Anthony S. Earl said the UW-System campuses, in many cases, are a "pale imitation" of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Not so, says Parkside Assistant Chancellor Belly Shutler. She said in an interview Tuesday that Park- side is unique. Earl believes tax dollars could be more wisely spent by the system, says press aide Carol Stroebel, and each campus should strive to de- velop a specific identity. Shutler describes Parkside as an undergraduate, liberal arts college with some professional programs. which is different from the other • an Image system campuses. . The school requires all students to have liberal arts classes to gradu- ate, she said, and Parkside gets un- dergraduate students involved in research, which is only done on the graduate level at Madison. "We certainly don't see our mls- sion as adding one graduate pro- gram after another." she said. "That would be duplication." Shutler called Earl's charges "ri- diculous. We're not trying to be like Madison. "We're trying to be the equiva- lent of a small, fine liberal arts col- lege ...but in a public university set- ting." Former PSGA president in coma for 15 months-dies • Former Student Government President, Phillip Pogreba, 24, died Wednesday, Jan. 2 from injuries suffered in a traffic accident on Sept. 17, 1983. Pogreba had been unconsious since the accident more than 15 months ago. Formerly of Kenosha, Pogreba was moved after the acci- dent to be near his family and was a. patient at the Tri-County Memo- nal Nursing Home in Whitehall, Wis. where he died, ,Pogreba was a passenger in a car driven by Samuel Greidanus, Ke- nosha, which went through a stop SIgn at Highway 32 while eastbound on Highway A and hit a tree. Pogreba suffered massive inter- nal injUries and multiple fractures. Sleven Myzenski, Kenosha, also a passenger in the car, suffered a bro- ken leg, and Greidanus received a bloedy nose from the accident. Greidonas was sentenced on June 19 to 18 months in prison on two .charges of causing injuries by the intoXicated use of a motor ve- IlIde and failure to stop for a stop sign, Pogreba moved to Kenosha from Independence, Wis. to attend Park- Side.He was majoring in Industrial and Environmental Hygiene. X-rated "Tnsatiable" to be shown in Union by Jeaate Taakiela Editor Irresistible, spellbinding, scintil- lating, phenomenal, hypnotic, elec- lifying are the adjectives used by some reviewers to describe "Insati- able," the X-rated PAB (Parkside Activities Board) sponsored film which will be shown on campus at the end of the month. Two years ago the showing of the X-rated film "Emanuelle-The Joys of a Woman" prompted much de- bate on campus. Protest demon- strations, both pro and con, as well as petitions surrounded the film's showing. A group of people who were against the film tool< the mat- ter to the Sexual Harassment Com- mittee staling that showing the film was "sexual harassment." The film was shown as any scheduled film in the Union Cinema, and, despite plcketing, was one of the best at- tended films of t983. Randy Zich, co-chainnan of the PAB film committee with Pam Woodbury, said, "'\"be objective of the fibn committee is to provide a variety of entertainment to stu- dents. We have shown G-rated fibns as well as R-rated film and this year we decided to show an X- rated f1lm. "1 realized that showing 'Insati- able' would cause a lot of commo- tion, but I feel that students who don't like that type of film should respect the opinions of those who do and vice versa. We try to pick films so that each student will like at least one during the year. The success o( t'Emanuelle" two years ago proved that people did want to see that type of film." Zich said that the committee has discussed whether or not to show an X-rated film for quite some time. "We made the decision as a group, We took a vote and the ma- jority voted in favor or showing the film. I thinIr. the reason why an X- rated film was not shown last year was because the committee didn't want to deal with the flack But I think that if people want a real say in what films are selected then they should join the film board and belp," he said. Zich would not disclose the cost of renting "Insatiable," hut said that it was not an outrageous amount, and is comparable to other film rentals. He said that campuses are charged for a film per showing. He stressed that PAB is not sponsoring the film as a money making venture. "PAB doesn't make a profit. Actually we consis- tently take a loss on filins. What we do is estimate what our imcome will be and try to cover that with the number of people who attend the film. Any money left over at the end of the semester goes to- ward summer films or (or next fall," he said. Zich is anticipating protests against the film, although he hopes they will be minimal. "I probably won't even see the film. I'm not some kinky person and I'm not out to upset people on campus. I am anticipating a protest but I don't thinIr. it will be as great as two years ago. I'm hoping the film won't cause 'a lot ot' problems," S31dZich But some protestors from two years ago may resurface. Twenty years ago I saw the Beat- les' first movie, ., A Hard Day's Night," in a theater jam-packed with screaming teen-agers. Viewing the film was like attending a Beat- les concert; the sound of the crowd continually drowned out the sounds of the Beatles. Several weeks ago. I went to see Paul McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street." It's a wonderful film, filled with excel- lent music and musicians, including Ringo Starr. The acting is superb and tbe !ibn has a nicely structured plot. witb good guys and bad guys, and Paul's unshakeable faith in one of his employees who appears to have stolen the master tapes of a just-completed record LP. This is the first time I have ever attended a movie where I was the only person in the audience! As someone once said, bands go in and out of style; perhaps twenty years from now, Prince will release a movie and no one will go to see it. It's gone from Racine, but if you get a chance, see Paul's film. It's the best movie I've seen all year. But many of those films are degrading to women and men as well," said McLean. Roseann Mason, senior, who was in McLean's film class and has seen "Insatiable" feels the film is not ar- tistic but pornagraphic. "You can lump 'Insatiable' with many such films as pornographic. I have also seen "Emanuelle" and that was a soft porn movie - it was much more sensual at a much more ar- tistic level. I'm not against X-rated movies being shown on campus. But as a woman I think it is sad that people can't get sensuality from a relationship, Qut can from pornography. Having seen both 'EmanueUe' and 'Insatiable' I sup- pose the reaction against 'Insati- able' will be stronger because of the type of movie that it is." How can you make a deci- sion about something you've never seen? People will feel safer seeing an X-rated film here than at Ford Theater. Also, in this environment students can discuss with others the effects of pornography. I stand by PAB's right to make such a deci' sion," said Tunks.
