Editorial
Why
we're
here
When
the
creators
of
the
Constitution
established
the
First
Amendment
guaranteeing
the
freedom
of
the
press
and
the
people's
right
to
know,
they
truly
gave
to
each
of
us
an
important
and
delicate
gift.
The
rights
of
the
First
Amendment
are
broad,
but
the
responsibilities
are
just
as
great.
The
Ranger,
as
Parkside's
weekly
newspaper,
strives
to
enforce
and
protect
the
rights
guaranteed
to
all
of
us
-
the
rights
of
you,
the
Parkside
community,
to
know
the
intricacies
of
what
is
happening
on
campus,
in
the
com
munity,
state,
nation
and
world.
Ours
is
a
heavy
burden,
but
we
embark
upon
this
challenge
with
a
hunger
to
know
and
to
inform.
Ranger's
corporate
by-laws
state
"The
Ranger
pu
blishes
independent
of
the
Parkside
administration,
and
any
other
organization."
Often people
comment
that
the
only
real
purpose
served
by
a
campus
newspaper
is
to
be
an
administrative
public
address
system.
It
is
often
true
that
a
great
portion
of
the
"news"
occur
ring
on
a
campus
is
generated
by
the
administration;
however,
a
newspaper
would
be
doing
a
great
disservice
to
its
readers
if
it
merely
served
as
an
administrative
mouthpiece.
Ranger,
therefore,
strives
to
serve
as
the
admistrative
watch
dog
for
the
students,
as
well
as
keeping
abreast
of
every
campus
happening.
If
something occurs
that
affects
the
Parkside
community,
then
we
will
cover
the
issue
to
the
fullest.
The
Ranger
does
its
best
to
provide
the
Parkside
com
munity
with
a
well-written,
informative
and
objective
newspaper
that
is
written
and
edited
solely
by
students.
In
order
to
accomplish
our
goals,
the
Ranger
reports
cur
rent
news,
trends
and
entertainment,
educates
readers
and
attempts
to
lead
reader
opinion
through
editorials
We
strongly
encourage
input
from
readers
because
we
cannot
function
effectively
without
it.
If
you
are
being
mistreated
or
if
you
see
an
unjust
situation,
or
if
you
feel
there
is
someone
who
should
be
recognized,
please
let
us
know.
One
important
job
of
a
newspaper
is
to
lead
opinion.
The
editorial
page
is
the
area
where
the
Ranger
voices
an
opinion
on
current
issues.
A
six-member
editorial
board
meets each
week
to
discuss
and
vote
on
what
issues
will
be
the
topic
of
the
Ranger's
editorial.
The
editorial
com
ments
of
the
Ranger
do
not
necessarily
reflect
the
views
of
the
entire
staff;
however,
staff
members
are
given
the
opportunity
to
express
their
individual
opinion
in
a
column
on
the
editorial
page
titled
"Nobody
asked
me
but..."
Students,
faculty,
staff
and
administrators
are
en
couraged
to
voice
their
opinions
in
a
letter
to
the
editor.
This
is
the
chance
for
the
readers
to
complain,
compli
ment
the
Ranger,
or
discuss
any
other
topic
they
desire.
We
are
concerned
about
the
opions
of
the
readers
and
hope
that
more

received
this
year.
The
editor
is
in
charge
of
the
intricate
workings
of
the
Ranger
and
serves
as
a
link
between
the
newspaper
and
the
Parkside
community.

Ranger's

the

the
newspaper,

cruitment
and
maintenance
of
a
newspaper

has
compliments
or
complaints
about
the
Ranger
and
who
does
not
wish

take
advantage
of
the

to
the

tor
section
is
encouraged
to
meet
with
the
editor.
Any
problem
that
cannot
be
resolved
with
the
editor
can,
if
necessary,
go
before
the Board
of
Directors,
and
they
will
attempt
to
solve
the
problem in
an
objective
and
demo
cratic
manner.
Be
aware
that
the
Ranger
does
care
about
you,
the
reader.
We
will
continue
to
give
you
the
most
informative
and
complete
newspaper,
while
protecting

excercis-

guaranteed

the

Ranger

Ranger
staff

cated group
of
students
from
all
walks
of
life
and
a
variety
of
interests
and
majors,
that
comes
together
with
one
shar
ed
goal
-
to
put
out
a
good
newspaper.
The
Ranger
would
like
to
encourage
interaction
with
the
student
body
by
encourag
ing
students
to
stop
in
with
story
suggestions,
just
to
visit,
or
better
yet,
for
infor
mation
about
joining
the
staff.
The
following
is
a
short
in
troduction
of
the
members
of
the
Ranger
staff,
which
will
give
students
an
idea
about
the
kinds
of
people
involved,
and
who
students
may
want
to
meet.
Jennie
Tunkieicz,
21,

her
second
year
as
Ranger
editor.
Prior
to
her
appoint
ment
as
editor,
Tunkieicz
served
as
news
editor
for
the
Ranger,
and
was
editor
of
the
Bradford
High
Schol
Inferno.

Ranger
and
Parkside
very
much,

strongly
encourage
other
stu
dents,
especially
freshmen,
to
get
involved

a

part

college

"My
main
goal
for
the
Ranger
this
year
is
to
completely
cover
the
im
portant
events
at
Parkside.
We
have
a
lot
of
experienced
Ranger

Nobody
asked
me,
but...
Entertainment
trend
presents
political
emptiness

Nobody
asked
me
but,
I
have
had
it
with
the
current
entertainment
trend
that
de
lights
in
presenting
the
1960's
radicals
as
the
1980's
YUMPs
(Young
Upwardly
Mobile
Professionals).
Both
the
screen
film
"The
Big
Chill"
and
its
clone,
CBS'
new
"Hometown,"
present
a
bunch
of
college
friends
who
moan
about
no
expectations
in
life,
and
wonder
where
their
ideals
have
gone.
If
I
had
the
values
that
these
people
have,
I'd
moan,
too.
The
political
commitment
of
the
characters
in
both
of
these
vehicles
doesn't
exist
in
the
80's
and
didn't
exist
in
the
60's.
"Whatever
happened
to
that
novel
you
were
going
to
write?"
one
friend
asked
an
other
in
"Hometown."
"Well,
I
never
finished
it,"
he
answered.
"It
was
an
anti-
establishment
novel...then
I
made
those
good
invest
ments."
The
message
in
"The
Big
Chill"
is
similar.
Two
friends,
one
a
television
star
and
the
other
a
successful
business
man,
discuss
how
much
money
they
make.
The
sentiment
in
the
very
similar
productions
is
simple.
People
only
have
social
com
mitment
when
they
don't
have
money.
As
long
as
the
characters
have
the
trappings
of
wealth,
they
have
no
need
to
care
about
anyone
but
themselves.
The
end,
from
their
now-successful
vantage
point,
now
justifies
the
means.
There
are
other
messages
m
these
works
that
are
equal
ly
disturbing.
Both
contain
frustrated
career
women
who
have
sacrificed
their
personal
lives
for
their
careers.
The
most
pathetic
message
of
these
two
depressing
works
is
that
the
only
characters
who
retain
any
shred
of
ideal
ism
are
the
ones
who
appear
the
most
unhappy
and
^suc
cessful.
The
characters
and
<
atti
tudes
of
"The
Big
Chill"
and
"Hometown"
reflect
the
trendy
and
shallow
commit
ment
that
plagued
the
move
ment
on
the
campuses
in
the
1960's.
Those
people
who
had
real
commitment
then
have
it
now,
but
the
media
doesn't
find
that
material
exciting
be
cause
they
are
working
in
the
welfare
offices
and
ghetto
schools,
instead
of
business
or
show
business.
What
is
im
portant
to
remember
is
that
these
shows
are
in
no
way
re
flective
of
the
serious
and
committed
activites
that
went
on
then,
and
continue
today.
For
a
select
few
individuals,
political
commitment
is
not
taken
off
when
a
mink
coat
is
put
on.
These
characters
are
not
those
people.

Search
committee
expects
new
chancellor
next
year

The
Search
and
Screen
Committee
for
Parkside's
new
chancellor
is
expecting
about
150
serious
applicants
for
the
position
and
is
hoping
to
name
a
new
chancellor
by
next
summer,
chairman
Rob
ert
Canary
said.
After
that,
the
regent
and
the
president
of
the
UW-Sys-
tem
will
choose
the
chancel
lor.
Canary
said
that
since
the
process was
slowed
during
summer,
the
committee
is
still
accepting
applications,
but
he
expects
to
have
five
finalists
picked
by
the
end
of
this
semester.
The
committee,
composed
of
seven
faculty
members,
two
students,
two
academic
staff
members
and
one
ad
ministrator
each
from
Park-
side
and
the
UW-System,
is
screening
each
applicant.
The
applicants,
who
have
submitted
affidavits
and
ref
erences,
will
be
measured
against
five
criteria:
The
per
son
has
to
have
been
in
an
academic
leadership
position,
Advising
Center opens
in
Library

to
have
been
successful,
has
to
have
an
understanding
of
Parkside
and
be
able
to
convey
this
understanding
and
have
a
committment
to
affirmative
action.
The
committee
is
not
re
leasing
names
of
the
appli
cants
at
this
time,
Canary
said,
because
the
disclosure
of
names
"will
reduce
their
effectiveness"
in
their
cur
rent
jobs.
"Anything
we
do
to
reduce
the
confidentiality
of
these
people
reduces
the
chances
of
getting
the
best people,"

said.

These
and many,
many
other
questions
can
be

the
new
Advising
Center,
located
in
lower
level
Main
Place,
WLLC
D-174,
the
former
Career
Resource
Cen
ter
office.
The
Advising
Center
was
established
to
create
cen
tralized
advising
for
new
stu
dents
and
those
who
have
not
declared
majors.
"As
a
byproduct
of
that,
we
can
also
help
streamline
and
improve,
and
indeed
make
more
rewarding,
the
advising
process
for
all
students,"
said
David
Beach,
Advising
Cen
ter
director.
Beach
said
that
the
decen
tralized
advising
that
Parksi
de
previously
offered
to
all
students
works
best
for those
students
with
declared
ma
jors
who
are
established
in
a
program.
New
and
undeclar
ed
students
need
more
struc
tured
advising
for
developing
a
well
planned
course
sched
ule,
Beach
said.
"We
will
do
what
we
can
to
get
new
students
involved
in
their
education,
help
them
to
appreciate
and
accept
their
responsibility
to
their
educa
tion,
and
make
them
aware
of
the
support
and
resources
that
the
campus
had
to
offer,"
he
said.
The
Advising
Center
wi'l
also
serve
as
a
clearing
house
of
information
for
the
Parksi
de
community.
Faculty
and
staff
can
use
the
center
to
help
make
their
advising
jobs
easier.

kind

wrong

"Unless
students
know
pre
cisely
where
to go
with
a
problem,
they
will
be
better
off
starting
here.
Those
few
extra
steps
to
get
here
initial
ly
will
pay
off
handsomely,"
said
Beach.
Campus
Ambassadors,
in
cooperation
with
the
Advising
Center,
will
soon
begin
to
or
ganize
discussion
group
ses
sions
for
new
students.
"Hopefully
we
can
get
every
new
student
involved
in
a
dis
cussion
group.
It
will
be
very
beneficial
for
them,"
he
said.
The
Advising
Center
counter
will
be
staffed
by
Parkside
counselors
and
by
trained
student
employees.
Inside
the
center,
Professor
Beecham
Robinson
and
Beach
will
advise
students
and
work
with
academic
re
quests.
Several
faculty
mem
bers
have
indicated
a
desire
to
do
specialized
advising
for
their
particular
programs
at
the
Center.
"We
expect
it
will
be
cha-

soon
that
will
dissipate
and
the
Advising
Center
will
help
make
the
lives
of
indi
vidual
students
better
and
make
the
collective
experi
ence
at
Parkside

Rader
gets
national
post
Library
Director
Hannelore
Rader
has
been
elected
presi
dent
of
the
9,000-member
As
sociation
of
College
and
Re
search
Libraries
(ACRL),
the
largest
unit
of
the
American
Library
Association.
Rader
joins
a
group
of
li
brarians
from
such
places
as
Duke
University,
the
Univer
sity
of
Minnesota,
Stanford
University
and
the
University
of
California
system
in
lead
ing
the
ACRL.
She
will
serve
a
one-year
term.
Rader
becomes
the
second
person
from
UW-Parkside
to
head
the
prestigious
associa
tion.
Former
UW-Parkside
assistant
chancellor
for
edu
cational
services
Carla
Stoff-
le,
now
associated
director
for
public
services
at
the
Uni
versity
of
Michigan
Libraries
in
Ann
Arbor,
served
as
ACRL
president
while
at
UW-
Parkside
in
1982-83.
She
will
succeed
Sharon
Hogan,
director
of
Libraries
at
Louisiana
State
University,
Baton
Rouge,
as
head
of
the

In
New
York
the
Educational
Testing
Service
has
filed
a
suit
against
a
leading
Scholastic
Aptitude
Test
coaching
firm,
charging
that
it
improperly
used
copyright
test
questions
to
help
students
improve
their
scores.
The
Green
Bay
Press-Gazette reported
that
some
time
before
November
1982,
the
Princeton
Review
somehow
ob
tained
questions
actively
in
use
on
the
SAT
and
other
achievement
tests.
District
Judge
Maryann
Trump
Barry
issued
a
restrain
ing
order
forbidding
the
Princeton
Review
from
using
such
questions
in
coaching
students,
the
article
continued
and
an
August
12
hearing
was
set
to
make
a
motion
for
a
possible
injunction.
The
information
was
made
known,
according
to
the
story,
when
some
students
who
had
used
the
coaching
or
ganization,
took
the
tests
and
realized
that
the
actual
questions
had
been
revealed.
They
notified
authorities,
who
in
turn
notified
the
College
Board,
which
sponsors
the
exams.

predicts
activism

University
of
Wisconsin
System
President

activism

college
campuses.
O'Neil
left
his

the

without

movement

in

documents
obtained

the
Freedom

Information
Act,
and
revealed
that
Reagan
was
classi
fied
as
a

classification
of
informant
