that comes from us will come through Walt Shirer. He is our public information officer.' A memo distributed last week by Computer Center Di­ rector Bruce Misamore dis­ closed that "since approxi­ mately last September, a per­ son or persons have been ac­ cessing unauthorized ac­ counts on a computer used for instruction and research by students and faculty." "The 'hacker' or 'hackers' did not obtain access to Uni­ versity Data Base Computer, which contains such informa­ tion as student grades, tran­ scripts and other data," the memo continued, "nor did Computer see page 2 Staff protest personnel shifts By Kimberlie Kranich Asst. News Editor Classified personnel at Parkside have been informa­ tional picketing at the cam­ pus this past week in protest of the manner in which the administration, is meeting the mandated State budget cuts. Three weeks ago the State Legislature added another $5.5 million to the $23.5 mil­ lion requested earlier in the UW-Systems share of the pro­ jected State budget deficit. Three long-standing state employees with 11-16 years seniority have been given layoff notice effective March 14th. Ed Sahakian, Connie Allen, and Patricia Falkens-. tern all must take a lower job position and take a voluntary demotion or be out of a job. According to Kathy Klein, Chair of the Academic Staff Committee, 110 positions are missing system wide due to budget cutting, "I would think that they ' (classified employees) would look at the. cuts in a positive side be­ cause they have options. There are other campuses Staff protest see page 2 United Council elections here The United Council delega­ tions from the member UW campuses will travel to Park- side this weekend to hold a general meeting and elect a new president. Five students have submit­ ted their names: Ed Emer­ son, UW-Milwaukee; JoAnn Prange, UW-Stout; Sue Premo, UW Green Bay; Bryce Tolfree, UW-Oshkosh; and Robert Foy, President of the UW Center's Student Gov­ ernance Council. The election will be held after the General Assembly meets, and the winner will need a majority of the dele­ gate votes. Bryce Tolfree is a Kenosha resident who, like all the can­ didates, is the president of his university's student govern­ ment. "Parkside is honored to host a United Council meeting for the first time in three years," said Pat Ramsdell, Parkside Student Govern­ ment Association President. "Planning has been a little hectic, but it is a real pleas­ ure to be able to show off the beautiful campus we have." The PSGA elections Monday and Tuesday, featuring con-| troversial referenda, SUFAC and Senate seats drew 52? people. ^ . . The PSGA Senate elections attracted 16 candidates to nine open seats and three students ran for one SUFAC seat. It is certainly refreshing to see students expressing in­ terest in student government, an organization important in protecting student rights. Unfortunately, seven people lost their attempts at Sen­ ate seats, and two people lost their bids for the SUFAC seat. Hopefully, these students won't stop trying, and will still get involved on campus. Activities offer more than just filler for resumes to stu­ dents; they offer the opportunity to get hands-on experi­ ence in areas which complement students' academic en­ deavors. Many skills can also be developed by participat­ ing in activities, like interpersonal communication, or the ability to work with large groups, etc. The nine people who lost the elections surely have the drive and initiative, and can inspire more students to get involved in any one of the many clubs and organizations on campus. And maybe this trend will.be contagious. Editorial correction The editorial in last week's Ranger incorrectly stated that PAB (Parkside Activities Board) limits presidential nominees only to members of its Executive Council. PAB presidential candidates can be any PAB member, not lim­ ited to the Executive Council. This procedure is still limiting. We maintain our posi­ tion that PAB elections should be open to all students. PAB's electoral process is unfair to the student body, which supports the organization with segregated fees. According to Gary Goetz, assistant chancellor for fiscal affairs, "The key word in our administration decision mak­ ing is priorities. We protect from the high priority and cut from the low priority. There's no way we can cut on this campus without hurting serv­ ices." "The cuts were based on a priority rather than a senior­ ity basis. Gov. Earl said the instructional areas are not to be touched so our choices are limited. The question is what services do we think we can get along without," said Klein. Ed Sahakian is a 63 year old locksmith with a hearing disability. He gave up his job to take a demotion as a facili­ ties repair worker. He has two years left until his retire­ ment. Patricia Falkenstern is a secretary whose job was premised upon serving the li­ brary archivist who left cam­ pus. She will either bump into a lower class or voluntarily take a demotion. Connie Allen is a press operator in the duplications department. Allen works with a slightly handicapped male who has been exempted from bumping. Allen chose to ac­ cept a third shift janitorial job instead of being without work. She feels no animosity toward her male partner but thinks there is a need for two employees. "I work from 7:45 through 4:30 and am busy all that time. I'm usually printing right up until the day is done. The need is there and I'd rather be a press operator than a janitor," said Allen. Allen takes pride in the work she does and will find it difficult to leave. "It (press operator) is a skilled job but if I wanted to go somewhere else, I wouldn't make the same salary. It's a demotion from a skilled job to a jani­ tor's job," she said. An information sheet distri­ buted by picketers of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, Local 2180, argues that the classified employees' mo­ rale is not going to be raised by meeting budget cuts in the laying off of its workers. The union members argue that the cuts should be met by cut­ ting positions recently va­ cant, currently unfilled, or from positions from which persons plan to retire soon. According to Goetz, these options are not feasible. "You can put a freeze on vacant positions but this campus won't operate that way. We won't operate with cutting supply and expense either. Supply and expense is the basic source that runs the campus and it is the last item to be cut," he said. The union also argues that limited term employees (L- TE'S) continue to be em- ployeed on campus yet classi­ fied employees must leave their jobs after Wisconsin State Service of 11-15 years. "LTE'S are a perfectly vi­ able employment option to get a task accomplished. They (LTE'S) are structured into the personnel system to provide pay increases and fringe benefits," according to Goetz. LTE'S are assigned part- time and seasonal jobs such as computer operators during registration. "It would be a waste of the taxpayer's money and we couldn't afford to hire classified persons," said Goetz.
